Asbestos-based agglomerate and method of manufacturing this agglomerate. It has already been pointed out in patent N 282513 that it is possible to agglomerate asbestos with an organosilicon resin and obtain, after suitable treatment of this agglomerate, light materials having excellent mechanical resistance. , remarkable electrical qualities retained despite the action of humidity and good resistance to high temperatures, usable as such in many fields, such as the electrical and radioelectric industries, as fire walls, etc.
It was pointed out in the patent. above that one can. to obtain good agglomerates with relatively small quantities of resin, as long as the agglomeration is carried out under a pressure or at a temperature higher than it would be. necessary to obtain agglomerates having equivalent qualities with a larger quantity of resin.
Thus, for example, by operating under a pressure of 500 kg / cm2, it is possible to obtain good insulating materials consisting of organosilicon resins and asbestos and in which the weight ratio of resin to asbestos is only 5%, while with a pressure of 50 kg ; :
'em2 only, the weight of the organosilicon resin must represent about 20% of that of the asbestos so that the material obtained has a mechanical rigidity close to that of the preceding one.
In any case, to obtain a rigid material that is easy to work mechanically according to the techniques described in the aforementioned patent, it is necessary to use a sufficient quantity of resin.
It is known, on the other hand, that ethyl silicate can be partially hydrolyzed to give a polyethyl silicate capable of constituting a well-known agglomerating agent. These ethyl polysilicates are obtained, for example, from ethyl silicate to which water is added slightly acidulated with hydrochloric acid, but the materials obtained by agglomerating asbestos with ethyl polysilicates are very bad electrical insulants. They are, on the other hand, very sensitive to humidity and become brittle under the action of fire. These properties exclude their use as electrical insulators and as a firewall.
He. It has now been found that if one agglomerates asbestos with a mixture of organosilicon resin and polyethylene silicate, one can significantly reduce the amount of organosilicon resin in the agglomerate and yet obtain materials which have good mechanical rigidity, are very good electrical insulators not very sensitive to the action of humidity and resistant to the action of fire, comparable and even sometimes superior, contrary to what one would expect , agglomerates based on organosilicon resin alone.
These materials, owing to the reduced proportion of organosilicon resins which they contain, are economically advantageous over agglomerates consisting solely of asbestos and organosilicon resins.
The present invention comprises a mechanically rigid asbestos-based agglomerate and a method of manufacturing such agglomerate.
The latter is characterized in that it consists of asbestos impregnated with an organosilicon resin and ethyl polysilicate.
The method of manufacturing such an agglomerate is characterized in that the asbestos is impregnated with a mixture of an organosilicon resin and of ethyl polysilicate and in that the product thus obtained is subjected to treatment by heating under pressure at least vigorous enough to cause insolubilization of the organosilicon resin.
The heating in question could for example be carried out at a temperature markedly higher than that which would be sufficient to cause the insolubilization of the. resin or for a period longer than that necessary to cause said insolubilization, or else by combining these two measures.
As organosilicon resins we can use the most diverse organosilicon resins by the degree of substitution or the nature of the organic radicals attached to the silicon. It is thus possible to use organosilicon resins substituted by methyl, ethyl, methyl-phenyl, etc. radicals. It is advisable to operate in the presence of a common compound of resin and ethyl polysilicate.
For example, an alcohol such as methyl or ethyl alcohol, or mixtures of solvents based on these alcohols, can be employed in the case where methyl polysiloxanes are employed as organosilicon resins. If resins substituted with methyl-phenyl radicals are used as organosilicon resins, they can be dissolved in benzene which is also a solvent for the ethyl polysilicate.
The mixture of the organosilicon resin with the ethyl polysilicate can be done in several ways: one small for example, to prepare the alcoholic solution of polysilicate by partially hydrolyzing said ethyl silicate (containing. Already , or not ethyl polysilicate) pure or in alcoholic solution with water slightly acidified with hydrochloric acid and then mix this solution with a dry organosilicon resin or in solution.
We can. also add ethyl silicate to the solvent of the resin, add alcohol if the medium is not alcoholic and hydrolyze this complex solution with water acidulated with hydrochloric acid. The impregnation of asbestos in its various forms such as felt, filler, loaded asbestos, etc., with these complex solutions of organo-silieic resin-ethyl polysilieate can be carried out according to the techniques described in the aforementioned patent. After a slight optional preheating in an oven under normal pressure or under reduced pressure, at temperatures of the order of 100 ° C., agglomeration is. carried out under pressure, in a heated press.
It should be noted, as was also pointed out in the aforementioned patent, that each of the factors making it possible to improve the quality of the agglomerates (quantity of agglomerating material, temperature, pressure, of the treatment rate) small, if one implement it with sufficient intensity to overcome the insufficiency of one or more other factors. All conditions being equal, the influence of a rise in temperature is quite remarkable. Baking at around 300 C or above. gives much better results than cooking carried out at around 200 ° C. at equal pressure and quantity of binder.
The respective amounts of the two constituents of the agglomerating mixture. may go laughing to some extent. Their choice also depends, for obtaining satisfactory product qualities, on the pressure employed during the agglomeration process. For pressures of the order of 400 kg / cm 2, agglomerates having the excellent properties mentioned above are obtained using 2 to 20 parts by weight of resin and 5 to 20 parts by weight of polysilicate. ethyl per 100 parts of asbestos to be agglomerated.
Preferably, for these pressures, a total quantity of binder (resin + ethyl polysilicate) representing 10 to 30 parts per 100 parts of asbestos to be agglomerated is used. For high phis pressures, the amount of binder can be greatly reduced; Example 8 below describes an agglomerate prepared at 2500 kg / cm2 in which, for 100 parts of asbestos, 0.5 part of organosilicon resin and 2.5 parts of ethyl polysilicate are used, which corresponds 3 parts of binder for 100 parts of asbestos.
