Ferrochrome deearburization process. The invention relates to a process for de-carburizing ferrochrome containing 50 to 90% chromium, in the solid state and under reduced pressure, said decarburization being accompanied by the elimination of a very large proportion of the sulfur as well. present in the ferrochrome.
For the preparation of many iron alloys containing chromium, it is very advantageous to employ low carbon ferrochrome as a key source of chromium. In the current state of the art, the low-carbon ferrochrome is generally prepared by the reduction process with silicon. The raw materials used are mainly chromium ore, silicon or an alloy of silicon, and fluxes. The operation is carried out in the molten state, generally in an electric open arc furnace.
The reduction of the chromium ore is carried out according to the following equation: Fe0Cr2O3 + 2Si = 2Cr + Fe + 2SiO2 It is also known that ferrochrome with a low carbon content and containing no more than 30% lo of chromium can be prepared. by heating a mixture of the ferrochrome and a ground metal oxide to a state of extreme fineness, under reduced pressure and at a high temperature, but below the melting point of the feed.
The process according to the present invention, for the decarburization of ferrochrome containing 50 to 90% chromium and undesirable amounts of carbon and sulfur, is of the type in which the finely divided ferrochrome is mixed with a fine oxidant. The mixture is divided and heats the mixture under a pressure below atmospheric pressure and at a temperature sufficient to cause decarburization, but below the melting point of the mixture.
This process is characterized in that, in order to also obtain a desulfurization of the metal, at least 10 lo of the combined oxygen of the said oxidant is present in the form of silica.
Oxidizers other than silica can. include, for example, chromium oxide, iron oxide, manganese oxide and oxygenated salts such as carbonates.
The present process is advantageously carried out as follows: the ferrochrome and the oxidant are ground to the state of extreme fineness, preferably to the state of particles with a dimension of less than 30 microns, then one mixes them intimately.
Tablets or agglomerates are formed with this mixture, whereby perfect contact is achieved. between the reacting particles while leaving the necessary interstices. the escape of reaction gases; in addition, we also facilitate. handling the load. Binders, such as chromic acid and water can be used for. the formation of tablets. The tablets are loaded into a vacuum oven and heated in vacuum or under reduced pressure until carbon and sulfur have been removed to the degree desired. The temperature suitable for heating the tablets is usually above 1150 C and below 1400 C (melting temperature).
Example: 2120 parts by weight of finely ground carbon-rich ferrochrome having approximately the following composition are intimately mixed:
EMI0002.0002
Chromium <SEP> 68.11%
<tb> Iron <SEP> 26.81%
<tb> carbon <SEP> 4.72%
<tb> Sulfur <SEP> 0.12%
<tb> Silicon <SEP> 1.46% and 276 parts by weight of finely ground siliceous rock containing 99% silica, with 42 parts by weight of chromic acid and 79 parts by weight of water and formed by compression , with the mixture, agglomerates of oval shape of approximately 3.18 cm long, 2.225 cm wide and 1.84 cm thick.
The tablets are dried, loaded into an oven and heated to a temperature between 1250 and 1300 ° C at an absolute pressure of about 2 mm of sea curing for about 25 hours. The composition of the final product is approximately as follows:
EMI0002.0004
Chrome <SEP> 66.98 <SEP>%
<tb> Iron <SEP> 25.54 <SEP>%
<tb> Carbon <SEP> 0.01 <SEP>%
<tb> Sulfur <SEP> 0.009 <SEP>%
<tb> Silicon <SEP> 6.20 <SEP>%
<tb> Silica <SEP> 1.12 <SEP>% Tablets prepared as described above are in a form which is immediately suitable for the preparation of high quality steel alloys, eliminating the need for operations. slag removal and grading kits specific to melt preparation processes.
The low-carbon ferrochrome prepared in accordance with the invention is usually in the form of an extremely compact agglomerate, of uniform elm porosity, possessing a strong adhesion, fine-drawn, non-friable and well-agglutinated, containing from 50 to 90% chromium, the remainder being essentially 50 to 90% chromium, the remainder being mainly iron. The carbon can be present in an amount not exceeding 2%. In the preferred composition, the chromium content is between 65 and 75% and that of carbon between 0.01 and 0.06%.
