Ring for sealing between two members at least one of which is rotary The present invention relates to a ring for sealing between two members at least one of which is rotary, in particular between a shaft and a wall in wherein said shaft is rotatably mounted and on either side of which there are fluids at different pressures, this ring being characterized in that it comprises a ring made of an elastic material, such as rubber, provided with a hoop, so that axial pressure on this ring causes a reduction in its internal diameter, and a self-lubricating part,
the face of this self-lubricating part being rectified to ensure a tight seal against a mating surface of one of said members between which the seal must be ensured when the elastic ring bears against the other of these members.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment and variants of the ring which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view, with partial cutaway, of a first embodiment of a ring.
Fig. 2 shows its use as a seal for a rotary compressor, the seal being disposed outside the compressor.
Fig. 3 is a similar view, the seal being placed inside the compressor.

Fig. 8 is a section similar to FIG. 7, but on a larger scale, of a third variant of ring bearing against the rotating shaft - by its self-lubricating ring.

Fig. 11 is a radial axial section of another variant of a composite ring provided internally with springs which tend to extend it parallel to the axis.
Fig. 12 is a partial section of a last variant.
In the embodiment shown in -la fig. 1, the sealing ring A1 comprises an elastic ring 1 made of natural or synthetic rubber (neoprene) or any other similar elastic material. This ring has a section by a radial axial plane in the shape of a U. It comprises, in fact, a very deep annular groove 2, opening out onto one of the lateral faces of the ring via a slot 3 which extends over the entire length. the rim of the ring.
The portions 4 and 5 of this ring, concentric with one another and separated by the slot 3, form two massive circumferential beads such that the ring 1 has a shape similar to that of a tire for vehicle wheel.
This ring is embedded inside an annular angle 6 made of brass or other resistant material which hoops it. It is held on this hoop 6 by means of a fitting 7, itself in the form of a ring and the section of which by an axial radial plane is U-shaped with flared wings to come to bear against the internal faces. heels 4 and 5 of the ring 1. This fitting 7, which can be easily inserted into the ring 1 by separating its two heels and which could, moreover, be constituted by several adjoining sections or not, is then fixed , for example, by an electric welding by spots at 8, in the hoop 6, which immobilizes <I> ipso facto </I> the ring 1 in this hoop.
As can be seen, the deep groove 2 of the ring 1 is closed off in a sealed manner by the assembly of the hoop 6 and the mounted rap fitting 7, thus forming an annular cavity 9 closed. However, this cavity opens into the central void of the ring through holes 10, made from place to place around the entire periphery of the internal flank of the ring 1.
Finally, in this ring 1, opposite the ferrule 7, a groove 11 is provided on the outside in which is embedded a ring 12 made of a self-lubricating material, for example of graphite or of a mixture of graphite and another plastic or elastic substance such as rubber or bakelite. This ring 12 protrudes over a certain length outside the groove 11 and it has a free lateral face 13, which is strictly flat and ground.
The ring 12 is held on the ring 1 either simply because of its elastic embedding in the groove 11, or by gluing or vulcanization in this groove.
The composite ring Ai which has just been described is intended for the production of a seal through the passage of a wall by a rotating shaft.
Fig. 2 schematically shows its application to a compressor B1 to form a seal between a shaft 14 of this compressor and a wall 15 attached to a casing 16 of this compressor, the external face of this wall 15 being perfectly rectified and perpendicular. to the axis XX of the shaft 14. In such an application, the wall 15 therefore separates the inside of the compressor where a certain pressure P prevails from the outside where atmospheric pressure p prevails, less than P.
This wall is crossed with play by the shaft 14 which comprises a shoulder 17 against which is applied, by the hoop 6, the ring Ai.
The shaft 14, during assembly, is disposed longitudinally relative to the compressor Bi, so that it exerts through its shoulder 17 an axial thrust on the ring A in the direction of the arrow <B> fi, </ B> thus applying with a certain axial pressure the self-lubricating ring 12 against the external surface of the wall 15.
Furthermore, the internal dimensions of the ring A1 are such that the latter has an internal diameter, in the free state, slightly less than the diameter of the shaft. The ring A1 is therefore force-fitted on this shaft on which the elastic ring 1 is already tightening, even before the axial compression resulting from the axial thrust exerted by the shoulder 17 of the shaft.
Under the action of this thrust, the self-lubricating ring 12 tends to engage further in the elastic ring 1 and, as the latter is hooped externally by the angle iron 6, the result is that the elastic material is deformed. in its sides, thus exerting an elastic thrust on the ring 12, in the direction of the arrow <B> fi </B> and by applying more strongly on the shaft 14 the portion adjacent to the internal bore of the ring 1, bore which would decrease in diameter in the absence of this shaft.
As a result, the composite ring Ai is driven in rotation when the shaft rotates, a sliding contact taking place between the ring 12 and the wall 15. As the contacting surfaces are ground, a sealed contact is obtained. all the more perfect, from assembly, as the elastic pressure due to the deformation of the ring 1 is greater.
