Description

Process of impregnating dry wood in a cIos vase, with a view to their protection against attacks by cryptogams and insects. The present invention relates to a process for protecting wood against attack by wood-eating cryptogams and insects by impregnating them, in the dry state, in a closed vessel, with alkaline solutions of polychlorophenols.

This process is characterized in that, for this impregnation, use is made of alkaline solutions of polychlorophenols prepared from natural water, said solutions also containing alkali metal salts of acids derived from phosphorus.

These salts can be orthophosphates,: nétaphosphates or polymetaphosphates. Their presence in the impregnation solutions delays the precipitation of polyehlorophenates by the alkaline earth salts which the plias often contain in the natural waters used on the impregnation sites to dissolve the polychlorophenates alkaline. It thus greatly promotes the penetration of preservative solutions into the wood.

In an earlier patent, the patentees described a process for impregnation. sapwood, according to the Bou cherie technique, by two solutions of alkali polychlorophenates added with the aforementioned salts. But we couldn't. provide that it would also be possible to use such solutions for the impregnation of dry wood in a closed vessel. Indeed. they are two entirely different techniques.

In the Butchery process, there is a circulation of a slightly concentrated liquor in the wood which gradually absorbs the chlorophenols. In impregnation in a closed vessel (Rüping and Béthell processes), the solution only penetrates under the influence of pressure.

The solutions employed for the present impregnation in a closed vessel may contain from 0.5 to 101% of alkali salts of polychlorophenols. Poly-chlorophenates containing 2 to 4 chlorine atoms in their molecule are preferably used, but pentachlorophenates can also be used.

In order to control the penetration of the product, the fungicidal solutions can be colored with dyes chosen so that they penetrate into the wood at the same speed as the polychlorophenates, for example naphthalene blue, sulpho green I, soluble blue g, indigotin N, vegetable green, etc.

Chlorophenols undergo a real fixation in the wood, ensuring good resistance to the action of time and (atmospheric factors.

The following examples illustrate the in @ = en- tion.

Example 1: We impregnate in a closed vessel, according to the Bethell technique, railway sleepers, made of oak, at a temperature of 50 to 60 C, with aqueous solutions obtained by dissolving at a dose of 6% of a mixture containing 5% phosphate <RTI

ID = "0002.0015"> trisodium and 95% sodium trichlorophenate in hard water assaying 20 hydro. French.

The average impregnation rates under these conditions are of the order of 100 kg / m 3.

The minimum chlorophenol content detected in the sapwood is at least 1010.

The fungicidal protection controlled in the laboratory is excellent, even after prolonged action of rainwater.

Example 2: Are cold impregnated, according to the Bethall technique, pine posts with an aqueous solution containing 5% of potassium tetrachlorophenate, 0.2% of sodium trimetaphosphate and 0,

  016% naphthol green.

The fungicidal protection, controlled in the laboratory, is excellent.

Example 3: Pine posts are cold impregnated by the Bethell process with an aqueous solution containing 2% of sodium pentachlorophenate, 0.4% of trisoc-ic phosphate and 0.0161 / o naphthol green.

The fungicidal protection obtained is very good even after washing out.
