Description

   Puisqu'il est essentiel  dans un tel procédé de     faire    passer un cou  rant très intense à travers le métal du tube  afin de chauffer rapidement la masse entière  de celui-ci, il est également nécessaire     d7appli-          quer    les galets de contact avec une forte pres  sion contre le tube afin d'assurer un bon  contact électrique ; le tube d'acier est capable  dans la plupart des cas de résister à une     telle     pression ;

  La présente invention permet d'éviter les  difficultés que présentent les deux procédés  décrits ci-dessus. Le procédé selon l'inven  tion pour souder ensemble les bords d'une  fente longitudinale d'un tube métallique, con  siste à faire avancer le tube longitudinalement  tout en lui appliquant une pression pour  fermer la fente dans une zone     déterminée    où  s'opère la soudure, et à     chauffer    les bords de  la fentea de manière à porter cette zone à la  température de soudure ;

Method for welding a metal tube and device for implementing this method The present invention relates to a method for welding a metal tube and a device for implementing this method.

Methods of welding metal tubes are already known which consist in continuously advancing a tube comprising a slot along a generatrix, in then subjecting this tube to heating and to a pressure exerted by rollers in such a manner. to close the slot and to weld the two edges of the latter to each other.

It has been in common use heretofore, in the application of this process to the welding of steel tubes, to weld the edges of the slot by an electric resistance heater; an intense electric current was applied by using contacts formed by copper rollers, which strongly press the metal of the tube on each side of the slot, so that the current passes from one of these rollers to the other roller directly through the slot at the location of the weld point, and also circumferentially around it, through the metal of the tube.

We generally used a native alternating current with a frequency between approximately 60 and 180 cycles, or sometimes reaching 300 cycles in the case where the tube was advancing rapidly and where it was desired to avoid appreciable effects of the current pulsations on the structure. welding.

   Since it is essential in such a process to pass a very intense current through the metal of the tube in order to quickly heat the entire mass of the tube, it is also necessary to apply the contact rollers with a strong pressure. Zion against the tube to ensure good electrical contact; the steel tube is able in most cases to withstand such pressure;

on the other hand, if the tube is made of a softer non-ferrous metal, for example aluminum, or has thin walls, it is not possible to easily apply sufficient pressure by the rollers to ensure the necessary good contact with the tube without risking distort it. Accordingly, attempts have been made to weld thin-walled tubes or tubes made of relatively soft metals to use induction heating, for example by surrounding the moving tube with an induction heating coil. , at a place immediately preceding the weld area.

However, it is difficult to induce by this process in the tube a current sufficient to heat it rapidly. especially if the tube is of a non-magnetic metal, because the part constituting the tube is a cylinder open along a generator, and also because there must be an appreciable radial distance between the heating coil and the tube so as to provide sufficient mechanical play to move the tube at high speed.

This process of inductively heating the tube by surrounding it with a coil has the disadvantage that a fairly significant heating occurs in the walls of the tube, including the parts opposite the slot.

  The present invention avoids the difficulties presented by the two methods described above. The method according to the invention for welding together the edges of a longitudinal slot of a metal tube, consists in advancing the tube longitudinally while applying pressure to it to close the slot in a determined zone where the cutting takes place. welding, and heating the edges of the slot  a  so as to bring this area to the welding temperature;

it is characterized by the fact that this heating is carried out by supplying the tube with a high frequency electric current by applying to the tube the terminals of opposite polarities of a current source at places located in the vicinity of each of the two edges of the slot and in front of said weld zone, this current having a frequency of at least about 50,000 cycles per second, so that the greater part of this current follows the path of lowest impedance offered to it in the tube and passes along the edges of the slot to the weld area, the heating effect of this current being thus concentrated in the edges of the slot between the places where the current is applied to the tube and the weld area.

The device for implementing the method defined above comprises means for advancing the tube longitudinally and for passing it between means intended to apply pressure to the tube in order to close the slot in the weld zone, means to heat the edges of the slot so as to bring the weld zone to the weld temperature, and is characterized by the fact that it comprises electrodes intended to be brought into contact with the tube at places situated in the vicinity of each of the edges of the slot and in front of the weld area, and means for applying a high frequency electric current to said electrodes, the frequency of which is at least about 50,000 cycles per second.

The appended drawings illustrate, by way of examples, some implementations of the process according to the invention.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the essential parts of a first embodiment of the device for carrying out the method, showing the position of a certain length of tube in progress during the welding.

