Description

Portable notching machine, especially accounting records. The present invention relates to a portable notching machine, in particular accounting records.

The cards of the type capable of being used with said machine have along one or more edges one or more rows of perforations which are grouped and identified by suitable indications, so as to represent categories. In practice, one or more of these perforations is executed up to the outer edge of the sheet so as to form a set of notches belonging to a single category. These notched cards may be subjected to selective sorting by passing one or more sorting pins through the selected perforations of a group of cards, these perforations representing the desired category.

By then allowing the cards having the notches or slots coinciding with the perforations in which the pins enter to separate from the others, while the rest of the cards are retained by these pins, it is possible to separate from a stack of cards one or more categories .

So far, these notches have been formed at. using electrically operated or pedal operated machines. Consequently, the operator having carried out the necessary work on the cards had to leave his work table or his desk to carry the cards to the notching machine, then return to continue his work. Such an interruption in handling. of record cards is not an unacceptable load when the quantity of notched cards is large enough to occupy an operator at this work several hours per day.

When these quantities are small and the number of daily cards is low, the operation of a large machine is not economical and it is bulky.

The object of the present invention is to enable the operator to carry out work on the cards without leaving his work table, by means of a portable machine.

The machine according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a cutting cylinder slidably mounted, but angularly wedged on a shaft journaled in a frame, this frame supporting a knife mounted so as to be able to stand. move in the direction of the cylinder or to move away from it in order to notch the material placed on this cylinder, members fixed on the frame holding the cylinder in a position in which a first portion of its surface comprised in two generatrices is found next to the knife,

said shaft being mounted in the frame so as to be able to move axially with respect to the cylinder, in order to be able to reverse the latter to present to the knife a portion of the surface of the cylinder opposite to said first portion, this cylinder having a length at least equal to twice the dimension of the knife considered in the. same direction. The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine which is the subject of the invention.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the embodiment of FIG. 1, showing a knife in the raised or resting position.

Fig. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2, but showing the knife and a lever of my work in the notched position.

Fig. 4 is a section taken along line 4-4 in FIG. 3.

Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 in FIG. 3.

Fig. 6 is a section through line 6-6 in FIG. 3.

Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a plug alignment disc.

The embodiment of the machine shown in the drawing comprises a frame forming a plate for the cards and a knife arm, intended to be actuated by hand, on which is mounted a knife with two cutting ends, the arrangement being such that this knife can be easily reversed to present a new cutting edge to the plugs to be notched. A rotary cutting cylinder mounted below the knife is intended to cooperate with the latter for notching the cards.

The cutting cylinder is actuated by the movement of the knife, so as to move step by step in an angular movement in order to present a new zone to the knife for each active stroke of the latter. The cylinder is also reversible, so as to present a new peripheral zone to the knife when the face used has been intensely marked and is no longer suitable.

the release mechanism of the operating lever is also mounted on the machine, so that this lever can be released from the actuating mechanism of the polishing knife being brought into a position parallel to said frame and adjacent thereto in order to facilitate the storage. A plug alignment disc includes a pin that can be separated from the machine to facilitate its engagement in the holes facing the plugs, so that it. it is thus possible to align these plugs and keep them aligned for notching.

The frame 10 is formed by a hollow molding and is provided, on its upper front face, with a plate 11 on which the cards are placed during notching.

A side console 12 is removably attached to the sides of the frame 10 by buttons 13 intended to engage in retaining slots 14 formed in the internal flange of the console 12 (FIGS. 4 and 5). In this way, the consoles can be removably attached to one or the other of the sides of the frame 10.

At the rear of the plate 11, the frame 10 is provided with an upwardly directed head 15 carrying in its center a casing 16 extending upward and in which the knife and its actuating mechanism are mounted. The front part 17 of the housing 16 is provided with a vertical orifice serving to receive and move the knife and the arm carrying the latter. The side walls 18 of the housing 16 are provided with facing openings 19 in which are mounted bearings 20a and 20b for an internal transverse shaft 21 carrying an operating lever 22.

The right pad 20a, looking at fig. 6, is gou lashed at 23 on the transverse shaft 21 of the operating lever 22, so as to rotate with this lever. The pad 20a is provided with a heel of actuation 24 studied so as to attack a notch 25 made on the. right-hand branch 26 of an actuating yoke 28 substantially [J-shaped, which is mounted on the shaft 21 inside the housing 16.

The left end, looking at fig. 6 of the shaft 21, is provided with a spring 29 bearing at its inner end on a washer 30 applied against the bearing 20b, while its opposite end bears against the. internal face of a cap 31 fixed to the end of the shaft 21 by an elastic ring 32.

Thus, the spring loads normally. shaft 21 to the left, looking at fig. 6, and the shaft 21 and its heel 24 are engaged with the u-shaped yoke of the actuating mechanism. However, when it is desired to release the operating lever so that it can be lowered to the platform 11., as shown in phantom in fig. 1, position in which it allows easy storage of the machine, this operating lever is moved to the right despite the bias of the spring 29,

so that the bearing 20a then moves with the shaft 21 and disengages the heel 24 from the notch 25, in order to allow the free movement of the operating lever without driving the cutting mechanism. The knife actuation mechanism comprises an arm 33 for supporting the knife, mounted loosely on a shaft 34, the ends of which are supported by ears 35, bent upwards, of a support flange 36 fixed by screws 37 on bosses 38 formed on the lower part of the head 15.

