Jauge

Gauge
The invention relates to a gauge comprising a casing containing a dial and a needle, a rod containing a sensitive element and a flexible torque transmission element coupling the sensitive element to the needle so as to cause the movement of the needle in front of the dial under the effect exerted by the ambient conditions on the sensitive element, and which is characterized in that it comprises a device for coupling the rod with the casing which makes it possible to orient the casing of so as to direct the dial and the needle in any azimuth at will with respect to the axis of the rod as a center and to make it tilt in this orientation position following an arc of the order of 1800,
so as to vary the inclination of the face of the dial and of the needle with respect to the axis of the rod without disturbing the calibration of the gauge.

The gauge shown, which may be a thermometer indicating the temperature or a manometer indicating the pressure, comprises a head 10 (fig. 3) which consists of a circular casing 12 in the form of a bowl forming the rear part of the gauge, on the edge. front of which is screwed a crown 14 for fixing a transparent glass plate 16 of the gauge in front of its front face. A bearing block 18 is fixed in a central opening of the rear cover 12, for example by welding, and comprises portions directed forward in the casing and behind the casing. A dial plate 20, on which is imprinted or otherwise affixed a suitable scale, is affixed to the forward-facing portion of the scope block 18.
This is pierced with an axial hole which forms a bearing substantially at the geometric center of the head and in which the axis 22 of a needle is rotatably mounted and extends at one end forward into the casing so to support a needle 24 which is fixed thereto and is movable relative to the scale of the dial, while the other end of the axis extends backwards and is coupled to a suitable mechanism, described below, which causes it to rotate under the action of a sensitive element 25 housed in a rod 26.
The rod 26 is of tubular shape closed at its lower end by a cover 28 and fixed at its upper end in a rac
threaded cord 30 through which it can be screwed into a threaded hole of a support s (fig. 4 and 5) forming part of the installation with which it is desired to use the gauge. Sensitive element 25 is in the form of a coil which tends to expand or contract with changes in ambient conditions. According to the form shown, it consists of a flat bimetallic coil sensitive to temperature variations and rotating a control shaft 32 fixed on its upper end.
If the gauge is to be used to measure pressure, the bimetallic coil is replaced by a coiled Bourdon tube, sensitive to pressure variations and similarly rotating rod 32. The lower end of the coil is fixed on a stud 34 fixed inside the cover 28, so that the coil cannot turn freely in the rod and therefore the movement of the coil has the effect of rotating the control shaft 32. Depending on the length of the shaft 32, there is one or more spaced guides or bearings 36 inside the rod so as to support the shaft, and at least one of these guides 36 is disposed in the hole in the vicinity of the upper end of the rod. fitting 30.
In order to be able to freely orient the head relative to the rod, the control shaft 32 is coupled to the axis 22 of the needle by a flexible element 38 for transmitting the torque.
This flexible torque transmission element consists of a flat metal wire wound along its axis in the form of a long, freely flexible spring and coupled in rigid form at its ends opposite to the axis 22 and to the shaft 32 by coupling elements. 40, for example by welding the ends of the spring directly to the flat disc-shaped heads which it carries. Since the torque transmission element 38 is flexible in all directions, it is evident that the head 10 and the rod 26 can assume almost any position relative to each other. be without hindering the control coupling between the sensitive element and the needle.
Although it is thus possible to tilt the head at any angle relative to the rod without impeding the transmission of torque from the sensitive element to the needle, the head
must be fixed so as not to rotate in the plane of its dial around the axis of the rod, so as to maintain a fixed relationship between the needle and the scale and consequently its calibration precision. This is achieved by means of an element 42 coupling the head with the rod so as to prevent the head from rotating about the axis of the rod, but to allow it to tilt relative to it. As can be seen, this element 42 consists of a hollow tube in the form of a bellows which is perfectly flexible in the longitudinal direction but resistant to torsion, that is to say rigid from the point of view of torque transmission.
