Description

Apparatus for crimping a thermoplastic yarn The present invention relates to an apparatus for crimping a thermoplastic yarn.

It has long been understood that it would be extremely interesting to be able to modify the physical appearance or the characteristics of synthetic yarns, so that they resemble more crimped or wavy yarns made up of natural fibers, and of their appearance. also give an elasticity that does not have the son of natural material. To achieve these goals, it has been proposed to heat stabilize a high twist yarn so that it substantially retains its helical configuration. It has also been suggested that the yarn forming material be forced between meshing graining so that the filaments solidify with the desired configuration.

Likewise, it has been proposed to pass continuous filaments between meshing gears in the presence of heat and softening agents. On the other hand, numerous chemical treatments aimed at producing crimped yarns have also been proposed. Continuous filaments have also been passed, in the form of tow, between embossing wheels or rolls and in the presence of heat, through a tow chamber, with the aim of crimping or waving them.

Finally, consideration has also been given to drawing continuous filaments at ambient temperature on a blunt cutting blade or other deformation tool in order to achieve the desired crimp. The foregoing known devices are unsatisfactory because they do not produce a crimped yarn having the elasticity and texture desired to give the finished product softness to the touch. Some of these devices are expensive, others can only provide relatively low output.

On the other hand, the crimping produced in the wire by means of some of the older devices, for example meshing gears or crimping rollers in a stuffing box, is usually only temporary to the point that the wire must be collected and handled without being able to apply any appreciable tension to it.

Under these conditions, it is necessary to handle the yarn in the form of loosely wound skeins; this characteristic cannot be accepted by industrialists, since it requires special care and tools and causes a high percentage of losses as a result of tangles, entanglements, etc.

The waving action obtained by passing the yarn at room temperature over a dull blade or other deforming tool is barely sufficient to change the surface effect and only gives the yarn an elasticity of. a very low amplitude.

The apparatus forming the subject of the invention, comprising a source of wire, a sharp edge, a winding device spaced from this edge and intended to collect the wire, and a means for pulling the wire out of the source and for passing it over said ridge to the winding device, is characterized by a device for heating the moving yarn downstream and in proximity to said ridge. The drawing shows, by way of example, two embodiments of the apparatus according to the invention.

Fig. 1 is a schematic view of the first embodiment.

The fi-. 2 is a schematic view of the second embodiment.

Fig. 3 is a view, on a large scale, of a detail used in these two embodiments. The apparatus shown in FIG. 1 is of the hot blade type. Reference numeral 13 denotes an ordinary yarn feed winding, such as a bobbin, spool or the like. A thermoplastic wire Y unwinds from the spool 13 and passes through a positive tension device 17, consisting of a series of discs subjected to springs.

On leaving the tension device, the yarn Y moves upwards, crosses one side of a blade 19, and passes around the tapered edge 21 of the blade 19 and over this edge at an acute angle; from there, the wire descends to a guide 23 for shooting abou a device 25 intended to collect it. This device 25 comprises a cheek reel 27 driven by a roller 29 covered with cork.

Around the blade 19 are wound several turns of an electric heating wire 35, which is supplied with electric current by conductors 33, from a variable transformer 31, connected to any source. electrical energy (not shown) by conductors 34. Sheets 37 of a dielectric material, for example mica, are placed between the blade and the heating wire.

Heat is supplied to the Y wire by convection and radiation, as the yarn passes the side of the blade, and only by conduction as it travels over the cutting edge of the blade, so that the Y wire lies in a suitable plastic condition and can easily respond to the action of the blade in the time interval it passes over the tapered edge thereof.

The apparatus described above is particularly well suited to be associated with torsion machines, such as the Atwood L 100 machine. When such a machine is used, the blades can be supported by a member crossing the distance between the elements. verticals of the torsion frame, the wire being collected on the ordinary collecting device provided on the twist.

The apparatus shown in fi-. 2 is of the cold blade type. It comprises two in bearings 41 arranged one close to the other on a frame, not shown. The Y 'yarns coming from the windings 41 unwind and separately pass through the eyelets of their pigtail guides 45, then pass through two tension devices 47, then pass over the slightly curved surface of a heating element 49 , around the tapered edge of a blade 51 and on this edge by folding back at an acute angle, and finally arrive at a guide member 53. Before this point, the strands of wire were kept apart one by one. the other.

On the contrary, these two strands are left to merge together when they pass through the guide member 53; these two strands then move through driven feed rollers 55, arrive in a single guide member 57, and finally descend to a torsion pin 59, like those found on a mill. or on a spinning machine; this spindle is rotated by ordinary means, not shown.

