Description

Drive device for an elongated workpiece
The present invention relates to a driving device for an elongated part such as rod, cable, bar, insulated wire, comprising two endless transmission chains having adjacent strands intended to grip the part and to drive it, and at least one pair of opposed longitudinal raceways with which said adjacent strands of the chains engage, these raceways being urged towards the part by elastic means, links which support and stress the two chains one towards the other simultaneously, these links having two identical articulated mechanisms each comprising two elements which are connected to one another and placed on opposite sides of the part.

The device according to the invention is characterized in that the two aforementioned elements of each articulated mechanism are capable of moving simultaneously and elastically towards one another, and of moving away from one another under the effect of variations in thickness of the part and in that each mechanism is capable of moving independently of the other.

The term cable used in this memo has been adopted for convenience and clarity of drafting and should be given a very broad meaning, the device not being limited to driving electric wires and cables, but is lending, on the contrary, to the training of a large number of elongated bodies, that is to say, whose diameter is small in relation to their length, such as bars, rods, ropes, etc.

In the embodiment shown and more particularly in FIGS. 1 to 4, the reference 10 designates a drive device whose essential mechanisms are drive chains 12, twin tracks 14 for the chains 12, articulation mechanisms 16 for resiliently supporting the twin tracks 14 and actuating devices 18. The devices which have just been enumerated are mounted with others on a vertical frame 28 carried by a base 30.

   Drive chains
The drive chains 12, which are preferably roller chains, are in the present case constituted by an upper chain 12a and a lower chain 12b which are identical and mounted in the same way, so that we will be satisfied with the description in detail the first. The chain 1 2a is supported by toothed pinions 20 and 22 wedged on shafts 24 and 26 which are rotatably mounted on the frame 28. More specifically, the shaft 26 is rotatably mounted on the frame 28 by means of ball bearings 32, (fig. 2) while the shaft 24 of the other chain sprocket is mounted in the same way on the frame.

The chain 12a is composed of links 34 each of which comprises lateral plates 36 (Fig. 5, 7 and 8), the ends of which are connected to the neighboring ends of the following plates by pins 38 passing through rollers 40 mounted between the coupled plates. Every other link of the chain 12a, referenced 34a, carries elements serving on the one hand so that the chain moves with low friction on its rolling track 14, and on the other hand so that it holds the cable securely. s to train. To this end, the plates of each of the links 34a are provided with outer wings 44 (fig. 5) on which is mounted by means of screws 46, a carriage 48 carrying opposing journals 50 which support the inner cup 52 of bearings. balls 54 having outer rings 56.

On the wings 44 of the plates 36 of each second link 34a is also fixed, by the same screws 46, a support plate 58 (fig. 5) which in the example is flat and extends in the longitudinal direction of the chain. chain, between the pins 38 connecting this link to the neighboring links (fig. 8). On the plate 58 of each second link 34a of the chain 12a is mounted a clamping element or a gasket 60 which will be described in more detail later.

As has already been mentioned, the lower chain 1 2b is in all respects similar and mounted in the same way as the upper chain 12a, and the essential parts of the lower chain 12b and those used to mount it are referenced on the drawing, when necessary or useful, by the same numerical reference, to which the index b has been added.

The sections 62 and 64 of the drive chains 12a and 12b which pass on the corresponding tracks 14 are capable of gripping and driving the cable placed between the chains and will, for the clarity of the description, be called the active strands of the chains. chains.

So that the active strands 62 and 64 of the chains can perform the functions assigned to them, namely: clamping and driving the cable between them, the twin channels 14 are urged towards each other, as described above. in more detail below. The two chains 12a and 12b are normally kept tensioned by tension devices 66 and 66b which are identical, so that only one of them will be described in detail. The chain tensioning device 66 comprises a toothed idler pinion 68 (fig. 1) on which the chain 12a passes and which is mounted for rotation by means of ball bearings 70 (fig. 4) on the pin 72 of the chain. an angled lever 76 articulated at 77 to the frame 28. The other arm 78 of the angled lever 76 is articulated at 80 to the rod 82 of a piston operating in a cylinder 84 capable of rotating at 86 on a support 88 fixed to the frame 28 .

