Pressure regulator-self-regulating device for compressed gas containers The pressure-reducing devices used to regulate the pressure of compressed gases, for example carbon dioxide, when they leave a container in which they are under pressure generally have drawbacks very serious due to certain details of their construction. Indeed, current regulators include a valve disposed between an inlet chamber and an expansion chamber. The gas flow is determined by the gap between the valve seat and the plug.
The latter is actuated by a rod, one end of which is secured to the valve, while the opposite end is urged by an elastic membrane, generally made of rubber on which, via a strong spring, a screw is pressed. ordered.
By lowering this screw, pressure is exerted on the membrane and, through it, on the valve flap which is actuated against the action of a spiral spring. When you want to open the bottle by lowering the screw, the spiral spring is compressed and the spacing between its turns allowing the passage of gas is thus too short compared to the corresponding section of the inlet chamber. . The spring thus forms a real constriction on leaving which the gas expands too abruptly and risks freezing and obstructing the inlet chamber so that instead of opening the container there is a risk of 'obstruct the exit.
On the other hand, when it comes to CO2, the contacts between the liquid gas and the rubber diaphragm which occur in the expansion chamber are excessively harmful to the diaphragm which hardens. This can prevent operation of the tensioner and dangerous overpressure when using pressurized CO2. .
Another very annoying drawback may result from the fact that during the passage of carbon dioxide from a reduced channel to the expansion chamber, the gas may expand excessively, forming carbon dioxide snow capable of obstructing the passage. This obstruction will last until the gas has evaporated, after which it risks repeating itself, thus causing an alternation of gas passage and shutdowns, instead of a continuous flow.
The pressure reducing device forming the subject of the present invention is free from these drawbacks. Indeed, the invention relates to a self-regulating pressure tensioner device for compressed gas containers, characterized in that it comprises a main body intended to be connected to the container, connected by a flow pipe with a bore. constant to an independent expansion chamber to which is intended to be connected the outlet pipe of the expanded gas, said body being pierced with a bore communicating with the flow duct and inside which is movable a cylindrical needle of diameter equal to that of this bore and linked to an elastic circular membrane which delimits, in the main body,
a chamber without direct communication with the flow duct and in communication with the expansion chamber, an antagonist spring of the needle being mounted on the main body on the side of the membrane opposite to the chamber that said membrane defines in said body. The appended drawing shows, by way of example, a view of an embodiment of the device forming the subject of the invention, in a longitudinal section.
Referring to the drawing, it can be seen that the regulator is constituted by an assembly of elements respectively forming a main pipe, an expansion chamber, and a device for regulating the pressure of the gas released from a cylinder B provided with a valve. general R and a usual A outlet nozzle. In this nozzle is screwed a tubular element 1 having in longitudinal section a general T shape.
This element has inside a bore 2 coaxial with the outlet nozzle A of the bottle and constituting the inlet of the main pipe indicated in the drawing by the references F. Perpendi culally to the bore 2, is arranged a bore 3 communicating with it. The bore 3 is extended by a threaded bore 4 into which is screwed the end of an element 5 having a T-shaped longitudinal section. The widened part 5 'of the latter is threaded on the outside and its end forms a recess 6 receiving a tubular section 7 provided with a collar 8 abutting against the shoulder formed by the edges of the recess 6. A seal 9 is arranged between the collar 8 and the outer edges of the item 5.
The elements 5 and 7 have bores, respectively 10 and 11, coaxial with the bore 3 and of the same diameter as the latter. It is obvious that the flow duct thus formed by the hazards 2, 3, 10 and 11 does not have any moving element influenced by the gas flowing through the pipe and liable to hinder this flow or to be immobilized or slowed down in its movement during an accidental solidification of the gas.
The shoulder 2 'formed by the bore 2 opening into the bore 3 is shaped so as to present a seat corresponding to the needle 2, the role of which will be explained below. The free end of element 7 leads to an opening 13 provided in the wall of a cylindrical body 14 constituting, with yokes 15 and 16 screwed onto these ends, an expansion chamber 17. The yokes 15 and 16 are screwed on. on the threaded ends of the body 14 and the seals 15 'and 16' clamped between the edges of the body 14 and the bottoms of the yokes 15 and 16 ensure the tightness of the assembly.
The yoke 15 has a threaded opening 18 into which one end of a valve body 19 is screwed onto the opposite end of which a connector 20 is screwed. This connector secures the valve and the regulator to the pipe, not shown, leading the expanded gas to the place of its use.
The yoke 16 also has a threaded central opening 21 into which is screwed the end of a stopper or tubular element 22. This element has two sections 23 and 24, the outer diameter of section 23 being smaller than that of section 24. .
The element 22 has a central bore 26 of the tines to ensure communication between the expansion chamber 17 on the one hand with a manometer M and on the other hand with the regulating device itself described below.
The connection with the manometer M is ensured by the enlarged and threaded part 26 'of the bore 26 in which the threaded rod of the manometer M is screwed. On the section 23 of the element 22 is mounted the annular end 25 d 'a bent tube 27. When fitting element 22, this annular end 25 is clamped between the shoulder 28 formed on the element 22 by the difference in the diameters of the sections 23 and 24 and the plate 16 "formed by a raising of the central part of the yoke 16. The internal diameter of the annular element 25 is greater than that of the section 23 and there thus remains between their walls, a free space which establishes by means of an opening 29 provided in the section 23 perpendicular to the bore 26 ', the communication between the expansion chamber and the bent tube 27.