Element 42 is preferably made of stainless steel or other corrosion resistant material and is welded or otherwise fixed at its ends to the bearing block 18 behind the head on the one hand and on the upper end of the fitting 30 on the other hand. Apart from the fact that the bellows tube prevents twisting of the head relative to the rod, it forms a tight seal for the control elements contained in the head and thus protects them against contact with dirt and a corrosive atmosphere, so that these elements can be made, if desired, in less expensive materials, for example copper, which is perfectly suitable for the manufacture of these interior elements but does not resist the corrosive action of acids.
Although the bellows as described is made of metal, it is also conceivable according to the invention to manufacture it from a suitable synthetic material, such as nylon or similar plastics resistant to corrosion, heat and water. moisture and possessing sufficient strength and flexibility to fulfill the necessary conditions.
A variation in the length of the torque transmission element 38 has the effect of rotating one of its ends relative to the other. This obviously results in a parasitic rotational movement of the axis of the needle which affects the accuracy of the gauge. Consequently, in order for the gauge to maintain its accuracy, it is necessary that the length of the torque transmission element 38 remains constant throughout the duration of the angular movement of the head relative to the rod, so that it does not neither contracts nor expands. This result is obtained by means of inextensible elements 44 in the form of two crossed, rigid metal articulated connecting rods (fig. 1, 2 and 4) which fix the head on the fitting. In the simplest form, just two of these connecting rods 44.
But if you want the gauge to be maneuvered more gently and give it a more symmetrical appearance, you can provide four connecting rods.
The connecting rods are fixed and articulated on the head and on the fitting by respective bearing arms 46 and 48. The arm 46 consists of a flat rigid plate pierced with a circular hole and mounted on the portion directed behind the bearing block. 18, on which it is held in place by an elastic washer 50 housed in a groove 52 formed in the block behind the plate. The plate comprises two diametrically opposed lugs 54, directed backwards, pierced with threaded holes in which a screw 56 is screwed which articulates the ends of the connecting rods. Arm 48 consists of a split cylindrical adapter sleeve mounted on the upper portion of fitting 30 and clamped to it by a bolt 57 which screws into tabs 58 at its adjoining ends.
To prevent axial movement of the adapter sleeve on the fitting, the latter has a peripheral groove 60 (FIG. 3) in which the bolt 57 is housed so as to cause part of its shank to penetrate into the groove. Parallel spaced arms 62 run upward from the adapter sleeve and are drilled with holes through which pivot bolts 64 of the lower ends of the connecting rods pass.
The path of movement to be imparted to the head and to the spring is shown schematically in FIG. 7 by the arc MN. We build this path by first drawing a straight line
GJ which corresponds to the axis of the spring 38 in its rectilinear position and the length of which is equal to the total length of the spring. Then we draw a line KJ perpendicular to the line
GJ at point J. Then, choosing arbitrary centers along the line KJ, we draw a series of arcs all starting from point J. These arcs represent the axis of the spring in various bending positions. The spring takes on a circular shape since its two ends are subjected to the action of two equal and opposite bending moments. The spring therefore undergoes the action of a constant bending moment over its entire length and its radius of curvature is constant.
When tilting the head so that the spring bends, the bending moment increases and the radius of curvature decreases.
Consequently, it is expected that the spring follows a curved path whose center of radius of curvature is on the line KJ. Of course, when the spring is on the line JG, the radius of curvature is infinite and the bending moment is zero. The axis of the shaft 22 of the needle must be substantially tangent to each of the arcs drawn from point J.
Consequently, a distance equal to JG from point J in each direction is then determined with two compass points on each arc. The ends of the arcs are designated by a series of points E, F, etc., then, by successive approximations, a radius HG is determined which describes an arc passing through the ends of the arbitrary arcs and which is the arc MN.
To determine the points A and B, we raise perpendiculars to the tangents at the points
E, F and G with the MN arc. The distances of the span axes are plotted on these perpendiculars
Cl-Dl, C2-D2, etc., equal to the spacing of the upper ends of the connecting rods 44. By tracing arcs of short length with points Cl, C2 and C3 as centers and with radii substantially equal to HC3, one note that these arcs meet substantially at point A, which is determined in this way. The point B is determined in the same way. Consequently, the straight lines AC3 and BD3 represent the lengths of the rods sought.
