Description

Process for the production of propellants In the production of propellants such as gun and rifle powder and propellants for rockets, the procedure has hitherto been that a mixture of nitrocellulose, nitroglycerine or one or more similar nitrated polyhydric alcohols (nitric acid esters of polyhydric alcohols) and water is used dewatered on heated rollers and gelatinizing the nitrocellulose due to the nitrated polyhydric alcohols.

The gelatinized mixtures, which are rolled out into thin skins, are converted into strip or leaf form using a cutting device, while the gelatinized mass is brought into the desired shape using a press with a correspondingly shaped nozzle to produce tube powder.

This process for producing blowing agents has the disadvantage that the rolling work to dewater the powder mixtures takes a lot of time and energy and also involves a great deal of danger because the masses are sensitive to friction at elevated temperatures and therefore easily ignite. The vapors developed by the nitrated alcohols during the rolling process also cause severe nuisance for the people operating the rolling mill.

In the field of explosives manufacture, d. H. of rapidly reacting explosive mixtures of chemical compounds with shattering and shattering gas development, it has already been possible to avoid the inconveniences associated with the dewatering of the mixture to be processed by rollers in a simple manner by mixing the explosive components in a molten state and then this melt into the molds, e.g. B. for the grenades or bombs, pours.

The transfer of this working principle to the production of propellants, d. H. slowly reacting explosive mixtures of chemical compounds with the development of gas propelling the projectile out of rifle, cannon or rocket barrels, encountered difficulties in particular with propellant charges formed with nitrocellulose and nitrated polyhydric alcohols, since when introducing the water-containing mixture prepared in the usual way, z.

   B. from nitrocellulose and diglycol dinitrate, in ge melted trinitrotoluene or another ge melted nitro body only part of the nitrocellutose gelatinized without the desired homogeneous solution being formed.

On the basis of detailed tests it has now been shown that in the production of molten nitrocellulose and nitrated polyhydric alcohols as well as powder mixtures containing nitro compounds for the production of propellants, the achievement of homogeneous solutions requires that the nitrocellulose enriched with the nitrated polyhydric alcohols have a completely has a certain water content, which must be at least 18% and is preferably measured at 20 to 23 '/' ".

If the water content of the mixture is too low, undissolved lumps remain during the dissolution process, which have a very unfavorable effect on the ballistics of the powder, and on the other hand, if the water content is too high, the melting process takes too long, which is disadvantageous for the stability of the end product.

The tests have also shown that the temperature to be maintained when mixing the nitrocellulose with the other nitrated polyhydric alcohol must be kept low and a temperature of 18 C must not be exceeded. to prevent gelatinization before the nitrocellulose is introduced into the melt and to avoid the undesirable formation of lumps that occurs at excessively high temperatures.

On the basis of these findings, according to the invention for the production of propellants, a mixture containing at least 18% water is prepared from nitrocellulose and another nitric acid ester of a polyhydric alcohol at a temperature of below 18 C, this mixture is introduced into a molten nitro compound and the water evaporates, causing the nitrocellulose to gelatinize.

In this way, not only is the usual rolling work for dewatering the powder mixture in the production of blowing agents avoided, but an easily cast, completely uniform melt can be obtained without any lump formation.

It is advantageous to use a nitrocellulose, the nitrogen content of which is below 12.4%, for the preparation of the mixture of nitrocellulose and the other nitrated polyalcohol, since a nitrocellulose with a nitrogen content higher than 12.4 results in melts, even with low viscosity of the nitrocellulose are very viscous and can therefore not, or only with difficulty, be converted into the desired form and vented.

Furthermore, it is beneficial to regulate the rate of evaporation of the water contained in the mixture of nitrocellulose and other nitrated polyhydric alcohol so that the gelatinization of the nitrocellulose goes parallel to the evaporation of the water and thus a residue-free dissolution of the nitrocellulose in the melt he follows.

Furthermore, with the nitrocellulose to mi cally nitrated polyhydric alcohol can be partially replaced by a plasticizer, eg. B. dibutyl phthalate or a urethane can be replaced. The quantitative ratio of the molten nitro body to the mixture of nitrocellulose and nitrated polyalcohol is expediently chosen to be 1: 1 to 3: 2. Compliance with this quantitative ratio is particularly important when it comes to powder bodies of large dimensions, such as.

