Description

  Si l'on se réfère particulièrement à la     fig.    1,  on peut observer que les doublets négatifs 1  et 2 du composant négatif, qui sont de préfé  rence identiques, ont des surfaces cylindriques  extérieures convexes de courbure relativement  faible, représentées respectivement en     r1    et     r4     tournées à     l'opposé    du composant positif, et  des surfaces     cylindriques    extérieures concaves  de courbure relativement forte, représentées  respectivement en     r3    et     r6    tournées vers le com  posant positif ;

  Malgré les limitations imposées, en ce qui  concerne les     corrections,    par les interfaces pla  nes des doublets du système, celui-ci, tel qu'il  est décrit ici, est     hautement        corrigé    pour les       aberrations    sphérique et chromatique, pour la  coma, pour la distorsion et pour la courbure  de champ, particulièrement en ce     qu'il    donne  un champ tangentiel relativement plan dans un  plan perpendiculaire aux génératrices de ces  surfaces cylindriques ;

  The present invention relates to an anamorphic optical system applicable to taking and projecting moving images and also taking photographs, through an anamorphic system, of an object field of relatively large width compared to its height. and obtaining, by this means, an image of the object field in a horizontally compressed form on the normal motion picture film in which the width and height of the images are in the ratio of 4 to 3, then the projection,

   through the same anamorphic system or through a corresponding anamorphic system, of the image compressed in the horizontal direction on the film so as to spread out in the horizontal direction the projected image so that it conforms to the ratio of width at the height of the original object field, whereby, while using motion picture film with normal-sized images, the projected image is relatively wide, or panoramic, desirably and results, accordingly, illusion of width, especially if the projection screen is slightly concave in the horizontal plane.

  The anamorphic optical system according to the invention comprises two chromatically corrected negative and positive cylindrical components, the focal length of the negative component being shorter than the focal length of the positive component, the axial distance between these two components, when the system is focused on infinity, being equal to the difference between their focal lengths, the generatrices of their cylindrical surfaces being parallel, the positive component having only one convex outer face, the negative component comprising two adjacent negative doublets,

    chromatically corrected and each having a convex outer surface opposite the positive component and a concave outer surface facing the positive component. It is characterized in that each of said negative doublets comprises plano-cylindrical elements having their on plane faces turned towards one another, the radius of curvature of the concave surface of each of said negative doublets being between 0.3 and 0.5 of the radius of curvature of its surface. convex and between 0.6 and 0.9 of the radius of curvature of the convex surface of said positive cylindrical component, the axial distance between said negative and positive components, when the system is focused on infinity, being between 1 , 2 and 1.5 times the radius of curvature of the convex surface of the positive component.

  An embodiment of the object of the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing in which FIG. 1 is a perspective view; fig. 2 is a cross section of this system and of a spherical lens giving a real image functionally associated with said system,

    section made by a plane perpendicular to the generatrices of the cylindrical surfaces of the anamorphic system. The anamorphic system shown comprises a frontal negative cylindrical component consisting of two doublets 1 and 2 negative cylinders, chromatically corrected and placed at a small distance from each other,

    and a rear positive cylindrical component 3 constituted by a chromatically corrected positive cylindrical doublet and having the generators of its cylindrical surfaces parallel to those of the cylindrical surfaces of the negative components, the focal length of the negative component being smaller than the focal length of the component positive, the axial distance between the two components, when the system is focused on infinity,

      being equal to the dif ference between their focal lengths.

  The anamorphic system is neutral in its axial plane in which the generators of its cylindrical surfaces are located, so that its image formation is normal in this plane; on the other hand, in the axial plane of the system perpendicular to the generatrices of its cylindrical surfaces, the formation of images by the system with respect to an object plane located, towards the front, beyond the negative component of the system, gives rise to a compression of a relatively large extent of the object field; conversely, forming images from a plane behind the positive component results in smearing and results in a relatively large image extent.

  When using the anamorphic system for the formation of real images, as is the case when photographing or projecting images, the system is combined with a suitable spherical objective, as seen on fig. 2, on which a photographic lens 4 is placed behind the anamorphic system between the positive component 3 and the focal plane 5 of a darkroom for taking images of an object field, represented by a plane 6, located at a distance a certain distance, forward,

   of the anamorphic system, on a film placed in the focal plane of the dark room. When the system is used for image projection, the photographic lens and the darkroom are replaced by an appropriate projection lens and a projector, or lantern, the projection lens being arranged between the component. positive 3 and the plane of the film in the projector, which one supposes represented by the plane 5, for the reproduction of an image of a film of the plane of the film on a screen which is supposed to be re presented by plan 6.

  When the combined system is focused on infinity, both the anamorphic system and the spherical lens are focused on infinity, because the light between the positive element 3 of the anamorphic system and the lens spherical 4 is in collimation. When the combined system is tuned for finite distances, the anamorphic system and the spherical lens are both tuned correspondingly, with the tuning of the anamorphic system being achieved by relative adjustment between the negative components. and positive 1-2 and 3,

   and the focusing of the spherical objective being relative to the plane 5, the positive component 3 being preferably fixed axially with the spherical objective and the negative component 1 - 2 being adjustable relative to the positive component 3 .

