Description

  Pans     l'emploi    du dispositif montré à la  fi,,-. 1 et en     sripposant    qu'on     veuille        traiter     sur toute sa     longueur    la, surface de la     pièce     cylindrique représentée, l'extrémité inférieure  de     la.    pièce est tout d'abord amenée au-dessus  de l'inducteur 18, et puis la. pièce est abaissée  de façon à passer dans toute sa     longueur    à      travers le groupe entier des inducteurs et de       l'oi;

Method and apparatus for the heat treatment of metal parts by electricity. The present invention relates to the treatment by electric heating of surface areas of metal parts, such as for example shafts or plates, producing a relative progression movement between the part and a current inducing device. electrical, for example a high frequency current, connected to a source,

current, the inductor device being at an appropriate distance from the workpiece so as to induce electric heating currents in the surface thereof, so that .the heated surface can be quenched after being brought to. the quenching temperature.

The present invention comprises a process and an apparatus for the thermal treatment by induced electric currents of metal parts such as rollers, shafts, tubes, beams, rails, plates, etc. and whereby the desired physical characteristics in the heat treated surfaces of these parts can be suitably obtained.

It is possible to arrange this so as to cause not only the heating of the part to the temperature of the quenching, but also a preheating of the part and / or a heating after the quenching in order to moderate or eliminate the tensions.

According to the method of the present invention, for heat treating the surface of a part and consisting in producing a relative advancing movement between the part and electrical inductors connected to a current source for inducing heating currents in the part. the surface area of the part, a relative progression movement is produced between the part and at least two independent inductors, located one @en:

ahead of the other in the direction of advancing movement, and current of the desired character and intensity, is supplied to the respective inductors in order to give the surface area the desired physical characteristics.

To treat the surface area of a metal part by induction heating and quenching, a relative advancing movement can be produced between the part and two separate inductors located one in front of the other in the direction of. movement of progression and each supplied independently of a current of appropriate range and intensity during said movement,

one inductor producing a preheating of the part and the other being a main inductor through which the. surface area of the part is raised to the desired temperature for quenching, then quenching, as it progresses. said surface when it has. been heated by the main inductor.

To treat in this way a lique metal part having a shoulder or a widened part, one can proceed in the following way: One produces a relative movement of progression between the part and two separate inductors, located one in front of the 'other in the. direction of the advancing movement and supplies current to the inductor which is furthest from the protrusion or enlarged part of the part, during the advancing movement.

to produce a heating of. the superficial zone, then soak as it progresses. heated surface zone, then the current is supplied to the second inductor when the. continuation of the forward movement is prevented by the protrusion or widened part of the part, so as to cause the heating of the. surface zone which is adjacent: to said projection or widened part, then this same zone is quenched.

Of energy applied during the heating of the room before. The quenching, and the time elapsing between this heating and the quenching, can be adjusted to î to, the desired physical characteristics in the surfaces treated by the. heat.

In the accompanying drawings, which show, in part schematically, embodiments of devices according to the invention: FIG. 1 is a schematic elevation, partially in section, of a device according to the invention, intended for the treatment of a cylindrical part of uniform diameter.

Fig. 2 is a section along the line II-II of the. fig. 1 view in the direction of the arrows. The fi-. 3 is a schematic sectional view of a device similar to that of FIG. 1, but showing a modified arrangement of inductors to process a workpiece having a protruding portion oii of larger diameter.

The fi ,, -. 4 is an elevation, partially in section, showing the general arrangement of an automatic device for the treatment of a cylindrical part of variable diameter.

  The fi ,, -. 5 is a section along the line V - V of the end 4.

In referring to <<the. fig. 1 of the drawings, the cylindrical part 1 (I to be treated is supported by a suspension member 11, for example a cable or a rod attached to an eyelet 12 so that it can be lowered at a uniform or variable speed.

