Description

Titanium Alloy The present invention relates to an alpha titanium alloy (dense hexagonal structure), in particular with high creep resistance at 400 to 500 ° C. and good forgeability.

It is known that because of their hexagonal structure, alpha-titanium alloys often have higher creep resistance than beta alloys with their body-centered cubic structure.

Additives such as aluminum, tin, zirconium, oxygen and nitrogen are known to stabilize the alpha form of titanium. Due to the stable alpha structure in the forgeable area, such simple alloys are difficult to handle. As far as is known, titanium alloys, like other alloy systems, can only achieve the best creep resistance if suitable precipitation hardening phases are present.

The titanium alloy according to the present invention contains the following three components: a) at least one alpha-titanium stabilizing element; b) at least one element which does not form any intermetallic compounds, but which partially converts the alloy into the beta phase in the malleable range between 700 and 1100 C, and c) at least one element which causes precipitation hardening with titanium.

As mentioned, aluminum, tin, zirconium, oxygen and nitrogen are known as examples of alpha stabilizers.

The most easily available beta phase-forming element that does not form an intermetallic compound is molybdenum, but this can be replaced in whole or in part by at least one of the elements vanadium, niobium and tantalum.

Any of the known elements that effect precipitation hardening with titanium can be used. Examples of suitable elemen are silicon, chromium, manganese, boron, iron and beryllium.

The following are examples and suitable ranges for the three essential simultaneous additions to titanium to achieve improved or optimal creep resistance and easier production: a) Alpha stabilizers. At least one of the following:

<tb> Oxygen <SEP> 0.02 <SEP> to <SEP> 0.3 <SEP> 0/0
<tb> nitrogen <SEP> 0.02 <SEP> to <SEP> 0.21 / o.

Oxygen and nitrogen are practically always present as impurities, the oxygen content generally being 0.1 to 0.2% and the nitrogen content about 0,

1%. If oxygen-free or nitrogen-free alloys could be produced, they would fall under the basic idea of the invention, provided they would otherwise contain the elements required according to the invention. b) beta phase builders. At least one of the following:
