Description

Paste of metallic pigments. The present invention relates to a paste of metallic pigments.

Currently, metallic pigments whose particles have the form of fine flakes are available in the form of dry powders and pastes. Dry powders are composed of fine metal particles, the surfaces of which are covered with a film comprising a fatty acid or a mixture of fatty acids. The pastes additionally contain an amount of a volatile hydrocarbon sufficient to give the product the consistency of a paste.

Such pigment pastes can be made from metallic pigments in dry form, previously disintegrated, simply by mixing them with a volatile hydrocarbon or by grinding in the wet state and filtering to give the product the desired consistency.

Until now, many operations have been necessary for the preparation of pigments emulsifiable in water; thus, for example, in the preparation of pigment pastes suitable for emulsifying in water and containing casein, a cooking operation was carried out in order to react the casein with one or more other ingredients of the paste , before the final mixing operation with the aqueous medium.

In addition, it was often necessary to carry out several separate mixing operations. A paste of pigments of this kind, suitable for being emulsified in water and containing casein, is described, for example, in Swiss patent No. 295057.

The aim of the present invention is to provide a paste of stable metallic pigments, capable of being emulsified in water, but containing no casein, which retains its pasty consistency and does not agglomerate during storage in the environment. shielded from air and which, mixed with water, forms aqueous coatings, coating compositions, inks, summer.

The paste of metallic pigments, capable of being emulsified in water, which is the subject of the invention, is characterized in that it comprises metallic flakes, a mixture of hydrocarbons boiling between 100 and 215 C. , a fatty acid containing 7 6 to 18 carbon atoms, tallic oil and at least one amino compound soluble in water and containing at most 7 carbon atoms, this amino compound being capable of reacting with fatty acid in aqueous solution.

The present invention is based on the discovery that metallic flakes, obtained by the dry process or by pasting, can be used for the formation of pastes which can be emulsified in water and which do not harden during storage.

For there preparation of the pigment paste, it is possible to use, as starting material, a mixture composed of fine flakes of aluminum or of another metal or alloy, for example copper, of hydrocarbons boiling between 100 and 215 C, for example mixtures of aliphatic and / or aromatic hydrocarbons, and at least one fatty acid such as for example palmitic, stearic, oleic and ricinoleic acids, and add to this mixture of tallic oil and. an amino compound as specified above.

Tall oil is a byproduct of the manufacture of cellulose by the sulphate process, which normally contains about 40 to 55% of resinous acids, about 40 to 55% of fatty acids and about 5-10% of non-saponifiable materials such as steroids, higher alcohols, hydrocarbons, etc.

As the water-soluble amino compound, 2-amino-1-butanol, 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol, isopropanolamines, ethanolamines, morpholine and monon-butylamine, separately or in combination.

These compounds are able to combine with fatty acids and other organic acids present (from tall oil), to form effective emulsifying agents, when the metal pigment paste is subsequently mixed with water.

It can be assumed that these water soluble amino compounds react with part of the fatty acid (s) and / or resinous or other acids, to form water soluble soaps, upon subsequent mixing of the pastes. of metallic pigments with water.

Aluminum pigments obtained by a dry process or by a wet process can be used as starting materials; they can be presented, for example, in the form of a mass containing, by weight, from 70 to. 85% metallic flakes, from 0.5 to 2,

0% fatty acid used as a lubricant and 14.5 to 28.0% of a mixture of hydrocarbons boiling between 100 and 215 C.

In a similar manner, copper pigments can be used, which can be provided, for example, in the form of a mass containing by weight from 80 to 90% of metallic flakes, from 0.5 to 2,

0% fatty acid used as lubricant and from 9.5 to 18.0% of said hydrocarbons.

It should be noted that the paste of metallic pigments which is the subject of the invention is not in the form of emulsions when it comes out of production. This paste is preferably kept in as anhydrous state as possible; however, crystallization water and small amounts of absorbed water can be tolerated in the. dough, at the time of packaging.