Figs. 2 to 5 show in perspective other arrangements of the contacts of this device. If we now consider in detail FIG. 1 shows at 10 a tube advancing continuously from a device which has given a flat metal strip the shape of a tube having a slot 11. The device used to form such a tube, whose slot 11 is limited by two marginal and opposite surfaces, rectified and shiny, is not described and not shown in the drawing. This device may be of one of the types commonly used until now to form such tubes.

The edges of the slot 11 are brought into contact with each other at point 12 and welded during the advance of the tube, thanks to the action of the opposing pressure rollers 13 and 14, which can be constructed and actuated. in the same way as in the various well-known machines for welding tubes.

Two contacts 15 and 16, separated by an insulating layer 17 capable of withstanding high temperatures, are mounted on a support so as to be able to be engaged respectively by sliding between the opposite marginal surfaces 18, 19 of the slot 11. These contacts can be formed by metal alloys capable of withstanding high temperatures without corroding and resisting abrasion. The contacts 15, 16 are respectively connected in a removable manner, by means of the screws 20, to conducting bars 21, 22, made of copper or another metal which is a good conductor of electricity.

These conductive bars are connected to a high frequency current source, for example at the terminals of a transformer capable of transforming the current supplied by a high voltage and high frequency source into an intense current at low voltage and high frequency. , preferably between 300,000 and 500,000 cycles per second. A much higher frequency can be used, if desired, up to several million cycles per second, but a frequency of about 400,000 cycles per second is largely sufficient in common cases.

The intensity of the current which is passed through the circuit of the contacts 15, 16 can vary between very different limits, according to the dimensions and the thickness of the tube, and according to the speed of its longitudinal displacement; the quantity of heat applied naturally increases in proportion to the increase in the speed of the tube, and this quantity of heat is all the more important as the walls of the tube are thicker. Sufficient current should be applied so that the edges of the metal in slot 11 will melt and weld exactly as they come into contact with each other at point 12, while the metal away from these marginal surfaces remains. solid.

Generally, large diameter tubes do not require a significantly greater heating current than small diameter tubes having the same wall thickness. This and the fact that the application of a high frequency current does not require a large contact pressure are important advantages; this process can therefore be applied to tubes whose dimensions, shape, strength and metal are very different.

With an intense high frequency current and relatively low voltage applied in this way, most of the current flowing through the metal of the tube will necessarily follow, for reasons which will be explained later, a path from one of the sliding contacts, which follows one of the edges of the slot to the weld point and then returns in the opposite direction along the opposite edge of the slot to the other contact; a very small part of the current flows following the circumference of the tube.

The reason for this phenomenon is that the high frequency current has a strong tendency to follow the path of least impedance which is offered to it, and then that the impedance which opposes the passage of the high frequency current is mainly an inductive reactance. , we can determine the path that the current will follow based mainly on the inductance. Since the edges of the slot which are to be welded are very close to each other, the high frequency current following these edges is subjected to a much lower impedance than the currents tending to flow circumferentially around the tube. .

Since, for the foregoing reasons, almost all of the high-frequency current passes along the near marginal surfaces of the V-shaped slot, it follows that the temperature of these surfaces continues to rise, after they pass through the right. contacts, and that this temperature reaches a maximum exactly when the edges merge together at the place of the weld. It therefore follows that each zone of the edges of the slot which approaches the contacts can pass through them before having been brought to a very high temperature; the difficulties caused by the high temperatures at the location of the contacts are therefore avoided.

However, since high frequency current continues to flow along the edges of the V-slot, until such time as these edges merge together at the location of the weld, these can be heated to the point of softening. enough to be welded, without risking being damaged or deformed by coming into contact in this state with any part of the device; the edges are brought to the desired solder temperature just as they are about to merge together and only in the reduced area of interest.

In this way, the heating current can be used with exceptionally high efficiency, because no part of the tube, with the exception of the very small seam area, must not be heated to a high temperature.

Even in this zone, the heating up to the highest temperature is limited in time substantially to the duration of the weld. This area is reduced to approximately a point, where the edges of the slit touch each other. These edges are softened only to an extremely small depth of the order of magnitude of 25 [t. This depth depends on the frequency of the current. For practical reasons these frequencies are limited to values which as a lower limit are between 50,000 and 100,000 cycles and as an upper limit are more than 500,000 cycles.

In some cases, especially if the diameter of the tube is relatively small, however, a considerable part of the current tends to flow circumferentially around the tube instead of following the edges of the V-shaped slot, and the area of the tube. weld may tend to change position along the direction of tube travel; this then results in a reduction in efficiency and in irregularities in the weld. It has been found that these difficulties can be overcome, by means of means which make possible an increase in the speed at which the tube can be advanced, while still achieving a weld of great uniformity.

