Method of manufacturing a timepiece dial The present patent relates to a method of manufacturing a timepiece dial having at least a part including the front surface, that is to say the surface arranged facing the observer, is concave and constitutes a portion of the surface of a torus coaxial with the dial.
This process, which makes it possible in particular to manufacture dials similar to those shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 of patent N 330188 is characterized in that it consists in making the dial rotate around its axis and in bringing into contact with the surface to be made concave, a chisel which is made to oscillate in a radial plane of the dial around an axis located in an adjustable position in front of the latter.
A further subject of the present patent is a machine for implementing this process. This machine, which comprises a lathe headstock carrying a rotating spindle provided with a dial-holder mandrel, is characterized by two crossed carriages, one lower and one upper, movable respectively on parallel slides and on slides perpendicular to the axis. of the spindle, by a pivot carried by the upper carriage and perpendicular both to the slides of the two species and to the axis of the spindle, and by a rotary plate carrying a tool holder device and intended to turn at an angle adjustable around said pivot, the whole so that the operator can bring the geometric axis of said pivot in front of the dial and adjust its position relative to the dial-holder mandrel.
The appended drawing illustrates, by way of example, an embodiment of this machine (fig. 1 and 2), an implementation of the claimed process (fig. 3), and of the dials thus obtained (fig. 4, 5 and 6).
The machine shown in -élévation partially cut off in FIG. 1 and in plan in FIG. 2, comprises a base B provided with longitudinal slides 1, 2 and an upright with two-bearing lathe headstock 3, 4 in which a spindle 5 rotates provided with a centering mandrel 6 carrying a dial blank 7. The Longitudinal slides 1, 2 carry a lower carriage 8 provided with a cleat 9 and sliding between two stop screws 10-11 which are carried by cleats 12-13. The operator controls the movements of the lower carriage 8 along the arrows FI F, by acting on a large lever 14, connected to a transmission rod, not shown.
The lower carriage 8 has eagle tail slides 15-16 perpendicular to the longitudinal slides 1, 2 and along which an upper carriage 17 can be moved, thanks to a threaded rod with an operating button 18 rotating opposite a micrometric graduation 19. These displacements are

bolized by the arrows F3 F4. A frustoconical pivot part 20 with centering pin 21 is fitted in a corresponding central housing of the upper carriage. This part 20 is fixed by screws 23 to a rotary plate 24 intended to rotate about a vertical axis A-A, that is to say perpendicular to the slides of the two species.
In the median position of the carriages, this axis AA is located in front of the blank 7. The upper carriage 17 has a sliding groove 25 in an arc of a circle centered on the axis AA, in which two adjustable studs 27a can be blocked. and 27b carrying stop screws 28a and 28b. The studs 27 and their screws 28 serve to limit the angular displacements of the rotary plate 24, around the axis A-A, by intercepting a pin 28c driven into a blind hole in the plate 24.
The latter has slides 29-30 eccentric with respect to the axis AA, along which can move along the arrows F7 FS a base support 31 surmounted by an auxiliary carriage 32 carrying the device 50 for clamping a chisel. 33, which can either be brought closer or further away from the mandrel 6, following the arrows F5 Fo by acting on a control button 34 wedged on a micrometric screw. Indeed, the carriage 32 is guided in the longitudinal slides 51 of the base support 31. By means of the lever 35, the rotary plate 24 is rotated with the support and the chisel following the arrows Fo FIo.
One can identify such or such relative position of the base support 31 and of the auxiliary carriage 32 by means of an adjustable stop screw 54 capable of being blocked by a lever 55. FIG. 3 shows schematically how the machining of a dial blank is carried out using the machine shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. The parts of this blank, designated by 7, which are intended to have a concave anterior surface, are formed by added hour signs 60.
To proceed with the machining of these signs, the operator centers and first clamps the blank 7 in the mandrel 6; it then brings the axis AA into a position located in front of the dial 7 by moving the carriages 8 and 17 by means of the lever 14 and the button 18. It then adjusts the machining depth by moving from right to left on the fi -. 1 and 2, the carriage 32 using button 34.
The actual machining is then carried out by driving the spindle 5 in rotation and by imparting to the support 31, by means of the handle 35, an oscillating movement about the axis AA, the amplitude of which is fixed by the screws 28a and 28b.
The fi-. 4 to 6 show, in plan, various dials manufactured by means of the machine described above. In the dial of fig. 4, the concave part appears in plan as a ring 61 bearing the hour signs 60 ', while in the dial of FIG. 5 the concave parts are divided into decorative parts 63 presenting in plan the appearance of sectors of crowns and into parts 60 'constituting the hour signs. The dial in fig. 6 has reported hour signs 60 on a dial plate 64 .; these signs constitute the concave parts of the dial.
