Description

Process for coating a continuous strip of non-textile material, in particular paper, with an aqueous mixture, and installation for carrying out this process. Fig. 19 shows another embodiment of the installation that the invention comprises.

Fig. 20 is a view, on a larger scale, of the device for applying the mixture that comprises the installation shown in FIG. 19.

Although the installations shown apply to the manufacture of paper, it will be understood that embodiments may be provided which are generally applicable to the coating of a continuous web of non-textile material.

In fig. 1, which relates to a first embodiment of the installation, 1 denotes a strip of wet paper coming from a paper forming machine and arriving on a guide roller 2. It then passes between rollers 3, on a guide roller 4 and on dryer rollers 5. The web 1 passes, while still wet, around a guide roller 6 and is fed to a set of rollers indicated in a manner. general by 7, by means of which the coating of the strip is carried out. The set of rollers 7 comprises a series of support rollers 8, 9, 10, 11, around which the paper web 1 passes in the wet state, having been subjected only to an initial drying while passing, over drying rollers 5.

The coating is effected on both sides of the strip 1 by a coating mechanism shown in more detail in FIG. 2. A coating mechanism is associated with each of the support rollers 8, 9, 10 and 11, as shown in fig. 1. An offset roll, cooperating with the backing roll 8, is designated 12 and receives mixture from a dispensing roll 14 having cavities which are filled with ink from a suitable ink supply. indicated at 15, the cavities being scraped by a scraper 16 cooperating with the surface of the roller 14.

Similarly, the mixture is fed to an offset roller 17 cooperating with the support roller 9, by means of a distributor roller 18 having, in its surface, cavities continuously supplied with mixture from a reserve 19. This mixture is leveled in the cavities formed in the surface of the distributor roller 18 by a scraper 20 cooperating with this surface.

As seen in fig. 2, each coating mechanism comprises series of associated supports for several rolls, adjustable horizontally. The frame of the mechanism is generally designated by 21 and serves as a base for a support 22 adjustable transversely. The support 22 is provided, on one side, with a rack 23 with which engages a pinion 24 carried by a journaled shaft on the frame 21 and which can be manually controlled by a handwheel 25 by means of which all of the distribution rollers and offset can be moved forward or backward relative to the backing roll.

The offset roll 12 is journaled on an adjustable support 26, which can be moved forward or backward with respect to the backing roll 8, by means of a screw 27 coming. engaged with a screw thread formed in the support 26, this screw being able to rotate, without moving axially, in a tab 22a of the support 22. This screw can be rotated by a head 27a which can receive a key or an appropriate tool . The support 26 can be moved forward or backward relative to the support 22, under the control of the screw 27. Similarly, the support 28, on which the distribution roller 14 is journaled, is also adjustable on the support 26.

This adjustment is made by rotating a screw 29 which passes through a tab 31 of the support 26, in which it can rotate without moving axially. The screw 29 has a head 30 intended to receive a key to move it in rotation so that it screws into the threads formed in the support 28 or that it unscrews. Thus, the distributor roller 14 can be adjusted independently with respect to the offset roller 12, while the latter can also be adjusted independently with respect to the web of material passing over the support roller 8. The scraper 16 cooperates with the surface of the roller. distributor roller 14 having cavities.

In order to adjust the mixing film transmitted from the roller 14 to the offset roller 12 and applied to the paper web, the scraper 16 is mounted in a holder 32, in which it can be easily mounted or dismantled by means of a series. screw 33. The support 32 comprises an arm 32a which is connected by a spring 32b to a tab 34 directed upwards, provided on the support 28. The support 32 is carried by a movable member 35 which can be moved forward or backward. on a screw 36, by operating the head 37 thereof by means of an appropriate key.

The adjustment of the support 32 thus controls the adjustment of the scraper 16 against the surface of the distributor roll 14, controlling the amount of mixture which is supplied to the cavities in the surface of this roller and the amount of mixture which is scraped off the ends of the rollers. cavities.

