Piston ring and process for its manufacture. The known piston rings are created so that the radial pressure on the circumference of the ring is as uniform as possible everywhere. The object of the invention is a non-circular piston ring, namely a piston ring whose non-circular shape should correspond to the condition that the Pbadialddriiel distribution of the tensioned ring is unevenly over its circumference in a certain way.
According to the invention, in order to generate the desired irregularity in the radial pressure distribution of the tensioned piston ring, the diameter of the ring contracted in the tensioning band is measured over the joint greater than the ring that has been brought into the circular shape, and it is located in the quadrants on both sides of the center of the ring ring that are symmetrical to the center of the ring one point each at which the radius of curvature of the contracted ring is equal to the radius of curvature of the ring brought into the circular shape.
The two points lying symmetrically in the aforementioned quadrants, in which the radius of curvature of the ring corresponds to the. Corresponds to the radius of curvature of the cylinder, can lie at the intersection of the axis, which is perpendicular to the axis laid by the joint. But they can also be shifted symmetrically towards the center of the ring back within the two lower quadrants. It is practical if the points lie symmetrically between 48 and 58 distance from the center of the ring back.
The contraction of the piston ring in the tightening strap means the insertion of the expanded ring into an elastic baud made of spring steel or the like, which is then pulled together into a loop so that the butt ends of the piston ring just touch each other or at most as much play as it occurs in the operating state. The amount by which the tensioning band is pulled together usually applies to determining the total radial pressure exerted by the piston ring on the cylinder wall.
The piston ring takes a different shape in the tension band than in the cylinder due to its elasticity; In the cylinder, the piston ring is naturally circular, whereas in the tension band the piston ring has the claimed non-circular shape.
The method for producing the piston ring according to the invention is characterized in that a template is made from a model ring that has been turned round and then cut open by changing the cross-section of the model ring in places to generate a certain radial pressure distribution of the piston ring to be produced and then changing the ring is spread with a force corresponding to the sum of the radial pressure forces of the ring to be produced,
whereupon the piece corresponding to the spread is cut out of the balance ring, rotated according to the template in the copying process.
In the drawing, for example, an embodiment of a piston ring according to the invention is shown in plan view and in the fol lowing an embodiment. the process according to the invention explained.
The non-circular shape of the ring results from the instruction that the diameter d created by the joint 1. of the tightened ring 2 is greater than the diameter of the circular ring and that it is in the quadrants on both sides of the ring back center 3 Q and P symmetrical to the center of the ring back, positions 4, 5.
in which the radius of curvature 7- is equal to the radius of curvature of the ring that has been brought into a circular shape. The angles are advantageously 48 to 58.
The resulting non-round shape of the Kol benringes can be produced by turning, grinding or milling on so-called copying machine tools. One works according to a model, that of the form. of the exposed, d. H. at the joint spread, finished ring corresponds. The spreading joint ends of the finished ring are bridged on the model by a filler piece.
If you only turn the outer circumference of these piston rings out of round, clamp the rings together after cutting out the piece bridging the joint and then drill them out round, then when the rings are pressed together in a die, the tensions in the ring are so high that permanent deformations result . Such rings have already lost some of their tension after being bored out.
In order to fully maintain the tension of the piston rings, they are also formed out of round on the inside, before cutting out the piece of the ring representing the joint distance. You can then perform both the external and the internal form turning at the same time without loosening the piston ring from its clamping device.
A template is used to manufacture the non-circular piston ring. A piston ring template must have the shape that the circular ring after installation has before it is installed. Cut open a ring that is turned round on the outside and inside and load it tangentially with two. forces acting on the joint in spreading direction, then the ring takes on the shape it should have,
if a load, evenly distributed on all sides, twice the total height of the two spreading forces, is supposed to push it back into the circular shape. The force required to tear open the joint therefore corresponds to the sum of the radial pressures evenly distributed over the entire circumference of the ring. In this way you get a template without calculation, according to which you can produce rings on a copy lathe.
If the radial pressure is now to be distributed according to a different law and to be higher at the joint than at the other circumferential points of the ring, one can still assume that the model ring described above is used as a template, provided that the desired radial pressure distribution of the workpiece is achieved a weakening or reinforcement effect of the cross-section of the model ring at individual circumferential points can easily be called forth.
On the basis of the considerations set out above, the production of the piston ring is carried out in such a way that a template is made from a model ring that has been turned round and then mounted, by using the cross-section of the model ring to generate a certain radial pressure distribution of the piston ring to be produced changed in places and the model ring is then expanded with a force corresponding to the sum of the radial pressure forces of the rings to be produced.
In order to achieve the force required to expand the model ring, the ring halves that are on both sides of the center of the ring spine opposite the joint can be grasped as curved, unilaterally clamped rods that are loaded with forces over their entire length.
Since the degree of irregularity of the radial pressure distribution is relatively low in piston rings with non-uniform contact pressure over the circumference, it can also be assumed for the calculation that the maximum bending moment M in the center of the ring back is just as great as in a ring with uniform contact pressure distribution. It can therefore be assumed that the ring half, which is to be regarded as a curved rod clamped on one side, is loaded by a uniform surface pressure p over its entire length.
If a denotes the axial ring height and d the diameter of the ring, and it is taken into account that the effective lever arm of a semicircular carrier is equal to the diameter d and the sum of all forces acting on it acts as well as an individual force a - p - d, those with a lever arm half the length of the diameter

attacks, the result is:
EMI0003.0012
The same bending moment should produce the tangential force T required at each joint end of the piston ring to expand the ring.
The following applies to this tangential force
EMI0003.0015
The rings are then rotated using the copying process according to the template produced in this way and the piece corresponding to the spreading is cut out of the resulting non-circular rings.
A piston ring which has been produced in this way as a so-called non-circular piston ring and then has the said radial pressure distribution in the tensioned state has considerable technical advantages over the known piston rings.
The higher radial pressure of the ring at the joint and the equalization of this overpressure on both sides of the center of the ring back prevent combustion gases from being blown through between the ring and the cylinder wall at critical speeds. The breaks observed so far are avoided. Finally, the collapse of the impact ends, which corresponds to a voltage loss often observed at this point during operation, is counteracted.