Additional rollers 25 and 26 can be applied on two opposite sides of the tube in a position where they strongly press the edges 18, 19 of the slot against contacts 15 and 16. These rollers must either be in one. insulating material, either having insulating surfaces or being mounted on insulating support shafts.

In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the conducting bar 22 is shown with a discontinuity gap 27, above which the part 22a of the conducting bar extends until it is connected to the arrival of the current. The purpose of this gap is to make it possible to connect in series with the circuit a conductive part 30 in the form of a hairpin extending downwards from the portion 22a of the conductor bar to a point close to one of the edges of slot 11, then along that edge to a point above point 12.

At this last point, this conductive part 30 is folded back so as to come back on itself following the other edge of the slot 11, just above the latter, and it then comes into contact with the part 22 of the conductor bar. The role of the conductive part 30 is to help concentrate the current along the edges of the slot 11, due to what is called the proximity effect in the art of induction heating. In other words, part 30 serves to reduce the inductance of the path followed by the current between the two contacts.

In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the current coming from the source passes through the part 22a of the conductive bar, then the conductor 30 in the form of a hairpin, the portion 22 of the conductive bar, the contact 16, one of the edges of the slot 11 , the zone 12, the other edge of the slot 11, the contact 15 and finally the conductive bar 21 which ensures its return to the source.

Due to the intense current used, it is generally necessary to provide cooling means for the conductor bars 21 and 22, 22a. This means can be achieved by providing in these members cavities, as can be seen in the drawing, through which a cooling fluid is circulated. Fluid is brought into bar 22a through cavity 35, passes thence through the hollow interior of member 30 to a cavity 36 provided in conductor bar 22, and then flows through a material tube. insulating 37 and enters a cavity 38 of the conductive bar 22a. The conductive bar 21 has a U-shaped cavity 39 for receiving the cooling liquid.

It is understood that the device comprises an insulated support and mounting means (not shown) to rigidly hold the conductive bars in the positions shown and to be able to adjust them if necessary with respect to the weld zone 12.

As ori can be seen in fig. 2, it is not necessary that the contacts 15a and 16a of the tines to apply the high frequency current to the two opposite edges of the slot are exactly opposite each other; on the contrary, one can shift them, one being in front of the other. This arrangement can be used when it is possible to achieve a relatively short current path between the contacts and the weld area; it allows a narrower slit to be made in the tube where the edges of the slit are to be heated, thereby reducing the reactance of the path followed by the current.

In other cases, as can be seen in fig. 3, the lower ends 41, 42 of the contacts 15b, 16b can be shaped so that they come into contact with the outer surface of the tube 10b along the edges of the slot. With this arrangement, it is possible to achieve an even narrower slot at the location of the contacts and consequently reduce to a minimum the impedance of the current path between the contacts and the weld zone.

On the other hand, as seen in fig. 4, the contacts 15c, 16th can be arranged so that they extend downwardly through the slot, and provided with ends 43, 44 which come into contact with the inner surface of the tube at points arranged along the slit very close to it. This embodiment is preferable when the interior surfaces of the tube are uniform and shiny and therefore capable of making good electrical contacts, or when it is desired to achieve more intense heating along the lower part of the edges of the slot.

The embodiment shown in FIG. 5 is the same as that of FIG. 3, with this difference, however, that the contacts 15b, 16b are disposed closer to the weld area 12b and a member 62 is disposed in the slot of the tube, in front of the contacts to prevent the edges of the slot from coming in. 'against each other prematurely or irregularly. In the event that the contacts are not interposed between the edges of the slot, these may tend to approach each other too early so that the weld area may tend to move slightly towards forward and backward along the length of the tube, giving an irregular weld.

This difficulty can be avoided by interposing the spacer 62, immediately in front of the contacts. This member 62 consists of two rotating discs made of thin metal sheet, isolated from each other and from the shaft 63a which carries them. A support (not shown) comprising bearings and whose position can be adjusted is provided for this shaft. Such a spacer member can also be used in the arrangements of each of the other figures.

It is understood that one can use, as in FIG. 1, a support and a fluid cooling device with all the forms of contacts shown in FIGS. 2 to 5 inclusive, and which can also be used with the contacts of fig. 2-5 a conductor in the form of a hairpin, such as that shown at 30 in FIG. 1.

If we look again at fig. 1, it can be seen that the device comprises a magnetic core formed by a number of rods 50 of magnetic material, which are supported inside the moving tube by means of an insulating angled piece 51, which extends down through the slot 11 and which is shaped so as to clamp and fix in place an insulating strip 52 enclosing the rods 50. These rods may be constituted, for example, by an agglomerated magnetic oxide which is an insulating material, having a low loss factor as well as high resistivity; one of these materials is, for example, the material known under the name Ferra mic (registered trademark in the U. S. A.).

