Sewing machine presser foot We already know of presser feet for my sewing machine, allowing to perform the hidden stitch for making hems and percalinage or very similar work, presenting a hole for the passage needle and a slit arranged longitudinally with respect to the direction of movement of the fabric to be sewn, a blade whose plane is perpendicular to the bearing face of the foot being placed in this slit and subjected to an elastic action thereon. pushing towards the underside of the foot,
so that a portion of this blade protrudes below the foot to rest against the fabric to be sewn. These feet allow a very good job to be done, but require great attention from the user who must guide his fabric with great care to obtain a satisfactory result.
The present invention relates to a fabric presser foot of the aforementioned type which makes it possible to perform the hidden stitch, in particular on a sewing machine, requiring much less attention from the user. This fabric presser foot is characterized in that its lower face has a groove oblivious to the direction of advance of the fabric, this groove starting from a lateral edge of the foot to approach the middle of the rear edge of said foot, the foot still having an element which can be moved elastically and protrudes under its underside,
this element being arranged near the lateral edge op posed to that from which the groove starts.
The accompanying drawing shows, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of the fabric presser foot which is the subject of the invention and several examples of its use. Figs. 1 and 2 are side views of the foot respectively showing each of the sides thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view of this foot. Fig. 4 is a view of its underside. . Fig. 5 is a section along the line V-V of FIG. 3.
Fig. 6 is a schematic cross section showing how the fabric should be placed under the foot to perform the seam.
Figs. 7 and 8 represent, schematically in section and in plan, the seam which is carried out to give a hidden point. Fig. 9 represents the fabric when the seam is finished. Fig. 10 shows the shape of the point obtained. Fig. 11 shows the making of a hem. Fig. 12 shows the finished hem. Fig. 13 shows the foot used for percalining or grooming.
The cloth presser foot shown consists of a sole 1, the front end 2 of which is raised, this sole 1 being articulated by means of a pin 3 on a part 4 for fixing the foot to a sewing machine. The foot has a slot 5 arranged longitudinally with respect to the direction of movement of the fabric to be sewn, as well as a hole 5a for the passage of the needle. A blade 6, the plane of which is perpendicular to the bearing face of the foot, that is to say to the main plane of part 1, is placed in this slot and subjected to an elastic action pushing it in the direction of the underside of the foot.
This elastic action is exerted by a spring consisting of a steel wire 7 curved in the general shape of a U. The transverse part of this U is engaged in a recess 8 of the blade 6, while the ends of the branches of this U are rigidly fixed to the foot. To this end, the ends of the spring steel wire can be bent and engaged in holes not shown in parts 1 or 4. The branches of the U have a rectilinear part parallel to the slot 5.
The blade 6 also has two tees 9 and 10 arranged perpendicular to its plane and each projecting on the two opposite faces of this blade. These studs 9 and 10 are intended to bear at their ends against the upper face of the sole 1 in order to limit the movement of the blade in the direction of the lower face thereof.
The lower face of the part 1 has a groove 11 oblique with respect to the direction of advance of the fabric. This groove, which is visible in fig. 4, is also shown in dotted lines in FIG. 3.
As can be seen, this groove starts from a side edge 1a of the foot to approach the middle of the rear edge 1c thereof. The section of this groove is generally triangular in shape and is clearly visible in FIG. 5.
The foot also has an elastically displaceable element projecting under its underside. This element is constituted by a leaf spring 12 which extends along the side edge lb which is opposite the edge of which by the groove 11. This leaf spring 12 has a curved end 13 which is engaged in a notch 14 provided. in the front edge of the foot. The other end of this blade 12 is curved over the rear edge 1c of the foot and is fixed by means of a screw 15.
Fig. 6 represents very schematically the foot 1 in the use position and clamping a piece of folded fabric 16 placed on the hole-needle plate 17 of a sewing machine, this plate having or vertures 18 for the passage of the claws of the conveyor , which are not shown in the drawing, nor the needle. To make a hidden stitch, the fabric is folded at least twice, as shown in fig. 6, and the edge of the fold 19 is pressed laterally against the guide blade 6.
The position of the fold under the presser foot is thus determined exactly.
Fig. 7 shows the fabric in the same position as in fig. 6 and the points made by the needle during a zigzag stitch which is visible in FIG. 8.
The stitches 20 are made in the fold 19, so that the thread enters and leaves the same side of the fabric 16 without reaching the other side. When the seam has been completed, the fabric is then folded back to eliminate the fold 19, and FIG. 9 shows in section the shape of the fabric which ends with a folded edge. The location of the fold 19 on the side where the seam is invisible has been indicated by an arrow.
Fig. 10 shows this location on a greatly enlarged scale and is a section passing through two successive points 20 and 21. The sewing is carried out in a known manner by means of a shuttle thread 22 and a needle thread 23. As can be seen, thread 23 enters the top layer of fabric 16 after stitch 20 has been completed. This thread 23 enters and emerges via the lower face of this upper layer of fabric at 24 and 25 without reaching the upper face of this layer of fabric, so that on this face, the point is completely hidden.
The hidden stitch which has been shown in the drawing was obviously an example of use, and it is possible to modify, for example, either the shape of the stitch which does not necessarily have to be zigzag, or the shape of the folds of the fabric.
Fig. 11 precisely shows the making of a hem, FIG. 12 showing the finished concealed stitch hem. As to fig. 13, it shows the foot used for percalinage or grooming, that is to say the fixing of a fabric 26 on a piece of reinforcement 27 such as tailor fabric or Vlieseline (registered trademark) , by making a series of seams 28 parallel to each other over the entire surface of the fabric 26 which is to be applied to the backing piece 27.
Regardless of the kind of fabric or stitch used for making a concealed stitch seam, the presser foot described is advantageous because the groove 11 opposes the lateral displacement of the fabric which usually occurs towards the bottom. rear of the foot, the fabric being thus advanced regularly and automatically under the foot.
In addition, the leaf spring 12 makes it possible to apply against the conveyor the portion of the fabric which is in single or double thickness under the foot, mainly when making hems (fig. 11 and 12), during percalinage or of the mesh (fig. 13), so as to obtain a movement without slipping of the layers of tissue relative to each other.
This therefore results in better guiding of the fabric, since the conveyor drives the fabric both on the side where the latter is in triple or quadruple thickness and on the side where it is in single or double thickness.