A fixed bar 13 serves to guide the workpiece in the direction of movement, the arms 14 and 15 maintaining the cylinder in a determined position relative to the bar 13. The cylinder is provided with an extension 16 serving as a support guide, while the tail 17 of the millet 12 serves as the guide for the opposite end of the cylinder. These supports being in alignment allowing the cylinder to rotate under a rotary or oscillating motion.

is communicated îi the suspension member II.

The heating inductors 18, 19 and 24 e1: the element (the quenching 21 are fixed to the bar 13. the inductors. Are supplied by an alternating current. When these organs are cor- rectenient, arranged among themselves and relatively to:

the part, the cylinder to be treated, supplied with the correct amount of energy - heating and refrigerant, the latter being applied in the time and ratio appropriate to the part to be treated, these devices allow the application of almost any treatments, thermal which may be desired and compatible with the material of the part.

  Pans use of the device shown at fi ,, -. 1 and sripposant that we want to treat over its entire length the surface of the cylindrical part shown, the lower end of the. part is first brought above inductor 18, and then. piece is lowered so as to pass its entire length through the entire group of inductors and the oi;

quenching gane. The inductor 18 is ordinarily supplied with a low frequency current, such as that employed in lighting circuits, although it can also receive a high frequency current, and it serves as a means, of preliminary heating only for the metal of the cylinder surface as it enters the inductor group and the quench member. However, under certain conditions, it is possible to disregard the use of the preliminary heating inductor.

The part of the surface which is thus previously heated then penetrates into the inductor 19, preferably with water cooling and which is preferably supplied with a current of a frequency substantially higher than 60 periods and said surface is supplied at a relatively high temperature before emerging from the latter inducer 19.

The portion of the surface thus heated passes through the insulating screen 20 and then enters the circular quench ring 21 from where the quench fluid is vigorously projected onto the heated surface through orifices 22 which are directed so as to prevent the quenching. fluid to take an upward direction and pass over the edge, screen 20.

As the cylinder continues to descend, the hardened part passes through screen ring 23 and enters inductor 24 which again heats the workpiece surface to any desired degree, after which it is allowed to cool in air or in any other atmosphere. In the case of a ferrous material, this last operation anneals the surface hardened by the previous heating and reduces or eliminates the tensions in the.

room. The tail 17 of the support eyelet is of sufficient length to allow the upper edge of the cylinder to pass completely through the annealing ring 24 before the arm 14 reaches the inductor 18.

The process just described is particularly applicable for steel parts having an approximate carbon content of 0.35 or more, and it will produce a surface area of substantially uniform hardness and free of stress. damage which may have occurred during the quenching process, and furthermore substantially free of certain other stresses which may have existed prior to the quenching.

Parts made of a wide variety of different materials, both metallic and non-metallic, react differently when subjected to this process. For example, articles made of copper, brass. or bronze can be substantially softened or annealed by the heating and subsequent quenching, described above.

Depending on the material of the part and the desired results, it is possible to omit the use of either the pre-heating inductor 18 or the re-fired inductor 24.

The speed with which the part passes through the inductor 19 must be adjusted so that with a given energy in the inductor the temperature of the surface area! Of the part is sufficiently high above the critical temperature to allow le: quench hardening when the heated surface passes through the quench space in front of member 22.

The method described can also be used for the treatment of non-cylindrical parts, for example, bars or plates which it is desired to harden entirely or on only a part of one or both sides, or -de rails of tracks. iron whose upper surface must be hardened.

Preheating by inductor 18 will in some cases be desirable as a means of raising the temperature of the surface area so as to reduce the amount of heat to be applied by main inductor 19 in view of . to reach the quenching temperature.

This preheating being brought to a point where the temperature is a little above the critical temperature will, in many cases, have a greatly advantageous effect owing to the improvement in the metallurgical structure of the ma third.

It: has been recognized, in many circumstances, that parts thus preheated give much better results, after hardening by heating and quenching, than those which can be obtained with the same parts and the same process but in which the preliminary heating is omitted.

The energy applied for heating and the time between heating and quenching can be adjusted to produce the desired physical characteristics in the heat treated surfaces. Thus, it is sometimes highly desirable to heat to a temperature somewhat above the critical temperature and to allow a certain period of time to pass between heating and quenching for the metallurgical change to take place. to be carried out: before the. quench is applied.

