Apparatus for detecting the presence of an object in a space.
The present invention relates to an apparatus for detecting the presence of an object in a space.
A very important field of application of such devices is the protection against theft and especially the indication of burglaries. So far, however, no apparatus of practical use has been realized. This is due to the lack of stability of the devices. In alarm or guard devices which have to function from day to day without care in an absolutely safe manner, it is essential that they be stable, that is to say practically independent of variations in temperature or temperature. network.
The apparatus according to the invention comprises an antenna connected to a high frequency generator supplied by the network, this generator itself being connected to an indicating device, so that the changes in capacitance between the antenna and the earth caused by objects to be detected cause a variation in the speed of the generator and hence the actuation of the indicating device.
This apparatus is characterized in that high frequency decoupling means are provided between the generator and the network and in that means are provided to make the indication provided by the indicating device independent of normal temperature changes, all in order to allow greater sensitivity of the device.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
The apparatus comprises an electronic generator consisting of an electron tube E and an LC oscillator circuit with a three-point connection of known type.
The antenna A is connected to the grid circuit of the tube by the capacitor C1 and the resistor R1. In the plate circuit of the tube, an R relay, adjustable in its limit position, is connected to function as an indicating device. The apparatus is supplied by an alternating network V, by the transformer T ', a rectifier L and a filter capacitor C4.
The given diagram of the apparatus is in principle known, it works so that when an increase in the capacitance of the C3 antenna occurs, for example when an object enters the field of the antenna, the high voltage frequency between the grid and the cathode of the tube is shunted so that, thanks to the high resistance R1, a decrease in the high frequency amplitude occurs. As a result, the anode current through the tube is decreased so that the relay, which has an adjustable limit position, operates. If the relay is adjusted to the middle position, it naturally works for a decrease in the anode current, i.e. a decrease of 03.
As will be explained in greater detail in the following, the coupling elements connected to the circuit C ', as well as the circuit itself, must be arranged in a special way if the apparatus is to be stable.
The grid side will be considered first.
A good instrument will give an indication of a change of 0.1 pF or less in C83, preferably 0.01 pF. It should follow from the diagram that if the capacitance between the grid of the tube and the cathode or the grid and the anode varies, there will be almost the same change in current in the anode circuit of the tube as if a change of capacitance occurred between the antenna and the earth. For normal temperature variations (20 C), such a variation in capacitance is normal in electron tubes. Therefore, the electron tube must be specially constructed for the intended application.
A first precaution to take is to build the tubes with the least possible capacity between the grid and the anode and the grid and the cathode. This is achieved by, among other things, the direct exit through the tube wall of the grid terminal with the shortest possible connections.
These should not be parallel to the connections of the other electrodes. In addition, the electrodes in the tube should be secured by a material having a small coefficient of thermal expansion such as, for example, soapstone or the like. The variation in the capacitance of the tube between the control grid, on the one hand, and the anode and cathode, on the other hand, should be less than 0.1 pF for normal variations in tube temperature. The connection between the grid and the antenna as well as the arrangement of the antenna must be such that a stable capacitance is produced in the grid side of the circuit which will not be variable for changes in temperature.
The variation of the capacitance between the antenna and the earth produced by the insulating elements of the antenna must be less than 0.1 pF for a variation of 20 "C. A compensation device can also be used. For changes in temperature, there should be such changes in capacitance that changes in capacitance in other elements connected to the grid circuit are compensated for.
Such a compensation device can be produced, for example, by means of a capacitor C1 which. in the usual way, is constructed so that. its capacity varies with temperature, so as to compensate for the variations due to other elements, or by giving the relay: li nn opposite enronlemezit, connected in series with a resistance depending on the temperature, this opposite winding being thus supplied by the rectifier.
The insulating material has a dielectric constant which rises with an increase in temperature, while the capacitance of the capacitor C1 decreases with an increase in temperature, the value of the aforesaid resistance also decreasing with an increase in temperature.
Regarding the earth side of the circuit. it is necessary that the impedance Z1 for coupling the generator to earth, for example a capacitor, has a small impedance.
Since the distance between the earth 72 of the apparatus and the earth 71 of the antenna can usually be short, a suitably small and stable impedance can also be obtained for this connection. On the other hand, the impedance between the earth side of the circuit and the network must be large for high frequencies This is due to the fact that the impedance of the network to earth I3 can vary considerably, and therefore the resulting influence what does the network earth exert on Zl by J? 3 may vary, which in turn influences circuit 7. C and causes erroneous indications. In that case.
J? 3 partly comprises the impedance of the device and partly the impedance of the network to earth. The way in which the network impedance can be changed can be clearly understood from the figure. It is assumed that the connections of the network have a certain length, this is the case, for example, with overhead pipelines, so that the impedance Z3 can be arranged in series with these connections. If therefore a load-S3, of relatively high capacitance C2, is connected to the earth, the impedance is naturally reduced between the network side of the device and the earth, which means that
Z1 is more bypassed.
When the device is connected to the network through a transformer having electrically separate primary and secondary windings, or even a screen connected to earth between the windings, a fairly high impedance is produced between the two windings. In the case of alternating current or direct current devices, a suitable impedance must be connected between the device and the network. This can be of the antiparasitic type. In order to obtain a sufficiently high impedance, it is necessary to connect several interference filters to it, possibly with their capacitors.
What has been said above will be better understood by an example of an AC device. Suppose that C3 is 50 pF.
The sensitivity of the device, that is, the variation of C3 under the influence of the relay, is 0.01 pF or 2.10: 4 of C3. Z1 is a 5000 pF capacitor. The example demonstrates that the same variation in the circuit as under the influence of the relay (0.01 pF) can be obtained if Z1 varies by approximately 0.75 mF and a variation of the impedance Z2 between, for example, infinity and 50,000 ohms can also cause this variation in Z1. It follows therefore that a filter of high efficiency should be connected between the network side of the device and the network, and that Z1 should be chosen as low as possible.
The usual value of Z1 (C = 5000 pF) is generally too small and should be increased at least ten times.
By connecting the transformer between the apparatus and the network, in known manner, an electrical separation of the apparatus and the network is obtained. For this reason, the LC circuit can be connected directly to the earth pipe J2, which in turn, by means of a low impedance pipe, is extended to the earth J1 of the antenna, whereby a connection is obtained between the earths J2 and J1 with a sufficiently low resistance so that the capacitance C5 of the transformer T, which must be able to be maintained at about 100 pF, constitutes sufficient decoupling between the network and the device. In any circumstance, the impedance between the earth side of the circuit and the network must be 100 times greater than the impedance between the same side of the circuit and earth.
