Recording tape, in particular magnetic It is well known that the initiation of the winding of recording tapes on the receiving reels of recorders is tedious, because of the smallness of the space available between the two sides of the tape. these coils.
A loop that is too large to make sufficient contact with the hub is usually formed, and the take-up reel continues to spin idle without tightening the turns of the tape. It is therefore necessary to proceed with a priming, either by turning the receiving reel by hand while keeping the tape under tension, or by inserting and in any way wedging the end of the tape in one of the slots in the hub of the spool.
Certain bands, or even the reels themselves, are therefore provided with special anchoring or hooking devices, obviously effective, but which complicate manufacture and increase their price.
The object of the present invention is to facilitate the initiation of the winding of these bands. on the receiver coil, in particular tape recorders, by ensuring the self-tightening of their end on the hub of the receiver coil. Its object is a recording tape, in particular a magnetic tape, characterized by the fact that its ends are treated to form an elastic loop in the free state. Preferably, these ends will elastically assume a natural curvature of a radius smaller than that of the hub of the coil.
With a tape having this particularity, it may be sufficient to place its end between the cheeks of the receiving reel, and to turn on the tape recorder. The end of the tape driven by the capstan winds itself around the hub and, when the spool has made more than one turn, the following turns tighten on the first, without slipping.
This elastic natural curvature of the ends of the bands can be achieved in several ways. In a first embodiment, the ends of the strip are coated, on a single face, with a layer or a thickness creating in this strip a tension which causes them to wind up. This thickness could in particular be formed by a simple fold of the strip on itself, before gluing.
The tendency to wind up the ends of the strip can also be created by permanent deformation of these: the latter, either by printing an embossing thereon, also knows by forming one or more suitably placed ribs thereon.
These means can moreover be combined, for example by coating the two sides of the strip with a suitable varnish, to give them greater rigidity, then by then forming the embossing provided therein.
It is also possible, the ends of the strip having been thus stiffened, to impose a permanent curvature on them, at the desired radius.
Finally, it may be advantageous to choose a varnish that remains slightly adhesive or sticky, to the appropriate extent.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, some embodiments of the recording tape which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows in cross section a tape recorder box lined with a treated magnetic tape.
Fig. 2 shows the same end laid flat. Fig. 3 is a section of this end, following line III-III of FIG. 2.
Figs. 4 to 8 show alternative embodiments, FIGS. 5 and 7 being sectional views of the bands shown in FIGS. 4 and 6 respectively.
In fig. 1, the tape recorder coil 1 is lined with the magnetic tape 2, the end of which is treated so that it naturally forms a loop of radius r smaller than the outer radius R of the hub 3 of the coil.
For this purpose, the internal face 4 of the strip simply receives a layer of a varnish creating the desired tension on drying, but remaining however, preferably, slightly adhesive or tacky.
Or, as shown in fig. 3, the end of the strip 2, varnished or not on one or both sides, is printed with an embossing pattern 5.
It is also possible to form therein grooves, grooves or ribs 6 suitably oriented, as indicated in FIGS. 4 to 8.
It remains to treat or shape the outer wall of the hub of the reel in the same way as the end of the bands themselves, to obtain a more energetic self-tightening.
There is nothing to prevent the preparations described from being subjected, not to the band itself, but to the primer with which certain bands are already provided, or to separate primers, intended for then be glued to the ends of the strips.
The treatment provided can be applied to the magnetic bands either during their manufacture or even after their commissioning, thus enhancing these products and making them easier and more pleasant to use.
The natural curvature imparted to the ends of the bands provides a. another practical advantage is that of keeping the terminal turns tight in the full spools, whereas, until now, the free end of the strip tended to escape between the cheeks of the spool.