The materials obtained under these conditions are water-repellent and mechanically rigid; they have an impact sound reminiscent of a sheet metal plate and can be worked with a tool: they can be drilled, sawed, turned, etc. They do not transmit heat and also have good electrical properties. These different qualities make them suitable for the most diverse uses, for example as insulators in the electrical and radioelectric industries, as thermal insulators and especially as fire walls, particularly where it is important to respect strict safety instructions, for example. example in the aeronautical, naval industries, etc.
The following examples illustrate some preferred embodiments of the present invention and indicate the properties of the agglomerates obtained. In these examples, the parts are understood in volumes, unless otherwise specified; the expression n parts by weight means a weight equal to the weight of n parts (by volume) of water at 4 C.
Example 1: A solution of ethyl polysilicate is prepared by hydrolyzing 50 parts of technical ethyl silicate with 10 parts of water containing 2.3% by weight of hydrochloric acid HCl. This solution, which becomes cloudy when it is prepared, becomes clear on stirring.
To 9.6 parts of this solution are added 5 parts of a 50% (w / v) solution in a mixture of benzene and ethyl acetate of a methylpolysiloxy resin. CH3 / Si ratio (from the number of methyl radiocaux to that of silicon atoms in the molecule) equal to 1.25 and 85.4 parts of methyl alcohol.
With 100 parts of the solution thus prepared, 100 parts by weight of asbestos felt are impregnated and heated for 15 minutes at 100 ° C. in a vacuum oven. The agglomeration is completed by baking under 300 kg / cm2 for 2 hours at 320 ° C. A well bonded, hard and sounding agglomerate is thus obtained.
By varying the proportions of organosilicon resin in the impregnation solution, agglomerates are obtained whose properties are slightly different from those of the agglomerate prepared above. The following table indicates the properties of the various agglomerates thus obtained. The properties of a control agglomerate obtained under the same conditions, with ethyl polysilicate alone, were added to the table for the purposes of comparison.
In the table below, as in those which appear below, it is indicated: in column 1, the percentage of organosilicon resin relative to the weight of asbestos; in column 2, the percentage of polyethyl silicate relative to the weight of asbestos; in column 3, the mechanical properties; in column 4, the value tg 8; in column 5, the resistivity O in ohms. cm; in column 6, the percentage of water absorbed after soaking for 24 hours in water; in column 7, the resistivity O in ohms. cm after soaking for 24 hours in water.

The agglomeration of asbestos by the mixed agglomerating organosilicon resin-ethyl silicate constitutes a very different treatment from that which would consist in agglomerating an asbestos cardboard with ethyl polysilicate by hot pressing treatment. and then treating this agglomerate with an organosilicon resin solution.
Thus, if an asbestos cardboard is agglomerated by soaking in the solution of ethyl polysilicate prepared above, a rigid agglomerate is obtained after passing through the press for 16 hours at 100 ° C. under 300 kg. If we varnish this cardboard with an organosilicon resin solution so that 2.5% resin remains relative to the asbestos, we have, after baking for 2 hours at 200 ° C., an agglomerate whose tg 8 is greater than 0.70,
the dry resistivity of 2.107 ohms. cm, the water absorption after soaking of 30% and the resistivity after soaking less than 6.104 ohms. cm. Such a product is practically unusable as an electrical insulator.

1000 parts of technical ethyl silicate are mixed with 500 parts of methanol and 125 parts of water containing 0.98% by weight of hydrochloric acid.
After 30 minutes of stirring, to 22 parts of the above solution are added 73 parts of benzene and 5 parts of a 50% solution of organosilicon resin substituted by methyl-phenyl radicals. By agglomerating asbestos with such a solution, an agglomerate is obtained in which the silicate / asbestos ratio is equal to 13,
5% and the resin / asbestos ratio at 2.5 0/0.
After 5 minutes of preheating at 100 C under vacuum and 2 hours of cooking at 350 C under a pressure of 300 kg / cm2, an insulating material is obtained whose tg 8 is equal to 0.07 and the resistivity is greater than 1011 ohms. cm.
Example 8: As in the example above, the technical ethyl silicate solution is hydrolyzed and 95 parts of this hydrolyzed solution are added to 4 parts of methanol and 1 part of a solution. at 50% (weight / volume) in the benzene-ethyl acetate mixture of an organosilicon resin substituted by methyl radicals.
After 5 minutes of preheating at 100 ° C., an asbestos felt impregnated with this solution is baked under pressure of 2500 kg / em2 for 2 hours at 3501 ° C.
An insulating material is thus obtained in which the repport of the weight of the resin to that of the asbestos is. of 0.5% and that of the weight of silicate to that of asbestos of only 2.5%. This material is well agglomerated, its tg ô is equal to.
0.25 and its resistivity greater than 1011 ohms. em.
If a material agglomerated with resin alone was to be obtained under the same pressure conditions, it would have to contain at least 2.5% resin relative to asbestos. Example 9: In 90 parts of methanol, 5 parts in v ohzme of a poly ethyl silicate obtained as residue from the rectification of technical ethyl silicate and distilling between 210 and 280 C are dissolved. .
To this solution are added 5 parts of a 50% solution in a benzene ethyl acetate mixture of an organosilicon resin with a CH3 / Si ratio = 1.25.
An asbestos felt is impregnated with the above solution at a rate of 1.00 cm3 of solution per 100 g of felt.
After removing the solvent for 30 minutes at 100 ° C. and baking for 2 hours at 350 ° C., under a pressure of 300 kg per cm 2, a rigid and sound material is obtained, the properties of which are as follows:
