Description

Exemple <I>III: '</I> Sur les dessins ci-joints, les fig.

  En réglant les températures comme indi  qué ci-dessus et sous un vide de 0,03 mm, on  obtient en une seule distillation de l'alumi  nium     commerical    dans le récipient collecteur  du métal condensé en c2.    Dans les intervalles de température dans  lesquels on réalise     habituellement    le procédé,       1200-1500     C, la tension clé vapeur du sili  cium     pur    est très inférieure à. celle de l'alumi  nium pur;

Process for producing at least 99% aluminum. by direct distillation of aluminum alloyed with other metals and furnace for the implementation of this process. An industrially manufactures aluminum by electrolysis of alumina dissolved in the molten ervolite.

Most of the metals contained as impurities in the raw materials or in the solvent and the electrodes are separated out. the cathode before the aluminum and come to soil it; in order to obtain aluminum of commercial grade, it is essential to use only extremely pure products, therefore very expensive. In particular,

the purification of bauxite in order to obtain pure alumina can only be carried out in large installations requiring considerable capital investment. It would therefore be very useful to have a process which would avoid these constraints and would enable commercial aluminum to be obtained from the ore without first having to chemically treat the latter.

Now, minerals (aluminum, in particular bauxites and lekaolin, contain silicon and iron as essential impurities, and their thermal reduction makes it possible to obtain alloys whose aluminum content rarely reaches 70, the remainder being. practically iron and silicon with a little titanium and various impurities in small quantities.

It has already been proposed to manufacture aluminum by direct distillation of alloys or waste of this metal at a high temperature and under a high vacuum: until now, this process had not succeeded, because encountered several difficulties.

It was impossible to separate the silicon and iron from the aluminum completely enough to be able to obtain a commercial aluminum, that is to say. minimum titer of 99 / o.

In addition, the distilled aluminum gathered at. the state. extremely divided (globules or cries rate), most often intimately mixed with oxides.

Finally, the materials used, graphite or metal oxides, were quickly put out of use by liquid aluminum.

The present invention relates to a. process for the production of at least 990/0 aluminum by direct distillation of alloys or waste containing them.

This process is characterized in that the distillation is carried out under temperature and pressure conditions such that, by carrying on a system of axes the pressure used on the abscissa and the corresponding temperature on the ordinate, a point is obtained. located above the curve passing through the following points

<tb> 1 <SEP> <SEP> <SEP> <SEP> <SEP> 1450 <SEP> C. In this vacuum interval, pure silicon only appreciably distils 100 to 150 degrees above the. pure aluminum distillation temperature.

For iron, the difference is even greater.

Aluminum is obtained which is all the purer as the distillation temperature is lower.

The invention also relates to an oven for carrying out this process. This oven is characterized in that it is internally lined with resistant materials. to the action of aluminum.

It has been found, in fact, that by operating. at a temperature of around 1100 C and under vacuum less than 200 microns, liquid aluminum attacks the oxides with which it is in contact, alumina, glncine, ete., and reduces them by forming oxides and sub-oxides volatiles of aluminum which, passing from the distillation temperature to the condensation temperature, give back oxides and give up ahuninium in the highly targeted state.

On the other hand, other materials, for example carbides such as silicon carbide, CSi, very pure, aluminum carbide and aluminum nitrides, in practice are sufficiently resistant to the action of aluminum. liquid at high temperatures and high vacuums so that they can be used to coat the furnace.

In contact with liquid aluminitun, the silicon carbide gradually changes. little aluminum carbide. The silicon released in this way then runs the risk of contaminating the condensate. It is therefore preferable to use aluminum carbide from the start if it can be prepared sufficiently pure. Alniiiiiiium carbide is suitable as a coating provided it is kept away from humidity; aluminum nitride perfectly resists the action of liquid aluminum under high vacuum and. up to 1500 C.

It was also found that aluminum in the state. vapor does not appear to attack the compact graphite significantly; it is therefore possible to use this material for the oven enclosure and as a heating resistor. All the rest of the device that can be in contact with the liquid aluminum is. made with the materials (carbides, nitrides) indicated above.

In a particular implementation of the process according to the invention, the silicon and the ter are separated almost completely from the aluminum by a series of distillations including. each one takes up the condensate of the previous operation.

