A process for the gasification of solid fuel fines. The gasification of fines from solid fuels, coke, anthracite, coal, lignite, etc., presents great difficulties, because it is necessary to have sufficiently permeable layers and a fairly good contact between the gasification means and the fines. Orr has therefore thought for a very long time to treat these fines, either as such or after prior grinding, by keeping them in suspension in a stream of air for the production of lean gas or in a stream of water vapor and oxygen for the manufacture of gas to water.
Very important achievements of this process were made, but did not give the expected results, because the yield of useful gas was insufficient and the gas entailed too considerable quantities of dust incompletely burned and of which only one knew only. make. For the manufacture of water gas, there was also the drawback of very high oxygen consumption, which made the process uneconomical. Attempts have also been made to make water gas from pulverized solid fuels by stirring them violently in a stream (high speed gas.
The achievements have shown that this principle allows good gasification, but that there is strong entrainment of dust, a fairly high consumption of oxygen, that it is necessary to preheat the gasification means, steam and oxygen, and that it is necessary to use relatively complicated apparatus and, therefore, expensive purchase, maintenance and operation.
The present invention makes it possible to gasify fines maintained in suspension while overcoming the above drawbacks, and this by means of an apparatus of relatively simple and robust construction and consuming, for a given production, reduced quantities of fuel, oxygen and steam; it also allows almost complete elimination of the dust entrained by the gas.
The subject of the invention is a process for the gasification of solid fuel fines, maintained in the dense fluidized state by the gaseous gasification agent, and characterized by the use of a chamber, the gasification zone of which has a cross section. widening from bottom to top, by maintaining in this zone a temperature such that the start of softening of the ashes of the fuel used is reached and by using the sensible heat of the gases leaving the zone from gasification to the heating of the gasification agent entering this zone.
The formation of dust, when gasifying fines from solid fuels in suspension, is due to two phenomena a) the fuel grains introduced into the gasifier have all dimensions from the finest dust to the grains which may have , in some cases several thousand meters. Under these conditions, if the largest grains fall to the bottom of the apparatus, the dust is entrained without having time to be completely gasified; b) even using uniform charcoal grains, these, during gasification, become increasingly lighter and end up being drawn out of the apparatus before being completely burnt.
In addition, some very wet coals, if they are heated suddenly, can be broken by the too rapid evacuation of the water vapor they contain.
This drawback is eliminated by operating in accordance with the invention. Advantageously, a gasifier in the form of a cone or pyramid, placed on the point, is used, giving this cone or this pyramid dimensions such that the gas stream arriving at its lower part is sufficiently rapid to suspend the grains. of the largest fuel, but that at the upper part the gas velocity is sufficiently reduced not to entrain even very fine particles before they are completely gasified. The cone or pyramid can be mounted on an area with vertical walls serving as a release area for entrained dust, then terminated with a cover preventing the heat from the hearth from radiating outwards.
Under these conditions, one can easily reach in the whole gasification zone a temperature such (1100 to 1500) that the cinders of the treated fuel undergo a start of melting. As in the apparatus the agitation of the particles is very intense, there are numerous impacts between particles. If these have already reached a sufficiently advanced stage of gasification to include on their exterior a sufficient quantity of ash which has undergone a start of melting, they will stick to each other, then other particles still agglomerating to them, they will end up forming grains of ash of sufficient size to fall to the bottom of the apparatus, from where it will be easy to extract them by any suitable means.
Experience shows that the fall of the particles, growing slowly, will be slow and allow the carbon, which they could still contain, to be gasified all the time. This progressive agglomeration of the finest ash grains allows the use of relatively high gas velocities (from 0.5 to 5 mlsec) without any entrainment. It should be noted that the walls of the device being colder than the center of it, due to the radiation to the outside, radiation which exists even if the device is, as it should be, carefully insulated. , the ashes will not tend to.
stick on the coating, because, when the particles arrive against it, the ashes will already be solidified; on the other hand, the abrasive action of the particles not yet strongly gasified, will tend to remove what could have stuck on this coating. It is also preferable to make a very refractory coating, compact and of a chemical composition such that ashes do not tend to adhere to it. Bricks based on chromite, carborundum, mullite or any other product suitable for the ash of the coal to be used can be used.
It will moreover be necessary to adjust the temperature in the apparatus by modifying more or less the relative quantities of steam and oxygen introduced, as a function of the starting point of melting of the ashes to avoid any risk of agglomeration on the walls.
If the invention thus makes it possible to eliminate the big drawback of the gasification of fuel fines, which is the formation of abundant dust entrained by the gases before complete gasification, it also eliminates the second drawback of excessively high consumption and that of the in the following manner: in a gasifier, as in any other apparatus treating powders in suspension in a gas stream, the temperature is equal, to within a few degrees, throughout the enclosure, this because of the extremely violent stirring of the particles. Under these conditions, the gas exiting at a high temperature causes a large amount of heat which is lost for the operation.
In gasifiers which process coal in large pieces, in a fixed bed, this heat is, on the other hand, used in large part to heat the incoming coal to the desired temperature. In the process according to the invention, this heat is used not for heating the coal, but for that of the gasification means, air, oxygen and steam, oxygen and carbon dioxide, etc. The simplest way to do this is to provide an exchanger placed directly at the outlet of the gasifier, but any other type of exchanger or regenerator can be used.
The fact that the temperature is equal and high throughout the gasification chamber has moreover advantages which can be important in certain cases: thus the fuel grains being suddenly brought to high temperature, cannot agglomerate, even s 'they are very coking, because they do not smell from the pasty melting stage; as, on the other hand, all the gases which could distill during the heating of the fuel are subjected to a very high temperature, the tars and other complex organic bodies are immediately decomposed into simpler bodies, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and possibly a little methane.
