Description

Method for drying wood by means of high frequency and hot air The present invention relates to a method for drying wood by means of high frequency and hot air.

In the context of mechanical wood processing and wood refinement, wood drying occupies an excellent position. In spite of this, efforts to establish a perfect scientific basis for the technology of wood drying are only 25 years old.

Since then, mainly open-air drying using solar energy or mechanical movement (centrifuge), steam-air drying and drying with superheated steam have been developed. These three processes, either individually or in series or with one another (centrifuge and air), are by far the most common processes. There are also chemical drying, drying in hot oil, drying in organic vapors and vacuum drying for individual applications. Ilolztroeknung with infrared is practically hardly possible.

Even today, steam-air drying in chambers is dominant and, more recently, chamber drying with superheated steam has also been developing rapidly.

In the. In recent years, repeated and sometimes intensive attempts to dry wood using high frequency have been undertaken, with the wood being stacked in chambers between two electrodes in a conventional manner, sometimes with, sometimes without simultaneous use of hot air or steam.

The initially promising experiments with high-frequency drying in chambers turned out to be negative or restricted their use to a few exceptional cases because it was found that the effect of high-frequency results in a very rapid increase in temperature in the wood, so that drying occurs from the inside outside. However, this property, which is to be assessed as an advantage, also has disadvantages. Since the temperature inside rises rapidly above the boiling point, vapor pressures are created inside, which result in strong cracks in the wood, which under certain circumstances occur explosively. This temperature gradient from the inside to the outside cannot be influenced quickly enough in the closed chambers.

For this reason, it was not possible to dry wood with larger cross-sections. In addition, this process required high-frequency energy that put the economic viability of high-frequency drying into question. The purpose of the method according to the invention is to eliminate these disadvantages which oppose the use of high frequency for drying.

The method consists in that the wood to be dried is continuously passed through the high-frequency treatment capacitor, which consists of several sections and is located in a heat-insulated tunnel, and the intensity of the high-frequency field is measured such that the wood is in a first capacitor section is initially heated to such an extent that the water in the wood is heated to the boiling point within a maximum of two minutes; in a second condenser section, the high-frequency energy supplied is measured so that it is just sufficient to maintain this temperature,

in order to bring the water in the wood to evaporation and in the next condenser sections the strength of the high frequency field is continuously weakened until the end of the drying process, while at the same time a stream of warm air flows continuously around the wood to be dried during all treatment stages to warm up and maintain the surface. temperature of the wood and for. ongoing from the escaping water vapor lead.

The aim of the invention is thus to measure and control the effect of the high frequency energy, which has to drive the moisture out of the wood, so that no damage to the wood can occur. As a result of the poor thermal conductivity of the wood and as a result of the heat losses on the wood surface, there is a temperature gradient from the inside to the outside, which is reduced or eliminated by the fact that the wood to be dried before or at least simultaneously with the action of the high-frequency energy a hot air flow is set, the temperature of which is suitably above 100 Celsius, and which heats the wood to be dried from the outside.

The moisture content of the hot air flow used can be regulated by known means. The other task of the warm air flow is to absorb the moisture emerging from the wood and remove it, so that the wood surface is always able to absorb the moisture moving from the inside to the outside.

However, none of these processes would guarantee drying that is harmless to the wood, because they cannot be adapted to the internal diffusion resistance in the wood, especially in the case of heavy and denser types of wood.

In order to achieve this and in order to be able to carry out the various treatment stages one after the other in a certain temporal sequence, the wood to be dried is continuously guided through the treatment room designed as a tunnel. Since the speed of a conveyor belt can be regulated as required, it has become possible to adapt the entire drying process to the natural diffusion speed of the different types of wood.

In the method according to the invention, both pre-dried and wet wood fresh from the sawmill with a high moisture content can be dried to the desired final drying state in a single work process, this method, as the test results have already shown, both on all types of coniferous wood can also be used on all types of hardwood.
