Description

Process for the production of metal powder. The invention relates to a method for the production of metal powder suitable for use in powder metallurgy.

In the case of so-called metal-ceramic objects produced by powder metallurgy, which are hereinafter referred to as pressed bodies for the sake of simplicity, the structure of the pressed body depends on the pressure used to compress the body and also on any embossing carried out after sintering more or less porous for the purpose of compacting the object.

As a result of this porosity, it is not to be expected that such pressed bodies will have the same strength and the same different mechanical properties as cast metal bodies made from the same metal. Experience has shown that powders consisting of elements are vorzuzie hen because with a few exceptions, such as. B. brass powder, which contains a copper-zinc alloy, the powder consisting of alloys are so hard that it is difficult to shape them or to produce compacts from them.

In order to achieve desired properties that are unattainable with powders consisting of a single element, mixtures consisting of various metal powders formed from individual elements have been produced and such mixtures have been subsequently compressed and sintered, which in certain cases is a practical one usable method provided. In the case of a copper-tin mixture, the tin melts during sintering and the molten metal differs into the copper, forming a useful alloy. There were also existing mixtures of iron and carbon used for the purpose of improvement.

The physical properties of the compact compared to pure iron, but this method is more difficult because the diffusion of carbon occurs in the solid state. In the case of other alloy metals, such as nickel or chromium, whose addition to iron is desirable in order to improve the physical properties of the end product significantly, it has been found that the production of alloyed compacts is uneconomical because of the very high temperatures and long sintering times that are required to achieve somewhat improved results.

It has been found that if alloying elements are applied in the form of a satisfactory coating to the powder particles forming the base metal, diffusion is significantly accelerated because there is intimate contact between the base metal and the alloying element or elements, and attempts have been made undertaken to produce such coated powders. One such attempt has been to electroplate the particles, and attempts have also been made to coat particles by chemical precipitation.

So far, however, none of these methods have given a satisfactory result because the electroplating is costly and because it is difficult to achieve a satisfactory uniform coating on the particles and because when coating by chemical deposition it is difficult to produce a good coating, which adheres sufficiently to the powder particles, the difficulty being due to the relatively porous nature of the coating and other factors.

In none of the cases mentioned does the coating have the adhesiveness and intimate bond that are necessary to provide a powder with a completely satisfactory coating for the further treatment, compaction and sintering that are characteristic of the metal ceramic production of pressed bodies . Due to the nature of the over train achievable by plating alone, the results achieved, including the subsequent metallurgical treatment, were generally only comparable with results which can be achieved through the use of mechanical mixtures consisting of different metal powders.

The subject of the present patent is a process for the production of metal powder suitable for use in powder metallurgy, which is characterized in that the individual metal powder particles are provided with a coating made of a different metal and that the bond between the coating metal is established and the base metal of the individual particles is reinforced by subjecting the material to a subsequent heat treatment, the temperature and duration of which are limited in such a way that after such heat treatment the material is sintered at most so strongly that it can be easily ground again.

As has been shown, particles can be formed in this way in which diffusion and / or penetration of one or more alloy elements into the base metal of the particle, especially into the intergranular grain boundaries, takes place in the individual particles: in such a way that the powder diffuses and The pressed bodies to be formed from them are given physical properties that are significantly better than the properties that can be achieved by simply plating the particles or with powder mixtures, and which are comparable to:

the properties that would be obtainable if it were practically possible, please include to compress and sinter existing particles from corresponding metal alloys conditions to compacts. The size: the diffusion of the penetration achievable by annealing is a function of temperature and time, because comparable results can be achieved with lower temperatures, which act for a longer time and with higher temperatures, which act for a shorter time.

In general, it is more economical to use higher temperatures within practical limits for a shorter time than to use lower temperatures which require a longer exposure time. In any case, however, the minimum temperature is that at which the bond between the coating metal and the base metal is strengthened! In many cases the temperature is advantageously maintained at a level at which the clad metal is at least partially sintered.

The annealing temperature, however, must not be so high that a firmly adhering body is produced, as is the case with the production of a compact from powder by sintering. Rather, the annealing temperature must be limited in such a way that, if a partial .Sintering:

should take place, the baking mass produced is formed by very weakly cohesive particles, which represent a tearable mass that can easily be broken up into individual particles, for example by simple sieving. Such a heat treatment can improve the quality of the coating by reducing or even eliminating any porosity of the coating.

Furthermore, the solid bond between the coating and the base metal can be achieved by diffusion, the size of which is determined by the duration and temperature of the annealing process. In addition, otvde and other undesired compounds and gases included in the coating can be removed from the coating during the annealing process, the annealing being expediently carried out in a neutral or reducing atmosphere, preferably in a hydrogen-containing gas atmosphere.

The particles are preferably coated by chemical precipitation because this method is usually less expensive and provides a more uniform coating than is possible with the known electroplating methods. Although the coating is generated by chemical precipitation A somewhat more porous coating is to be expected than with the galvanically produced coating, this undesirable property is significantly reduced by the subsequent heat treatment.

The following serve as an example for the production of an iron powder containing 0/0 nickel as a coating: 100g freshly annealed iron powder or iron powder which is concentrated in a solution of 1 'part HCl. was pickled in 20 parts of solvent, added to 200 cubic meters of a solution containing 8.1 g of NiCl. . 6H.0 (2 g Ni) contains. The solution is heated to 90 ° C. with constant stirring.

After half an hour there are no more traces of nickel in the solution. A flaky precipitate of iron salts remains in the solution. This is separated from nickel-plated iron powder by decanting. The powder is subsequently annealed at 760 to 871 C in a hydrogen-containing atmosphere for 15 minutes to half an hour.

This treatment produces a friable sintered mass which can easily be grinded to powder by sieving using a sieve with a US-3I lens size of 100. Under the microscope it can be seen that the nickel has diffused into the intergranular boundaries of the iron particles. There is also a firmly bonded surface on the particle surface. Never @ kelschicht.

Although only nickel-plated powder was mentioned above, it can be used. The process is not limited to nickel coatings. Improved results can also be achieved with other metal combinations. For example, copper-clad powders which had been produced according to the method according to the invention were tested and it was found that they have improved properties.

As an example of a copper-clad powder, iron powder was provided with a copper coating as follows in such a way that a copper content of .1% results. 100 g of freshly annealed iron powder or iron powder, grain size U, pickled in one reading of 1 part hydrochloric acid in 0 parts solvent.

5.-11 Pocket size 100 to 10 g copper oxalate (CuC.0.t .1 / 2H90) added, which is in 200 em3 water. The mixture is stirred at room temperature until there are no more traces of copper oxalate (10 to 15 minutes). The result is a mixture consisting of copper-plated iron powder and suspended oxalate precipitate. The oxalates are removed from the plated powder by decanting.

The powder is subsequently calcined for 15 minutes at 760 ° C. in a hydrogen-containing atmosphere. The visibly sintered mass is then ground up and sieved through a sieve with 100 mesh size US.

It is also possible to produce powders whose base metal powder is coated with a metal which is itself an alloy, such as an alloy of copper and nickel. If such substances are produced by the process according to the invention and then tested, it is found that they have improved properties. As an example of the manufacture of such a substance, iron powder was plated as follows,

to deliver a material zii with a content of 4% copper and 2% nickel. First 100 g.

Iron powder is treated as described above to produce a copper-clad powder with a copper content of 4%. After separating the powder from the precipitated oxalates, it is added to 200 em3 of a NiCl2 solution, which contains 8.1 g of NiCl2. Contains 6H20 (2 g Ni). The mixture is stirred and heated to 80 to 100 C until no traces of Ni are visible in the solution.

Subsequently, the coated powder is separated by decanting, washed and calcined in a hydrogen-containing atmosphere for 15 minutes at 760 ° C.

As mentioned above, the physical properties of the pressed bodies which have been produced from powders produced by the process according to the invention are significantly better. Although in the preceding examples the powders have been provided with a chemical coating, the invention is, as already mentioned, not limited to this special type of coating production, because electroplating methods can also be used,

and powders have been produced with a satisfactory electroplating coating. The method below is intended as an example. An electrolyte was prepared, consisting of nickel sulfate (N'S04.7H20: 120 g per liter), ammonium chloride (NH4C1: 15 g per liter) and boric acid (H3B03: 1: 5 g per liter), the pH is 4.5.

One liter of this electrolyte is placed in a small plating device with a rotating drum and a nickel anode, together with 200 g of iron powder with a grain size of US sieve number 100. An electric current of 4 to 41/2 volts and 4 amps is left for half an hour flow through at room temperature, the drum rotating at 11 T (min. This process produces nickel-plated powder, which, after heat treatment, has the property of penetrating and diffusing the alloy metal.

From the above it is clear that the principles of the process according to the invention can be applied to a large number of different combinations of metal powder by means of various specific processes, depending on the nature and properties of the desired end product.