For alloys containing more than 20% silicon, three distillations are generally necessary, but the first of these distillations can be avoided by a simple segregation of the alloy,

which makes it possible to obtain a euteetics at. about 13% silicon. It is this latter alloy which is then distilled once or generally twice.

Silicon and aluminum do not form a defined compound between them and the distillation of an aluminum-silicon alloy takes place under practically the same conditions as the distillation (pure aluminum.

On the other hand, iron forms with aluminum or with aluminum and silicon defined compounds and we could. fear that these combinations would not be dissociated under the temperature and vacuum conditions used, which would not have made it possible to separate aluminum in good yield from alloys containing more than 6% iron. Gold,

This is not the case, as shown in Example 2 below.

temperature chosen, the combinations of iron with aluminum are practically completely dissociated and the liquid metal behaves on distillation as a simple mixture.

In practice, when it is desired to distill alloys containing Fe Al or Fe Si Al combinations, it is preferable to operate at a temperature above 1400 C; below this temperature, the distillation of the aluminum is too slow.

By comparing with Example I, it can be seen that for an almost identical silicon content in the starting metal, condensed metal which is poorer in silicon is obtained in a single distillation in Example II: 0.52 to 0 , 82 versus 2.8%. It seems that the iron is holding back. partly the silicon in the state. combination of iron and silicon and prevents it from. distill.

A second distillation allows. to obtain 99.5% aluminum.

Instead of proceeding discontinuously by successive distillations, it is also possible to separate the aluminum from the silicon, the iron and the titanium by continuous reflux distillation. Example <I> III: '</I> In the accompanying drawings, figs. 1 and <B> 9 - </B> represent, by way of example, a distillation furnace at. reflux that allows. to obtain a purer metal and with a better yield:

fig. 1 is an axial longitudinal sectional view thereof, and FIG. 2 a sectional view of soot alit line 2-2 of FIG. 1.

The elongated crucible c, containing the liquid metal, is carborundum or aluminum nitride, it is. tilted to the horizontal.

In the lower end part of the crucible. East. provided in a container C1, containing the liquid alloy, for example a 13% silicon eutectic obtained by silico-aluminum segregation, as indicated above. At the top end part of the crucible is a receptacle, c'2, intended to collect the condensed aluminum.

The crucible is closed at its upper part by a cover b1, made of aluminum nitride, surrounded by a heating jacket a, constituted, for example, by a conical resistance at. graphite; a second, heated cover b2, interposed between this heating surface and the first cover b1, makes it possible to obtain a lower temperature, decreasing regularly between the receptacle c1, where a temperature of 1470 C prevails, and the container c '',

where there is a temperature of 1210 to 123011C.

The position of this heat-insulating cover b- 'is. adjustable.

A cooler d is. placed outside the crucible c and near this receptacle c <B> l </B>, inside the casing a. r at the highest part of the crucible, a small opening is. provided against the cover b1 to enable the inert gases to be extracted by vacuum.

The receptacle c2, the condensed aluminum collector, is closed at its upper part by a slab c3, in carborundum or aluminum nitride, comprising an orifice c4.

The crucible c is heated by the conical envelope, in graphite, cc, forming an electric heating resistance, with current feeds at its ends, in al.

The operation of the oven is. the following After evacuation, the alloy to be distilled before reaches the boiling point 1.-170 <B> C </B>, the metallic vapors fill the free space under the cover b1 and come. condense on the inner wall of the crucible in front of the cooler d.

The condensed metal trickles onto the slab c3, which covers <B> the </B> collecting vessel c2, only part of which enters this vessel c2 through the orifice cl; the remainder returns to the rear, flowing over the inclined upper face c5 of the crucible, forming a reflux ramp, the course of which has been lengthened as much as possible by ribs or ribs c6 baffles. During this reflux, the liquid metal is. in touch. with the metallic vapors, which go in the opposite direction, and a true fractional distillation takes place, the vapor phase becoming enriched in more volatile metal (aluminum), while the refluxing liquid is enriched in less volatiles (silicon, iron, titanium).

