à partir d'une position déterminée dans laquelle le centre de gravité du palier flottant est situé verticalement au- dessous du centre commun du gyrostat et du palier flottant; des moyens qui limitent le dépla cement angulaire du palier flottant par rapport au palier fixe, à partir de ladite position déter minée, dans toutes les directions;
des moyens qui assujettissent le palier flottant à l'axe de giration du gyrostat en lui permettant néanmoins de se déplacer librement par rapport à cet axe en pivotant autour d'un axe qui lui est perpendiculaire, qui est aussi perpendiculaire à l'axe commun des deux calottes du palier flottant et qui passe par le centre géométrique commun du gyrostat et du palier flottant;
La fig. 1 est une coupe verticale longitu dinale du gyroscope, un couvercle à miroir étant aussi représenté en traits mixtes dans la position relevée à 45 , de service; le gyrostat n'est pas montré en coupe; la fig. 2 est une vue sur l'intérieur du cous sinet inférieur du palier fixe que comprend le gyroscope, à une plus petite échelle; la fig. 3, montre à la même échelle que la fig. 2, une vue sur l'intérieur de la calotte infé rieure du palier flottant; la fig. 4 est une coupe horizontale suivant la ligne IV-IV de la fig. 1;
la fig. 5 est une coupe horizontale suivant la ligne V-V de la fig. 1, le gyrostat étant supposé enlevé; la fig. 6 est, dans sa moitié supérieure, une coupe transversale suivant la ligne VI-VI de la fig. 1 et, dans sa moitié inférieure, une repré sentation schématique d'une partie d'un dispo sitif de commande du pilotage automatique d'un avion; la fig. 7 est une vue de dessus du gyroscope, le couvercle-miroir étant supposé enlevé; la fig. 8 est une vue en élévation du gyroscope à une plus petite échelle que les fig. 1 et 4 à 6;
la fig. 9 montre dans une coupe horizontale partielle qui pourrait être prise suivant la ligne IV-IV de la fig. 1, une variante de certains moyens d'assujetissement du palier flottant à l'axe de giration du gyrostat; la fig. 10 montre cette variante dans une vue partielle sur l'intérieur du palier flottant dans la direction de la flèche X de la fig. 9;
Universal gyroscope The present invention relates to a universal gyroscope (which means that it constitutes an artificial horizon and a direction gyroscope), of the known type whose gyrostat, of spherical exterior shape, is supported and propelled by a fluid, for example by air.
During numerous systematic tests carried out on gyroscopes of this type in which the gyrostat rotates in a fluid bearing fixed to the housing of the gyroscope and consisting mainly of two juxtaposed spherical caps between which there is an annular space collecting the air used at the temptation and the propulsion of the gyrostat, it was observed that two influences act on the gyrostat and modify its position. The first is that the axis of gyration very slowly takes a preferred position in which it is perpendicular to the axis passing through the tops of the two caps of the bearing. The second means that the axis of gyration is constantly oriented in the same direction with respect to the bearing; it is in this preferred orientation that the gyrostat takes its greatest speed.
Advantageously, advantage is taken of these influences in the gyroscope according to the present invention, which is characterized in that it comprises: a bearing, an upper part of which is transparent and which is fixed to a housing of the gyroscope; a floating bearing composed of two juxtaposed hemispherical caps, the center of gravity of which, located on the common axis of the two caps, is offset with respect to the center of the sphere which they define, this floating bearing being supported by said fluid in said fixed bearing so as to be able to move angularly in any direction with respect to it,
from a determined position in which the center of gravity of the floating bearing is located vertically below the common center of the gyrostat and the floating bearing; means which limit the angular displacement of the floating bearing relative to the fixed bearing, from said determined position, in all directions;
means which subject the floating bearing to the axis of gyration of the gyrostat while nevertheless allowing it to move freely with respect to this axis by pivoting about an axis which is perpendicular to it, which is also perpendicular to the common axis of the two caps of the floating bearing and which passes through the common geometric center of the gyrostat and of the floating bearing;
a mark on the equator of the gyrostat, visible through the transparent upper part of the fixed bearing and the upper cap, also transparent, of the floating bearing, and indicator means carried by parts integral with the housing and whose displacements relative to the The equator of the gyrostat indicates the variations of the position of the housing relative to the axis of gyration of the gyrostat.
