Description

A method of manufacturing a coating for a building element. The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a coating of a construction element, characterized in that a layer of mortar based on cement and hard stone powder is applied to said element, in that a petrifying liquid is applied to said layer of mortar and in that the layers thus formed are compressed and polished, while said layer of mor tier is still plastic, using a heated iron.

We will describe, by way of example, a particular way of applying the method which is the subject of the invention.

On a building element, formed for example of cement and sand, one begins by applying a layer of mortar based on cement and hard stone powder, for example quartz or marble. This layer is applied once or twice, its thickness preferably being 4 to 5 mm.

This mortar may also contain coloring matters, in a proportion not exceeding 15% of the weight of the mortar.

Once the layer of mortar has been applied, it is smoothed with a trowel. A petrifying liquid is then applied to this layer, using a brush or a gun. This petrifying liquid comprises, for example, an alkali metal oxalate, an oil, a resin and caustic soda. To prepare it, we boil oxalic acid, oil, resin and caustic soda, while stirring and slowly adding water without interrupting the boiling, until we obtain a product with a fluidity similar to that of milk.

Once the liquid has been applied to the layer of mortar, the layers thus formed are compressed and polished, while the layer of mortar is still plastic, using an iron heated to 300-400 C. This iron may be a steel disc 10 to 20 cm in diameter, electrically heated and weighing 2 to 3 kg, and whose surface intended to come into contact with said layers is slightly convex and polished. It is also possible to use a manual iron heated with coal or other fuels.

The contact of this heated iron on said layers produces, by the action of friction and by catalysis of the petrifying liquid, a crystallized film resistant to all weathering as well as to shocks, friction and washing.

The petrifying liquid is also intended to facilitate the sliding of the heated disc. This operation must be carried out on the same day as the application of the layer of mortar and the petrifying liquid, so that the layer of mortar is still plastic and that it yields to the compression of the heated disc. Thanks to this plasticity, a polished and compressed surface is obtained, thus neutralizing all the reactions of the cement.

Colourants can also be added to the petrifying liquid. Other decorations can be obtained by spraying on the layer of mortar which has just been applied mineral particles, for example metallic flakes or vitrified flakes of different colors. These particles, hung on the layer of fresh mortar, are encrusted or embedded in this layer during compression with a heated iron.

The example of application of the method which is the subject of the invention which has just been described makes it possible to obtain a coating having an urn on a hard surface, decorative and polished, such as marble for example, resistant to impacts and to atmospheric agents.

The color of this coating is unalterable and its polish keeps better than that of marble. It can be washed very well with soap water.

This coating is hygienic, because its polished and continuous surface; of a compact material, is not porous and does not retain the crobes.

The application example described can be applied to a building element intended for the construction of a staircase, an entrance hall, a bathroom, a living room, a school, a 'a. hospital, clinic, swimming pool, theater, cinema, facade, for example.

Said building element may consist of a plate which is formed for the decoration of a surface of a building, for example. Such a plate can consist of a relatively large panel, formed for example by a calcareous cement and a suitable aggregate. Once the production of the covering is finished, grooves can be made in this panel, for example by means of a saw, so that the panel can subsequently be divided into separate plates of different shapes and sizes.