The cylinder 84 is preferably double-acting, being, for this purpose, provided at its opposite ends 90 and 92 with orifices (not shown) making it possible to put these ends of the cylinder alternately to the exhaust and to connect them to a source of pressurized fluid using a suitable intermediate valve. Thus, by actuating this valve to exhaust the end 90 of the cylinder and send pressurized fluid to its other end 92, the pinion 68 takes up the slack in the chain 12a and keeps the latter taut. Conversely, by actuating the valve so as to exhaust the end 92 of the cylinder and to admit pressurized fluid into its end 90, the chain relaxes.

As previously mentioned, the tensioning device 66b is in all respects similar to the device 66a, the main parts of the device 66b are designated by the same reference numeral as the corresponding parts of the device 66a, to which has been added the index b.

In the example shown and described, the active strands 62 and 64 of the chains 1 2a and 1 2b drive the cable from left to right, in FIG. 1, the chain sprockets 22 and 22b being driven respectively in the senestorsum and dextrorsum direction (fig. 1), while the sprockets 20 and 20b turn crazy. For this drive, the shafts 26 and 26b of the pinions 22 and 22b carry identical gear wheels 100 and 102 meshing with each other (fig. 1 and 2) and the shaft 26b is coupled to a appropriate source of motive power (not shown).

   Twin lanes
The drive device 10 comprises two pairs of twin channels 14a and 14b mounted in tandem which are in all respects similar, so that it will suffice to describe a pair, in particular the input pair 14a. In this case, the channels making up the input pair 14a are identical, except that they are mounted head-to-tail. The upper track of the pair 1 4a extends along the active strand 62 of the upper chain 1 2a and comprises at its lower part over its entire length opposing raceways 104 and 106 on which the outer rings 56 of the bearings roll. opposites 54 of the second links 34a of the active strand 62 (Figs. 5 and 7).

This upper track is also suitably clear at its base, at 108, between the raceways 104 and 106, so that the links 34 of the strand 62 can pass freely. In addition, the entry end 110 of the upper track and the raceways 104 and 106 which it carries are suitably curved (fig. 1) so that the chain 12a passing from the pinion 20 on this track s' approaching the taxiways 104 and 106 along a tangent and engaging there very gradually.

The lower track of the pair 14a has, on the top, similar raceways 104 'and 106' on which run the outer rings of the opposed ball bearings 54b provided on each of the links 34b of the active strand 64 of the lower chain 12b (fig. 5 and 6). This lower track is also suitably cleared at 108 ', between the opposing tracks 104' and 106 ', so that the links 34b of the strand 64 can pass without touching it. In addition, the entry end 110 'of this lower track and the tracks 104' and 106 'which it carries are suitably curved (fig. 1), so that the lower chain 12b, passing from the pinion 20b on this track, can approach tangentially the running tracks 104 'and 106'.

Since the other pair of twin lanes 1 4b on the outlet side is in all respects similar to that which has just been described, the main parts of the twin lanes 1 4b have been referenced in FIGS.

1, 3 and 4 by the same reference numerals as the corresponding parts of the tracks 14a, except that the index b has been added thereto. However, the twin tracks 14b are reversed with respect to the twin tracks 14a (Fig. 1) in that the curved ends 110b and 110b 'of the tracks 14b and the raceways they carry are directed in the opposite direction of so that the upper and lower chains leave the upper and lower tracks of the track 14b tangentially to pass on the neighboring chain sprockets 22 and 22b.