In a gyroscope thus arranged, the influences mentioned above do not exert any disturbing action sui; the position of the gyro axis of gyration, if the floating bearing is placed in its preferred position with respect to the gyro axis and if it is subjected, in this position, to the gyro axis of gyro .
The currents coming from the air supply channels from the fixed bearing to the floating bearing can be neutralized by modifying the passage sections of the aforementioned channels.
As the floating bearing can move at an angle in any direction in relation to the fixed bearing, the slight transverse and longitudinal swayings made by the aircraft during flight also have no effect on the position of the aircraft. gyro stat gyration axis. On the other hand, if the plane makes a long trip, during which its terrestrial latitude changes, gravity acts on the floating level whose center of gravity is located below its geometric center and the vertical axis of said level will constantly merge. with the vertical of the place of flight; the gyro axis of gyro will thus remain perpendicular to this same vertical, which constitutes a great advantage of this gyroscope.
In acrobatic flight, the floating bearing will be more or less driven but the resulting disturbing action will be practically negligible due to the rapidity and short duration of the movements of the airplane.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example and in part schematically, one embodiment of the gyroscope according to the invention and two variants of a detail of this embodiment.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of the gyroscope, a mirror cover also being shown in phantom in the position raised at 45, in service; the gyrostat is not shown in section; fig. 2 is a view of the inside of the lower neck of the fixed bearing that the gyroscope comprises, on a smaller scale; fig. 3, shows on the same scale as FIG. 2, a view of the interior of the lower cap of the floating bearing; fig. 4 is a horizontal section along the line IV-IV of FIG. 1;

fig. 9 shows in a partial horizontal section which could be taken along the line IV-IV of FIG. 1, a variant of certain means of subjecting the floating bearing to the axis of gyration of the gyrostat; fig. 10 shows this variant in a partial view of the interior of the floating bearing in the direction of the arrow X of FIG. 9;
fig. 11 is a partial vertical section along the line XI-XI of FIG. 10, and fig. 12 is a partial horizontal section similar to FIG. 9, of a second variant of the means for securing the floating bearing to the axis of gyration of the gyrostat.
The gyroscope shown in fig. 1 to 8 of the drawing comprises a housing 1 which has the general shape of a pot and against a flat vertical part of the side wall of which a housing 2 of a turbocharger is tightly fixed by means of screws 3. In this housing the shaft 4 of an electric motor 5 is journalled which serves to drive a paddle wheel 6 of the turbocharger in rotation.
The housing 1 has a central vertical bore 7 contiguous at its lower end to a horizontal annular shoulder 8. At mid-height is a peripheral groove 9 constricted, but not interrupted by two protuberances 10. This groove 9 communicates with the central part of the housing. turbocharger 2, 6 through a passage 11 and with approximately air passing through a passage 12 formed in the housing 1, and two filters or screens 13 with which a window 14 pivotally mounted on the housing is equipped for a purpose which will be described below. The openings 15 are only intended to lighten the housing 1.
On the other hand, two flares 16, located one above and the other below the groove 9 and the passage 11, are connected by holes 17 with the peripheral part of the interior of the compressor housing 2 and receive blows the air compressed by the paddle wheel 6.
On the annular shoulder 8 bears, by a peripheral rim 18, one of two covers 19 in the general shape of a spherical cap which comprises a fixed bearing which further comprises two rings 20 and two bearings 21, 21 'which also have each in the form of a spherical cap. The two cover caps 19 and the two rings 20 stored between the flanges 18 of these covers are fitted in the bore 7 and held in place by a ring 22 fixed to the housing by three screws 23. Each of the bearings 21, 21 'is supported on one of the rings 20 and is fitted and centered in the rim 18 of the corresponding cover 19.
