Description

Fig. <B>5</B> zeigt eine Variante zu Fig. <B>1.</B> C> Fig. <B>6</B> zeigt die Wirkung der Bildbe grenzung und Fig. <B>7</B> zeigt die Blende zur Bildbegrenzung. Fig. <B>8</B> zeigt die Wirkung der Blende.

Device for displaying a television picture with a cathode ray tube and an external light source. There are devices for reproducing a television image with a separate light source and an extensive control layer are known in which the control slide is in a streak optic order, which consists of a system of columns and bars and which by a cathode ray the television image accordingly is deformed in its surface and it was proposed to apply the control layer on a hollow mirror.

The application of the control layer on a concave mirror proposed by Swiss Patent No. 268713 is intended, among other things, to ensure a sufficiently high contrast of the television images by avoiding any other means for imaging purposes Lenses or glass plates required within the schlieren optical system. As stated in the patent mentioned, a thin layer of a viscous liquid or an elastic body with high internal friction is used to control the surface of the body by means of electrical charges applied by a cathode beam, i.e. through electrostatic forces, corresponding to the television picture is deformed.

As is also stated in the cited patent, the control effect of the layer is based on a diffraction effect, the control layer itself acting as a diffraction grating, specifically as an absorption-free, so-called transit time or phase grating. Such a device with Schlieren optics and concave mirror to achieve the diffraction effect is by no means tied to the use of a control layer with a deformable surface, i.e. to the use of a control layer in which the runtime effect of the phase grating is achieved by changing the thickness of the control layer.

The present invention relates to a device for reproducing a television image with a separate light source and an extensive control layer, which is located in a schlieren optical arrangement, and is characterized in that the effective optical when the light passes through the control layer Path length is changed locally by an energy radiation modulated according to your television picture, at least by changing the refractive index and that the control layer is applied to a concave mirror.

Exemplary embodiments of the invention will now be explained in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, FIG. 1 explaining the principle of the light control, while FIGS. -), 3 and 4 a Represent embodiment of the invention. Fig. 5 shows a variant of Fig. 1. C> Fig. 6 shows the effect of the image delimitation and Fig. 7 </B> shows the aperture to limit the image. Fig. 8 shows the effect of the diaphragm.

The optical path length which is effective for the control effect when light passes through the control layer depends on the factors of layer thickness and refractive index at the individual points of the control layer. In order to change this optically effective path length locally, instead of the layer thickness, the refractive index of the layer material can also be changed in accordance with the television picture. Variable index control materials are known. They mostly consist of crystals or crystalline bodies, the refractive index of which is essentially influenced by the electron density.

This can be changed by introducing or shooting in electrons or by a different type of irradiation of energy. In many cases, the layer thickness (surface deformation) and the refractive index change at the same time. Instead of a cathode ray, the use of modulated, for example electromagnetic radiation (ultraviolet light, infrared radiation, etc.) is also possible for certain control layers.

FIG. 1 serves to explain the principle of licit control using a control layer, the refractive index of which is locally changed. In order to initially simplify the explanation of the principle of light control, a streak optical system is shown in FIG. 1, in which lens optics are used instead of a concave mirror.

The star layer <B> 1 </B> lies directly in front of an imaging system 2 of the circlet optics. A gap <B> 3 </B> is illuminated from below in the direction of arrow P and formed by the imaging system 2 in level 4. As long as the control layer <B> 1 </B> is homo <B> gene </B> and isotropic, that is, as long as the refractive index and the layer thickness are of the same size over the entire control layer, level 4 is created at point 4a the so-called image of the zeroth order.

At this point 4a a bar 7 is arranged, which prevents the light from passing upwards. A lens, which images the control layer on the projection screen, is usually attached above the bar 7. For the sake of clarity, the lens and projection screen have been omitted from the drawing, since they are not essential for light control. The bar <B> 7 </B> is, as described in patent no. <B> 2268713 </B>, made wider than the image of the zeroth order, and these widenings are <B> 8 </ B > Preferably at least 10 "/, the width of the zeroth order image on each side.

If, as indicated by the hatching of the control layer <B> 1 </B> in the drawing, the refractive index of the control layer is periodically changed over the extent of the layer, the optical layer that is effective when the light passes through the control layer changes Path length at the individual points, as this is known to be the product of the layer thickness and the refractive index. As a result of the different long path lengths, the transit time of the light within the layer is different at individual points, so that the wave fronts no longer exit the layer at the same time at the different points.

The control layer with locally periodically changed refractive index thus acts as a transit time or phase grating or grid. With a correspondingly fine division of the raster next to the zero order image, for example at points <B> 5 </B> and <B> 6, so-called secondary images of higher order are created in plane 4a. The distance between the higher order image and the zero order image is solely dependent on the size of the period t of the local change in the refractive index in relation to the wavelength of the light.