Gaskets 25 'ensure the tightness of the assembly.
The end 30 also has an annular shape. It is mounted, in a manner analogous to the end 25, on a plug 31 screwed into the cylindrical ex tension 35 of an element 36. The plug 31 has a bore 32 which communicates via an opening 33 with the space 30 'remaining between the outer walls of the plug 31 and the annular end 30 and through it with the tube 27 and the expansion chamber 17. The tightness of the assembly is ensured by seals 34.
After the assembly of the elements 27, 31 and 35, the bore 32 is extended by a bore 36 'provided in the element 35 and which has the same diameter as the bore 32. On the side opposite the extension 35 , the element 36 has a threaded tubular blank 37 onto which the end 40 of the element 1 is screwed.
Channels 38 pass through the element 36 and provide communication between the bore 32-36 and a chamber 39 formed by the walls of the element 36 and a membrane 41, preferably of rubber, the edges of which are clamped by the 'end of element 32 in a seat formed by the inner bottom of element 40. The membrane 41 is secured to the needle 12 by means of the discs 42 and 43 clamped between a nut 44 and a shoulder formed at the corresponding end of the needle 12.
The flange 40 and the opposite end of the element 1 are joined by a cylindrical body 49 having lateral slots that are symmetrical with respect to the axis of the body. The portion of the body adjacent to the nozzle A of the bottle has a cylindrical extension 45 whose outer wall is threaded and in the interior of which is provided a bore 46 whose diameter corresponds to that of the needle 12. A threaded ring 47 inside is screwed on the extension 45 and between this ring and the disc 43 is compressed a spring 48.
The operation of the device is as follows. The gas is in the bottle B in a liquid state, generally under a pressure of 50 kilograms. When the valve R is opened, the liquid gas enters the pipe 2 and flows through the bores 10 and 11, the section of which is calculated so as not to produce an expansion of the gas in the pipe itself. This expansion takes place only in the chamber 17 from which the expanded gas flows after opening the valve 19 to the place of its use.
At the same time as this path, the gas enters the pipe which brings it to the manometer thus placed under pressure and, through the pipe 27, 32, 38, into the chamber 39 in which the gas exerts pressure on the membrane 41. It It is obvious that the elastic membrane subjected to the pressure of the gas will undergo a corresponding deformation and will stress, against the action of the spring 48, the needle 12.
To prevent the formation of vortices slowing the flow of the liquid gas, an expansion of the gas must be avoided before it enters the expansion chamber 17. Thus, the flow duct does not have any constriction. It is therefore obvious that the position of the needle during normal operation must be such that its part in contact with the gas flow does not form a constriction. The position of the needle is determined by the balance of the pressures which it undergoes on one side from the flow of gas escaping from the bottle and on the other hand, by the expanded gas whose pressure is transmitted by the membrane 41 partially stiffened by the discs 42 and 43 and braked by the spring 48. It is obvious that during normal operation, the needle practically does not intervene.
If, during the operation of the gas-supplied installation, any accident occurs causing the obstruction of the gas use pipe, a very dangerous excess pressure could be created in the pipes or in the expansion chamber. , and accidents due to pipe bursting could occur. In the device described above, these accidents are avoided by virtue of the automatic and instantaneous operation of the autoregulator.
In fact, as soon as the pressure in the expansion chamber exceeds the normal working pressure for which the device, in particular the spring 48 and the position of the needle, have been adjusted, the membrane 41 will be subjected to an overpressure and will be deformed by stressing the needle 12 which will approach the seat 2 'and will close the pipe 2, either partially or completely.
Thus the end of the needle 12 acts like the flap of a valve whose seat is formed by the opening 2 '. To ensure the closure of the valve thus formed in the best conditions, the opening 2 'is shaped so that its walls are convex and the contact between the seat and the end of the needle is effected along a line and not along a contact surface.
It should be noted that the needle 12 is made of stainless steel, which moreover clearly distinguishes it from members whose movement regulates the flow of gas in known devices and which are made of rubber. As a result, the needle does not undergo any alteration during prolonged contact with liquid CO2. On the other hand, the element 1 in which the opening 2 'is provided being made of brass, aluminum bronze or another metal which can be considered as soft compared to that of the needle 12, the contact of this soft metal with the stainless steel of the needle ensures, if necessary, an absolutely tight sealing of the opening 2 '.
As the operation of the autoregulator is extremely rapid, the line will be closed before the overpressure becomes dangerous.
As soon as the obstruction is removed, the installation will operate normally, the membrane resuming its usual shape and the needle 12 being consequently withdrawn. When opening the passage 2 to 3 by removing the needle, this passage will present for a short time, a constriction with respect to the flow duct and the liquid gas is likely to expand already in the bore 3 , so that a gas phase is formed in the latter. However, this gaseous phase will only remain for a tiny fraction of a second and normal operation of the device is immediately restored.
It can thus be seen that the device guarantees installations using C02 under pressure against accidents due to obstructions liable to occur in the pipes or at the gas outlet and thus significantly increases the safety of these installations. On the other hand, the membrane does not run the risk of being in contact with the liquid phase of the gas and of being damaged by the latter.
Produced in the manner described above, the device allows very high flow rates compared to its dimensions. Thus, the current type of the device makes it possible to adjust the flow rate up to 6 kg of liquid gas per 12 seconds.
It should be noted that the device can be used for the expansion of all gases and liquids, while standard regulators are provided either for liquids or for gases.