A hollow space 24 in the form of a spherical cap is formed in each cover-pad assembly and connected with the corresponding flare 16 by a series of radial holes 25 and an outer peripheral groove 26 presented by each flange 18. Each of the net pads 21, 21 'has in its interior surface a circular series (see FIG. 2) of recesses 27, the depth of which is greatly exaggerated in FIG. 1 is about 0.1 mm (the diameter of the inner spherical surface being for example 43 mm). Each of these clearances 27 is connected, at its end closest to the common axis of the two bearings, with one of the spaces 24, for distributing compressed air, by a hole 28 fitted with a nozzle 29.
The two bearings 21, 21 'and the two rings 20 all cooperate together to sustain, by means of the compressed air at an absolute pressure of about 1.3 kg / cm2 which rushes into the chambers 27, a floating bearing formed by two hemispherical caps 30, 30 '. The lift air is collected in two groove portions 31 formed in the inner spherical surface of the rings 20 and escapes therefrom through grooves or radial passages 32 made in the reciprocal contact surfaces of the rings 20, to s' then flow through groove 9 and passage 11 towards the presser turbocom.
The caps 30, 30 'are hemispherical; the lower cap is made of metal, while the upper cap 30 is made of transparent material, for example polystyrene, as are the bearings 21, 21 'and the covers 19 of the fixed bearing. The lower pad 21 'and the lower cover 19 could be made of metal. The lower cap 30 'is made of metal because the center of gravity of the floating bearing must be located below the geometric center of the hollow sphere formed by the floating bearing, in the vertical of. location at which the aircraft equipped with the gyroscope is flying.
It is provided at its center with a pin 33 whose head protrudes into a recess 34 hollowed out in the central part of the lower bearing 21 'and furnished with an elastic ring 35. The pin 33 anchored in the floating bearing and the ring 35 encircling the recess 34 provide means which limit the angle at which the floating bearing can move in any direction relative to the fixed bearing.
These means are necessary because radial passages 36 serving for the exhaust of air from a groove 57 formed inside the floating bearing must constantly remain open on the groove portions 31. These passages 36 are between pairs. heels 37, 38 by which the two caps fit into each other.
The floating bearing 30, 30 'serves to support a gyrostat, of spherical exterior shape, by means of compressed air which passes from the chambers 27 into countersinks 39, provided in a number equal to that of the chambers in the interior surface. of each of the caps 30, 30 ', through a hole 40 provided at the end close to the common axis of the two caps, of each countersink. Each of these holes 40 is lined with a nozzle 41 whose flow section is smaller than that of the nozzles 29.
The gyrostat is made up of two juxtaposed coaxial rings 42, 43 which are tightened, by means of four screws 44 and four threaded sleeves 45, against an equatorial ring 46, leaving between them a free space 48, and two identical caps 49 notched on the rings 42 resp. 43. The outer peripherical surface of the ring 46 is blackened by oxidation to mark the equator of the gyrostat.
The outer surfaces of the two caps 49 are dyed in two different colors (for example red and blue) which are found in the two halves of a circle 50 marked on the surface exposed upwards, of the ring 22 ; this surface also bears a circular graduation 51, the whole so that the gyroscope can be read like the known gyroscopes, in particular the lateral deviations. The number 15 indicates for example 1500 lateral deviation. The horizon can be observed by comparing the equator marked by the black surface of the ring 46 with an index line 52 marked in the outer surface of the upper pad 21. These readings are possible thanks to the transparency of the upper cover 19, of the pad. upper 21 and the upper cap 30.
It is made easier for the pilot whose eye is symbolized at 53 in FIG. 1, by a mirror 54 fixed to the inner side of a cover 55 which is pivoted on a pin 56 fixed to the housing 1 and which during service is kept raised at 45 by means not shown.
In the median plane of the equatorial ring 46 of the gyrostat are made, at 900 one from the other, four holes 58 inclined at 450 (fig. 6) which in a way constitute cubages on which a part of the compressed air which passes through the holes 40 of the floating bearing 30, 30 ', giving the gyrostat a speed of rotation which exceeds 10,000 revolutions / minute. The air which rushes into each of the holes 58 escapes when this same hole passes in front of the groove 57.