The local period t or the division of the raster is preferably selected so that the distance of the secondary image of the first order from the image of the zero order is of the order of magnitude of the bar dimension. The magnitude of the luminous flux assigned to these secondary images, which is decisive for the light control, is, among other things, a function of the amplitude of these periodic changes in the refractive index. The greater the difference between maxima and minima of the refractive index in the layer, the more light hits the higher-order images and thus reaches the projection screen.

Instead of the individual gap and individual bars shown in the drawing, several of them can preferably be used in an equidistant arrangement. Other types of bodies can also be used in place of the bars. It is essential here that the streak-optical arrangement consists of the concave mirror and the bodies arranged approximately in its center, the bodies being arranged and designed in such a way that the passage of light onto the projection wall is prevented with an unchanged control layer.

It is possible to use a control layer in which the refractive index is changed and the surface is deformed at the same time. This will mostly be the case even if the surface deformation of the control layer is caused by the application of electrons. Depending on their speed, the electrons penetrate the layer to a certain depth, whereby the refractive index of the layer material is locally changed within the penetration depth.

It is also possible to use birefringent materials in which the index of refraction that is decisive for the ordinary or extraordinary beam can be changed. In order to compensate for any non-linearity of the optical control, the electrical television signal can be corrected accordingly. The control layer described above is now placed on a concave mirror surface in accordance with patent no. <B> 268713 </B>; An embodiment of such an arrangement is shown in Fig. 2, which shows the essential parts of the apparatus with one of the type concave mirror for example when using a viscous liquid as a control medium.

The crater <B> 9 </B> of an arc lamp <B> 10 </B> is imaged in a field lens 12 by means of a mirror <B> 11 </B>. A lens <B> 13 </B> ensures the imaging of the field lens 12 via a mirror system 14 on the control layer <B> 15. </B> Thus, an image of the crater is located in the layer <B> 15 </B> <B> 9 </B> of the arc lamp, also in the field lens 12, in which a rectangular aperture <B> 16 </B> defines the contour of the image. In this level <B> 16 </B> filters, for example color filters when reproducing color television pictures, can be arranged.

The mirror system 14 consists of mirror strips, as shown in FIG. These mirror strips act exactly like the column <B> 3 </B> and bars <B> 7 </B> of FIG. <B> 1. </B> The mirror strips are spatially arranged in such a way that the row direction stands perpendicular to them.

The control layer <B> 15 </B> is now arranged on a concave mirror <B> 17 </B>, the center of curvature <B> 18 </B> of which lies in the plane of the mirror system 14. The concave mirror <B> 17 </B> acts exactly like the optical system 2 of FIG. <B> 1; </B> as a result, the mirror system 14 is imaged in itself.

In FIG. 3, the hatched areas denote reflective surfaces 19, which are provided with black edges 20, which correspond to the widened areas <B> 8 </B> of the bars <B > 7 </B>, the effect of which was explained above for FIG. <B> 1 </B>. The case with four mirrors is shown in FIGS. 3 and 4; however, a different number of mirrors can be used. The light falling through the mirror system 14, which is lost for the control, is absorbed by a deep black surface at 21.

About 500% of the total light from the arc lamp thus falls on the concave mirror 17. This light penetrates the control layer 15 and is reflected by the concave mirror the control layer penetrates again and, in the case of a black image, that is to say unchanged control layer, returns to the mirror 14 and finally back into the crater <B> 9. </B>

If, as a result of the finely spaced local change, strong diffraction occurs at the control layer <B> 15, which acts as a phase grating, </B> light as a result of the secondary images falls through the mirror system upwards into a projection lens 22 which controls the control layer 15 </B> exactly on the projection screen <B> 23 </B>.

A cathode beam, which is generated by electron optics 24 and sweeps over the control layer <B> 15 </B> in the image and line directions by deflection elements <B> 25 </B>, is ver by means of deflection plates <B> 26 </ B> according to the television signal, which is modulated onto a high-frequency carrier, ge controls. The deflections of the plate pair <B> 26 </B> take place in the row direction.

The electron flow of the cathode beam is passed through the electrically conductive control layer <B> 15 </B> onto the mirror <B> 17 </B>, which must therefore be electrically conductive on the surface.

The storage of the concave mirror is achieved in that three rollers 27 are arranged in a stationary manner, evenly distributed over the circumference, against which the concave mirror 17 is held by means of a spring 28 </B> is pressed. In this way it is achieved that the center of curvature of the mirror always lies at the same point, regardless of the lateral movements of the mirror <B> 17. </B> A squeegee <B> 29 </B> continuously smooths out the liquid layer <B> 15 </B> to the correct layer thickness.

The concave mirror <B> 17 </B> is rotated by means of a gear <B> 30 </B> and a motor <B> 31 </B> about an inclined axis <B> 32 </B>, which through the center of curvature <B> 18 </B> of the Ilohl mirror <B> 17 </B> goes. The concave mirror 17, which is expediently made of metal and thus has good thermal conductivity, serves to dissipate the heat output absorbed in the mirror and in the control layer. This is finally carried away by a cooling system 33 in a shell 34 designed as a liquid store. This continuous cooling made light an extremely slow movement of the concave mirror in contrast to the corresponding movement in the known arrangements.

