Description

Method and device for irradiating a liquid or gaseous substance.

The present invention relates to a method for irradiating liquid or gaseous substances and a device for carrying out this method.

The method is characterized in that an electrically insulating hollow body, which is well permeable to rays with wavelengths from 1800 to 7000 Angstroms and which has a noble gas filling under reduced pressure, lies under the influence of electrical voltages in the wavelength range from 1800 to 7000 Angstroms Light vibrations generated, which are allowed to act on the substance mentioned.

The device according to the invention is characterized by an insulating hollow body which has a noble gas filling which is under reduced pressure and in which the electrodes used to generate the light oscillations of 1800 to 7000 Angstroms are arranged.

In Fig. 1-7 of the accompanying drawings, an embodiment of the Vorrich device for performing the * method is illustrated schematically.

In FIG. 1, 1 is a measure that is transparent to radiation with wavelengths of 1800 to 7000 Angstroms, that is to say also for ultraviolet radiation, that is to say invisible light oscillations. materially existing, closed at both ends and with a pressure of 4 to 10 - s mm mercury, preferably consisting of a mixture of neon and argon noble gas. s filling of coated cylindrical insulating body. An insulating tube 2 which is open at the lower end and does not reach to the bottom is melted coaxially in this.

At the upper end, on the inside of the body 1 and also on the inside of the upper end of the tube 2 is an annular electrode 3 respectively. 4 attached, the whole in such a way that a relatively long discharge path is obtained with a small distance between the electrodes. 5 resp. 6 are current leads to electrodes 3 and 4.

If a voltage is applied to the electrodes, which can be either direct current or alternating current voltage, then there are light oscillations in the body cavity, some of which are in the ultraviolet area and which, when exiting the body, are in contact with a gaseous or gaseous body act on liquid substance, e.g. B. on tap water, for the purpose of softening the same.

The stresses to be produced in the body 1 can be generated by high-frequency apparatus. For the treatment of water, it is sufficient to apply a voltage with a frequency of 50 Hz to soften it.

In Fig. 2, 1 in turn denotes the closed at both ends cylindrical insulating body, which is transparent to ultraviolet light, z. B. made of quartz glass jacket 7 is surrounded. The space 35 between the insulating body 1 and the jacket 7 is covered with a fluorescent or phosphorescent material, e.g. B. alkaline earth sulfide or zinc sulfide filled.

This is now excited by the radiation generated in the inner tube and sends out rays in turn. In addition, however, light emerges at the upper and lower end of the insulating body 1 that has not passed through the jacket 7 and its filling. 8 and 9 are electrodes attached to the upper and lower ends of the insulating body 1, of which one (8) is connected to the phase of a network by means of the conductor 10, the other (9) to the neutral conductor.

As a result of the described design of the device according to FIG. 2, it emits two types of light oscillations, namely at the upper and lower end of the insulating body generated by the discharges at the electrodes and through the jacket 7 the oscillations generated in fluorescent or phosphorescent material, so that Both types of vibration act simultaneously on the fabric to be treated. In addition, three intermediate electrodes 11 are provided in order to distribute the discharges over a larger area and thereby to achieve a higher efficiency. In addition, when using intermediate electrodes, the insulating body can have a greater length without the voltage having to be increased in comparison to a device without intermediate electrodes.

In the embodiment according to FIG. 3, the insulating body 1 has a constriction 12 in the lower part, in which the counter-electrode 13 to the electrode 14 arranged in the upper part of the insulating body 1 is accommodated.

The capacitor 15 attached to the electrode 13 and separated from the electrode roughness by the restriction 13 serves as a limiter for any overvoltages. 16 is a jacket made of quartz which seals off space 35 in a vacuum-tight manner. In 35 a fluorescent or phosphorescent and radioactive material is housed. In this embodiment, the intermediate electrodes (11) illustrated in FIG. 2 can also be attached between the electrodes 13 and 14.

The embodiment according to FIG. 4 differs from the one described above only in that the counter electrode 13 is arranged above the constriction 12 of the insulating body 1. The latter can be provided with a quartz jacket, as indicated by dotted lines, in its part lying between the two electrodes.

In FIG. 5, the capacitor 15 is arranged in the upper part of the insulating body 1.

At 16, the z. B. denotes existing quartz coat.

According to FIG. 6, the lower part of the cylindrical body 1 has an enlargement 26 in which the two electrodes 27 and 28 are arranged. A glass tube 20, open at the top, is fused coaxially into the body 1, the lower, closed end of which protrudes into the extension 26.

The tube 20 has an enlargement 21 approximately in its longitudinal center, which rests against the inner wall of the body 1 and thereby prevents lateral movements of the tube 20 in the body 1.

The supply lines 22 and 23 for the electrodes 27 and 28 are passed through the tube 20,
As indicated by dotted lines, the extension 26 can be provided with a quartz jacket 29. In this latter case, too, radiation generated by the discharges between the electrodes can reach the substance to be treated directly from the upper part of the enlargement 26 without having to pass through the jacket 29 beforehand.

This embodiment allows the device to be inserted by means of the body 1 into a well-sealed stuffing box in the housing of the apparatus in which the liquid or gaseous substance is treated. The electrode 27 is again connected to the phase and the electrode 28 to the neutral conductor.

FIG. 7 shows, purely schematically and omitting various parts, a variant of the embodiment according to FIG. 6, in which a spark gap 34 is connected to the electrode 27. This spark gap leads to discharges onto the tube and by changing the length of the spark gap, the intensity distribution of the generated vibrations can be varied within the range mentioned above (18007000 Angstroms), which is important for the treatment of various substances.

In one embodiment of the method according to the invention, one or more of the devices described is arranged in the wall of a channel or a container which is used to pass through the gaseous or liquid substance to be treated. The flow rate of this substance is expediently regulated in such a way that the desired effect on the substance is achieved after just one pass.

The described embodiments of the device according to the invention initially have the advantage that they, like all fluorescent tubes provided with inert gas fillings under reduced pressure, have barely perceptible temperature increases during operation, while the quartz lamps previously used for irradiation are known to have temperatures of up to several thousand on the walls occur, so that certain substances are damaged or destroyed in a short time when irradiated with quartz lamps.

As already mentioned, the device is e.g. B. very suitable for softening tap water and other water. The tests have shown that no scale formation occurs in the steam boilers charged with water treated in this way.