   B. rocket propellants, in which the formation of blowholes leading to detonations during the burn must be avoided and also the solidification time of the melts must not take too long despite the large size.

As practice has shown, if the content of the mixture is too low in nitro bodies, such as. B. trinitrotoluene, the achievement of a complete solution of the nitrocellulose and, as a result, a completely homogeneous, easily pourable propellant means very difficult, and with a 60% over increasing content of the mixture of nitro bodies, the melt when cooling after the deformation, especially in the Production of powder bodies of larger dimensions, a strong tendency to form cavities or cracks, and in addition, the solidified mass is easily too brittle and for this reason practically useless.

These phenomena occur not only with trinitrotoluene, but also with other aromatic nitro bodies, such as. B. trinitrophenyl glycol ether or trinitromethyl aniline on.

The cooling of the blowing agent obtained by dissolving the nitrocellulose in molten nitro bodies is expediently carried out while maintaining a temperature which ensures that the powder bodies formed from the homogeneous melt solidify completely free of voids in a very short period of time.

The introduction of the mixture of nitrocellulose and nitrated polyhydric alcohol containing at least 10 water into the molten nitro body is advantageously carried out while maintaining a temperature which exceeds the melting point of the nitro body by about 10 to 20, which results in the dissolution of the nitrocellulose in the molten one Nitro body perfected and accelerated. It is also advisable to act the solution of the nitrocellulose in a vacuum with stirring to facilitate the removal of the air bubbles from the solution.

It has also proven to be beneficial to increase the temperature of the melt formed from the nitro body and the mixture of nitrocellulose and polyalcohol after the evaporation of the water by about 10 C for a short time, thereby reducing the viscosity of the resulting melt and thus allows easier conversion of the melt into the desired shape and also facilitates the complete removal of the air bubbles from the mixture.

The melt obtained from the nitro body and the mixture of nitrocellulose and polyalcohol can also be cooled below its solidification temperature and converted into the desired form in this supercooled state, which offers the advantage that the solidification process, which occurs in these melted powder mixtures, above all in the case of the production of powder bodies with large dimensions or greater wall thicknesses, a very long time, e.g. B. sometimes 20 to 30 hours, takes, largely, e.g.

   B. to a few minutes, and nevertheless the risk of the formation of cavities and irregularities in the crystallization, which occur if the cooling is too rapid, can be avoided with certainty, which adversely affect the ballistics of the powder.

This melt subcooling is based on the fact that the molten powder mixtures have the property, when cooled below the solidification point, to temporarily change into an unstable state in which they are viscous and therefore easily malleable are. The shaping of the melt, which is in the semi-plastic state, can be carried out in the usual way with the aid of extrusion presses and similar devices.

The molten powder mixture is preferably brought into the desired shape shortly before it solidifies, so that the shaped body can solidify at room temperature without any further change in shape. The shaped bodies formed are expediently left to their own devices for a short time at room temperature.

A suitable nitrocellulose for the process according to the invention is above all a nitrocellulose that is subjected to a viscosity reduction by pressure cooking in an autoclave. The pressure cooking is carried out under such conditions that the viscosity is 15 to 25 seconds, and the viscosity is determined by using a 10% solution of nitrocellulose in a mixture of butanol, butyl acetate and toluene in a ratio of 3: 4:

  5 is measured in a Cochius viscometer (7 mm) at 18 C.

For the nitro body, which in the molten state serves to dissolve the nitrocellulose mixed with another nitrated polyalcohol and whose melting point is therefore below the decomposition temperature of the nitrocellulose, i.e. H. below 130 C, aromatic or aliphatic nitro compounds are particularly suitable.

For example, the aromatic nitro bodies used are di- or trinitrotoluene, di- or trinitrobenzene, di- or trinitrophenol, di- or trinitrophenylglycol ether nitrate, tetranitromethylaniline, mononitronaphthalene, trinitronaphthalene, dinitrooxytoluene, pentanitro-diphenylamine,

Trinitrophenilglycine, trinitrophenilethanolamine and, as aliphatic nitro bodies, dinitrodiethanolnitratoxamide, tetranitropentaerythritol, dioxyethylsulphodinitrate. Mixtures of these aliphatic and aromatic nitro bodies can also be used for gelatinizing the nitrocellulose.

