Description

High voltage direct current generator The present invention relates to a high voltage direct current generator, comprising rectifier elements with a heating cathode and mounted as a voltage multiplier.

We know that we produce on time. current of high-value direct voltage currents by the following two usual methods - rectifying a high-value alternating voltage with the aid of a rectifying element generally constituted by a kenotron; - the use of electrostatic machines of different types directly transforming mechanical energy into high voltage electrical energy.

The advantage of the first solution is constituted by the fact that it uses purely static equipment; an improvement of this process consists in taking an alternating voltage source of much lower value than the direct voltage which one wishes to obtain and to resort to a combination of capacitors and rectifier elements well known under the name of voltage multiplier and comprising two columns of capacitors.

In a voltage multiplier, if it is assumed that the continuous flow is equal to zero, the direct voltage V obtained in steady state is given by the formula V = U, Ny2, N being the total number of rectifiers employed (this number N is an even number if we want to prevent the DC voltage obtained from exhibiting large ripples) and Ue being the effective AC voltage applied to the multiplier.

In this case, if the voltage Ue is applied to the base of the left column, the DC voltage is taken from the top of the right column and vice versa.

The advantages of such a type of generator are - use of rectifiers of low reverse voltage; - Regular distribution of voltage along the columns generally constituting the apparatus; - lower impedance and lower voltage of the AC source.

This last consideration is also essential in the case where the alternating source is not constituted by a transformer connected to the general electrical distribution network, but by a generator of higher frequency included, for example, between 1000 Hz and 1 MHz.

On the other hand, a generator of the aforementioned type has a certain number of drawbacks - the assembly is more complicated than that of a simple rectifier and reveals, in particular, the need to use as many capacitors as there are rectifier elements; - The use as rectifiers of dry elements, for example of the selenium type, entails a high cost price; - the use of vacuum tubes (valves or keno trons) entails the presence of an isolation transformer intended to supply a heating winding separated by the vacuum tubes used, the last tube of the columns therefore requiring isolation Very important.

The high voltage current generator forming the subject of the invention is characterized in that it comprises a current source used for heating each cathode, each source being constituted by a conductive element of a cable forming the secondary of a transformer whose primary is traversed by an alternating current, this cable comprising a conductive core and at least one conductive sheath coaxial with said core, each conductive element being isolated from the adjacent conductive elements by a dielectric sheath. The transformer ensures both the heating of the rectifier elements used in the multiplier assembly and the capacitive connections between these elements.

The use of such a transformer therefore makes it possible to eliminate the capacitors commonly used. The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, two embodiments of the generator according to the invention and a block diagram. Fig. 1 shows the block diagram. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the first embodiment.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the second embodiment. In fig. 1, there is shown the diagram of a voltage multiplier of the conventional type supplied sant a negative voltage with respect to the earth. This multiplier comprises two columns of capacitors 1 and 2 mounted in series.

Conductors 3 connected to the armatures of the capacitors 1 and conductors 4 connected to the armatures of the capacitors 2 are joined by rectifying elements 5. A source 6 of alternating voltage is used to supply the assembly which is connected. to earth at 7 and delivers a negative current at 8.

In the first embodiment shown in FIG. 2, the high-voltage generator is mounted as a six-stage voltage multiplier providing a negative voltage with respect to the earth and corresponding to the conventional diagram of FIG. 1, but with a special transformer.

A magnetic circuit 9 is traversed by an alternating flux created by means of a winding 10 connected to an alternating voltage source 11, constituted for example by the sector.

Two cables 12 and 13, of a particular type which will be described below, each make at least half a turn around the magnetic circuit 9.

The cables 12 and 13 are manufactured according to one of the techniques commonly used for the production of coaxial cables; they have a conductive core 14 and a series of coaxial conductive sheaths 15 isolated from each other and from the core 14 by dielectric sheaths 16. Two successive conductive sheaths 15, separated by a di-electric sheath 16 constitute a cylindrical capacitor. These various capacitors are arranged in series by the very constitution of the cable and they play the role of capacitors 1 and 2 of FIG. 1.

