<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Timepiece The present invention relates to a timepiece comprising a fixed dial provided with a series of twelve windows and a movable disc arranged under said dial and having, at the height of said windows, a series of numbers 0 to 11, and a second series of numbers from 12 to 23 alternating with those of the first series.
This timepiece is characterized by two intermediate wheels driven in opposite directions by the gear train at the rate of one revolution in twenty-four hours and each carrying a pin, these pins alternately actuating an oscillating hammer subjected to the action of a spring-jumper and connected to a rocker for actuating the movable disc, all in such a way that every twelve hours, at noon and at midnight, the movable disc rotates, alternately in opposite directions, by 150, and lets see either the numbers 0 to 11, or the numbers 12 to 23, through the windows of the fixed dial.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention. Only what is necessary for understanding the invention has been shown in the drawing.
The single figure is a plan view of this embodiment with the dial removed.
The watch shown in the drawing has a fixed dial, the edge of which is shown in dotted lines at 1. Instead of numbers or hour signs, dial 1 is provided with an annular series of twelve windows 2. Below the Dial 1 is arranged a movable disc 3 capable of rotating about an axis passing through the center of the movement. The disc 3 has, at the height of the windows 2, a series of numbers from 0 to 11 and a second series of numbers from 12 to 23 alternating with those of the first series. On the barrel of the hour wheel 4 is wedged a wheel 5 which is engaged with a first intermediate wheel 6, pivoted in the frame 24 of the movement and held in place axially by the disc 3.
The intermediate wheel 6 has a diameter and a number of teeth double those of the wheel 5, so that, when the timepiece is running, it rotates at the rate of one revolution in twenty-four hours. The wheel 6 meshes with a second intermediate wheel 7 having the same diameter and the same number of teeth as the wheel 6, so that the wheels 6 and 7 rotate at the same speed, but in opposite directions, as shown by the arrows. The wheel 6 carries near its periphery a pin 8 planted perpendicularly in the plate of the wheel 6; wheel 7 carries a similar pin 9.
In the vicinity of the intermediate wheels 6 and 7 pivots, on a tenon 10 fixed in the frame 24 of the movement, a T-shaped part 11, hereinafter called a hammer, the branches of which end in inclined faces 12 and 13 against which support the pins 8 and 9, as described below. Stops 14 and 15 planted in the frame 24 serve to limit the amplitude of the movement of the hammer 11. A stud 16 of triangular section, fixed on the shaft of the hammer 11, is subjected to the action of a spring-jumper 17 fixed to the frame 24. The end of the shaft of the hammer 11 carries a pin 18 which is engaged with play in an opening 19 of a lever 20 pivoted at 21 on the frame 24.
The rocker 20 has, on the side opposite the opening 19, a rectilinear arm 22 which is engaged between two pins 23 fixed on the underside of the movable disc 3.

The mechanism described and shown operates as follows When the timepiece is running, the wheel 5 turns clockwise in the figure, so that the intermediate wheels 6 and 7 are driven respectively in the direction indicated by the arrows, in the direction inverse to each other and at the rate of one turn in twenty-four hours. Let us assume that the drawing shows the position of the parts a moment before noon, the series of numbers 0 to 11 being still visible through the windows 2 of the fixed dial 1.
We see that the pin 8 of the intermediate wheel 6 is in contact with the inclined face 12 of the hammer 11. When the watch continues to run, the pin 8 pushes the hammer 11 to the left, by tilting it clockwise, against the action of the spring-jumper 17. During this movement, the pin 18 moves freely inside the opening 19 of the lever 20. During the subsequent movement of the hammer 11, it happens a moment when the upper edge of the stud 16 exceeds the tip of the jumper 17, so that the latter acts to suddenly turn the hammer 11 clockwise until it strikes the limit stop 15.
Before the start of this sudden rotation of the hammer 11, the pin 18 had just come into contact with the right wall of the opening 19, so that at the moment of the rapid rotation of the hammer 11, the pin 18 gives an impulse to the rocker 20, which swivels abruptly in the counterclockwise direction around its axis 21 and causes the movement of the movable disc 3 also in the counterclockwise direction, thanks to the action of its arm 22 on the pins 23. The various parts of the mechanism are dimensioned and arranged such that the rotation effected by the movable disc 3 is 150, so that it is now the series of numbers from 12 to 23 which appears through the windows 2 of the dial 1.
The position of the pin 8 on the intermediate wheel 6 is chosen such that the sudden rotation of the movable disc 3 occurs exactly at noon. As soon as the hammer 11 has finished its rotation under the action of the jumper 17, its face 12 no longer encroaches in the path of the pin 8, so that the latter can pass freely alongside the hammer 11 during the minutes which follow noon.
During the process described above, namely the midday switching of the movable disc 3, the pin 9 carried by the intermediate wheel 7 does not play any role, because it is located at this time approximately opposite the hammer 11 A little before midnight, the pin 9 comes into contact with the inclined face 13 of the hammer 11 and pushes the hammer counterclockwise until the upper edge of the stud 16 passes the tip of the jumper 17.
The hammer is then suddenly tilted counterclockwise, and the pin 18, arriving in the meantime against the left wall of the opening 19 of the rocker 20, turns the latter clockwise, thus bringing back the movable disc 3 in the initial position. It is therefore again the series of numbers from 0 to 11 which is visible through windows 2.
It can thus be seen that the mechanism described rotates by 150, alternately in opposite directions, the movable disc 3 at noon and at midnight, so that the wearer of the watch sees through the windows 2 of the fixed dial 1, i.e. the series of numbers from 0 to 11, or the series of numbers from 12 to 23, depending on whether it is morning or afternoon. Furthermore, this change takes place fully automatically.
When the hands of the watch are rotated forward, that is to say in the normal direction of travel, the operation is exactly the same as in the normal running of the watch. On the other hand, if the hands of the watch are turned backwards, care must be taken not to operate an excessive retouching. Let us suppose, in fact, that the needles are made to move back from the position of the parts shown in the drawing. If one operates the time setting backwards, the wheel 6 turns clockwise, and an excessive rotation of this wheel 6 in this direction would end up bringing the pin 8 against the face 25 of the hammer 11, any pursuit of this movement being impossible.
This fact, however, does not present any drawback, since one is never called upon to set back the hands of a watch by about twenty hours. On the other hand, if one wants to move back the hands of the watch immediately after midday, once the movable disc 3 has already turned, there is no obstacle, since the hammer 11 has already tilted and does not encroach more in the trajectory of the pin 8. The same is true for a correction of the time back to around midnight. It can therefore be seen that, in practice, the watch described and shown can be set to the time, forward or backward, like an ordinary watch.
The embodiments of the timepiece according to the invention can be of any type, such as a wristwatch or pocket watch, clock, clock, etc.