The following examples illustrate the invention. Each product is prepared by mixing 605 g of metallic flakes, an appropriate quantity of a mixture of hydrocarbons boiling between 100 and 21.5 C and a small quantity of one or several fatty acids with 212 g of commercial tallic oil which may contain up to 10% resinous matter, for example gum ester,

and with 91 g of at least one of the amino compounds mentioned above, the total weight of the mixture being 908 g in each case. Example 1: A paste of aluminum pigments was prepared according to the general formula above by a single mixing operation.

This paste was composed, in% by weight, of 52.3% of aluminum flakes, 13,

  3% of a mixture of hydrocarbons boiling between 100 and 215 ° C., 1.0% stearic acid, 21.0 0 tallic oil, 2.4% gum ester and 10,

0% morpholine. This paste exhibited good stability: after storage for several months in closed containers, it had retained: its original pasty consistency, having not formed an agglomeration and had not undergone hardening.

When this paste is mixed with water at room temperature or with hot water, at a rate of 6 g of paste for 25 em3 of water, it is easily emulsified to form a free-flowing aqueous coating. , which can be applied to paper and metal plates with good results. The dried coating films exhibit the characteristic luster, luster and reflectance of metallic aluminum.

Example 2: A paste of copper pigments, capable of being emulsified in water, was prepared, following the general formula above, by a simple mixing operation.

A product was obtained composed, in 0 / u by weight, of 54.0% copper flakes, 10.60% of a mixture of hydrocarbons boiling between 100 and 215 C, 2,

0% stearic acid, 23.4% commercial tall oil and 10% triethanolamine.

This paste can be easily dispersed in water at 60 C, at a rate of 12 g of paste for 25 em3 of water, to obtain a free-flowing aqueous paste, which can be applied to paper and steel plates. , giving dry films with the appearance of metallic copper.

Example 3: Another paste of aluminum pigments, suitable for being emulsified in dais (le, water, composed, in% by weight, of 52.3% (the flakes of 'aluminum, 1.3,

  3% of a mixture of hydrocarbons boiling between 100 and 215 C, 1.0 1.10 stearic acid, 23,

4% tallic oil and 10% triethanolamine. This paste retains its initial pasty consistency well. In addition, it remains stable and does not form agglomeration after several months of storage.

An aqueous coating prepared by means of this paste flows freely, and the dry films obtained therefrom exhibit the luster, luster and reflectivity characteristic of aluminum.

Example 4: A paste of aluminum pigments composed, en / o by weight, of 52.3% of aluminum flakes, l.3, was prepared.

  3% of a mixture of hydrocarbons boiling between 100 and 215 C, I% of stearic acid, 23,

4% tallic oil and 10% 2-amino-1-butanol. This paste is easily dispersed in water to form a coating. The dry films obtained by means of this coating have the typical appearance of metallic aluminum.

Example 5: A paste suitable for emulsion in water was prepared from a mass of aluminum pigments obtained using a non-film-forming lubricant, such as acid oleic. This paste was composed, in%. by weight, from 52,

  1% aluminum flakes, 14.0 0 / u of a boiling hydrocarbon mixture. between 100 and 215 C, 0.5% oleic acid, 23,

  4% tallic oil and 1.0.0% 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol.

This paste can be mixed with hot water at a temperature of 651, C and gives an excellent dispersion. Satisfactory films can be produced using this aqueous coating. These films have a good appearance and good opacity.

The relative proportions of the various ingredients of these metallic pigment pastes can be varied within wide limits. Suitable mixtures contain approximately, by weight, 31 to 74% metal flakes, 2 to 15.6% of a hydrocarbon mixture boiling between 100 and 215 C,

0.1 to 2.3% of at least one fatty acid such as stearic, palmitic, oleic and ricinoleic acids, 3.0 to 25% of at least one amino compound such as those which are men - mentioned above,

from 15 to 45% tall oil, up to 10.0% by weight thereof which can be replaced by an oil or resinous material, such as gum ester. ,