The air of lift and propulsion of the gyrostat probably also causes the effect, mentioned at the beginning of this description, by which the axis of gyration of the gyro stat, which is obviously the common axis of the parts 42, 43, 46 , 49, gradually comes to be placed in the equatorial plane of the floating bearing 30, 30 ', which plane in FIG. 1 is indicated by the line IV-IV and which during normal flight is horizontal, that is to say perpendicular to the vertical of the place.
To eliminate an influence of lateral deviations (hence movements of the housing and the fixed bearing around the vertical axis) on the gyrostat, and also for the purpose of using the gy roscope for autopilot as described below , the gyroscope comprises means which subject the floating bearing to the axis of gyration of the gyrostat while nevertheless allowing it to move freely with respect to this axis by rotating around an axis which is perpendicular to it, which is also perpendicular to the common axis of the two caps and which passes through the common geometric center of the gyrostat and the floating bearing.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 8, these means comprise on the one hand the equatorial ring 46, made of soft iron, of the gyrostat, and on the other hand, two permanent magnets 59 which are embedded in two of the six heels 38 of the lower cap 30 'of the bearing floating, diametrically opposed. The axes of these magnets coincide with the transverse axis, perpendicular to the common axis of the two caps and passing through the center of the floating bearing. The opposite ends of these magnets are weakly conical. The magnetic attraction which they exert on the ring 46, which acts as a mature artery, causes the floating bearing to be subject to the axis of gyration in the manner indicated above.
In order to understand the arrangements relating to automatic piloting, it must be assumed that during flight in the desired direction the moving parts occupy the positions shown in FIGS. 1 and 4 to 8.
An elastic membrane 60 is clamped by its edge between a flange 61 provided on the lower side of the housing 1 and a flange 62 of a cover 63, by means of screws 64. The interior spaces 65, 66 located on either side of the membrane 60 are supplied with compressed air by the turbocharger 2,6 through a nozzle 67 and through channels 68, 69. The space 66 is further connected by channels 70 of the housing and a channel 71 formed between the rings 20, with a countersink or narrow slot 72 made in these rings. The space 65 is similarly connected by channels 73, 74, 75 with a slot or countersink 76 diametrically opposed to 72.
At the center of the membrane 60 is fixed the rod 77 of the movable member of a valve of the slide type of a well-known hydraulic control device which comprises, apart from the cylinder 78 of this valve, a pipe 79 d oil supply from a pump, return lines 80 and lines 81 connecting the valve with a servomotor, not shown, for actuating the aircraft rudder. Each of the orifices 72, 76 cooperates with a groove 82 resp. 83 of the floating bearing like a valve. (In the example shown, the outer ends of the magnets each have a semi-circular clearance forming part of this groove).
The orifices 72, 76 have a sufficiently large height so that the operation is not influenced by angular movements of the fixed bearing relative to the floating bearing in the plane of FIG. 6. If, on the other hand, the airplane makes for example a lateral deviation which results in an angular movement in the direction of clockwise in the plane of FIG. 4, of the housing 1 with the rings 20 of the fixed bearing and with the orifices 72, 76, relative to the floating bearing 30, 30 'secured to the axis of gyration, which does not move, of the gyrostat, the compressed air can continue to flow through valve 72, 82, but can no longer flow through valve 76, 83.
The compressed air will therefore not accumulate in the space 66 which is in communication with the open valve 72, 82. But it will accumulate in the space 65 which is in communication with the closed valve 76, 83. Consequently, the membrane 60, subjected to the pressure difference which occurs, lifts the movable member 77 of the control valve of the rudder booster which is then moved in a known manner to put the airplane back in the desired direction of flight. The operation is similar during a lateral deflection in the opposite direction, except that in this case the valve 76, 83 remains open, while the valve 72, 82 is closed and the diaphragm lowers the member 77.
The air which flows through the open valve mixes with the lift air in the groove 31. It therefore circulates, like this lift and propulsion air of the gyrostat, in a closed circuit.
