Automatic gear change device for light vehicles. The present invention relates to automatic gear changes for light vehicles, such as bicycles with an auxiliary motor, comprising, for driving the driving wheel, a roller held elastically against the tire of said driving wheel.
It has already been proposed to use multiple transmission rollers designed in such a way that, by replacing the roller in contact with the wheel with another, the speed can be changed so that the engine operates at a favorable speed whatever the speed. of the vehicle.
The devices of this type known hitherto have the drawback that the user is not always competent to correctly adjust the reduction of the force between the motor and the wheel of the vehicle. In addition, the user is obliged to operate an additional control.
However, the invention proposes to allow the driving of the vehicles concerned by any person, even if the latter has no competence for driving these vehicles, especially when it comes to bicycles with an auxiliary motor.
The object of the invention is to contribute to the simplification of the control of the engine by making the operation of the variable speed transmission automatic. The object of the invention is characterized in that the drive roller of the wheel is mounted so as to be able to slide axially along its axis of rotation and in that its running surface is shaped so as to present at least two straight sections of different diameters, the respective parts of the roller being capable of coacting each with the tire for a determined position of the roller along its axis,
the axial displacements of said roller being controlled by a dynamometric device as a function of the torque transmitted by the roller in such a way that an increase in the torque transmitted automatically causes an increase in the gear ratio between the motor and the wheel.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, some embodiments of the invention. Fig. 1 shows, in section, part of an auxiliary engine provided with an automatic gear change device established in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 shows, on a smaller scale and in partial elevation, a bicycle on which the device of FIG. 7 ..
Fig. 3, finally, shows, in axial section, a variant of a member forming part of the gear change device of FIG. 1. It is assumed that the invention is applied to a light vehicle, such as a bicycle, which it is desired to be able to drive with the aid of a roller which is actuated by an auxiliary motor and which is resiliently applied to it. the tire or the rim of one of the wheels of the vehicle, for example on the front wheel of the bicycle.
In figs, 1 and 2 is shown only part of the auxiliary motor (which can also be made up in any suitable way), that is to say part of cylinder 1 and the connecting rod. 2, the casing 3, and the crankshaft 4 which is integral with the shaft 5 through which is made. the drive of the roller.
The shaft 5 is housed in an auxiliary casing 6, integral with the main casing 3 and open to. its lower part so that the roller can be in contact with the tire 7 of the vehicle wheel. The shaft 5 is journalled in the side walls of the casing 6 using ball bearings 8 or the like, and it has a shoulder 9 in the vicinity of which a hole 10 suitable for receiving a pin is drilled.
The body of the roller is constituted by a sleeve 11 engaged on the shaft 5 and one end of which has the outer rim 12 while its other end 13 is threaded and carries a nut 14 which bears on an annular part 15 of pressed sheet metal and in the shape of a conical bowl, with an outer rim 1.6. On the part 15 is engaged the active part of the roller, this part being constituted by a frustoconical sleeve 17, made of rubber or other suitable material, which is clamped more or less between the flanges 12 and 16, by the nut 14.
A threaded radial hole is drilled through the sleeve 11 in which is housed a screw 18 terminated by a lug 19 which is engaged in a threaded portion 20 of the drive shaft 5 so that the roller can move, in one direction or the other, along this shaft as a function of the resistance which opposes the rotation of said roller, the assembly forming a dynamometric mechanism whose operation is well known.
A powerful spring 21 tends to move the roller away from a washer 22 which bears on the shoulder 9 of the shaft 5, which is retained by a pin engaged in the hole 10 and which is partially housed in diametrically opposed notches. of the washer 22 to prevent the latter from rotating around the shaft 5.
At the opposite end of the sleeve 11, a small spring 23 bears, on the one hand, on this sleeve and, on the other hand, on a washer 24 resting, via a ring 25 forming a spacer, on the ball bearing 8. The latter abuts against a plate 26 fixed to the side wall of the auxiliary housing 6. for example by means of screws 27.
Springs 21 and 23 are. protected respectively by flexible sheaths 28 and 29, for example of rubberized fabric.
In fig. 2 is shown, schematically, the mounting of the device described above on a bicycle under rapid drive by the auxiliary motor. The front wheel is designated by 30, the frame 31, the handlebars 32 and the front fork. This fork com carries a boss 34 to which the auxiliary motor 35 is articulated. A spring 36 attached, on the one hand, to the housing 6 and, on the other hand, to the front fork 33 constantly urges the assembly downwards, which is articulated to the boss 34, so as to elastically apply the roller on the tire 7.
When the pebble is. displaced axially relative to the tire along the shaft 5 and when the diameter of the contact surface increases or decreases, due to the conical shape of the roller, the spring 36 allows a slight rise or fall of the articulated assembly relative to the axis of the wheel 30.
The device thus constituted operates as follows: When the motor 35 is stopped, the roller comes, by the effect of the spring 21 which is much more powerful than the spring 23, automatically occupy the position A shown in dotted lines to the right of fig. 1.
If the engine is. designed in such a way that it is started by being driven by the wheel 30 of the bicycle, the user thus benefits from a greater demulti plication when he wants to start the engine, which reduces the he must exert the effort on the pedals. Indeed, if the wheel 30 becomes a drive to drive the motor 35, the direction of the thread 20 is designed such that the roller abuts (position A) against the washer 24.
When the motor begins to operate to drive the roller and when the transmitted torque increases, the effect of the d3-namometric connection 19-20 existing between the shaft 5 and this roller is to tend to move the latter by position .4 towards position B against the action of spring 22. This spring is calibrated in such a way that the roller can only come to occupy this position B in the case where the force requested from the motor is the absolutely maximum force before the engine can stall.
If the transmitted torque decreases, the spring 22 pushes the roller back to position A without this necessarily being reached, the final position between B and A depending on the requested torque.
As the engine 35 is generally an explosion engine, the crankshaft 4 is subjected to small variations in speed which facilitate. the lateral movements of the roller, which thus undergoes a slight rolling movement along the shaft 5 while the lug 18 moves in the thread 20. The spring 36 allows, as already said, a slight lifting or lowering, relative to the axis of the wheel 30, of the assembly articulated to the boss 34, which compensates for the increase or decrease in the useful diameter of the roller when the latter moves from B to A or from A to B.
In fig. 3 is shown, in two positions, a stepped roller comprising, for example, two cylindrical stages 46 and 47 interconnected by a frustoconical ramp 48. The cylindrical parts are those which intervene for normal operation at different speeds, whereas the conical part acts mainly as a transition to allow the engagement of the roller on one or the other of these stages.