The blade 51 is separated from the heating element 49 by a short distance equal for example to 1.6 mm by means of clamps 61, the tapered edge 50 of the blade 51 extending a short distance, for example equal to 3.2mm beyond the top edge of the heating element. It can thus be seen that the blade is not used especially as a heating element, unlike the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, but is kept slightly away from a separate heating element, and therefore is at a lower temperature than that of the heating element, hence its name cold blade .

The heating element 49 is preferably made of a strip of stainless steel, which has been bent to a radius of curvature of about 10 cm so as to present a slightly curved surface to the wire. This steel strip is connected in series with a variable transformer 63 by electrical conductors 65; energy is supplied to the transformer from any source (not shown) and via conductors 67.

Although the use of a separate heating element and a cold blade has been shown in combination with a wringer or a spinning machine, it is evident that this use is not limited to this particular case, since 'it has the same interest in the embodiment shown in FIG. 1. The description of the cold blade type apparatus, acting so multaneously on two moving strands of wire, should not be regarded as limiting the application of this apparatus to the case of two wires, as it is obvious that the device would be just as useful for a single strand of wire.

The cold blade apparatus can be adapted for multi-position operation. In such an apparatus, a single heating strip of considerable length is used for a large number of blades which are stapled to this strip at certain intervals along it, separate means for collecting the wire being disposed correspondingly. with each blade. It is possible to maintain precise control of the temperature of the web and a substantially uniform heat distribution along it. With adequate insulation, the heat losses between the different positions are not prohibitive.

Fig. 3 is a detailed view on a large scale of the edge of the blade and of the contour wire nding this edge; it shows the path followed by the wire when the latter arrives at the edge of the blade and then moves away from it, both in one and the other of the two devices described above. In this figure, a is the angle at which the wire arrives at the edge of the blade and (3 is the angle at which it leaves this edge. These angles can vary considerably, although they are preferably included. within a certain margin.

The principle according to which the devices described act to curl thermoplastic threads is not fully clarified. It appears that several distinct actions or several combinations of these actions cooperate to produce satisfactory crimping.

The first of these actions is the bending of a moving strand of a plasticized wire taking place progressively over a very small radius of curvature, the wire cooling down as it moves away from the wire. place of bending so that it tends to retain the shape given by bending. The second action is that of a blade applied along an unheated wire, this action being analogous on the whole to a well-known phenomenon, that is to say to progressive bending, carried out on the blade of a knife,

of a certain length of yarn or the like in order to produce a pronounced loop. It is believed that the explanation for this phenomenon lies in the fact that, while the material is folded over the edge of the blade, the side of the material which is furthest from that edge is stretched longitudinally beyond the edge. elastic so that matter cannot return to its original state, but on the contrary remains in its state of differential tension. Since one side of the material is longer than the other,

the material tends to take the form of a loop or a coil.

The third action is the deformation that the fiber takes from its normal section to temporarily unbalance the internal stresses of the various filaments. When the wire, or at least a peripheral layer of it, is in the plastic state at the time of deformation, the molecules can move enough to allow for stress equalization, but retaining the new shape, it is that is, the deformation.

Thus, this latter form is more or less retained by the polymer, when the latter cools to its normal crystalline state, and the material then tends to take this form when it can. On the contrary, in the case where the polymer is not in the plastic state during the treatment, it tends to return to its original state, that is to say to its cold flow state, so to equalize the constraints.

This probably explains the fact that crimping of a temporary nature can be achieved by treatment at room temperature, but it is only when the fiber or part thereof is in the plastic state that crimping acquires. a satisfactory degree of permanence and a large amplitude.

It was observed that the individual filaments, after being pulled, in a partially softened state, over the tapered surface, deformed to some extent in their cross section.

When it has been partially released, the wire which has passed through the crimping apparatus disassembles itself into a series of loops or turns the length, pitch and diameter of which vary at random.

Let us indicate, by way of example, that the speed of passage of the thread in the apparatus can be 40 m / min, that the tension of the thread between the blade and the feed rollers can be between 4 and 10 g , that the temperature of the blade can reach 240o, C and that the wire can make with the blade an angle of 300 when coming towards it and of 5o when leaving it.

The blade used in the apparatus described may be a razor blade. However, it has been observed that such a blade, as it is sold commercially, was not satisfactory for the treatment in question, because it had a tendency to cut into and damage the wire. It therefore had to be lightly polished before using it. The extent to which the blade needs to be modified will depend on the nature of the crimp desired and to some degree on other processing conditions.

It has been found, however, that an adequate degree of crimping can be obtained by subjecting the blade to eight or ten paces of a strip of a very fine abrasive material, for example red polish, or ac tion of such a strip until the radius of curvature of the cutting edge is approximately between 0.002 and 0.01 mm. When we pass this margin, we can obtain the curling but its intensity is reduced.