The mixture is supplied by a reservoir 38 supported by the movable block 35, and this reservoir delivers through a tube 40 the required quantity of mixture which has been shown at 15 on the scraper 16 to supply the cavities dug in the distributor roll 14 A tank 41 is provided below the scraping edge of the scraper 16 and the mixture is recovered through a pipe 42 to be reused. A similar mechanism is provided for the adjustable mounting of the distributor roll 18 and the offset roll 17.

The corresponding parts are designated by the same reference signs provided with a premium to distinguish them from those already used for the assembly comprising the distributor roll 14 and the offset roll 12. Similar assemblies are associated with the support rolls. 10 and 11 shown in fig. 1. The strip of paper, after having passed through the described assemblies, passes over drying rolls generally shown at 43, and under a guide roll 44, then towards calendering rolls 45.

The mixture which is used in the installation described is an aqueous mixture of oil in water which does not tend to coagulate in the cavities formed in the surface of the dispensing drum, but which is sufficiently fluid. to fill these cavities and sufficiently consistent so as not to flood the scraper. The mixture is sufficiently viscous to maintain the conical shape given to it by the inverted cone-shaped cavities when fed to the offset roll, this mixture however being sufficiently plastic to form a layer when applied to the offset roll. The material continues moist by revolution, and by compacting the mixture particles into a uniform layer or film.

In other words, the mixture has high viscosity, surface tension and density. The flow properties of the mixture are such that it flows an appreciable distance before breaking into drops. Regarding the density of the mixture, the percentage of solid substance in the liquid is carefully chosen. With mixtures containing 331% of solid substance, the results are not satisfactory.

Mixtures containing more than 33% of solid matter are therefore used, for example containing 66% of solid matter. The viscosity is generally within the limits of 500 to 1000 centipoise. The main feature of the mixture is that due to its water solubility properties the mixture can easily permeate wet paper and be absorbed by it.

In other embodiments of the plant, the mixture can be applied to the continuous material in various ways.

In the installation to which fig. 3, the mixture is applied to a continuous material 1 as it passes under a backing roll 46. In this installation, a mixing vessel 47 encloses a roll 48 which supplies the mixture to the surface of a dispensing roll. 50, the mixture being renewed in the container 47 via a pipe 49. A scraper 51 scrapes the excess mixture off the surface of the roller 50 and returns this excess mixture to the container 47.

The distributor roll 50 is in contact with an offset roll 52 to which the mixture is fed and which is transmitted to the continuous material 1. The peripheral speed of the rolls 48, 50, 52 and 46 is the same, which can be achieved at by means of a device with gears, chains and chain wheels, or other suitable means. The important thing is that the peripheral speeds are uniform and that the mixing, distributor and offset rollers, as well as the backing roll, are driven desmodromically.

Fig. 4 shows the distributor roller 50 comprising a hollow steel drum 53 bearing an electrolytically deposited close-grained metal coating 54, the surface of this coating having successive cavities on a helix directed approximately at 450 with respect to the longi tudinal axis of the roller, as indicated in 55.

The ends of the drum 53 have plugs 56 fitted inside this drum and from which extend axles 57 for driving the roller.

Figs. 5 and 6 show, on a larger scale, the shape of the cavities formed in the surface of the dispenser roll 50. These cavities are knurled, engraved or otherwise formed in the surface of this roll 50 in rows arranged approximately at 45. relative to the longitudinal axis of the roller, and in a helix around it. The cavities are practically in the form of inverted cones or pyramids as shown at 58. The tops of the cones extend radially towards the center of the distributor roll and are rounded to allow the mixture to be easily discharged and to avoid accumulation of the mixture. mixture in the cavities.

The walls of the inverted cones or pyramids are approximately 900 to each other. The open bases of these cavities are adjacent to each other in the surface of the dispenser roll, leaving a relatively narrow surface band 59 between the cavities 58. These bands will preferably be narrow, so that maximum mix can be dispensed. through the open bases of the cavities 58, and also with a view to greatly reducing the surface friction with the mixing roll, the scraper and the offset roll coming into contact with the face of the dispensing roll. This is clearly seen in Figs. 17 and 18.

