Device for fixing a crank on an axis. The present invention relates to a device for fixing a crank on an axis applicable in particular, but not exclusively, to the cranksets of bicycles.
This device is characterized by at least two keying members distributed around the axis, between the latter and the crank, between which they exert a wedge effect under the action of a clamping member acting axially and to which they are coupled, at least <<the forestay; mounted, so that the loosening of said organ causes their extraction.
The accompanying drawing shows an exemplary embodiment of the object of the invention, given by way of example, and applied to a bicycle crankset with a light metal crank.
Fig. 1 is an axial section of the device.
Fig. 2 is an end view.
Fig. 3 is a set of three keys used in the assembly shown and seen in axial section.
Fig. 4 is. the same set of keys seen at the end.
The device joining the axis 1 to the crank 2 comprises three circular keys with inclined internal walls 3, 4, 5, axially introduced between the axis and the crank, the axis, # e ending for this purpose with a cone 6, in cooperation with which the keys produce a wedge effect.
Tightening is obtained by axial thrust by means of the central screw 7, axially screwed at the end of the axis 1. This screw has a collar 8 penetrating into a corresponding annular groove 9 of the three keys. It is through this collar that the axial thrust for tightening the assembly is transmitted.
But given the solidarity that this collar and this groove provide axially between screws and wedges in assembly condition, it is obvious that by unscrewing the screw, it will remove the wedges, so that it will not be necessary. to extract by another means, for example by knocking on it.
Assembly and disassembly are therefore very simple. During assembly, you just have to take care to hold the keys in place around the screw, then to put the keys and screws simultaneously in place.
The exterior of the keys could be cylindrical and smooth. In the example shown, it is grooved parallel to the axis. The purpose of this arrangement is to increase the contact surface with the inner face of the corresponding opening of the crank and thus to decrease the specific pressure, which is particularly indicated in the case provided, of a metal crank. light, so in aluminum alloy.
Figs. 3 and 4, and more particularly, FIG. 4, show how to make the three keys shown, starting from an externally grooved tube, internally machined and which is then sawed in 10.
It is obvious that there could be more than three keys distributed around axis 1 or also simply two and that the latter do not necessarily have to have a circular section.
Given, on the other hand, that the interior of the keys shown is smooth and fits on a smooth cone of the axle, it may be useful to provide a small Woodruff 11 key, ensuring the assembly of the crank. in the right direction without trial and error.
These two figures also show that it can be advantageous to - give the keys a certain elasticity, in particular in their thick part, by splitting them in the manner indicated at 3 'for the key 3.
The Woodruff key could also be replaced by an ordinary key, for which an entry would then be provided on any one of the keys.
The advantage of the described device lies mainly in the possibility of producing lightweight bicycle cranksets, the light alloy cranks of which can be tightened vigorously on the axle. Assembly and disassembly are also greatly simplified, no special tools being required.
As the cranks can be cast with the bore coming from as-found with enough precision, this part will be bent hard only if machined, which is also an advantage.
In the case of the bicycle crankset, the device described finally has no dangerous projecting part.