It should be noted here that the membrane box 60 could constitute a separate assembly from the box, the channels 68, 69, 70, 74 then being replaced by pipes. In the hydraulic control device which has just been described, it is only the valves 72, 82 and 76, 83 formed partly in the fixed bearing, partly in the floating bearing, which constitute a new feature.
To start the gyroscope, the pilot engages a switch placed in the supply circuit of the electric motor 5. The turbocharger 2,6 then delivers the compressed air which is used for the lift of the floating bearing, the lift and the lift. propulsion of the gyrostat as well as the automatic pilot control. As soon as the gyrostat turns at its operating speed, which is the case after approximately two minutes, the window 14 is lowered which is normally retained by a mechanism = ball 84 and spring 85 in the position shown in the drawing. The pilot then advances the point of a wooden dowel through the opening 12 of the housing, one of the openings 32 of the fixed bearing and one of the openings 36 of the floating bearing, against the gyrostat.
One of the poles of the gyrostat will automatically be placed in juxtaposition with the point of the ankle lightly pressed on the gyrostat. One can thus give to the axis of gyration of the gyrostat the desired orientation (what we call, measuring the gyrostat in the heading) either at the start, or at any time during the flight.
The opening 12 is wide enough to allow the axis of gyration to be oriented in such a way that the wooden dowel can be removed and reintroduced in a direction offset by 900 and resting it on the equatorial ring 46 with a view to brake the gyrostat which must be stopped before cutting the power supply to the motor 5.
In the case of securing the gyrostat to the floating bearing, by pins, it suffices to put the gyrostat in the cap, to slowly and horizontally rotate the floating bearing by acting on one or other of the heels 38.
When the airplane is flying horizontally, the line 52 is superimposed on the black band or mark which constitutes the outer surface of the equatorial ring 46 of the gyrostat. If the airplane descends, line 52 moves to the left (fig. 1). In the mirror 54 which moves with this line, the image of the equatorial circle 46 is then an arc of an ellipse situated above the image of the line 52 which will always be a straight line. For the pilot, the horizon rises: To read the lateral deviations of the plane, the pilot compares the position of the equatorial circle 46 with the circular graduated scale 51 and also the colors of the two caps 49 with the colors in the halves of the circle 50. If this last comparison could not be made, the pilot would risk flying opposite the desired direction.
The swings of the order of + 5 that an airplane makes during normal flight do not influence the gyrostat in any way, given that the fixed bearing can move from this angle with respect to the floating bearing without the ring 35 coming into contact with the protruding head of the ankle 33.
Two variants of the means for securing the floating bearing to the axis of gyration of the gyrostat will be described below.
The first variant is shown in FIGS. 9, 10 and 11. FIG. 9 shows only one of the rings 20 of the unmodified fixed bearing as well as the floating bearing and the gyrostat slightly modified as follows: The permanent magnets 59 are left out.
In a bore made in the center of each cap 149 of the gyrostat is planted a nozzle 86 blowing part of the propulsion air which has entered the gyrostat through the holes 58, against the different side flanks 87a of a groove 87 made following a vertical plane on the entire perimeter of the inner surface of the floating bearing 130, <B> 130 '</B> whose heels 137, 138 and openings 136 sound a little differently distributed and whose groove 157 is subdivided into two portions so that it does not cut the groove 87. The air blown in this groove 87 escapes by passing through the slot 88 and the hole 89 and mixes in the groove 31 with the air which was used for the lift of the movable bearing.
The second variant, shown in FIG. 12, is simpler than the first, although it differs little from it. In the hole of each of the members 86, which no longer play the role of nozzles, is planted a cylindrical pin 90 which engages with play in a groove 187 which differs from the groove 87 only by the fact that its lateral sides are parallel to each other.
It is easy to see that in these two variants the floating bearing is also subject to the axis of gyration of the gyrostat, but can nevertheless move freely with respect to this axis by pivoting around an axis which is perpendicular to it, which is also perpendicular to the common axis of the two caps forming the floating bearing and which passes through the common geometric center of the floating bearing and of the gyrostat.