As to be mixed with the nitrocellulose nitric acid ester of polyhydric alcohols come z. B. nitroglycerin, diglycol dinitrate and similar alcohol nitrates into consideration.

Example I 53 kg of trinitrotoluene are melted in a kettle provided with a heating jacket. Furthermore, 28 kg of nitrocellulose with a nitrogen content of 12.1% and a viscosity of 20 seconds, measured in 3% acetone solution according to Cochius, are intimately mixed at 14 C with 18 kg of diglycol dinitrate in an aqueous emulsion. This mixture is freed from excess water in a centrifuge to such an extent that it still has a moisture content of 22%.

The nitrocellulose thus enriched with nitrated polyhydric alcohol is now comminuted in the usual way and then slowly introduced into the molten trinitrotoluene with vigorous mixing. The melting kettle is then closed and placed under vacuum so that the water gradually evaporates. Care is taken to ensure that the two processes of evaporation of the water and the gelatinization of the nitrocellulose run in parallel, since too rapid evaporation of the water is a hindrance to gelatinization.

The homogeneous, easily castable melt obtained is converted into the desired powder body shape in the usual way. Example 1I 530 kg of trinitrotoluene are melted in a kettle provided with a heating jacket at 80 C and 260 kg of nitrocellulose with a nitrogen content of 12.1% with 180 kg of diglycol dinitrate in an aqueous emulsion are intimately at one temperature mixed at 13 C.

The nitrocellulose enriched with diglycol dinitrate is freed from excess water in a centrifuge to such an extent that it still has a humidity of 221/1. The water-moist nitrocellulose enriched with diglycol dinitrate is then pre-crushed in the usual way and then slowly added to the melted trinitrotoluene with vigorous stirring. Finally, the melting kettle is closed and placed under vacuum so that the water evaporates from the nitrocellulose and this is dissolved.

Example III 100 kg of trinitrotoluene, which has a melting point of around 80 ° C., is melted in a 300 liter kettle equipped with a stirrer and surrounded by a heating jacket fed with hot water. 70 kg of nitrocellulose enriched with dinitrodiglycol in a ratio of 3: 2 at 16 ° C. and mixed with this 30% water containing 12% nitrogen are added to the melt in measured successive portions.

By maintaining a temperature of 100, the water is made to evaporate, to the extent that the water evaporates, the nitrocellulose dissolves so that a homogeneous melt is formed after the water has evaporated completely.

For shaping, the molten mass is placed in a temperature of, for. B. 25 brought form and maintains this temperature during the first name and also when the mass cools down. In the case of powder bodies of large dimensions, e.g. B. cylindrical rocket propellants large diam sers and considerable length, it is also useful to avoid the formation of cavities in the body to allow its cooling from bottom to top and from the outside to the inside.

Example IV 53 parts of trinitrotoluene with a melting point of about 80 ° C. are melted in a melting kettle equipped with a heating jacket and stirrer by heating to 80 ° C., and from 28 parts of nitrocellulose with 120 / "nitrogen, 18 parts Diglycol dinitrate and 1% stabilizer, a mixture with a water content of 23% is prepared at 16 C. This mixture is then added to the molten trinitrotoluene and the whole is converted into a homogeneous melt at 80 C.

This melt, which has a melting point of about 60 ° C., is cooled to about 30 ° C. in a cooled pipe branched off from the melting vessel within a period of about 10 minutes. After this cooling, the mixture still has plastic properties and thus physically represents a liquid that can be converted into any shape. For example, it can be brought into the shape of a tube using an extruder, which can be done in a continuous process.

The powder tubes thus formed are divided into the desired length and a short time, about a few, z. B. 5 minutes at room temperature of 20 C left to itself. In the process, the stable state of the mass of the tube wall changes into the stable state. It is advisable to keep this transition time as short as possible in order to prevent deformation of the shaped powder body due to residual plasticity.