This result is easily achieved by means of the device according to the invention by adjusting the energy supplied to the inductor and by moving the quenching member away from the inductor so as to obtain the necessary time interval between heating and quenching.

The device according to the. fig. 1 is particularly suitable for articles of regular shape, such as rolls & rolling mills. These are often of such dimensions that the energy consumption would be excessive if one wanted to attempt to heat them throughout their length at once. The method described allows the heat treatment of these parts with comparatively low energy consumption.

When it is desired to heat treat a shaft 31 having a portion of a larger diameter, as shown in. fig. 3, a device is used with inductors different from those described above. In this figure, the means for controlling and guiding the cylinder are not shown, but they may be similar to those of FIG. 1.

In the device of FIG. 3, the upper inductor 25 has at 26 such a shape that the heating of the face 27 of the shoulder is reduced as much as possible when the latter comes into its position closest to this inductor. Inductor 25 has an inner annular chamber 28 and an outer annular chamber 29.

The inner annular chamber carries the quench fluid and. the inner circular wall is provided with perforations 30 for the projection of the fluid onto the walls of the shaft 31. The outer circular chamber 29 serves as a cooling envelope for the inductor itself.

Below inductor 25 but separated from it by insulating washer 33 is inductor 34. Immediately below inductor 34 is protective insulating ring 35 which also serves as the spacing for the circular ring. quenching 36.

As the two inductors 25 and 34 simultaneously give heat to the surface of the cylindrical part 31, the heating of this surface progresses as this cylindrical part 31 moves relative to the inductors, the temperature of the surface of the cylinder being at: its minimum at the entry point into the upper inductor, and at its maximum against the insulating ring 35.

By adjusting the relative energy admissions into the two inductors at the moment when the surface 27 of the shoulder reaches its limit position relative to the inductor 25, the heating ratio by the inductor 34 is reduced and that of inductor 25 is increased so that, during a short interval during which the axial movement of cylinder 31 is stopped, the heat is distributed in a substantially uniform manner over the entire surface which is enclosed by the inductors.

At the end of this heating interval, the quench fluid is sprayed onto this surface, through orifices 30, and the entire surface is thus heated and quenched to produce substantially uniform physical properties.

In order to use the chamber 28 as a cooling water duct, a valve system can be provided to control the flow through the ports 30 which remain closed during the heating interval but open under a pressure. sudden increase in pressure which occurs at the desired time for quenching.

The main part of the shaft may be heated and quenched as it progresses through the main inductor 34 to the point where the inductor 25 closely approaches the face 27 of the shoulder and the Current is supplied to inductor 25 so as to heat the area adjacent to the shoulder.

Then, sufficient energy is supplied to the main inductor 34 to: bring the adjacent surfaces i of the part to the critical temperature and to maintain this temperature until the application of the quench. The surface of the workpiece above the quenching member 36 and below the surface 27 of the shoulder having reached the quenching temperature is quenched by the fluid discharged through the openings 30 of the inductor 25. ,

sufficient pressure being employed for the quenching to force the fluid between the shaft and the two inductors 25 and 34.

Tempering of the surface enclosed by inductors 25 and 34 is facilitated by the fact that shield 35 is made of a flexible material so that, under pressure, its top edge will give way allowing the quench fluid to release. descend along the shaft as well as over and outwardly around part 26, of inductor 25.

As it is frequently desired to treat. cylindrical parts having conical parts or of a modified shape, and being able to apply this treatment to all quantities of the same parts, an automatic heating and quenching device is desirable. Such a device is shown in FIG. 4. In this device, the cylindrical part 45 to be treated is fixed to the threaded shaft 47 so as to be suspended therein and to be able to rotate with it.

The lower end of cylinder 45 is centered on a point 48 to prevent eccentric movement. A toothed wheel 49 is fixed to the upper end of the threaded shaft 47. The toothed wheel 49 meshes with a toothed wheel 50 of sufficient axial length to allow its engagement with said wheel 49 over the entire length of: axial path of the latter. The toothed wheel 50 is carried by a shaft 51 on which the helical wheel 52 is wedged.

