The invention relates to a stapling machine. Known machines use, to fix together the parts making up an article, metal clips which are driven and completely embedded in the material constituting said parts. Hitherto, however, these machines have had a limited field of application due to the low clamping power of the staples.
The object of the invention is a stapling machine remedying the defect indicated above.
The stapling machine forming the subject of the present invention, comprising a broaching head having a staple driving mechanism, is characterized in that it further comprises means capable of being actuated in a chro nological with said mechanism and to be moved, during the insertion of the staples, to come into engagement with the article to be stapled, so that, when a staple is inserted in said article, the latter is in wood or another rigid material, parts of the branches of the clip can, without leaving the material constituting the article, be deflected to form an angle with the plane of the clip,
in order to form, after completion of the depression, curved hook-shaped parts at the ends of the branches of the clip, these parts gripping the material constituting the article and serving to prevent withdrawal of the clip.
The drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the stapling machine according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side view thereof, partially in section. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are detail sections illustrating the operation of the machine shown in FIG. 1. In the embodiment shown, the machine is more especially intended for the construction of wooden boxes or packing cases and comprises a frame 1 comprising a base 2 and a main support column 3 extending upwards from the base and having, near its upper end, a broaching head 4 projecting forward.
A table 5, capable of being adjusted vertically, is mounted on column 3, below the broaching head 4. This table is intended to support the parts constituting the article which must be fixed together. The broaching head 4 comprises a mechanism 6 arranged to form and drive the staples, actuated by a rotating cam plate 7 disposed at the front end of a transmission shaft 8 mounted to rotate in the broaching head. The transmission shaft 8 carries, at its rear end, a bevel gear 9 which meshes with a pinion 10 carried by a drive shaft 11 mounted to rotate in the upper part of the column 3.
The shaft 11 is itself driven by a motor 12 mounted on the support column 3 and acting on the shaft 11 via a transmission 13 and a control clutch 14 arranged to be moved at will. by a pedal 15 mounted in the base 2 and connected to the clutch by a connecting rod 16 and a lever mechanism 17.
The mechanism 6 for forming and driving in the clips comprises an element for forming the clips 18 and an associated driving element (not shown), capable of sliding axially, in the known manner, in the forming element, these elements. two elements having cam followers which engage in corresponding grooves in the cam plate 7, so that during the rotation of the latter, the staple forming and driving elements are moved in a reciprocating motion to form staples, in the conventional form of an inverted U-shaped wire, and drive these staples into the article to be stapled.
The broaching head has a front plate 19 on which is pivotally mounted a part 20 arranged to receive, at each staple forming and driving cycle, a cut wire blank and to send this blank into the formation plane. and insertion of the staples, the part 20 being urged inwardly towards the elements for forming and driving the staples by a spring 21 also fixed to the plate 19. The broaching head may include means (not shown) to adjust the length of the staple limbs.
The table 5 is arranged so that the parts of the article to be stapled A are in a generally horizontal position, and the stitching head 4 forms an angle with respect to a horizontal plane so that the forming and stapling elements staples are inclined forward and upward with respect to the upper face of the table.
The arrangement is such that when the machine is in operation the staples are driven into the article in a plane inclined relative to a horizontal plane. It is obvious that a similar effect can be obtained by both mounting the mounting head so that the forming and driving members move in a vertical plane, in which case the support table is arranged to support the mounting head. article in an inclined position relative to a horizontal plane.
The clip-forming element 18 is thus inclined axially with respect to the upper surface of the article A which, as indicated below, initially comprises separate pieces intended to be joined together.
In operation, the staple forming member exerts a force having a vertical component and a horizontal component to clamp the parts together while driving a staple into the article. Consequently, the staple forming element has a base 22 (FIG. 2) arranged to engage the upper face of the article, this base having at its free end a clamping surface inclined with respect to the plane of the clamping elements. formation and insertion of staples,
in order to comply with the horizontal arrangement of the article. Further, this clamping surface is grooved at 23 to facilitate clamping between the staple forming member and the surface of the article presented to the stitching head. The arrangement is such that, during depression, the forming element 18 is pushed against the article and helps to clamp the latter firmly in the desired position and to keep it substantially immovable.
