Description

Process for the agglomeration of molding sands. It is highly desirable in foundry to agglomerate the core sands and casting sands with the aid of an agglomerating material which, on the one hand, with the heat of the molten metal, burns it completely to allow> outlet of the sand after cooling and which, on the other hand, at the temperature of the molten metal, is sufficiently plastic to yield to shrinkage of the metal during its cooling.

The agglomerants used. currently in foundries do not have this thermoplasticity or only have it insufficiently. This results in cracks which are the cause of significant waste. In order to avoid them, the founder is often obliged to carry out additional work consisting of hollowing out the core after drying.

The process for the agglomeration of molding sands and in particular sands, with cores, which constitutes the object of the present invention, obviates these drawbacks by the fact that one uses as binder a product prepared by mixing a resulting synthetic resin. of a condensation between starch, formalin, urea and phenol with a drying oil and a non-drying oil in the proportions of 75 kg of this resin, in the dry state, for 23 kg drying oil and 2 kg non-drying oil,

the sand being treated with an amount of 2 to 3 percent of this binder. Such a synthetic resin can be prepared as described in Patent No. 254540 (read May 31, 1946, on behalf of the same patentee.

Said resin can be used either in the form of a pulverized solid product, or in the form of a pasty or syrupy product.

The cores prepared in this way with the aid of sands thus agglomerated have the advantage that the binder burns completely while providing the required thermoplasticity, so that the foundry pieces obtained are free from cracks. In addition, the binder based on a starchy synthetic resin offers the advantage of a low cost price.