The worm 53, in engagement with the wheel 52, is controlled by a motor (not shown) mounted on the frame of the device. The threaded shaft 47 passes through a sleeve 54 which is provided with an external screw thread screwed at 55 into the frame of the device as well as an internal thread for its engagement with the shaft 47.

The pitches of the internal and external threads of the sleeve 54 are different in terms of producing different speeds of the axial movement of the part 45 depending on whether the sleeve 54 is held stationary by a friction brake (not shown) or. stop pin 56 has come into engagement with the sleeve and forces the latter to rotate with the shaft, thereby increasing the resistance of the brake. The stop pin 56 can be moved to another position, such as 56 'to change the position where a different rate of axial movement begins.

When the mechanism, driven by motor, described above! lowers the threaded shaft 47 starting from the part 45, the yoke 57, fixed to the guide bar 58 and in engagement with an annular groove of a collar 59 at the lower end of the threaded shaft 47, also makes lower this guide bar with the part 45 and, by the bezel 60 carried by the lower end of this bar, maintains the tip 48 in engagement with the part 45,

thus ensuring the concentric axial movement of the cylinder.

The inductors 64 and 65 are supported in the lower part of the device by the guide block 62 supported on the frame 63. Each of these inductors is composed of sections 66, 67 and 68 (FIG. 5). Guide bar 58 holds section 66 in the correct position, and other guide bars 69 and 70 keep other sections in operating position relative to part 45.

Each of these guide bars is provided with an axially extending cam 71 to cause its inductor engagement section to move radially relative to the workpiece as the workpiece moves. so as to maintain an approximately constant interval between the section and any conical or irregular part of the part, the. cam being shaped to match, the shape of the part.

Guide bars having a rectangular cross section prevent the inductor sections from rotating and only allow radial movement relative to the workpiece. These. Guide bars are isolated from the inductors and provided with pressure wedges 72 as well as guided springs 73 to keep the inductors in contact with the cams. Each of the inductor sections has a portion 74 shaped to properly mesh with its. control cam.

The inductor sections 66, 67 and 68 are provided with parts 75 and 76 which are mutually bonded and which ensure a practically continuous shape, as well as with conductors:

flexible in 77 and 78. The internal faces of the sections are, as in 79, of a shape which approximates as much as possible to the average shape of the. conical or other part of the treated part, so that the heating will be more or less uniform around its periphery, the. rotation of the part during its heating period compensating for any lack of uniformity that might otherwise exist.

The cooling and quenching fluid supply means are shown in. fib. 4. Fluid for the lower inductor is supplied from there, tube 88 through valve 89 and tube 90. Similarly, fluid arriving from tube 91 is supplied to the upper inductor through valve 92 and tube. 93.

C n arm 94 of the. bezel 60 can come into engagement with levers 95 and 96 of the valves as and when. measure- of .the. descent of this telescope during the operation, in iron mant thus first of all. valve 89 and opening subsequently. the. valve 92 after .the shoulder 9 7 .of the. the workpiece has approached sufficiently to inductor 64 and the workpiece surface, which is adjacent to the shoulder, has been sufficiently heated.

As indicated in the. fig. 4, the current is supplied to the inductors by the conductors 98 and 99 connected to the secondary windings 100 and 101 formed of a single turn, of a transformer preferably supplying high frequency current. The primary current is supplied by a suitable generator connected to the primary winding 102 by the conductors 1.03 and 104.

The secondary windings 100 and 101, formed by bars or tubes infested with copper are fixed to the transformer, while the primary winding 102 can be moved axially by means of the lever 105 engaging with the collar 106 fixed to the support 107 of the winding 102. The axial movement of the primary winding influences the current induced in the secondary windings and allows (thus vary the power supplied to these elements.