A rotary cam plate 24 is mounted on the transmission shaft 8 in the broaching head 4. This plate has a cam 25 engaged with a cam follower 26 carried by an arm 27 of a three-arm lever 28 mounted at pivot on a pin 29 in the broaching head. Another arm 30 of lever 28 is kinematically associated with the drive mechanism of the broaching head, and a third arm 31 of lever 28 is kinematically linked, by a coupling 32, to the internal or rear end of two elements. fork 33, only one of which is visible in FIG. 1.
The fork elements are laterally spaced in accordance with the legs of the clips and are mounted to slide in guideways formed in a bracket 34 at the lower end of the broaching head. The fork elements are arranged to move, by axial sliding, in a plane substantially perpendicular to the plane of the staple forming and driving elements and thus inclined with respect to a horizontal plane.
The support table 5 carries a plate 35 for supporting the article A. The console 34, in which the fork elements 33 are mounted, carries a stop plate 36 for determining the position of the article. relative to the broaching head. The stop plate 36 has openings, one of which is visible at 37 (FIG. 2), these openings corresponding to the guide tracks in the console 34. Thus, during stapling, the fork elements 33 move towards forward through the stop plate to enter the article.
The console 34 is adjustably mounted on a portion 38 of the machine frame protruding forward and secured in the desired position by bolts -39 which pass through elongated slots 40 in the console. This arrangement allows the adjustment by sliding of the console parallel to the broaching head, so that the fork elements 33 and the stop plate 36 can be adjusted simultaneously according to the length which one wishes to give to the branches of the staple. .
The front end of each fork element 33 penetrating into the article has a concave face 41 (FIG. 2) capable of deflecting, when the staple is inserted, the tips of the branches of said staples in a position making an angle to the plane of the clip.
Article A is a box, for example made of wood, having a body 42 and a cover 43. The operation of the machine will be described during the operation of fixing the cover to the body of the box. The body 42 is placed on the support plate 35 of the table 5, and this body and the cover 43 are brought into contact with the stop plate 36. The mechanism is then actuated to initiate a training and depression cycle. of a staple, during which the forming element 18 is moved downwardly so that its base engages and tightens the cover on a side wall of the body of the canister. When a clip has been formed by the mechanism, it is driven into the article (fig. 2) which is held in a substantially fixed position.
The lever 28 controlling the operation of the fork elements 33 is driven in chronological relation to the staple forming and driving mechanism, so that the fork elements remain in their normal withdrawn position until the clips tips of the legs of the clip have passed through cover 43 and partially penetrated into the underlying material of the box, to secure these two parts of the article together.
The fork elements 33 are then projected forward of the stopper plate 36 and are moved by the lever 28 to penetrate slightly into the adjacent side of the box body (fig. 2), the fork elements being held in this advanced position. until staple depression is complete. The movements of the fork members and their period of stopping in the position of entry into the article are determined by the shape of the cam 25 of the cam plate 24.
When the clip 44 (fig. 2) moves downward through the material constituting the body of the box, the ends of the legs of the clip are deflected by the concave faces 41 of the fork elements 33 and are bent forward. practically at right angles to the plane of the clip, thus forming hooks 45 (fig. 3 and 4) which are embedded in the material constituting the article, hold the parts making up the article firmly together and offer high resistance to shrinkage of the clip of the article.
While driving the clip into the article, the clamping surface 23 at the lower end of the clip forming member helps resist the horizontal component of the force created by the fork members. deflecting the staple, thus avoiding displacement of the article. After the staple has been depressed, the staple forming and driving elements and the fork elements 33 are withdrawn, thereby immediately releasing the article and allowing it to be placed in another position for a new indicated stapling. at 44a, 45a in FIG. 4. It is obvious that the machine can be arranged to staple together component parts of articles other than boxes or cases.
For example, for the construction of rectangular frames, the table 5 may have removable clamping devices arranged to support the adjacent parts of the frames during stapling.