However, this core can also be formed by any other material having a high permeability and giving rise only to very low losses by eddy currents. As seen in the drawing, this magnetic core extends from an area below the contacts and inside the tube to a region close to the weld area 12. This magnetic core fills a much of the interior space of the tube, with the exception of the region immediately below the slot 11 and the clearance required along the walls of the tube.

This inner magnetic core can be completed by rods 60 of a similar magnetic material, which are arranged around the outer surface of the tube and which are held in place by an insulating support 61 fixed to these rods. However, the inner core will generally prove to be much more efficient than this outer core.

It has been found that it is possible, with an inner core of magnetic material, to increase up to 8 to 10 times the inductance of the circumferential path from contact 15 to other contact 16; if a material having a low resistivity is selected for the core, the power losses are not appreciably increased beyond those which would occur in the absence of such a core.

Using such a core, it was possible, as found in a test, to weld an aluminum tube with a diameter of 50.8 mm and a thickness of 2 mm at the speed of 13 , 5 meters per minute, using a current with a frequency of 400 kilocycles supplied by a 20 kW generator; by operating on the other hand under the same conditions, but without using the core, the tube could be advanced, welding it in a correct manner, only at speeds of about 7.2 meters / minute. In the test described above, the parts were arranged so that the distance between the weld area and the rear edges of the contacts was about 56.8 mm.

It has been found that this distance is slightly less than this value when it comes to welding non-ferrous metal tubes. In a similar test of welding a steel tube, it was found that this distance was close to 57.1 mm. In another test carried out with a steel tube, using a current with a frequency of 375 kilocycles supplied by a 20 kW generator, it was found that this tube could be welded at a speed greater than 15 meters at per minute, the tube having a diameter of 50.8 mm and a wall thickness of 1.3 mm. There was no protruding edge, nor any other irregularity along the weld line. With more powerful high frequency generators it is of course possible to considerably increase the welding speeds mentioned above.

It is a great advantage that the high frequency generators used for this high speed welding process are much less expensive than the comparable low frequency generators heretofore used for welding tubes. The arrangement of the contacts allows the machine to be set up and set in a few minutes for different tube sizes, instead of the many hours required by old devices.

It should be noted that the magnetic core used in the device described here plays an entirely different role from that of the magnetic core used for the induction heating of the tubes in the case where an induction heating coil is arranged around the tube. In this case, the addition of the core increases the total magnetic flux produced by the coil, and this flux in turn increases the total current circulating circumferentially in the tube as a result of the induction. In the present case, the effects produced by the magnetic core are in reality opposite to those achieved with such induction heating methods.

In the process described, the core decreases the current flowing around the tube and forces most of the current to follow the useful path from one contact to the weld area and from the latter to the other contact.

The high frequency power required is a function of the thickness of the tube and is largely independent of the diameter of the tube. Thus, noticeably more power is not needed to weld large diameter tubes than to weld small diameter tubes; this is the consequence of the fact that the heating is limited to the edges to be welded. The opposite occurs in low frequency induction heating processes; in these processes, the larger the diameter of the tube, the greater the power required, because a considerable part of the heat is distributed in regions remote from the edges of the slot.

The method described also has the advantage of requiring only a single pair of contacts, while nevertheless achieving a perfectly effective heating effect all along the edges of the V-slot, from the contacts to the hard point. where the temperature is maximum. On the contrary, with low frequency processes, if strong currents are applied through the slot, either large high conductivity rollers applying high pressure or a number of pairs of these rollers, each of which can only produce momentary heating, even risking the tube to cool down after each pair of rollers have passed and without having any possibility of achieving sustained and increased heating of the edges of the slot after they have left the contacts.

The greatest advantages of the described process are obtained with the relatively thin-walled tubes, of both ferrous and non-ferrous metal, which could not withstand the considerable contact pressures required by the high heating current required by the machines. old resistance welding processes, especially if the tube has to advance at high speed for economical production. When the device has been mounted to manufacture tubes of given dimensions, with the contacts of the edges of the slot arranged at a given distance from the weld zone, the frequency can be determined by calculation, so that the current follows the path longed for ; this frequency can also be easily determined by means of short tests.

Frequencies close to 100,000 cycles presently cause certain practical difficulties owing to the fact that this frequency band is located between the band of generators driven by motors and the band of frequency generators comprising vacuum tubes. Consequently, as indicated above, it is frequencies of the order of several hundred thousand cycles or higher frequencies which are presently preferable in practice. These frequencies can be obtained easily and economically with vacuum tube generators.