By moving the primary winding, the current supplied to the lower inductor 65 may be reduced, and that supplied to the upper inductor, increased. By sufficient displacement of the primary winding, the current in the winding 11) 1 can be reduced to practically zero,

and this movement of the primary winding can thus serve to excite or de-energize one or the other of the secondary circuits. In this way, a practical and very rapid variation of the current in inductors 64 and 65 is obtained without forming an interrupting arc and without any serious disturbance:

in .les cir cuits, which makes it possible to increase the heating ratio by the inductor 64 when the shoulder 9 7 approaches this inductor, and simultaneously reduce the heating effect of the inductor 65, in. making possible, in this way, a uniform heating and quenching of the part. cylindrical and conical total of the. part to be treated.

In order to make the adjustment of the transformer automatic, the lever 105 pivots as 108 on an arm 109 of the frame of the device can come into engagement with the end 1.10 of the yoke 57 when the part is lowered, and lifts thus the primary winding 102 at the desired speed.

By making the end 111 of the lever 105 adjustable or else by providing two adjustment means at the end 1.10 of the yoke, the adjustment and the speed of the movement of the primary winding and, from there, the secondary currents are controlled conveniently and precisely.

Certain variations in the shape and extent of the surfaces to be quenched of the part 45 may require still more control means: more exact and capable of a adjustment of greater sensitivity than those which are given by the movement of the primary winding 102.

For this purpose, an automatic control is provided which regulates the total energy transmitted to the primary of the transformer 101, 102. This control comprises the interchangeable and adjustable cam 112 on the shaft 113. The shaft 118 is controlled by the wheel. gear 114, the latter being an action born by the rack 115 formed integrally with the guide bar 58 or fixed to it, this bar moving at the same speed as the part to be quenched.

The rotation of the .came 112 causes a displacement of the piston 116 in the support 117 by compressing the return spring 118 while the rod 119 oscillates the lever 120 carried by the shaft 121.

During the movement of the lever 120, its end 122 moves: in contact with the rheostat 128 and thus varies the excitation of the exciter 124 which, by supplying the exciter winding 125 of the generator 126, varies the excitation. energy -discounted :, to conductors 103 and 104, connected to the primary winding 102.

It will be understood that the calm 112 will be formed and regulated: so that the energy supplied to the inductors can be varied and controlled to properly maintain the speed and intensity of heating, even if the dimensions or the shape of the following. side to heating of room 45: constantly changing.

In certain applications of the device described, it may be desirable: to enclose the mechanism or some of its parts. In this case, the frame of the device can be developed as shown in dotted lines at 126 '. We will understand. that a frame: of this kind can contain the transformer and the inductors as well as the other parts of the mechanism.

By the method described above, the heating is so rapid and, by the use of a source of electrical power of a sufficiently high frequency, can be limited to an area so narrow as the heated area. can be quenched and cooled almost instantaneously, so that by using a steel of the right characteristics and composition, virtually any desired degree of hardness can be achieved.

In addition, heating and cooling take place: at such a speed that virtually no free ferrite forms in the bonding surface: between the hardened zone and the core; so that the maximum resistance is obtained with elimination of @d: cracks or ruptures .of the hardened zone.

It is well known that when a part has been hardened by immediate and complete heating and quenching so as to give extreme hardness, high stresses occur which, if not properly reduced by annealing. or softening, - turn into cracks: or cracks which gradually increase,:

deteriorate the surface and often cause complete breakage of the part. The detrimental effects resulting from the stresses created during the quenching of a workpiece increase considerably during the time between quenching and annealing operations. If the latter is done correctly immediately after quenching, the detrimental effects of the stresses of the latter become practically negligible.

In the process, described, .means are provided by which this annealing can be carried out quickly and economically immediately after the part has been hardened, the annealing taking place as it progresses as it is quenched. -and practically annihilating the: harmful effects which otherwise would result from stresses: quenching.

This process may also be useful in the treatment of non-ferrous metals, although the results may be entirely different :. For example, in the manufacture of articles in copper or in alloys comprising copper, it can be used for partial or total depth annealing of the part, including intermediate annealing between the working pitches.