In fig. 17, there is shown the result which would be obtained using a distributor roll having cavities 58 'which extend around the surface of the next roll, paths perpendicular to the axis of the roll, separated by narrow surface bands 59 ', while in fig. 18 shows the position of the cavities 58 separated by helical bands 59 on the surface of the distributor roller.

The mixture which accumulates in the cavities 58 'has been shown, in FIG. 17, by (the successive shaded parts of the elements 60 in the form of bands separated by clear parts 61 representing the surface of the distributor roll, 62 denotes a clear strip extending longitudinally with respect to the surface of the distributor roll (fig. 17) on the narrow surface web 59 'The webs 60, 61 and 62 represent elements extending longitudinally on the offset roll which would normally be in contact with the surface of the distributor roll.

With the cavities arranged as shown in fig. 17, it is noted that a very appreciable surface friction with the wear which it comprises appears along the element 62 on the surface of the distributor roll. It will also be noted that for the longitudinal strip 62 at the top, there is no supply of mixture for the corresponding element of the offset roll. According to fig. 18, it can be seen that the band elements 60 'and 62' have only a relatively narrow portion which passes through the bands 59. In addition, there is always a substantial supply of mixture within the elements. 60 'and 62' for the corresponding elements of the offset roll.

Thus, the helical arrangement of the cavities ensures minimum wear of the distributor roll and maximum supply of mixture to the offset roll for any longitudinal element of the distributor roll.

The number of cavities is approximately 34 per cm (85 per inch), the edge of one cavity being spaced from the edge of the adjacent cavity, approximately 1 / 1s $ cm (1/421 "), the width of each cavity is approximately, 4 / 1s8 cm (4/421 "), that is, there are approximately 34 cavities per cm (85 cavities per inch) when measuring along an axis disposed at 450 with respect to the longitudinal axis of the mixture distribution roller, and the space between the bases of the cavities is approximately one quarter of the width of the cavity at its base.

In fig. 5 and 6, the cavities are shown in the form of inverted pyramids 58 having rounded tops which allow the coating substance to be easily removed. The relatively narrow edge 59 between the cavities ensures the supply of mixing or coating to the offset roll at repeated intervals.

In fig. 7 and 8, recesses in the form of inverted cones 108 have been shown with the tops pointing downward into the face of the distributor roll, and the bases of these cones are open to provide unconstrained mixing or mixing. coating substance.

In fig. 9 and 10, there is shown cavities formed in the surface of the distributor roll in the form of hemispheres 109 arranged so as to evacuate the mixture rapidly towards the surface of the offset roll.

The perspective view of the distributor roller shown in FIG. 11 clearly shows the helical arrangement of the cavities 58 in the surface of the roller 50 and the manner in which the fine-grained coating 54 is: carried by the hollow drum 53, of steel, and which may; To be replaced.

Fig. 12 shows, on a considerably enlarged scale, the manner in which a uniform blend film is applied to a web of paper. It will be appreciated that the mixture supplied at 19 is received in the cavities 58 of the distributor roll 18 and is leveled therein by the cooperation of the scraper 20 with the surface of the distributor roll during the rotation thereof. The offset roller 17, which rotates at the same peripheral speed as the distributor roller 18, receives the mixture 60, as shown at 60a, and carries this mixture by a clockwise movement towards the material. continual.

The viscosity, the surface tension and the density of the mixture are such as the individual deposits of mixture 60a, while remaining distinct from each other as seen in FIG. 12, extend until touching, as indicated at 60b. The mixture deposits 60a form a film of uniform thickness as shown at 60c, as the backing roller 9 rotates. The offset roll, 17 has an elastic surface designated by 17a, consisting of a covering of rubber or other similar material.

This overlap gives a plastometer reading of about 120 measured with a ball of about 0.32 cm (1 / g of "); the flexibility and elasticity of the offset surface is such that a film blend. uniform is applied to the material continuously In the installation shown in perspective in Fig. 13, a roll 48, a distributor roll 50, an offset roll 52 and a backing roll 46 are driven at the same peripheral speed. I> 48a, 50a, 52a and 46a represent meshing gears carried by the shafts of the respective rollers.

These gears have teeth which are somewhat elongated so that, during operation of the rollers, the gears remain in engagement during adjustments and provide continuous and desmodromic driving of the rollers. Although a positive geared device has been shown, other devices could be provided for driving these rollers at a uniform peripheral speed. Mixture is supplied from trough 47 to roller 48. The reserve of mixture is renewed in trough 47 from a pipe 49 through which the mixture is continuously pumped as it overflows from the tank. trough 47 through a pipe 63 in a tank 64, 65 designating the pump serving to bring the mixture into the pipe 49.

The installations described can cooperate directly with a papermaking machine of the normal type; they can also be used to apply a coating to the paper independently of the paper forming machine.

In fig. 14 and 15, another embodiment of the installation that comprises the invention is shown diagrammatically, as well as a variant. In the installation of fig. 14, the continuous material 1 passes around support rollers 8 'and 9' which correspond to rollers 8 and 9 of FIG. 1, except that they can be mounted in an independent machine separate from the paper forming machine as shown schematically in FIG. 1. The mixture delivered by a pipe 40 is accumulated at 15 and applied to the surface of the distributor roller 14 and is leveled thereon by the scraper 16 cooperating with this roller.

The mixture is then applied by the offset roll to the continuous material 1 cooperating with the roll 8 '. The opposite side of the continuous material is coated with the mixture delivered through a line 40 'and accumulated at 19 to cover the surface of the distributor roll 18 with which the scraper 20 cooperates. The mixture is then applied by the offset roller 17 on the continuous material 1.

In fig. 15, the continuous material passes around backing rollers 66 and 67 with each of which a cover mechanism is associated. An offset roll 68 applies a strand of the uniform mixture to the continuous material 1 by virtue of the layer of the mixture supplied by a distributor roll 69 which is fed with the mixture from a roll 71 cooperating with a scraper 70. The roll 71 receives its mixture from a trough 72. The opposite side of the continuous material 1 is coated with a mixture film by the action of the offset roll 68 ', the distributor roll 69' and the roll 71 'cooperating with the scraper 70 '. Roll 71 'receives its mixture from a trough 72'.

Thus, it will be appreciated that the mixture can be supplied to the distribution roller in practically vertically planes, while the mixture is transmitted to the continuous material in a horizontal plane.

In fig. 7.6, there is shown a theoretical view on a large scale of the installation of FIG. 7.3, this brief showing the arrangement of roll 48, dispenser roll 50 and offset roll 52 to apply a uniform blend film upward against the continuous material 1 which rests on roll 46. Note that the blend supplied to the trough 47, through the pipe 49, forms an accumulation 77 in which the roller 48 plunges. The mixture is collected by the rotation of the roller, as indicated at 77a, and is brought into the cavities formed in the roller. distributor roller 50, as indicated at 77b.

The excess mixture is removed from the cavities 77b by the scraper 51 cooperating with the surface called the distributor roll, this excess being led, as indicated at 77c, to the mixture reserve 77 in the trough 47.

The scraper 51 is mounted in a support 73 pivoted about an axis 74 from which an arm 75 projects. This arm 75 is biased by a spring 76 in the direction which forces the scraper 51 to come into engagement with the surface of the distributor roller 50 and to scrape the excess mixture to equalize that retained in the cavities, as shown at 77d. The offset roll 52 receives the deposits of the mixture by shooting from the cavities formed in the dispenser roll by adhering the mixture to the elastic surface 52a, as indicated at 77e.

