Liquid or gaseous fuel burner When a burner is in stable operation, the speed of the flame, that is to say the speed with which the flame propagates, is equal to the arrival speed of the combustible mixture. It is therefore necessary, if one wishes to increase the intensity of combustion, to increase the speed of the flame.
The invention relates to a liquid or gaseous fuel burner produced for this purpose.
This burner comprises two concentric rotating cups, but offset axially with respect to each other by being separated from each other by primary air passage ducts and is characterized by air passage ducts. secondary air which is directed towards the center of the combustion chamber and towards the front of the cups.
There is described below, by way of nonlimiting example, an embodiment of the burner according to the invention with reference to the accompanying drawing in which FIG. 1 is an axial section.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section, on a larger scale, of the sprayer of this burner.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of a detail. Referring to fig. 1, there is shown at 1 an electric motor driving a shaft 2. The motor is surrounded by a casing 3 having at 4 an adjustable opening by means of a register 5. The shaft 2 rotates the turbine 6 of a fan, rotating inside a volute 7 fixed by means of screws on the casing 3 of the motor. The air admitted through the opening 4 cools the windings of the motor, is sucked in by the turbine 6, then is discharged towards the outlet of the fan passing through a rectifier 8 fixed inside a volute 7a fixed to the volute 7.
An air distributor 9, fixed on the volute 7 distributes the air which it receives from the fan by means of the fins 10.
On axis 2 of the motor is also fixed, by a tightening nut 42, a rotary sprayer consisting of a double concentric cup 43 and 44 re linked together by three arms 45. The cup 44 is offset downstream with respect to the cup 43, so that it works with the latter in series. A groove 46 is formed on the inner wall of the cup 44 which communicates by a series of radial holes 47 with the outer wall of the cup. At the exit of these holes, on the outer wall of the cup, is a projecting collar 48.
Inside the cup 44 is placed a removable diaphragm 49 which determines the flow rate and the angle of the primary air, the latter passing between the cup 43 and the cup 44.
At the downstream edge of the cup 44 are fixed several deflector pallets 50; in addition, on the periphery of the edge of this cup 44 are formed a row of radial fins 51 which present a certain angle with respect to the axis of the combustion chamber and with respect to the tangent to the axis of rotation.
These fins are located in front of a shoulder 52a of a divergent combustion chamber 52; in the center is the rotary sprayer. Between this chamber and the cup 44 is provided an annular space 53 for the passage of secondary and tertiary air.
The combustion chamber has at its downstream end a circular groove 17 in which a shielded electrical resistance 18 is placed for ignition. The circular groove 17 is connected with the annular space 53 by a series of ducts 20 for the admission of tertiary air which has the effect of cooling the resistance.
The ignition resistance is maintained in the groove 17 by a refractory sheet cone 54 pierced with a series of holes 55 for the passage of tertiary air into the flame. At the outlet of the combustion chamber 52 is placed a fire tube 22 made of refractory material and which is connected with the chamber by means of a removable hinge 21.
The motor shaft 2 also drives the rotor 23 of a vane pump ensuring the fuel supply. The latter is discharged through a channel 24, passes through an appropriate flow-regulating device 25 which is connected by a pipe, not shown, to an annular space 28 surrounding a needle 29. The body 27 of the feed pump is fixed on the casing 3. The seat 30 of the needle 29 is rotatable and consists of one end of the motor shaft 2.
The assembly of the components ensuring the adjustment of the fuel flow is also fixed on the casing 3. The motor shaft 2 is traversed along its axis by a fuel supply channel 31. This conduit is in communication with the 'inside the cup 43 via a duct 39 on the path of which is an eccentric ball 40 applied against its seat by a spring 41.
The operation of the burner which has just been described is as follows. With the engine stopped, the ignition resistor 18 is energized. When the latter has reached a sufficient temperature, the engine 1 is then started and the resistor is cut. The vane pump then delivers the fuel into the annular space 28 and then, from there, into the channel 31 via the adjustable needle 29. The latter, thanks to its rotary seat 30, does not present the risk of The obstruction that is encountered in known types of fixed seat needle and allows fuel to be used without the need to filter it.
The ball 40 which, under the action of the centrifugal force, is detached from its seat against the action of the spring 41, allows the combustible fluid to pass through the conduit 39 to the cup 43, the fuel then spreading out in a thin film over the inner face of this cup 43 and then being projected tangentially to this cup. Of course, when the engine is stopped, the ball 40 rests on its seat and prevents the fuel from reaching the sprayer. In addition, the fan 6-7 sucks in the air necessary for combustion, the admitted quantity of which is regulated by means of the register 5.
This air cools the motor 1, passes through the fan and its rectifier and finally enters the distributor 9.
The primary air passes through the fins 10, which impart a certain movement to it. This air passing around the first cup 44 sprays the fuel film which emerges tangentially from the edges of the cup and also imparts a movement on it, the direction of which comprises an axial component and a tangential component.
The air passing through the annular space 53 is directed towards the fins 51 of the second cup. Through these fins, the secondary air enters in a direction comprising a tangential component, inside the chamber where it meets the primary air or the fuel mixture.
The speed of the secondary air passing through the fins 51 is greater than that of the carbureted mixture because, to the longitudinal movement of the air, there is added a tangential movement due to the rotation of the cup 44. As a result, this secondary air coming into contact with the fuel mixture deflects the mixture towards the axis and tends to bring it back towards the cup 43. The orientation of the fins, their position and the width of the space existing between the shoulder 52a and the cup 44 are determined, taking into account the air and fuel flows, so that an annular vortex is produced coaxial with the burner and represented by the arrows 56.
The effect of this vortex increases the speed of combustion and stabilizes the flame front. Combustion continues in the combustion chamber; this flame is then nourished by the tertiary air. This air comes from the annular space 53 through the openings 20 in the circular groove 17 and finally exits through the openings 55 made in the fixing cone 54. This air also has the role of cooling the ignition resistance 18 when the fan is switched on. This prevents the temperature of the resistor from exceeding a certain limit when it receives the radiation from the flame. Combustion continues in the hearth tube 22 and it finally ends at the outlet of this tube.
To prevent unburnt deposits inside the hearth tube, a part of secondary air is introduced tangentially inside the chamber and it is directed towards the internal walls of the hearth tube thanks to the deflectors 50 which are fixed on the cover 44. The rotational movement of these deflectors produces a circular sweeping of the walls of the hearth tube by air which burns as deposits that may occur and at the same time protects the refractory from a cold air layer. The number, the length of these deflectors, as well as the speed of rotation make it possible to fix the percentage of purging air compared to the secondary air.
When the engine stops, the thin film which remains on the wall of the cup 43 flows downward over the outer periphery of the cup and falls into the groove 46 of the cup 44. Through the series of holes 47 the fuel then flows over the internal wall of the combustion chamber 52 from where it enters through the openings 52a in the groove 17 where the ignition resistance is placed. The fuel accumulated in this groove will be ignited when the resistance heats up at the next start; this flame will facilitate the ignition of the burner in cold weather like a pilot light.
