Parmi ces produits se trouvent notamment l'hydro-coumarine, l'acide 1-naphtylamino-4-sulfonique; le 2 naphtylamino-6-8-disulfonate de sodium; les dérivés de l'acide dibenzylaminostilbènesulfo- nique; le naphtalène;

Process of treating wood to improve its appearance. The present invention relates to a process for treating wood with a view to improving its appearance, which is characterized in that the wood is treated with a product containing in solution an optical brightener.
Optical brighteners have in fact the property of converting the ultra-violet rays or neighboring them into a blue light or of a similar shade which contributes to making less apparent the yellowish reflections which tend to predominate during the aging of the wood. . The use of these brighteners can also reinforce the contrasts between the different parts of the wood and thus accentuate the pattern of the grain.
In most cases, the brightener is indicated to be compatible with the aniline dyes, sealants and lacquers commonly used for the treatment of wood. This is because although brightener can sometimes be applied to wood in a particular solution, it is. in general advantageous to incorporate it in one of the aforementioned products and in particular in a dye, so as to simultaneously carry out the application of the brightener and the coloring of the wood, in a single operation.
The optical brighteners which have proved to be the most suitable, both from the point of view of improving the appearance of the woods and that of their compatibility with water-based stains, are. coumarin derivatives, such as beta-methyl-umbelliferone, stilbene derivatives and aminonaphthylamine derivatives, which are colorless and fluorescent products exhibiting an affinity for cellulose. These brighteners give the woods and in particular the grain of the latter a marked reflective power and more shine.
Among these products are in particular hydro-coumarin, 1-naphthylamino-4-sulfonic acid; sodium 2-naphthylamino-6-8-disulfonate; dibenzylaminostilbenesulfonic acid derivatives; naphthalene;
benzoglyoxalines, such as styrylbenzoglyoxalines or 1- (ni -acetamido-2-benzoglyoxaline) -2- (acet-amidophenyl) -ethylene; condensation products of triazine and 2,2'-bis (1-benzyl-benzoglyoxaline) -ethylene.
It is also possible to use the o-alkoxy-benzoyl derivatives of 4,4'-diamino-stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid and the o-alkoxy-benzoyl derivatives of 4,4'-diamino- acid. stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid.
Particularly indicated is, B-methyl-umbelliferone, which is a hydroxy-methyl-coumarin compatible with solvents such as isopropyl alcohol or acetone.
Also indicated are styrylbenzoblyoxalins and in particular 4-methyl-7-diethylamino-coumarin.
To form a composition comprising both such an optical brightener and a water-based dye, the brightener is preferably dissolved in an anhydrous organic solvent or one containing only a little water which at the same time constitutes a diluent of. water-based dyeing. As the solvent for the brightener, it is possible, for example, to use ordinary 95% alcohol, while using, on the other hand, the dye in solution because dyes of this type are only slightly soluble in the alcohol.
As good solvents for these water-based stains, glycols and glycerins are known, the use of which, however, presents some difficulties, because if they are used alone or in too high a proportion, they leave a greasy residue on the wood. hygroscopic which, after absorption of water, tends to lift the wood fibers.
The ethers of glycerin and of glycols have the same drawbacks.
However, it has been observed that by incorporating into the mixture an anhydrous solvent which evaporates more slowly than alcohol, it is possible to avoid any untimely lifting of the wood fibers.
For this purpose, ethylene glycol ethers can perfectly well be used with ethyl alcohol or metanol; however, it is preferable to add 2-5% higher order ethers or glycol in order to increase the subsequent solubility in the final product.
Here are, by way of example, some dye compositions containing an opti brightener in solution, capable of being used for carrying out the process which is the subject of the invention.

This composition constitutes a good product for general use which is distinguished by good solvent power and good resistance to humidity, which helps to prevent lifting of the veins. This composition can also be advantageously used to dilute or lighten dyes of the same type.
With different tinctures, it is possible to add toluol in variable amounts depending on the degree of dilution desired. Although toluol is a typical diluent, other derivatives of tar or petroleum based solvents can also be used.
According to a well-known way of doing things, bare wood is commonly treated, in order, using a first colored or transparent coating called dye, a fixing agent and a glossy lacquer, before be sanded and polished in the conventional manner. Putty applications and intermediate sanding can also be provided.