If we consider in each cable 12 and 13 the two ends of the same conductive sheath 15, between these two points there is a potential difference due to the fact that said sheath 15 makes at least half a turn around the magnetic circuit 9 and that 'thus it forms a loop traversed by a flux of induction alter native.

This potential difference is used for heating rectifier elements 17 such as valves or kenotrons.

The rectifying elements 17, which are homologous to the elements 5 of FIG. 1, are arranged in accordance with the diagram of this FIG. 1. The two terminals of the heating element of each cathode of the rectifier elements 17 are respectively connected to the two ends of the corresponding conductive sheath 15 (or of the core 14), the two terminals thus being supplied with alternating current, while at the same time being brought to the high voltage potential of the corresponding cathode.

The second embodiment shown in fi-. 3 is similar to that described above, but the generator is intended to provide a positive voltage with respect to the potential of the earth. The elements used in the diagrams of fig. 2 and 3 are the same, they have the same reference numbers, only the connection mode is different.

If each rectifying column must comprise 2 elements, each cable will be constituted, in addition to the core 14, by 2 superimposed cylindrical conductors 15. These are of decreasing length, their respective ends being in the straightening columns at the height provided for the supply of the filament of the corresponding element 17.

The advantages of such a device are as follows: the flux circulating in the magnetic circuit 9 is judiciously determined so that there exists between the two ends of the central conductor 14 of each of the two cables, as well as between the ends respective mites of the superposed cylindrical conductors 15, a voltage equal to the supply voltage of the filament of the elements 17; these are therefore normally supplied with heating voltage.

If we consider two successive elements 17 heated by the same cable, it is easy to see that the differences in the average potential of two successive conducting sheaths 15 providing the heating are equal to 2'y 2 Ue, UP being the voltage efficient alternative applied to the multiplier.

It is therefore sufficient to provide between these two successive conductive sheaths 15 an insulating layer 16 sufficient to withstand such a voltage. The presence of this dielectric sheath 16 also makes it possible to create a cylindrical capacitor (with the two conductive sheaths 15 which surround it) which plays the same role as the capacitors 1 (or 2) of FIG. 1.

In other words, each cable 12 or 13 is formed by a succession of insulating tubes 16 and conductors 14 or 15 ensuring a regular distribution of the voltage from the central conductor 14 to the periphery, the capacity existing between the different conductive elements replacing the connecting conductors of the known assembly of FIG. 1.

The outermost conductive sheaths 15 also constitute the second armature, on the one hand, of a capacitor 18 supplying the device with alternating current from a source 19 and, on the other hand, of a capacitor 20 connected to ground at 21.

This is the reason why it was indicated previously that if N is the total number of the elements 17, each cable consists of 2 cylindrical conductors 15 in addition to the central conductor 14, that is to say a conductor more than the number of elements 17 in each column.

It was mentioned previously that in the generator heater transformer described, each of the two cables 12 and 13 only makes a U-turn around the magnetic circuit 9 (single loop). As most of the rectifying elements commonly used require a heating voltage of several volts, it may be necessary to increase the number of loops that each of the cables makes around the magnetic circuit 9.

Two separate transformers can also be used, each transformer having one of the cables as a secondary.

As an indication, it is mentioned that one can make a cable of the type of cables 12 and 13 by winding in a helix on a rigid central conductor constituted, for example, by a copper tube, a sufficiently wide polyethylene band and with sufficient overlap, so that the creepage line is large.

On this polyethylene tape, we put a metal braid on which, again, a second polyethylene helix is wound and so on.

Other embodiments are possible. It is possible, for example, to wind a metal braid in a helix on tubes made of a dielectric material.

A high voltage direct current generator of the type described can be used, for example, in the following installations - electrostatic dust collector; - electrostatic painting device; - nuclear particle accelerator device; - X-ray generator device. These applications are of course given as an indication and not as a limitation.

In the case of an X-ray generator device, the central conductor 14 of one of the cables of the heating transformer can, in addition, serve for heating the cathode of the X-ray tube, either directly or at the same time. 'using a tuning autotransformer.
