Description

Apparatus nvt high vacuum chamber and continuously usable vacuum lock for tapes and wires When steaming tapes and wires. In a high vacuum, it is often of great advantage to be able to continuously introduce the objects to be vaporized into the high vacuum space and, after vaporization, to be able to remove them again in the same way. In this case, among other things, ongoing control measurements outside the vacuum are possible without great effort.

The subject of the invention is an apparatus with a high vacuum chamber and a vacuum sehleuse in which the aforementioned object is achieved. The lock is a continuously usable vacuum lock for tapes and wires, in which at least one intermediate chamber is arranged between the high vacuum space and the outside space in the entry and execution and in which implementation conditions are provided between the individual spaces.

The smallest dimension of the bushings is advantageously dimensioned such that it is smaller than the mean path length of the gas molecules in the fore-vacuum space.

In the case of vacuum vapor deposition, as can be carried out with the apparatus according to the invention, the problem of prior continuous cleaning of the strips or wires to be vaporized in a vacuum occurs. In the known discontinuously working vaporization devices, the objects to be vaporized are exposed to a glow discharge that burns at pressures between 10-1 and 10-2 Torr.

This is done in such a way that the vacuum tank is initially up to the pressure required for the glow discharge and only after the surface has been cleaned. the high vacuum required for vaporization is pumped out. A new proposal equips a limited continuous mode of operation.

The material to be vaporized is unwound from a supply roll arranged in the glow discharge space, after the glow discharge cleaning has taken place, it is passed through a narrow channel into the high vacuum vaporization space and there, after vaporization, is wound up again on a roll.

With the aid of the apparatus according to the invention, it is possible to carry out the preprocessing and machining process simultaneously and continuously if both the vacuum chamber and the antechamber, or one of the same, are set up for treating the strips and wires. So it is e.g. B. possible to carry out the aforementioned cleaning process by glow discharge continuously with the vaporization process in that one of the antechambers, which has a suitable pressure, is set up for the glow discharge.

The additional devices required for this purpose then essentially consist of an electrode in the relevant chamber.

Embodiments of the invention are shown schematically in the drawing; It shows: FIG. 1 an apparatus according to the invention with an antechamber each on the inlet and outlet side, FIG. 2 an apparatus according to the invention with two antechambers on the introduction side and an antechamber on the execution side, with an antechamber on the introduction side for the Carrying out a glow discharge for pre-cleaning is set up.

In Figure 1, 1 denotes a high vacuum space, 2 and 3 antechambers with a pressure difference compared to chamber 1 of about 2 to 4 orders of magnitude (with respect to mm IIg). The bushings between the individual chambers are marked 4, 5, 6 and 7 be. According to kinetic gas theory, the smallest dimension h of bushings 4 and 5 must be smaller than the mean free path of the gas molecules in spaces 1 and 2 or 1 and 3.

Then the gas flow through the bushings 4 and> 5 is practically zero, and the suction power of a diffusion pump 8 required for the high vacuum in the chamber 1 (10-3 to 10-6 mm Hg) is sufficient to suck the through Diffusion into the chamber 1 penetrating gas amount. The quality of the Va kuums in the evaporation chamber 1 is thus retained.

For the bushings 6 and 7, with the aforementioned gaskine table conditions, there would be technically useless small dimensions h; with a large suction capacity of the rotating oil pumps 9 and 10 which are suitable for the preliminary vacuum in chambers 2 and 3 (approx. 10-1 to 1 mm I3g), however, the dimensions for bushings 6 and 7 can have the same dimensions as selected for implementation 4 and 5 who the.

If the pump outputs required by the backing pumps are difficult to achieve, it is possible to set up two or more antechambers on the inlet and / or outlet side. The required for the high vacuum in the chamber 1 Dif fusion pump would usually not have sufficient suction power if the high vacuum chamber without antechamber went directly through the bushings 4 and 5 into the atmospheric space.

The remaining dimensions of the implementation usually play a subordinate role because they are one according to the kinetic gas theory. result in a linear effect, while the smallest dimension h of the implementation is included in the calculation approximately to the power of three, provided that k is much smaller than the other dimensions of the slots.

In Fig.2: 11 mean the high vacuum chamber, 12, 13, 19: the antechamber. In the chamber 13, the electrode 15 is arranged for carrying out surface cleaning by glow discharge. The lead-throughs between the individual chambers and to the exterior are denoted by 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20, the pump connections by 21, 22, 23, 24.

The arrangement of FIG. 2 corresponds, as seen from the electrode 15 and the use of a second antechamber on the introduction side, the structure of that in Fig.l. The dimensioning of the ducts and the pump performance and thus the pressures in the individual chambers corresponds to the statements above.

The pressures of 10-1 to 10-2 Torr required for the above-mentioned glow discharge, as an example of pretreatment, can thus be achieved without difficulty by matching the smallest dimensions of the bushings on the one hand and the pump capacities on the other.

In the above-described schematic arrangements, for the sake of clarity, the necessary devices for guiding the objects to be treated, such as guide rollers or corresponding transport devices, are omitted. With regard to the specified condition for the smallest dimensions h, it should be noted that when dimensioning them for the practical case, the remaining clear width - after deducting the thickness of the material at the time of introduction and additionally the thickness of the material deposited in a vacuum during execution is considered.

A great broadening of the application range of the apparatus according to the invention can be achieved by setting up continuously adjustable bushings or creating bushing sets with various smallest dimensions.

In addition to the specific example of vacuum evaporation given, the invention can also be used with other vacuum evaporation methods for ribbons and wires, especially with great advantage and relatively little effort when several operations are to be carried out at different pressures in continuous operation.

For example, the apparatus according to the invention results in significant relief in the manufacture of metal paper capacitors, generally in the vapor deposition of conductive or insulating films on thin foils. Layers and especially in the evaporation of thin metal foils with flexible glass layers of a few micron thickness for wound capacitors.