The application of the optical brightener can also be carried out within the framework of such a treatment, the brightener then being able either to be applied during a preliminary treatment in a colorless coating, or to be incorporated into one. or more of the various aforementioned products applied successively to the wood.
The application of the brightener during a pre-treatment, in a colorless basecoat, is particularly indicated when it is above all a question of enhancing the grain of the wood, in particular on light wood or of inferior quality whose veins are not very marked. Adapting a brightener to a primer also eliminates any tendency to yellowing and increases the quality and strength of the finish obtained.
The addition of the brightener to the stain and to one or more of the coatings applied subsequently, with or without a prior primer, contributes more markedly to reinforcing the luminescence of the wood and thus to accentuating its reflection. From this point of view, the best results are obtained when brightener is incorporated into several of the superimposed plasters.
Here are, by way of examples, different implementations of the process which is the subject of the invention carried out within the framework of the above-mentioned conventional treatment of wood.
Example I: The following compositions are applied successively to maple wood: a) A first composition or colorless primer formed from part of a brightener consisting of a beta-methylumbelliferone, such as that the product branded Uvitex W, and one thousand parts of a diluent consisting of sixty parts of a solvent such as toluol, xylol, naphtha, etc., and thirty parts of an ester such as acetate d ethyl, butyl acetate or other solvent for cellulose, and ten parts of an alcohol such as methyl, ethyl or butyl alcohol, etc.
This first solution, or primer, is sprayed onto the stripped wood and then air dried for about twenty-five minutes.
(b) A standard maple stain which does not swell the grain of the wood, which is sprayed onto the wood and allowed to air dry also for about twenty-five minutes.
c) A fixative composed of stearate and a lacquer formed from nitrocellulose, a resin and a plasticizer, the stearate being intended to facilitate bridging.
d) The same glossy lacquer as that used in the composition of the fixative mentioned under c).
The wood is finally sanded and polished in the usual way.
Example II: The procedure is as for example I, but one adds to the fixative c) and to the glossy lacquer d) of the brightener Uvitex W mentioned under a) at a rate of part d concentrated brightener for a thousand parts of gloss lacquer.
Example III: The procedure is as in Example I, however omitting the prior treatment a) and adding to at least one of the compositions b), c) and d), the brightener Uvitex W mentioned, at the rate of one part per thousand of dye, respectively of glossy lacquer.
The presence of brightener in several superimposed layers contributes, as indicated above, to improving the final result.
Example IV: To treat aca jou plywood, the procedure is as in Example I, however, between operations b) and c), an application of dark pigmented mastic added of Uvitex W at a rate of one part per thousand of mastic, and adding to the stain b), to the fixative c) and to the lacquer d) also a part of Uvitex W concentrated for a thousand parts of dye, respectively of lacquer.
One can of course use other brightening agents than beta-methylumbelliferone and good results have in particular been obtained with an amino-naphthylamine, such as for example the product brand Floral 701 and with a derivative of amino-na .phthylamine, such as for example the product brand CC-0-124, incorporated at a rate of one part per thousand in the composition used for the pretreatment, in the dye, in the fixative and in the glossy lacquer used to perfect the treatment.
Woods other than maple and mahogany mentioned can of course be treated successfully using the same process and with the same products, the stains used being however selected according to the particular wood treated.
Fixatives and lacquers to be used are those commonly used in the wood industry. We will apply them. generally at the udder, about fifteen minutes apart, the drying of the fixative being activated if necessary by heating to about 40 ° C. It is recommended to sand off the fixative coat before applying the final gloss lacquer coat.
When using a mastic, a pigmented or natural wood paste, it is applied with a brush and then, after a drying time, it is wiped off and left to dry at least overnight before applying the subsequent layers.
The proportion of brightening agent to be introduced into the different compositions may vary depending on the quality and age of the treated wood. It is generally between 0.002 and 10% by weight of the total mixture.
Water-based stains which do not swell the grain of the wood are generally composed of colors of water soluble aniline, a solvent such as ethylene glycol, etc., and a diluent such as toluol for example. Other dyes can, of course, also be used.