  Assuming that you are using the anamorphic system for taking and projecting moving images, and that you are using the normal type of motion picture film comprising images with a ratio of width to height. is 4 to 3, the axial plane of the system perpendicular to the generatrices of the cylindrical surfaces of the system is arranged horizontally, so that when shooting, the vertical dimension of the images of the object field is normal and corresponds to the height of the image of normal motion picture film,

   while the horizontal dimension of the images of the object field is a compression of a relatively large extent of the object field and thus corresponds to the width of the normal cinematographic image; when projecting the compressed image horizontally onto the film, the vertical dimension of the image on the film is normal, while its horizontal dimension is spread out; it follows that the projected image corresponds to the height and width ratio of the original object field and is thus, desirably, of panoramic width. In the particular example described here, the compression or spreading ratio is 2 to 1.

  If we refer particularly to FIG. 1, it can be observed that the negative doublets 1 and 2 of the negative component, which are preferably identical, have convex outer cylindrical surfaces of relatively small curvature, represented respectively at r1 and r4 facing away from the positive component, and concave outer cylindrical surfaces of relatively strong curvature, represented respectively by r3 and r6 facing the positive component;

   the positive component doublet has concave outer cylindrical surfaces of relatively low curvature and convex outer cylindrical surfaces of relatively high curvature, represented respectively by r7 and r6 facing, respectively, towards the negative component and to the opposite thereof, all of these cylindrical surfaces having their generators parallel as described above. Each of these doublets is formed by plan-cylindrical elements whose flat surfaces face one another and are preferably glued to each other,

   the positive and negative elements of negative doublet 1 being designated by Li and L2, respectively, their facing flat surfaces being designated by r2, the positive and negative elements of negative doublet 2 being designated by L3 and L4, respectively, their facing flat surfaces being designated by r5, the negative and positive elements of positive doublet 3 being designated by L5 and L6, respectively,

   and their facing flat surfaces being designated by r8. The axial thicknesses of the elements Lr to L6 are respectively designated by t1 to t6 and the axial spacing between the negative doublets and that of the negative and positive components are respectively designated by s1 and s2.

  A preferred practical example of this embodiment has the characteristics indicated in the following table in which the dimensions are given in millimeters, the refractive indices for the D line and the Abbe numbers being respectively indicated in nDetenv:

<tb> r9- <SEP> 96,18 The negative constituent 1 - 2 comprising two doublets,

   the curvatures of its cylindrical surfaces are reduced compared to those of a component composed of a single doublet, resulting in the reduction of distortion and other aberrations; since the doublets of the system comprising plan-cylindrical elements having their flat surfaces facing each other, the elements are not difficult to fabricate, resulting in lower costs and convenient orientation during fabrication. assembly to bring the generators of their cylindrical surfaces in precise parallelism:

   the system described is thus distinguished from those with which difficulties are encountered in the manufacture of elements whose two surfaces are cylindrical, in which case it is necessary that, during manufacture, the generatrices of the two cylindrical surfaces of each element are kept parallel between them with a small tolerance, for example one minute of arc, so as not to affect the quality of the system.

  Despite the limitations imposed, with regard to corrections, by the plane interfaces of the doublets of the system, the latter, as described here, is highly corrected for spherical and chromatic aberrations, for coma, for distortion and for field curvature, particularly in that it gives a relatively flat tangential field in a plane perpendicular to the generatrices of these cylindrical surfaces;

   in addition to the reduction in the curvatures of the cylindrical surfaces of the negative component resulting from the fact that it consists of two doublets, the following limitations, which apply to the particular example described here, contribute to the correction of the system The radius of curvature of the convex surface of each of the negative doublets (r3 and r6) is between 0.6 and 0.9 of the radius of curvature r3 of the convex surface of the positive component, to obtain a high degree of correction in terms of concerns spherical aberration, comma, and a plane tangential field, but this is no longer the case when the positive component includes two doublets.

  The constringence of the negative element L5 of the positive doublet is not greater than the Abbe number of 36 and the refractive index of the positive element L6 of the positive doublet is not less than 1.635 for the line D; this results in a high degree of chromatic correction for the positive component, together with total, or overall, correction of the system.

  The radius of curvature of the con cave surface of each of the negative doublets (r3 and r6) is between 0.3 and 0.5 of the radius of curvature of its convex surface (r1 and r4) whether the doublets are identical or not, to achieve a high degree of chromatic correction of the negative component, along with total or overall correction of the system.

  The axial distance s, (r6 to r,) between the negative and positive components is between 1.2 and 1.5 times the radius r3 of curvature of the surface convex of the positive doublet when the system is focused on infinity, with a view to obtaining a high degree of satisfactory simultaneous aberration correction, but this is no longer the case when the positive component comprises two doublets .

  The axial thickness t6 of the positive element L6 of the positive doublet is not less than 0.065 of the radius r, 9 of curvature of the convex surface of the element, in order to obtain a suitable marginal thickness of this element , for relatively large openings, without greatly increasing the overall size of the system.
