Contact acetylene generator. Contact type acetylene generators are known, the essential elements of which are as follows: 1 Two water reservoirs communicating via their lower part, one of which constitutes the reaction chamber and the other of which contains a mass of gas compressed, during operation., by the pressure of the acetylene formed.
A chimney containing a carbide basket which enters the upper part of the first of said tanks.
3 "A gas reservoir constituted by the chimney and the upper region of the reaction chamber and in which the acetylene gas formed accumulates.
The devices are capable of being tilted around a horizontal axis and of resting in two positions, one corresponding to contact with water and carbide, the other to the absence of contact between water and the carbide, that is to say during operation and stopping respectively.
The pressure of the aeétvlène tends to lower the level of the water in the forming tank. reaction chamber and to reduce the surface area (the contact of water and carbide, and thus to regulate the functioning of the apparatus.
The invention relates to a generator of this type and its object is to make it possible to increase the extent of the contact of water and of the carbide, while satisfying the operating conditions imposed, and in particular that which requires that No generation of acetylene occurs during filling of the generator water tanks.
This generator is characterized in that the basket at. carbide has an inclined bottom, so that, when the basket is seated against the generator, and the generator is inclined in the non-operating position, the bottom of the basket is. substantially horizontal and slightly above water level.
The drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Figs. 1 and 2 are cross-sections, respectively in horizontal position and in inclined position.
The generator shown comprises two communicating water reservoirs 1, l ', separated by a vertical wall, arranged in a cylindrical body, horizontal in the operating position.
A vertical chimney 2 opens into the upper part of the water tank 1 and contains a carbide basket 3.
The start-up is as follows: Everything seems to be inclined around a horizontal axis, perpendicular to the axis of the cylindrical body, and the water tanks being filled up to a certain level, the basket carbide is secured in its position and the generator is returned to a horizontal position. The water reservoirs are arranged such that during this movement the basket plunges into the water contained in the reservoir 1, the reaction takes place and the acetylene is released until the pressure is sufficient to lower the water below the level of the bottom of the carbide basket.
The generator naturally includes indicating or safety devices, which do not relate to the invention.
The back of the basket 3 is inclined with respect to the axis of the cylindrical body at an angle equal to the pivoting angle of the generator, between its operating and stop positions, so that, when the basket is put in place, and that the generator is tilted, in the off position, the backplane is horizontal, therefore parallel to the surface of the water contained in the generator.
The height of the basket is. determined in such a way that the basket can thus be placed in the chimney 2, without it coming into contact with the water.
Furthermore, it is essential to ensure a tight closure of the chimney. In old devices, the basket is movable vertically by means of a rack and cable glands ensure the seal. These devices are dangerous, because if the basket becomes detached from the rack and falls into the water, the pressure of the gas formed risks causing the generator to burst. Also in the generator shown, the chimney 2 comprises an inner collar 4, while the basket comprises bars 5 which rest on said collar and support the basket.
The chimney is closed by a cover 6, strongly applied to it by a screw î, the gasket gaskets. sealed being disposed between the cover and the upper edge of the chimney.
