Description

Process for the production of powder from magnetic material. The present invention relates to the production of powder from magnetic cal material which is particularly suitable for cores of Pupin coils, transformers and the like.

For years, the normal production method of finely divided magnetic alloys, such as nickel-iron alloys with or without a third component such as molybdenum, has been to melt the components of the alloy together, to add an embrittling agent to the melt, such as a small amount of iron sulfide, the Casting the material into ingots, deforming the ingots in the solid state when they are hot in order to achieve a finely crystalline structure, and then pulverizing the rolled material.

The cast bars have a length of about 1 m and a cross-section of about 6 X 6 cm and are rolled out as quickly as possible into sheets of about 5 mm thickness. This rolling operation is an expensive and difficult stage in the manufacturing process and the purpose of the present invention is to eliminate this stage.

According to the invention, the molten material, to which an embrittling agent has been added, is poured into plates that are at most 20 mm thick. The plates obtained in this way are cooled so quickly that a fine-grained crystalline structure is created within most of them. The size of the plates determines their possible cooling rate.

In the case of bars of the usual size mentioned above, it has been found that, no matter how fast they cool, their interior consists of long-fiber needle crystals up to 2.5 mm long and 1.5 mm wide, which are cold-deformable and difficult to pulverize . The surface layer, however, consists of a fine-grained polygonal crystal structure that can be processed into fine powder by breaking along the grain boundaries. The usual hot rolling of the bars transforms the entire material into this fine-grained crystal structure.

In the implementation of the present invention, this fine-grained crystal structure is achieved within most of the cross-section of the plate, which then. without any, hot rolling can be pulverized to yield fine dust.

The invention is explained in more detail in the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

The drawing shows: Eig. 1 the structure inside the bars that are hot-rolled, frequently. 2 indicates the grain structure of the surface layer and the Plattenkör pern as it can be obtained using the method of the invention, Pig. 3 shows a casting mold used, for example, to practice the present invention in its individual parts.

Fig. 1 shows the structure of bars of about 6 X 6 in cross section, on a reduced scale, cast from some nickel-iron alloy and containing a percentage of an embrittlement additive.

The body of the metal consists of the above-mentioned fibrous needle-punched valleys! (Dendrite). Show closer examination of the surface layer of the ingot under the microscope; a dense granular polygonal crystal structure of the kind shown in Fig. 2.

It has been found that if the thickness of the ingot is reduced to 20 mm or less, the needle structure can be almost entirely avoided and the material can be pulverized and an economic yield of metal powder is obtained, with a grain size corresponding to 2100 meshes per cm2.

Since the fine-grain crystal structure is achieved by rapid cooling after casting, it is advisable to use a casting mold. preferable that has a considerable heat capacity - a suitable example of such. The mold is shown in a disassembled state in FIG. 3.

The mold consists of the side plates 1 of about 1 meter square of low carbon steel or cast iron; the side plates are separated from one another by the U-shaped intermediate layer 2, which is clamped between the side plates.

This clamp connection can be carried out with a clamp 3. This type of assembly of the mold allows easy handling, especially when removing the cast plate.

The wall thickness of the casting depends on the height of the intermediate layer 2, and a number of U-shaped intermediate layers. different heights can be provided. who to be able to choose the most advantageous height of the intermediate layer for a given alloy.

For alloys of nickel-iron and molybdenum, which can contain up to 19% iron or up to 14% molybdenum at 78 to $ 2% nickel, a thickness of approximately 6 mm has proven suitable to provide plates that have a through and -has a fine-grain crystalline structure.

The molten material can. poured into the mold by means of the tundish 4 who the. This tundish is made of difficult to melt material and is preheated and then placed on top of the assembled cold mold. The metal is preferably poured into the mold through the tundish 4 in that the pouring spoon containing the material

is guided back and forth along the .Slitzes of the tundish. This helps to distribute the heat released by the metal in the mold as it cools. It is completely unimportant if the cast plate cracks or breaks or even contains some cavities, since the plate is intended for the subsequent pulverization.

After the plate has cooled to room temperature, the spit can be broken in a hammer mill, after which the pieces are ground into a fine powder in a ball mill.

To achieve an even finer grain structure of the material, it can. quenched in cold water at recrystallization temperature. The mold can be taken apart as soon as the temperature of the cast plate has fallen to the temperature of the recrystallization of the magnetic material, and the plate can then be quickly quenched in cold water.

The plate can also be reheated to the temperature of the recrystallization and then quickly quenched in cold water. The plate can also be broken into pieces about 6 mm in size,

these pieces are heated to the temperature of the recrystallization. and then be deterred by this temperature in cold water.

The mold in which the plate is cast can be cooled with water if the side plates 1 are replaced by hollow xetal containers through which water circulates. In this case, the loading containers are preferably made of copper.

The present invention is particularly suitable for alloys such as silicon-iron, which are chemically reactive when they are warm, and in which the sinking corner gives rise to undesirable products through direct contact with water.