During operation, to this elastic pressure is added the action due to the pressure difference prevailing between the interior of the compressor Bi and the atmosphere. The fluid compressed in the compressor, in fact, gains through the holes 10, the chamber 9 formed in the ring A1 and tends to enlarge this chamber. As the ring 1 is held on the outside by the hoop 6, the result is an even stronger application of the internal flank of this ring against the shaft and of the self-lubricating ring 12 against the wall 15 as the pressure difference ( Pp) is larger. The seal is therefore self-tightening.
In fig. 3, there is shown a variant in which the seal ring A2 is disposed inside the compressor B2; for the self-tightening action, the ring 1d of the seal has holes 101 in its outer side. The rest of the seal is identical to the seal described above and the result is also identical with the sole proviso that the axial compression exerted by the shaft takes place in the direction of arrow f2.
Fig. 4 shows a variant of ring A3 which derives from the first variant by a rotation of 90.1 on itself of each radial section of the two rings. In fact, the ring 1e is applied by its heels against the outer flange of the angle iron 6c, this wing being stamped at 18 to better receive these heels.
The self-lubricating ring 12e is concentric towards the inside <B> of </B> the ring 1c and is embedded in a groove 11c, formed in the internal surface of this ring. Holes 10c, intended to make the internal cavity of the ring communicate with the outside, are made in one or the other of the flanks of the ring 1e depending on the position of the seal in the mechanism which receives it.
In this variant, it is of course the internal cylindrical surface 19 and the self-lubricating ring 12c which is rectified and this ring is of a nature such that it can be deformed elastically, which excludes its production in pure graphite. This ring is therefore made of an elastic or graphitized plastic material, for example graphite natural or synthetic rubber.
Fig. 5 shows an application of the ring A3 on a machine outside a bearing 20 in which a shaft 14c journals. The ring is housed in a rebate 21 of the wall 22 of the machine and rests, by one of the flanks of the ring 1e, against the bottom of this rebate, while it is held in this rebate by a ring split and elastic 23 engaged in a groove of the rebate.
The self-lubricating ring 12 is supported by its rectified and cylindrical surface. against the shaft 14c on which it bears elastically by the initial deformation obtained by the axial compression of the ring 1c, between the bottom of the rebate 21 and the hoop 60.
In this application, the interior of the machine is assumed to be in excess pressure relative to the exterior. In this case, the holes 10c are turned towards the inside of the machine and the pressurized fluid entering the cavity 9c ensures the self-tightening as in the previous applications.
In the variant shown in FIG. 6, the sealing ring A4 has an elastic ring 1a made of natural or synthetic rubber (neoprene) or other similar elastic material. This ring always has a section by a radial axial plane in the shape of a U and comprises a very deep groove or annular cavity 211 opening onto a lateral face 24, which is flat and perpendicular to the axis XX of the ring, through an opening circular 25 of radial width less than the radial width of the adjacent portion of the cavity 9d.
This ring 1a comprises, on either side of this cavity 911, two concentric portions each formed of a relatively thin flank 25 or 26, followed by a solid heel 27 or 28. The heel 27 protrudes towards the end. 'outside, at 29, relative to the sidewall 25 to which it is connected by a fillet 30. Likewise, the heel 28 projects towards the axis XX of the composite ring by its outer surface 31, connected by a fillet 32 to the outer surface also turned towards said axis XX of the sidewall 26.
In the outer heel 27 is embedded an annular part 611 of axial radial section in the form of an angle, this part, made of brass or other resistant material, hoops this heel in the same way as the outer hoops of the previous rings. Because this hoop is embedded in the ring, it is completely protected against deterioration by corrosive and / or abrasive agents. In the two heels 27 and 28 are formed, concentrically, two grooves 31 and 32 in which is engaged a washer 33 whose large faces are perpendicular to the axis XX and which closes the cavity 9d.
This washer 33 can be easily put in place through the opening 25 thanks to the elastic spacing towards the axis XX of the sidewall 26 and of the heel 28. This washer 33 seals off the 9th cavity, without thereby hindering the deformations of the heel 28, because this heel can slide through its groove 32 on this washer 33.
Finally, opposite the heels 27 and 28, that is to say at the top of the U, the ring 1a comprises a solid portion in which is embedded a lique metal washer 34. This heel also bears, on the outside, in relief on its planar face 35 perpendicular to the axis XX, a ring 1211 made of a self-lubricating material, joined to the heel of the ring le by any one of the means described above, or in particular by embedding in the heel provided for this purpose with a groove 11a, either by bonding or vulcanization in this groove or even directly on the surface 35 without the groove.
It should be noted that the ring 12a could still, by way of a variant, be integral with the ring 1a, but have a different rubber composition, made self-lubricating by adding graphite or other suitable substance to the rubber.
It will be noted that the free face 13d, perpendicular to the axis XX of the self-lubricating ring, is strictly flat and ground.
Fig. 7 schematically shows the application of the ring A4 on a compressor B4 to form a seal between the shaft 14d of this compressor and a wall 1611 of this compressor, this wall separating the interior of said compressor sor where there is a pressure P from the outside where there is atmospheric pressure p less than P. The wall is crossed with play by the shaft 14d which comprises a shoulder 17d against which is applied, by its two heels 27 and 28, the A4 ring.