Thanks to the gravitational forces combined with the rotation of the offset roller 52, the mixture, by its viscosity, its surface tension and its density, while forming distinct deposits, spreads out, as shown at 77f, and is applied in a practically uniform 77g film to the continuous material 1. It will be understood that this arrangement, shown in FIG. 16, is considerably enlarged so as to clearly illustrate the method of attaching the coating of uniform thickness to the continuous material.

Fig. 19 shows another embodiment of the installation, comprising a machine for the. forming the paper, presenting the frame 78 with series of dryer rolls 79 on which the paper 1 moves. The web 1 of paper is guided around dryer rolls 80, 81 where it is coated with a coating layer. For this purpose, a mechanism similar to that shown in FIG. 2, but the parts of which are arranged obliquely, so that they form an angle of 450 with the. vertical. The dispensing mechanism preferably forms an angle of about 450 with a plane passing through the longitudinal axes of the rollers 80 and 81.

One side of the continuous material is coated by the mechanism shown generally at 82, while the opposite side of said material is coated by the mechanism shown at 83.

The continuous material, after leaving dryer rolls 85, passes around a guide roll 84, goes to rolls 81 and 80 where it is coated, and from there goes onto the additional dryer rolls shown in a row. generally in 79. Coating mechanisms; shown at 82 and 83 are similar to the mechanisms shown in FIG. 2, except that, in this case, each mechanism forms an angle of 450 with a plane passing through the longitudinal axes of the drying rollers 80, 81.

As shown in fig. 20, the frame 21 of the mechanism 83 and the frame 21 'of the mechanism 82 form approximately an angle of 450 with a plane passing through the axes of the rollers 81 and 80. Similar parts of the mechanism 83 have been designated by numerals. reference provided with a prime in the mechanism 82. These mechanisms differ from those shown in FIG. 2, in that the adjustable support for the scraper 16 is disposed such, with respect to the distributor roll 14, that the excess of mixture accumulated by the roller 86 from the trough 87 is removed from the surface of the machine. distributor roll 14 and returned to trough 87.

The roller and. the trough of mechanism 82 are designated 86 'and 87' respectively. The screw 36 engages an adjustable member 88 which carries the support 89 of the scraper 16. The support 89 is provided with connecting means for a res out 90 which is connected to the arm 91 of the support 28 ', so that it presses continuously, the scraper 16 in contact with the surface of the distributor roll 14. Due to the fact that the continuous material passes clockwise around the dryer roll 80 and counterclockwise around the dryer roll 81, the direction of rotation is opposite in the respective mechanisms.

Therefore, it is desirable to mount the scraper holder 16 of the mechanism 83 above the dispenser roll and the scraper holder 16 'of the mechanism 82 below the dispenser roll, so that the scraper fully cooperates. time with the surface of the dispenser roll of each mechanism, so as to remove excess mixture.

The way of adjusting the relative position of the distributor roll 14, of the offset roll 12 and of the scraper 16, under the control of the handwheel 25, is the same as that shown in FIG. 2, and the corresponding parts have been indicated by the same reference signs in each case or provided with bonuses.

In mechanism 82, screw 36 'is twisted into members 92 and 93 which extend downwardly through slots in bracket 28', into bracket 22 'and into frame 21'. The adjustable screw 36 'engages the member 94 having a lateral projection 95, from which extends a vertical member 96 having a bearing 97 for the scraper 16' which is mounted in the holder 98. A arm 99 extends from support 98 and is connected by a spring 100 to member 95, so that scraper 16 'is constantly pushed into contact. with the surface of the 14 'distribution roller.

The position of the offset roll 12 'and the distributor roll 14', as well as that of the scraper 16 ', can be easily controlled by a combination of adjustment and using a 25' handwheel and a handwheel. screw 29 '.

It will be understood that in the arrangement of the mechanism shown at 82, the scraper support extends downward, while in the arrangement shown at 83, the scraper support extends upward. However, the operating mechanism is similar in each case and the same settings can be made.