Very young fuels can therefore be used without drawbacks, provided that they are naturally introduced into the appliance with a water content such that it is not impossible to reach the necessary temperature or that the grains do not. do not break into very fine dust due to the too sudden departure of this water. This maximum water content depends on the fuel used and can be determined by simple laboratory tests or by calculations.
Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing schematically shows an apparatus for carrying out the invention.
The fuel in the form of fines 0-5 or even 0 -10 does not need to be pulverized, it suffices, if necessary, to partially dry it. This fuel enters the gasifier by 1 by means of a suitable device which is not shown. The fuel is kept in suspension in the gasifier 2 by means of a gas stream, air for the production of lean gas, oxygen and steam for that of water gas, oxygen and carbon dioxide for that of oxide of carbon, arriving by the pipe 13. The ashes which fall to the bottom of the gasifier are extracted by a member 3 which can be of any suitable type, but must be sealed to prevent the outflow of gas with all the disadvantages that they would entail. .
At the exit of the gasifier, the gases are deflected by a screen 4 intended mainly to prevent external radiation and to maintain as much heat as possible inside the gasifier proper 2. At the exit of the gasifier, the gases pass through a heat exchanger made of refractory materials 5 through which pass one or more pipes 6 through which the gasification means to be heated circulate. These pipes, made of refractory metal, for example steel with a very high chromium content, follow against the current the meanders of the exchanger formed by chisels 7.
The gas velocity being much higher in this exchanger 5 than at the top of the gasifier 2, there should be no dust deposits in the exchanger 5, but it will however be necessary to provide inspection doors for the gasifier 2. inspection, assembly and disassembly of the heat exchange pipes 6. The cooled gas leaving the exchanger through the pipe 8 still passes into a recovery boiler 9 and then goes to use through the pipe 10. The steam necessary for gasification, when gas is produced with water, is partly produced by the boiler 9 and arrives through the piping 11, the oxygen through the piping 12.
It is preferable to mix the gasification means before entering the exchanger, so that this mixture is thus as intimate as possible when entering the gasifier 2. It is moreover quite obvious that we could replace the steam with carbon dioxide to obtain a gas with a very high carbon monoxide content instead of obtaining water gas. Likewise, instead of oxygen, one can use air though. we want to produce lean gas.
The type of heat exchanger shown in fig. 1 naturally requires the use of special refractory metals for pipes. Such metals have been developed by modern technique and it should be remembered, moreover, that they must work, in this particular case, in relatively fgçile conditions, since they are only subjected to extremely mechanical stresses. weak. On the other hand, the gasification means being at a pressure slightly higher than that of gas in water, there is no fear of diffusion of the hydrogen even at high temperature.
If the gasification device 2 is to be maintained between 1100 and 1500, in general cases the gasification means leaving the exchanger may have a temperature of the order of 900 to 1200. Under these conditions, oxygen consumption will be extremely reduced. Thus, using coke fines and a gasifier of suitable dimensions, one should consume: pure carbon less than 0.4 kg, oxygen less than 0.2 Nm3, vapor less than 0.4 kg, for one Nm of gas at the water produced and comprising: 3% carbon dioxide, 64% carbon monoxide, 32% hydrogen and 1% nitrogen.
It is obvious that one could introduce with the means of gasification gas formed mainly of hydrocarbons which would be cracked at the temperatures envisaged and would serve to increase the production of gas to water. Such a procedure would be particularly interesting for using tail gases from manufacturings which, like the synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, give large quantities of gas as by-products. rich in light hydrocarbons. The introduction of these hydrocarbons, previously heated in a particular exchanger by means of a part of the sensible heat of the gas produced, can be done either separately from the gasification means, or at the same time as these, the pre-mixture. lable being done in a suitable burner.
The angle at the top of the cone or pyra mid should not be too large, 20 to 40 being a suitable value. This angle will of course have to be smaller the slower the treatment to which we want or must submit the larger grains. To completely rid the agglomerated ashes of their charcoal, it is possible to introduce a small quantity of air, oxygen, oxygen and steam or oxygen and carbon dioxide at the bottom of the gasifier. The type of heat exchanger in fig. 1 could be replaced by other types of exchangers. A tubular heat exchanger would be suitable and in FIG. 2 provision is made to transfer the heat of the outgoing gas to the entering gasification means by a circulation of refractory balls.
In this figure, the numbers 1, 2 and 3 have the same meaning as in the previous figure. The gases leave the gasifier via the pipe 20 and enter the column 21 filled with refractory balls (alumina, silico-aluminous, refractory metals, etc.). These refractory balls of about 1 cm in diameter come cold from the loading funnel 22 through the pipe 23. The cooled gas at least partially leaves through the pipe 24, the boiler 34 and the fan 26. A manometer 25 placed between pipes 23 and 24 allows manual or automatic adjustment of the gas pressure before entering the boiler, so that there is neither gas outlet nor air inlet through \? 2 and 23.
The hot balls fall, by the terie pipe 27, which can. include an auxiliary heating not shown here, in the column 28 where they are cooled by the gasification means entering and passing into the gasoline gene through the pipe 19. The length of the pipe 2 7 is sufficient so that there is no has no passage of the gasification means in the gas produced by said piping. The balls, extracted from 28 by the member 31, are raised at 22 by a suitable device 32. For start-up, the gasifier is provided with a chimney 33.
With the arrangements of the apparatus provided above, it is possible to manufacture lean gas using, as means of gasification, air more or less loaded with steam, gas in water with steam and oxygen, carbon monoxide with carbon dioxide and oxygen.