Due to the interstices which separate the agglomerated particles, the bulk density of the product is lower than that of low-carbon ferrochrome obtained by a smelting process, a property which constitutes a significant metallurgical advantage. In the 700% chromium grade, the bulk density is approximately 6.7. The average density of the product can vary between 5.6 and 6.5 depending on the composition and the degree of porosity. The product has a gray metallic color. The surfaces of the fractures are shiny and have a fine grained appearance instead of the coarse-grained crystal structure of low-carbon ferro-chromium prepared by fusion.
It is advantageous to carry out the decarburization at as high a temperature as possible to reduce the total residence time in the furnace. Partial melting of the charge must, however, be avoided, which would interrupt the reaction prematurely by obstructing the pores of the tablets and thus preventing the released gases from escaping.
The single figure in the attached drawing is a typical diagram of the constitution of the ferrochrome. quality trade at 701 / o chromium. Note that the eutectic corresponds to a carbon content of about .7% and that the melting point of the eutectic is about 1265 C.
If tablets of such a ferrochrome and oxidant are heated to a temperature above 1265 C but below 1300 C, the outer surfaces of the tablets undergo faster decarburization from the interior and, when the carbon content has decreased to 2.7%,
the surface of the tablets melts, forming a film which cuts the inside (the continue to decarburize in an efficient manner. It is found that after this treatment the tablets consist, inside, of a unreacted mixture, similar to stone. To avoid this drawback, the tablets can be decarburized at a temperature below 1265 C, but at this low temperature the decarburization treatment is excessively prolonged. .
It has been found that by adjusting the variation in temperature, it is possible to significantly accelerate the reaction, without compromising the efficiency of the decarburization of the tablets, the variation in temperature being a function of the carbon content at each instant. processing.
It can be seen from the diagram that the temperature of the solidus curve drops as the carbon content drops, and that it rises sharply when the carbon content decreases below its value corresponding to l 'eutectic. As a result, the temperature of the charge can be increased as the decarburization progresses without risk of melting, provided that the temperature of the solidus is not significantly exceeded.
In practice, the treatment temperature may be slightly higher than the solidus curve during the first part of decarburization, and it should decrease below the melting point of the product when the carbon content eutectic is about to be reached. Then, when this content has become lower than the eutectic content, the temperature can again become higher than that of the solidus curve and can even tend towards the temperature of the liquidus curve in the last part of the reaction, when the carbon content is weak.
This increase in temperature in the latter part of the reaction is possible, since if the residual product with a high carbon content were to melt at this time, its quantity would be insufficient to obstruct the interstitial spaces of the tablets and thus prevent decomposition. - carburetion to be carried out in an efficient manner.
It has been found, for example, that when treating ferrochrome tablets rich in carbon with about 70% o chromium (65-75% o) and oxidant, the temperature of the solids may be exceeded until it reaches a maximum temperature of about 1300 C in the first part of the decarburization treatment, when the carbon content of the ferro-chromium at any point in the feed is greater than the eutectic content (about 2.7% carbon) , without causing a partial fusion sufficient to obstruct the interstices and, consequently, destroy the porosity of the tablets.
When the carbon content to. the surface of the tablets becomes close to the. eutectic content, the temperature value becomes critical due to the point. The relatively clean melting point of the product, and the process temperature, should drop below the eutectic temperature (about 1265 C). Since the tablets gradually decarburize at. different speeds in different portions of the.
load, the temperature of the heater should be kept below 1 - 65 C (or the melting temperature of the eutectic corresponding to other compositions) until the carbon content of the portions of the load, whose. the temperature is very close to that of the oven, ie at all points below 3 la. eutectic content, and, at this time, we can again raise the. furnace temperature above the solidus curve, and, when the carbon content is low, the temperature can. become close to that of the liquidus curve due to the decrease in the.
proportion of the element to point. low phis fusion. However, care must be taken to raise the temperature during this latter period to a rate low enough so that the onset of melting does not prevent the feed from continuing to decarburize.
