Description

Machine for tamping ballast between and under railway sleepers. This invention relates to a machine for automatically bringing the ballast from then the outer sides of the rails and in the vicinity of the outer ends of the sleepers of the railway tracks into the spaces comprised between the sleepers for the purpose of compacting it and tamping it down. required level.

This machine has been specially designed to ensure this automatic supply of the ballast under conditions such that the tamping work is made faster at the same time as saving the labor necessary until now to level at the ground. shovel the ballast thus spilled.

The machine according to the invention comprises a transportable frame, a head forming a sheep, tamping members and a mechanism carried by this frame for controlling these members in order to compact the ballast in the intervals between the sleepers. This machine is characterized by shovels mounted on the frame to work transversely to the railway track, in order to bring the ballast which is located along the outer side of this track in the gap between the sleepers to be packed there by the railway. 'action of the tamping members, and by a device controlled by said mechanism controlling the damcurs members, for intermittently actuating the shovels.

In the machine shown, the frame 10 of a carriage or wagon is supported by traction wheels 11, so as to move on the rails a of the railway track. This cart is equipped with an internal combustion engine, a transmission which operates the wheels (not shown) of this cart and a gear by which. is ordered the head forming sheep on which are mounted the tamping members.

The tamping elements are mounted, as has just been said, on a head 16 forming a sheep extending transversely to the carriage and mounted so as to be able to slide vertically in gutters 18 fixed against the lateral flanges 13 of the frame 10. The head 16 controls the tampers to pack the ballast below the sleepers b on which the rails are placed. The frame 10 comprises upper beams 22, longitudinal side beams and transverse beams 17 spaced apart to allow the head 16 and the tamping members to move between them.

The head 16 is lifted intermittently by the energy supplied by a motor mounted on the carriage through the intermediary of a lifting mechanism which releases it in order to allow it to fall and strike the blow in the manner of 'a hammer. A transverse shaft 24 is continuously driven from the motor by an appropriate gear (not shown) and journals in consoles 26 supported by a cross 28 of the frame. Two toothed wheels 30 fixed to the shaft 24, a pair of toothed wheels 36 rotating idle and rollers 38 mounted on chains 33 passing on these toothed wheels print intermittent upward strokes to the head 16 thanks to the impulse taken. to tree 24.

The rollers 38 intermittently attack the stops 39 fixed to one side of the head 16 forming a ram. Each toothed wheel 36 turns idle on a forked bent lever 37 resting at 31 on the frame of the carriage. A spring 42 exerts its action on the raised arm of the lever 37, so as to keep the chain 33 taut. The rollers 38 mounted on the chains 33 attack the stops 39 during their upward travel and raise the head 16 until these gaets escape from the stops at the end of an upward stroke, then free the head 16 and allow it to fall back and act on the tamping organs.

A series of tamping members is provided on each side of the head 16. Two of the members of each series act between the rails of the railway, while the other two act outside the rails. These organs com take heads 46 provided with hanging teeth 50. The organs belonging to. each series being vis-à-vis are supported on axes 47 including. each is carried by a pair of ears mounted on the outer end of a plate 49 integral with the lower end of the head 16.

The tamper or ganes mounted on both sides. other of the head 16 are. opposed one to. the other and ash on the opposite sides of the crossbeam b so. rotate one towards the al-itre to pack the ballast below the ties. Each tamper member is provided with an arm 57 integral with it and rising above its bearing axis 47. The arms 57 of each pair of tamper members are arranged transversely to the transverse central part. railway track and united by a tree 53.

The pivoting movements of each series of tamping members are controlled during the entire fall and ascent of the sheep by a single slide and by rollers 64. Each of these rollers is mounted on a shaft 56 supported by the lower end of two rods 58, the upper ends of which pivot at 59 on lugs 60 forming a body with the head 16.

Each roller carrier shaft 56 is connected by links 68 to the internal ends of shafts 53 of a series of tamping members. The internal end of each link 68 is. articulated to a roller carrier shaft 56 and its external end to one of the shafts 53. The slide 66 along which the rollers 64 move is arranged in the transverse central part of the head 16 and provides a positive guiding of each roller during the travel of this head 16.

The slide 66 comprises for each roller 64 internal and external flat bars on the opposite side of the head 16, a central upright 70 whose opposite faces form the internal flat bars for guiding the rollers 64, and finally external flat bars 73. Each roller 64 is caged between an internal flat iron 71 and an external flat iron 72 to positively control the angular movements of the tamping members.