The final operation consists in determining the position of the dotted lines which represent the final orientation of the head and the positions
of span Cl, Dl, etc., by means of the lengths finally determined A C3 and BD3 of the connecting rods and of the centers A and B. This operation is carried out by tracing the circumferences at points E, F and G, then with an equal radius at AC3 and point A as the center, arcs intersecting the circumferences are drawn, thereby determining the final position of points C1, C2 and C3, as well as points Dl, D2 and D3. The dotted lines drawn between the points of intersection indicate the orientation of the plane of the dial which is parallel to these lines.
The perpendiculars to these dotted lines represent the axes of the needle shaft and are substantially tangent to the approximate arcs at points E, F and G. The dotted lines
C1-D1, C2-D2 and C3-D3 do not pass exactly through points E, F and G apart from the aforementioned deviation, but they nevertheless pass close enough for practical applications.
Although it follows from the geometrical construction of the transmission that the center of the face of the instrument follows a slightly elliptical path, the length of the connecting rods and the distance from axis to axis of the bearing point are chosen so as to make very appreciably equal the major and the minor axis of the ellipse. Moreover, given that only about a quarter of the elliptical arc MN is used, it follows that the aforementioned cross transmission makes it possible to achieve a very close approximation of the necessary circular motion.
The holes in the ends of the connecting rods 44 through which pass the bolts 56 and 64 of articulation of the connecting rods on the arms 46 and 58 are not threaded; therefore, after having tightened the bolts in the arms, after having adjusted the position of the head and the rod by rotating the transmission in relation to the rod, the connecting rods can be locked in their position and consequently the head is fixed by compared to the rod. Likewise, the sleeve 48 can be fixed by tightening the bolt 57.
As has already been said, it is possible to have two groups of two connecting rods, which obviously increase the resistance and give a more symmetrical appearance to the gauge, but it must be understood that in practice only two connecting rods are sufficient.
Figs. 8 to 10 represent a variant of the gauge which has the advantage of ensuring precisely the movement of the head relative to the rod, instead of the approximation obtained by the cross transmission described above. In addition, the appearance of the gauge is more symmetrical.
As can be seen, the form of construction of the basic elements of the gauge closely corresponds to that of the embodiment described above. The head 110 consists of a circular envelope 112 on the front face of which a transparent glass plate of the gauge (not shown) is fixed by a crown 114. A bearing block 118 is fixed on the rear wall of the envelope and forms at its inner end a support for a dial plate 120 and a bearing surface for the axis 122 of a needle. The sensitive element (not shown) is housed in the rod 126 which is fixed at its upper end in an adapter fitting 125 which, in turn, is mounted in the upper end of a threaded connection 130 where it is t fixed by a cap nut 127.
The control shaft 132 starting from the sensitive element is rotatably mounted in several spans 136 distributed along the rod 126 and in the passage channel of the adaptation fitting of the rod, and it is coupled with the axis 122 of the needle by a torque transmission element 138 which, as before, consists of a coil spring. The ends of the spring 138 are welded or fixed in any other way on coupling elements 140 fixed respectively on the upper end of the control shaft 132 and on the rear end of the axis 122 of the needle.
To prevent relative rotational movement between the head and the shank, a bellows-shaped member 142, corresponding to that previously described, is brazed or welded at both ends to the bearing block 118 and to a sleeve 143. tight on the upper end of the rod adapter 125.
The above elements are roughly similar in all respects to the gauge described above and have all of their advantages and features. However, the gauge in question differs from that which has already been described by the form of construction of the elements which regulate the angular movement.
of the head with respect to the rod so as to maintain the desired relations between them during the angular movement, that is to say to maintain constant the length of the spring 138 and the axis of the needle tangent to the arc of the spring on the side of the head, whatever its position of curvature relative to its end on the side of the rod.
This result is obtained by replacing the crossed connecting rods by two spaced parallel connecting rods 144 articulated at their opposite ends on the head and on the rod by carrying arms 146 and 148 and by two toothed sectors 147 and 149 meshing between them and carried respectively by the arms. The reach arm
146 consists as 1} previously of a rigid flat plate pierced with a circular hole through which it is mounted on the rearwardly directed portion of the bearing block 118 and comprising spaced parallel tabs 154 directed rearwardly. Semicircular plates 155 are bolted to the legs and protrude rearwardly, parallel to each other and approximately perpendicular to the rear wall of the casing.