The shaft 14d exerts, by its shoulder, an axial thrust on the ring A4 in the direction of the arrow f <B> l, </B> thus applying with a certain axial pressure the self-lubricating ring 1311 against the wall 16d.
Advantageously, in order to have a good seal between this self-lubricating ring and the wall 16d, the latter is provided with a wear plate in the form of a washer 36 made of chromium-nickel steel or any other suitable resistant material. . This washer, with a rectified flat surface, can advantageously be fixed by vulcanization or gluing, on a rubber ring 37, force-fitted into a rebate 38 formed in the external face of the wall 16d.
As will be understood, under the action of the pressure exerted by the shoulder 17d on the ring A4, the self-lubricating face 13e of which bears against the wear washer 36, the ring A4 undergoes an axial compression which results in by a slight reduction in its internal diameter because the hoop 6d prevents any centrifugal expansion. The heel 28 is therefore urged, at least in its portion adjacent to the fillet 32, towards the shaft 141, on which this heel comes to bear elastically.
It will be noted that the sides 25 and 26 are deformed but, thanks to the sufficient projection of the heel 28, the side 26 does not come to bear against the shaft and this side, which constitutes one of the most fragile parts of the ring. , can therefore not undergo any deterioration. The same would apply, moreover, to the sidewall 25 if the latter were embedded in a groove formed in the shoulder 1711, the latter then having an angle-shaped section.
As for the wear washer 36 and its mounting, they have various advantages - this washer makes it possible in particular to reduce the necessary quantity of resistant material intended to come into contact with the self-lubricating ring 1211; - By mounting on the elastic ring 37, any fixing screw is eliminated, since this ring is force-fitted into the rebate 38; - In addition, the seal between the washer 36 and the wall 16th is perfect, since it is provided by rubber or other elastic material constituting the ring 37; - Finally, the washer 36 and its elastic support 37 contribute in the same way as the composite seal A4 to absorb any vibrations which are detrimental to a good seal.
At the fi-. 8, there is shown a variant of composite ring A5, intended to be disposed between a shaft 14th and a wall 16th; the two raised heels 27e and 28e of this ring are housed in a rebate 39 of the wall, while the self-lubricating ring 13e bears against the shaft; the ring A5 is held in the rebate 39 by a split ring 40.
In this variant, the 6th hoop is housed in the 27th heel which has an outer diameter smaller than that of the 28th more massive heel, so as to leave between it and the rebate 39 a free space to receive an offset extension 41 of a ring 33rd, closing the 9th annular cavity of the elastic ring the.
The ring 33e therefore bears, by its offset portion 41 against the cylindrical surface of the rebate 39 and, optionally, this portion 41 may, in its outer surface, include grooves or other unevenness 42, intended to increase its coefficient of adhesion to the rebate (fig. 9).
In this variant, the self-lubricating ring 12e, which must be flexible and which can advantageously be integral with the ring 1e, is clamped by its surface 19e against the surface of the shaft 14e and is slightly deformed against this shaft, as shown. on the drawing. The shape in the free state of this ring may be that represented by the outline in dotted lines 43.
Optionally, the ring <B> Il '</B> can bear not directly on the shaft 14th, but on a composite ring formed as shown in FIG. 10 of a ring of rubber or other elastic material 44 and of an annular outer hoop 45 of metal, the ring 44 being compressed radially between the shaft 14e and the hoop 45, the outer surface 46 of which is ground.
In the embodiment and the variants described above, the ring can advantageously comprise in the cavity of its rubber ring a series of springs intended to deform this ring in the direction which will elastically apply the self-lubricating ring against the conjugate surface.
In fig. 11, there is shown, in radial axial section, a ring A6 provided with such springs. The ring 1f comprises a drowned hoop 6f and its cavity is closed by a washer 33f engaged in an internal heel 28f and against an annulus groove 47 of the hoop.
We find the self-lubricating ring 12f and, under this ring, a flooded ring 34f, preferably with a U-shaped profile or the like ensuring its rigidity. In the cavity 9f are arranged, preferably at equal intervals, springs such as that 48, shown.
Each of these springs, for example in a helix with turns of decreasing radius, is supported by its large base against the ron delle 33f which may, advantageously, comprise, in line with each spring, a projection 49 coming from stamping, while the The other end of the spring bears against the solid heel of the ring 1f and can be held against any peripheral sliding by a projection 50, integrally formed with this heel in the cavity 9f.
As a variant, the spring <B> 48 </B> can, as shown in FIG. 12, be engaged by its end in a hole 51 made in the solid heel of the ring.
In the variants of FIGS. 8 and 11, washers 33e (fig. 8) and 33f (fig. 11) will be mounted slidingly in the grooves of the heels of the elastic ring so as not to interfere with the deformation of these heels and their application against one of the surfaces between which the seal must be made.
The seals of the different variants of FIGS. 6 to 12 can be made self-locking by providing in the side of the elastic ring facing the space where the greatest pressure prevails, one or more holes, making communicate with this space the annular cavity formed in this ring, as it has been described with reference to fig. 1 to 5.
