Les goujons de fixation de la culasse com prennent deux groupes, dont un groupe de goujons 38, 39, 40, 41 et 42 fixés au bloc- cylindre, traversant toute la culasse, et dont les écrous prennent appui sur la partie su- -Dérieure de la culasse, et un groupe de gou- jon-s4-3, 44, 4b, @v;
--etc., également fixés au bloc-cylindre mais dont les axes traversent les pipes d'admission ou d'échappement dis posés dans la culasse. Les goujons de ce groupe sont plus courts que ceux du premier groupe et leurs écrous sont logés dans des dégagements 47, 48, 49, 50, etc., s'ouvrant latéralement dans la face 31 de la culasse, et ménagés en dessous des pipes.
Internal combustion engine. The invention relates to an in-line polycylindrical internal combustion engine with four-stroke overhead valves controlled by rocker arms and having, in each cylinder, an intake valve and an exhaust valve, the axes of which are located. in a plane normal to the axis of the engine crankshaft.
This engine is characterized, on the one hand, in that the. intake and exhaust pipes open onto the same lateral face of the cylinder head and, on the other hand, in that the valve actuation control device comprises a uric camshaft disposed on the side opposite to said face, and, for each cylinder, two rockers having,
in a plane passing through the axis of the crankshaft and perpendicular to the axes of the cylinders, projections forming an angle with each other and actuated by means of two push rods spaced apart from each other so as to allow the installation and removal of a spark plug mounted in a right located between said rods. The drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention and a variant.
Fig. 1. shows, cross-sectional view along I-1, fig. 2, part of the engine constituting this embodiment.
Fig. 2 shows, seen from above, the same engine cut for the most part according to II-II, fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows a vertical sectional view along III-III, fig. 4, a detail of a variant of the motor of FIGS. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4, finally, shows, seen from below and partially in section along IV-IV, fig. 3, this detail of this variant.
The engine shown in fig. 1 and 2 is a four-cylinder in-line explosion engine.
This engine has a cylinder block on which a common cylinder head is fixed by means of studs and nuts. This cylinder head has, above each of the cylinders 12, 13, 14 and 15, a combustion chamber having in plan a general oval shape and limited in its upper part by two faces forming a dihedron.
In one face of this dihedron, which is normal to the axis of the cylinder, is provided the seat of an exhaust valve 10, while in the other face, which is clearly inclined on the axis mentioned , is provided the seat of an intake valve 11. The combustion chamber is further delimited by a side wall 16, of variable height, the maximum of which is in the vicinity of the exhaust valve 10. The spark plug ignition 25 is mounted in this same region, so that its head protrudes outside the cylinder head on the same side of the cylinder as that on which the single camshaft 18 of the engine is placed.
The seat of the intake valve 11 is arranged so that its projection on the plane of the gasket 17 between the cylinder block and the cylinder head is inside the periphery of the corresponding cylinder, while the projection of the exhaust valve seat 10 protrudes outside this periphery. The axes of the two valves of each cylinder are located in a plane normal to the axis of the crankshaft of the engine, which makes it possible to give the seats of said valves diameters much greater than the current dimensions since the distance between valves of the same type of two neighboring cylinders is relatively large.
The engine valves are controlled by a single camshaft 18, comprising two cams per cylinder. These two cams act on two pushers 19 and 20 acting respectively on two push rods 23 and 24.
The rods 23 and 24 control the corresponding sou popes 10 and 11, by means of two rocker arms 21 and 22, one of which is 21, which acts on the. exhaust valve 10 whose axis is parallel to that of the cylinder, is mounted on a shaft 26, whose axis is inclined relative to the plane passing through the axis of the cylinders, while the other 22, which transmits the movement of the rod 24 to the valve 11 is mounted on a shaft 27 which is common to all rocker arms controlling the intake valves and whose axis is parallel to the axis of the crankshaft. The pivot axes of the rocker arms 27 are therefore all in the extension of each other and the projections of the rocker arms of a cylinder in a plane passing through the axis of the crankshaft and perpendicular to the axes of the cylinders form an angle to each other. with the other.
The joints respectively connecting the rods 23 and 24, on the one hand, to the rocker arms 21 and 22, on the other hand, are located on the side of the cylinder head which corresponds to the camshaft 18 outside the space between two planes, one of which contains the axes of the intake valves and the other the axes of the exhaust valves.
In another embodiment, it could be advantageous to also mount the rocker arms of the exhaust valves on a common longitudinal shaft similar to that which carries the rocker arms 22.
The intake and exhaust pipes arranged in the cylinder head all open out onto the same side face 31 of the cylinder head opposite to the side of the engine on which the camshaft is placed 18. The cylinder 14 intake pipe is joined with the mission pipe of the extreme cylinder 15 and these two pipes have a common inlet port 30. Likewise, the intake pipe of cylinder 13 is joined with the intake pipe of the extreme cylinder 12, and these two pipes have a common inlet port.
The cylinder exhaust pipe 13 is united with the cylinder exhaust pipe 14, and these two pipes have a common outlet orifice 34. The exhaust pipes 35 of the end cylinders open individually on the face 31 of the cylinder. the. cylinder head. The spark plug 25 of each cylinder is mounted at a location located between the push rods 23 and 24 corresponding to this cylinder, these rods being sufficiently spaced apart to allow the installation and removal of the spark plug. The intake and exhaust pipes (not shown) connected to the cylinder head are of the usual type and include known heating devices.
The cylinder head mounting studs comprise two groups, including a group of studs 38, 39, 40, 41 and 42 fixed to the cylinder block, passing through the entire cylinder head, and whose nuts are supported on the upper part. of the cylinder head, and a group of studs-s4-3, 44, 4b, @v;
--etc., also fixed to the cylinder block but the axes of which pass through the intake or exhaust pipes placed in the cylinder head. The studs of this group are shorter than those of the first group and their nuts are housed in recesses 47, 48, 49, 50, etc., opening laterally in the face 31 of the cylinder head, and provided below the pipes .
The variant to which figs relate. 3 and 4 is identical to the motor of FIGS. 1 and 2, - except that the studs 51 for fixing the cylinder head to the cylinder block, the axes of which pass through the intake or exhaust pipes are attached to the cylinder head. The nuts 53 of these studs rest under the upper flange 52 of the cylinder block and are housed in recesses 54 opening laterally in the cylinder block and disposed below the pipes.
One could, for example, obtain an embodiment of the motor according to the invention, similar to that of FIGS. 1 and 2, from a side valve engine by providing the latter with a cylinder head, such as that of the engine of FIGS. 1 and 2. In this case, the push rods actuating the rocker arms will be articulated, at their lower end, in a ball joint resting on the cleats and they will pass through the cylinder block through the housings provided, by construction, in it. for the guides of the primitive side valves.
In general, the passage of said rods is facilitated, if one removes, from the cylinder block, the guides of the old valves which have become unnecessary.
The gasket between the new cylinder head and the bloe-c, 3-liner will rest on the. flat part existing between the seats of the primitive valves and the periphery of the cylinders. If this space is insufficient, we can partially or totally fill the milled part as an extension of the valve seats by means of attached parts that will be easy to attach to the cylinder block inside the housing of the guides of the an old side valves.
An embodiment of the engine according to the invention obtained by converting an existing engine could, if necessary, provide a power greater than that which the primitive engine could provide. A similar transformation could then make it possible, which would be particularly advantageous, to switch from the use of a fuel of high calorific value to that of gasifier gas without reducing the power supplied.
When converting an existing engine to obtain an embodiment of the engine according to the invention intended to be supplied with gas generator gas, account will be taken of the need to increase the compression ratio and it will advantageously be possible provide this embodiment with a double ignition.