Teeth cut in the rear edges of these plates constitute the two aforementioned toothed sectors 147.
Through holes drilled in the plates at the center of the pitch circles of these toothed sectors pass bolts 156 on which the ends of the connecting rods 144 are articulated. The arm 148 also consists, like the arm previously described, of a cylindrical clamping sleeve split and mounted on the upper end of the adapter fitting 125, to which it is clamped by a bolt 157 passing through the legs 158 at their adjoining ends. To prevent axial movement of the adapter sleeve on the adapter fitting, the latter has a peripheral groove 160 and in which the bolt 157 is received so that a portion of its shank enters the groove. Spaced parallel arms 162 point upward from the adapter sleeve.
Teeth are cut in the upper ends of the arms so as to form the two other aforementioned toothed sectors 149. Through holes drilled in the center of the pitch circles of these sectors pass bolts 164 on which are articulated the lower ends of the connecting rods 144.
The center of the pitch circle of the toothed sector 149 coincides with the point H (fig. 7) which is the center of the arc MN described by the end of the spring 138 starting from a bending position 90 "to the left, passing by a rectilinear position and coming into a flexion position 90 "to the right, while its free length remains constant. The center of the pitch circle of the toothed sector 147 is in a position corresponding to that of the end of the side of the head of the spring 138, which must describe the arc
MN (fig. 7). To make this path follow with certainty, a guide device is formed by the two connecting rods 144 whose articulation centers coincide with the centers of the pitch circles of sectors 147 and 149.
As a result, the end of the spring 138 coupled with the axis 122 of the needle is movable along the arc
MN (fig. 7).
The plane of the head 110 must always be substantially perpendicular to the end of the spring 138, whatever the inclination of the head, as indicated graphically in FIG. 7 on which lines Cl-Dl, C2-D2 and
C3-D3 represent a plane parallel to the plane of the head 110 in the three positions shown and must be perpendicular to the respective tangents at points E, F and G. When the head comes from a position parallel to the line Cl-Dl in a position parallel to the line C3-D3, it has turned at an angle of 90 "around a center which followed the arc EG. At the same time, the connecting rods 144 must come from a position coinciding with the line HE in a position identical to the line HG, corresponding to a rotation angle of 60 around the point H.
To achieve this result, the ratio between sectors 149 and 147 must be approximately 2 3.
As in the gauge described above, bolts 156, 157 and 164 serve to secure the head relative to the rod in a chosen position of angular adjustment.
Fig. 6 indicates the various positions that the rod can take relative to the head when it is fixed in a given position or those that the head can take when the rod is fixed in a given position. Instead of representing a single head whose rod follows various directions or a single rod whose head is tilted at different angles, each sketch in the figure represents only one of the positions that can be obtained.
The head being fixed so as to direct the face of its dial forward, the rod as shown in the lower portion of FIG. 6 can point in any azimuth (north, south, east or west), and if the rod is fixed in a vertical position, as indicated by the upper part of your figure, the head can run in an arc of about 1800 from the horizontal.
The essential characteristics of the embodiment and its variant described above consist in the absolute freedom of movement of the head of the gauge relative to the rod, without variation in the length of the coupling torque transmission element. the sensitive element and the axis of the needle, and in maintaining the axis of the needle in a position substantially tangent to the end of the arc described by the element transmitting the torque, whatever the flexion position it occupies.
In addition, the coupling is rigid between the head and the rod and prevents any relative torsion of these elements so as to maintain the precision of the calibration, to form a tight seal which protects them, ensures them a longer resistance to l wear and greater precision, and to achieve a gauge of simple construction, robust, efficient and satisfactory in appearance.
The gauges described above are specially intended to indicate temperature and pressure and have an ordinary circular head with dial and needle movable on an axis, but it should be understood that the invention is not limited to the application. for which the gauge is used, but that it applies equally well and also usefully to gauges which have a head which, so that the indications it gives are easy to read, must be in a particular position and whose element sensitive must be in a particular angular position relative to the head to allow it to reach the fluid to be measured.