  By adjusting the temperatures as indicated above and under a vacuum of 0.03 mm, commercial aluminum is obtained in a single distillation in the collecting vessel of the metal condensed in c2. In the temperature ranges in which the process is usually carried out, 1200-1500 C, the vapor pressure of pure silicon is much lower than. that of pure aluminum;

it follows that under a given vicis, the silicon condenses at a key temperature 100; i <B> 1500 </B> C higher than that at which the aliiniiniuni is degraded. For ter and titanium, the difference is even greater. This is taken advantage of in one embodiment of the process according to the invention, by separating the silicon from iron and titanium from aluminum by fractional condensation.

For this purpose, a condenser made up of two parts can be used, one of which is cooler than the other, silicon, iron and titanium are then concentrated on the hottest part of the condenser and the other. aluminum on the coldest part.

It is also possible. to create sz-stematically in the distillation furnace zones to. different temperatures, as shown in Example IV.

Figs. 3 and 4 represent, to. by way of example, an oven using this principle; fig. 3 is a view in axial longitudinal section and FIG. 4 a cross-sectional view along the line -1 --- 4 of FIG. 3.

The furnace chamber denies that the casing thereof has a truncated conical shape with the cross section extending. increasing from right to -auehe (fif @. 3).

In the bottom of the oven are three bottom sins <I> h, i, </I> j; the first, h, starting from the right, receives, through the duct. g1, The alloy to be purified, for example an aluminum alloy with 13% silicon. The opposite transvemle wall, g2, close to the third basin j, is cooled by a circulation of water,

in g3. 1-n channel g4, spared at. through this cold wall, connects the furnace chamber to the vacuum production key apparatus (not shown); a wall its cg5 forming a baffle protects the orifice of this channel .du side of the oven chamber. We laugh -) - the cooling of this wall g2 of the furnace so that the latter is at a temperature lower than that of the triple point of the metal <B> (</B> 600 C for example.). Resistors h are placed in the upper part of this chamber of the furnace.

A partition 1 separates the basins <I> h, i, </I> j, this upper heating zone of the furnace, while protecting the resistors against metal projections. These resistors k and the levels of the basins h., I, j gradually and regularly deviate. the lon- = itudinal axis of the oven, which makes it possible to precisely adjust the temperature in each of the basins; the temperatures of these basins, decreasing from right to left, are.

determined by the preasion prevailing in the chi oven chamber.

The first basin h., Containing the alloy: ï. to purify, is, for a pressure of the chamber of the lathe, of the order of 0.1 niai of mercury, p .-) rté i a temperature of approximately 1.1i0 C¯.

The metal,; it has eomniencé to evaporate a little,; azit this tenipéïatnre, is entrained towards the cold wall g 'of the furnace under the effect of the pressure difference between the enclosure of this lower sin ix. and the vicinity of the cold wall g '. It can be seen that metal is deposited in the liquid state on the threshold hl, separating this basin h and the following basin i; this threshold hl is at a temperature of 1380 <B> C </B> for example.

The liquid metal thus deposited climbs on this threshold hl and pours (as indicated by the arrow) into the basin i. The content of this metal in Si is less than 3%, as long as the distillation has remained less than 90% of the content of the basin h.

The metal collected in the basin i is partially stabilized; its temperature being set at 1350 "C, it still distills, but less quickly than in basin h, although basin i is closer to the cold wall g2, which exerts an accelerating effect on distillation. The metal climbs upwards. on the threshold it separates basins i and., j, according to the same phenomenon as in basin h; it flows into basin j, where its Si content falls below 10/0.

The temperature of this basin j, forming a collecting vessel for the purified aluminum, is raised to approximately 100 ° C., at which temperature the vapor pressure of the aluminum is very low. The metal i- is stabilized in the liquid state for the. pressure in the oven chamber. The cold wall.g2 of the lathe is covered (in g6) with solid metal, which liquefies and trickles as soon as the temperature at the surface reaches that of the point. triple.

The continuous reflux distillation process can be applied also to the separation of aluminum from silicon and ter using a known type of plate distillation column in which all parts contact. liquid aluminum., have aluminum nitride.

One can use a simple cylinder filled with Raschig rings or even just raw pieces of aluminum nitride.

The process: according to the invention is applicable to obtaining refined aluminum to more than 99.91 / o. from commercial aluminum or fairly pure scrap aluminum alloys, in a single distillation.