In this way, the harmful interference phenomena mentioned above can be avoided in the raster generation on the control layer. The maximum speed in the image area should be so small that the local displacement of the control layer in one image period is less than a tenth of the local period of the refractive index changes.

All parts connected to the viscous liquid 15 and the cathode ray system 24 and the mirror system 14 are located in a highly vacuum-tight container 35 which is pumped out by a high vacuum. In this way, there is not a single glass surface in the streak optical part between the concave mirror 17 and the mirror system 14, which could impair the contrast of the image.

The arrangement also has the great advantage that the arc lamp can be arranged at a convenient location for operation and that a spatially small construction can be selected for the entire facility. The achievable image contrast is the best possible and is determined exclusively by the quality of the mirror <B> 17 </B> and by the blackening of the widenings <B> 8 </B> in FIGS. 4 and <B> 5 </B> conditionally.

The permanent cooling of the control layer allows it. to select the speed of the rotary movement of the concave mirror <B> 17 </B> so low that any disruptive phenomenon caused by the rotation is reliably avoided. The cycle times are practically on the order of an hour.

The luminous fluxes that can be achieved with this device are practically unlimited and are determined solely by the size of the arc lamp. The concave mirror surface can be made of a very hard metal, for example rhodium, so there is no risk of damage from dust particles, etc. In this way, the great difficulties that have arisen with today's arrangements with transparent metal electrodes are avoided. As mentioned above, the light penetrates the control layer twice in total.

By suitably dimensioning the control layer thickness, the great benefit can be drawn that approximately twice the effect is achieved compared to the simple passage of light. To achieve this, the layer thickness is selected to be so small that the points of intersection of the incident and reflected light beam with the surface are at a distance that is very small compared to the local period of the changes in the refractive index.

In practical optical arrangements, this is ensured if the layer thickness is chosen to be smaller than the local period of the changes in the refractive index. The double optical use of the control layer has the consequence that it is possible to work with lower cathode ray currents, which leads to a desired reduction in the stress on the control layer and thus to a significant increase in the service life of the same.

If a solid body is used as the control medium, the refractive index of which <B> - </B> can be changed as it <B> - </B>, the concave mirror <B> 17 </B> is replaced by a smaller one, whose axis coincides with the vertical axis through point <B> 18 </B>. Movement of the control layer is not required. Otherwise the arrangement remains essentially the same as in FIG. 2.

If continuous operation is to be guaranteed, two arc lamps can be used, which can be used optionally. It is also possible to work with devices that are constantly on, for example high-pressure mercury lamps. A related example is shown in FIG. 5. The field lens 12 can be seen therein again.

The concave mirror 11 of the arc lamp (FIG. 2) is here replaced by a system of high-pressure mercury lamps 36, which are arranged so that their image, which the lens 12 provides , on which mirror <B> 19 </B> (Fig. <B> 3 </B> and 4) comes to rest.

With regard to the arrangement of an image field diaphragm <B> 37 </B>, reference is made to FIGS. <B> 6 </B> to <B> 8 </B>. In Fig. 6, the disturbances of the dark field are shown, which are caused by the delimitation of the image. In the case of a black image, it is known that the cathode ray sweeps the surface of the control layer <B> 15 </B> at constant speed and constant intensity. The surface is electrically charged more or less evenly. This creates a superficial print over the entire painted image area (with the rectangular border <B> 38) </B>, which is able to reduce the layer thickness somewhat.

This necessarily results in deformations of the surface at the border <B> 38 </B>. As shown in FIG. 6, disruptive circular deformations <B> 39, </B> 40, 41, 42 occur during the slow movement of the carrier of the control layer <B> 15. </ B > These disruptive deformations are visible as strong brightening on the projection screen.

There is now a screen <B> 37 </B> (Fig. 2 and <B> 7) </B> arranged directly above the control layer <B> 15 </B>, which has at least one rounded corner 43 and the annoying brightening 41 prevents. The cover <B> 37 </B> also has the great advantage that, with a suitable arrangement, fluctuations in position of the coated area with the border <B> 38 </B> cannot have any harmful effect. Such positional fluctuations are caused by voltage fluctuations on the cathode ray tube.

For this purpose, the diaphragm <B> 37 </B>, as indicated in FIG. 7, is arranged in such a way that through it the area covered by the cathode beam with the border <B> 38 </ B > is cut along the two dashed lines. The disruptive deformation 40 still remains, which is eliminated by a suitable inclined position of the diaphragm <B> 37, </B> with respect to the direction of movement 45 of the control layer <B> 15, </B> (FIG. 8 ). </B> With this arrangement, only the lightenings 44 arise, which are harmless because they fall outside the image.