The upper parts of the internal 71 and external 72 flat irons are vertical and parallel to guide the rollers 64 in a straight line during the upper part of each stroke of the head 16 forming a sheep; their lower parts are curved, as shown at 71a and 72a, to form cams which separate the rollers 64 on each side of the head 16 during the lower part of each stroke of the head and which control the links and the shafts 53 ,

so as to simultaneously rotate the arms 57 and to angularly move the tips of the tamping members inward as the head 16 approaches the lower end of its downward stroke and to pivot the tamping members in direction opposites during the initial portion of each ascent stroke of that head. A screw 40, passing through a bridge 41, supports the slide with the possibility of vertical adjustment in order to allow the tamping members to function on railway tracks whose rails have different heights.

The ends of the slide are supported in an adjustable manner by the frame 10 by means of vertical rods 76, the lower ends of which are welded to the slide. Nuts 78 are screwed on the upper ends of these rods 76 and come to attack bars 79 in the form of a gutter welded to the slide, and sleeves 79a welded to cross members of the frame of the carriage. It suffices to turn the nuts 78 and the screws 40 to adjust the entire slide vertically.

The carriage or wagon being immobilized on the railway track so that the series of tamping units occupy positions with horse head relative to the cross member, the engine is started, which has the effect of intermittently lifting the head 16, then let go to allow it to fall. The rollers 64 and the connecting rods which ensure their articulated connections with the shafts 53 control the pivoting movements of the tamping members. These pivoting movements force the teeth 50 of these members to compress the ballast towards and under the crossbars b and in the spaces between them. The path of the teeth is indicated by the dashed lines x in fig. 3.

The ballast is gradually packed into sleepers until a sufficient amount of ballast has been packed under and between the sleepers to fill the space between them.

The ballast shoveling mechanism which brings it into the path of movement of the tamping organs 50 during the progressive settling of the ballast in the intervals of the sleepers comprises two shovels placed on each side of the frame: of the carriage to be able to shovel simultaneously the ballast that is unloaded near both ends of a tie. Each shovel 80 includes a shoe. curve 81 and an arm 82 fixed to a shaft 83 rotating in a pair of supports 84 and 85 fixed to one of the main beams of the frame. The shovels placed on each side of the machine are fixed to the shaft 83 in order to be able to execute joint pivoting movements.

The mechanism which controls each pair of shoes 81 comprises an arm 86 fixed to one end of the shaft 83 and a device controlled by a pressurized fluid, such as compressed air, which comprises a cylinder 87 supported. pivoting in 88, and a piston slidable in the c @ -lindre 87 and including. : the rod 89 is articulated by a pin 90 at the opposite end of the arm 86 (FIG. 4).

When compressed air enters cylinder 87, the piston therein moves rod 89 and rotates arm 86, shaft 83, arms 82, and shoes 81 to shovel some ballast mass. from the piles at the ends of the ties and thereby bring the ballast into the gaps on the opposite sides of each tie. A spring 91 tensioned between the rod 89 and the frame brings back the piston in the cylinder 87 as well as: the shovels controlled by it.

An elastic buffer 92 (FIG. 9) is embedded in a console 93 integral with the support. 85 to stop the rod 89 when it comes to the end of its outward stroke. Each shoe 81 is articulated by means of an axis 94 on its arm 82, and a spring 95 is stretched between this shoe and the arm 82, in order to maintain this shoe with a certain flexibility against a stop 96 of the arm 82 during the novelties. shovels inward and allow the hooves to pivot in the same direction as each hoist moves outward.

These devices controlled by a pressurized fluid actuate the shovels to fill the gaps between the sleepers with ballast, after which the ballast is packed by the tampers 50.

The one of the shovels 80 of each pair which is farthest forward has an effective radius a little shorter than the shovel which comes behind. As a result, the first shovel moves a certain amount of ballast from the heap on one side of the track-supporting ballast bed to bring it into the sleeper gap ahead, relative to a track. traversed cross, while the shovel placed behind, and which is longer, simultaneously moves the rest of the ballast of the heap, which was not displaced by the first shovel,

to bring it in the gap located behind the sleeper in question, that is to say where the first shovel brought the first part of the pile during the previous step.

The actuation of the shovels 80 is ensured automatically during the ascent of the head 16 forming a ram and the clamping members 50. The device controlled by a pressurized fluid which actuates each pair of shovels placed on one side of the machine communicates with a compressed air tank 98 mounted on the frame of the carriage. Each pair of shovels is controlled by a valve 99 mounted on the frame and actuated periodically by a device provided on the sheep head 76, so as to control the flow of compressed air to each cylinder and from each cylinder. cylinder 87.