The arm 33 has a rear extension 39 directed upwards, carrying a stop screw 40 held by a locking nut 41 and can be adjusted so as to abut by its internal end 42 against the shaft 21 of the operating lever. #work at the end of the active knife stroke.

The arm 33 also carries an anterior extension 43 provided with an upper flange 44 (fig. 2) and a vertical anterior rim 45 which tapers towards the front, so as to form a ridge 46 ( fig. 4) on which is mounted a knife 47 having in cross section a shape of V and fixed removably on the edge 46 by a central locking screw 48.

The lower part of the knife projects below the lower part of the anterior extension 43 (fig. 2 and 3) of the cutting device, so as to form a cutting end projecting outwardly in a cantilever manner. . It will also be noted that, in the raised position, the knife is slightly inclined towards the rear. In said work, since the arm 33 pivots on the shaft 34, the cutting movement is curved.

The two ends of the knife are identical, so that if the knife is dull, the screw 48 can be loosened and the blade reversed so that a new part of this blade attacks the notching cards.

The arm 33 is capable of being actuated from the yoke 28 by means of a pair of connecting rods 49 articulated by an axis 50 between the opposite branches of the yoke and, therefore, from this axis, so as to attack the opposite faces of the arm 33, on which they are mounted by a pin 51.

Thus, when moving the operating lever 22 so as to rotate the shaft 21, the heel 24 of the neck 20a causes the yoke 28 to rotate during the movement of the lever, and the arm 33 is moved. angularly around the shaft 34 by means of the links. 49, thereby causing the knife to move back and forth to ensure the cutting operation.

The knife support arm 33 is also provided with an extension 52 downwards, on which is mounted a pawl arm 53 directed towards the had, this arm preferably being made of sheet metal and having a notable width (fig. . 6). The front end of the pawl 53 is bent upwards to form a finger 54 which engages the teeth 55 of a ratchet wheel 56 mounted on a shaft 57 with a cutting cylinder 58.

The cylinder 58 is pivotally mounted by internal bearing bushings 59 made of sheet metal and provided with heels 60 folded inward and which engage in a keyway 61 of the shaft 57, so as to ensure the rotation of the cylinder. cylin dre during the pivoting of the shaft and the ratchet wheel 56. A resilient stop blade 62 (fg: 5) also attacks the ratchet wheel on the side opposite to the pawl 53, this blade being fixed by a screw 63 (fig. 2) on a boss 64 located under the plate 11.

A res out 65 is interposed between the axis 51 connecting the rod 49 to the cutting arm 33, being directed downwards from this axis to come to be fixed on the front end of the arm 53 in order to keep the latter under tension. .

When arm 33 rotates clockwise at the end of an active stroke, pawl 53 is moved forward and its engagement with teeth 55 of the ratchet wheel causes the. rotation of one pitch of the cylinder so as to present upwards a portion of the cylinder between two generatrices for the knife to come into contact during the following cutting operation. When the arm 33 is moved again during the actuation of the operating lever 22,

the pawl 53 moves to the right, looking at fig. 3 and slides on the teeth of the ratchet without rotating it, the elastic stopper 62 preventing any accidental rotation during this movement. The cutting cylinder shaft 57 (Fig. 5) protrudes to the right from the ratchet wheel and is supported in a side hole 66 in the frame. The inner end of the shaft is supported in bored center tabs 67 located under the front wall of housing 16.

Between the ratchet wheel 56 and the side wall of the base is interposed a spring 68 which normally urges the shaft 57 to the left, looking at FIG. 5, the outer end of this shaft then engaging in the tab 67 on the left. Note, however, that the width of the cutting cylinder represents approximately twice the width of the knife and that the legs 67 are not centered with respect to the base, but are slightly offset towards the side thereof, so that the knife only attacks the right side of the cutting cylinder.

The layout. is such that once the surface of the cylinder marked by it comes into contact with the blade, the operator can move the shaft 57 to the right despite the compression of the spring 68. During this movement, the shaft is disengaged from the pa lier 59 and one can consequently separate the cutting cylinder from the shaft and invert it so as to bring the side which is now to the left of the knife into alignment therewith. The shaft can then be released, and the spring 68 again engages its end in the bearing 59 while ensuring the keying, so that a step-by-step rotation results in response to the other cutting operations.

As previously indicated, the frame 10 is formed by a hollow molding, and it will be appreciated that when the knife notches the pins, the material removed by this notch falls over the cutting cylinder into the lower cavity of the frame. To prevent the accumulation of cutting waste thus produced, the bottom of the frame is closed by a plate 69 provided with a central shutter 70 pivotally mounted on a transverse axis 71. The end 72 (fig. 2 and 3 ) of this shutter 70 carries a sliding latch 73 normally biased forward poiïr to attack an edge 74 of the light by a spring 75.

The latch 73 is provided with an actuating button 76, the arrangement being such that when the button 76 is moved to slide the latch 73 despite the bias of the spring 75, the shutter 70 can move by pivoting around of its axis 71, so that there is a simple way to remove the waste.

To align the pins 77 on the plate 11, an alignment disc 78 carries a central pin 79 capable of being introduced easily through the openings facing the cards in order to keep the latter in cohesion during notching. This removable disk makes it possible to make the cards coincide at a point away from the machine, then to bring the cards from this point to the notching machine without destroying their alignment.
