Mold for forming the connector of a hypodermic needle
To secure a hypodermic needle to its connector, the process of casting the connector directly onto the needle is frequently used. The mold used for this purpose has a hole on one side to allow the insertion of the rear end of the needle, and an opening on the other side to allow the insertion of a flared core which, during casting , forms a recess in the body of the connector which will then allow the connector to be fitted to the tip of a syringe. When the fitting is cast, there must obviously be direct communication between the recess and the needle hole, and to prevent metal from entering this hole during casting, the core has a sharply tapered point that penetrates in the needle hole.
During casting, the needle is held firmly against this point, and this means is effective in preventing metal from entering the needle hole. It is sometimes difficult, however, to sufficiently press the needle against the tip of the core, and a large proportion of faulty fittings is obtained during manufacture. The process is thus made expensive, either by labor or by the waste material and, moreover, the maintenance of the mold is uneconomical because the cores, in particular, require frequent replacement.
The mold forming the object of the present invention for forming the connection of a hypodermic needle, is characterized in that it comprises a core, the point of which is provided with an elastic seal intended to close the rear end of the hole. the needle.
This avoids the use of a tapered point intended to enter the hole of this needle. The resilient seal is pressed against the rear end of the needle and provides a gasket to provide an extremely effective seal without appreciable difficulty in holding the needle in place. The seal produced is, in fact, so effective that it is possible to use a synthetic plastic material such as polyethylene or nylon, to form the body of the fitting, instead of the metal previously used.
The use of these materials was heretofore not possible due to the fact that it is considerably more difficult to obtain a seal with a plastic of this nature than with a metal.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, a form and variants of execution of the mold according to the? invention.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view of this embodiment, showing the mold during the molding of a hypodermic needle.
Fig. 2 is a section, on a larger scale, of a core shown in FIG. 1.
Figs. 3 and 4, corresponding to FIG. 2, show two variants of the nucleus.
The mold shown at 1 in FIG. 1 is used for the manufacture of a connector 2 of a hypodermic needle 3. The connector 2 has a recess at its rear end which will be used later to fit the connector on a tip of a hypodermic syringe, but during molding this recess is filled by the end of a core 4 which closes the rear end of the mold 1. The latter has an inlet 5 for the molding material which may be a metal or a synthetic plastic material such as polyethylene or nylon.
The mold 1 is split so that after the molding, the finished fitting 2 can be removed.
During molding, it is essential that the molding material cannot enter the hole of the needle 3, and for this purpose the rear end of the hole should be pressed tightly against the tip of the core 4. The mold 1, with the core 4 is firmly held in place on a support, not shown, while the needle 3 is engaged by a guide piece 8 biased by a spring 9, the other end of which bears against a surface 10. The thrust of the spring 9 forces the end of the hole in needle 3 against the point of core 4 which carries an elastic seal 12.
The gasket 12 is made of an elastic material, for example a silicone rubber, and it is fitted into a recess made for this purpose in the core 4. It is held in place by an axial rod 13 controlled by means of a screw 14 screwed into a threaded hole 15 at the rear end of the core 4. By tightening the screw 14, the compression of the gasket 12 can be increased. This increases its resistance to wear and is preserved from any erosion during his job.
In the variant shown in FIG. 3, a seal 16 performs exactly the same function as the seal 12, but its compression cannot be adjusted. It is housed in a recess having a mouth with a reduced area relative to the surface of its base, so that the seal 16 is dovetailed in the core 4. It can be molded in this position or inserted subsequently.
In the variant shown in FIG. 4, a seal 17 is generally cylindrical in shape and has a thread which engages with a corresponding thread cut in a recess 18 made in the tip of the core 4.
Each of the embodiments shown includes a seal which forms an effective seal at the rear end of the needle 3, which significantly reduces the possibility of ingress of the cast material into the needle hole and reduces the amount of material cast into the needle hole. maintenance of the mold to a considerable extent.