Each valve 99 (FIG. 6) comprises a shutter member 100 housed in a housing 101, a rod 102 connected to this member 100, a lever 103 bearing at 104 on the housing 101 and provided with a cam 105 intended to release. place the rod 102, finally an arm 106. Two opposed springs 107 (fig. 4, 5) are connected to one of the ends of each lever 103 as well as to the frame, so as to maintain this lever normally in its position centered and to allow the shutter member 100 to interrupt the supply of compressed air to the cylinder 87. A pipe 98 '(end 4, 8) brings the compressed air from the reservoir 98 to the inner chamber of the cylinder. housing 101, which is normally closed by member 100. Another pipe 108 provides communication between the capacity of housing 701 and cylinder 87.

A second normally open shutter 100a, which is provided on rod 102, controls the flow of air from pipe 108 and cylinder 87 through port 109 to atmosphere. The arm 1,06 of the lever 103 is controlled by a button 110 (FIG. 4) connected with the possibility of adjustment to a bar 111 fixed to one of the faces of the head 16 forming a sheep. A slot 112 made in the bar 111 allows vertical adjustment of the button 110. During the downward stroke of the. head 16, the button 110 engages the arm 106 and causes the lever 103 to pivot in the direction corresponding to the distance of the cam 105 from the stem 102 of the valve, so that the spring. 113 keeps the shutter member 100 closed.

The rod 102 is therefore not actuated. After the button 110 has passed under the arm 106, the lever 103 is. returned to its centered position by one of the springs <B> 107. </B>

During the ascent of the head 16, the button 110 attacks the arm 106 and rotates the lever 103 to open the member 100 and. close organ 100a. This allows the compressed air from the reservoir 98 to flow into the pipe 98 ', pass through the member 100 and come through the pipe 108 into the cylinder 87 all. by closing. the shutter 100a, that is to say while isolating the exhaust port 109. The compressed air which is in the cylinder 87 actuates the rod 89 to print on the shovels 80 connected to it a movement. towards the inside.

When the button 110 moves away from the arm 106 during the upward stroke of the sheep head 16, one of the springs 107 returns the lever 103 to its normal position, which has the effect of moving the cam 105 to release the rod 102 from the valve and close the shutter member 100, thus cutting off the flow of air to the pipe 108 and simultaneously opening. the shutter member 100a to allow the compressed air to escape from the cylinder 87 to the atmosphere as it passes. through pipe 108 and orifice 109. These devices automatically control the compressed air distribution sys tem which imbues the excavators 80 with their key working strokes.

When cutting the ballast between and under the railway ties, a sufficient quantity of loose ballast must be fed into the gaps between the ties to approximately fill them. When the clamor units descend, the ballast is packed into said intervals, which lowers its level. Ballast is then added to fill the gaps between the sleepers during the successive strokes of the clameurs. During the initial strokes of these members, that is to say when the ballast brought into the intervals between the sleepers undergoes settlement, the shovels 80 remain at rest.

The buttons 110 integral with the sheep head 16 are located above the levers 103 until the clameur members 50 are lowered to below a predetermined level and the ballast is packed to a minimum. level such that it allows the head 16 to fall low enough to come to settle below the arm 106 of the lever 103. When this occurs, the buttons 110 actuate, during the next rise of the head, the levers 103, that is, they control the valves 99 to actuate the scoops 80 and move the additional amount of ballast that is needed to complete the filling of the gaps between the sleepers.

It can be seen from the foregoing that this machine for tamping the ballast comprising an apparatus for shoveling the ballast deposited along the ends of the sleepers to bring it into the intervals between the sleepers, makes manual labor superfluous in view of this result.

This shoveling apparatus accelerates the operation of tamping the ballast .because it causes the latter to arrive in the intervals (the sleepers with a view to its mechanical settling during the operation of the motors. The supply of the ballast. by shoveling in the spaces in question is controlled by the intermediary of the head 16 forming a ram, by the level of the ballast which is packed in the intervals between the sleepers; the shoveling remains at rest until this ball last must be supplemented by an additional quantity of ballast to fill the gaps.

The devices actuated by the pressurized fluid impart rapid movements to the shovels which enable them to project the ballast into the gaps between the sleepers for distribution between their central parts and their ends.