   Articulated mechanism
The articulated mechanisms 16 intended to elastically support the twin tracks 14a and 14b on the frame 28 being, in this case, similar in all respects, it will suffice to describe only one in detail, for example the mechanism 16a intended for the tracks. input 14a. The articulated mechanism 16a connects the upper and lower tracks of the pair 14a to the frame in such a way that each of the tracks can move towards and away from the other and that it can also swing around any of its tracks. transverse axes. To this end, an upwardly directed tab 116 provided on the upper track near its inlet end 110 is articulated, at 118, to an arm 120 (FIG. 1) which is keyed to a transverse axis 124 mounted for rotation. in the frame 28.

Near the rear end 126 of the upper track is articulated at 128, a link 130, the other end of which rotates at 132 on an arm 136 keyed to a transverse axis 140 which is rotatably mounted on the frame 28. The upper track is thus suspended from the frame 28, by the elements 120, 130 and 136, so that it can, as mentioned above, move towards and away from the lower track to which it is paired, thus than rotate around any of its transverse axes.

The lower track of the pair of tracks 14a is carried by the frame 28 by means of an articulated mechanism similar to that provided for the upper track, so that the main parts of the lower articulated mechanism have been designated by the same references. as the corresponding parts of the articulated mechanism of the upper track, except that the index '(prime) is added to it.

The articulated mechanism 16a which resiliently supports the twin tracks 14a is also interconnected so that the latter are at all times obliged to occupy symmetrical positions with respect to the axis of travel or to a common plane xx in which the fittings of clamp 60, 60b fixed to the active strands 62 and 64 meet in the absence of a cable between them (fig. 1). To this end, the transverse axes 124 and 124 'are located in a plane parallel to the horizontal common plane xx and which extend perpendicular to the vertical or fixed plane in which the chains 1 2a and 12b are contained, carry at the rear of the frame 28, control arms 142 and 144 respectively which are connected by a floating articulation.

Thus, the control arm 144 carries at its end 146 a rotary roller 148 which is housed between the branches of the forked end 150 of the other control arm 142 (see FIG. 1A). The transverse axes 140 and 140 'are also located in a plane parallel to the common honzontal plane x-x. They also extend at right angles to the vertical or fixed plane containing the chains 12a and 12b and carry at the rear of the frame 28 other control arms 152 and 154 respectively, which are coupled in the same way as the control arms 142 and 144.

The transverse axes 124, 124 'and 140, 140' are preferably equally spaced from the common x-x plane, as shown in FIG. 1, and under these conditions, the rotating elements of the floating joints between the arms 142, 144 and 152, 154 are preferably located in the x-x plane when the active strands 62 and 64 touch or almost touch.

Thanks to the articulation mechanism which has just been described, any movement of one or the other of the twin paths, whether it is an actual movement or a simple tilt or both, is transmitted to the other channel, so that the two channels at all times occupy a symmetrical position on either side of the xx plane.

As has already been mentioned, the articulated mechanism 16b of the pair of conjugate pathways 14b, located towards the outlet, is in all points similar to the mechanism 16a which has just been described, except that the mechanism 16b is inverted due to the inverted arrangement of the twin lanes 14b. The main parts of the articulated mechanism 16b have been designated by the same reference numerals as the corresponding parts of the mechanism 16a, except that they have been added the index b.

   Track actuating devices
The actuators 18 for the twin lane pairs 14a and 14b are, in the present case, similar in all respects, so that only the actuators 18a for the twin lanes d have been described in detail. 'entry 14a. These actuating devices 18a are constituted by cylinder and piston mechanisms which, in this case, cooperate with the articulated mechanism 16a to resiliently urge the twin tracks 14a towards each other in order to exert on the strands. active 62 and 64 force necessary to firmly tighten the cable passing between them. These mechanisms 18a are all identical and each include a cylinder 160 in which moves a piston 162 comprising a rod 164.

The upper cylinders 160 are articulated at 166 to supports 168 fixed to the upper part and to the rear of the frame 28, while the lower cylinders are articulated at 170 to supports 172 fixed to a platform 174 mounted on the frame. base 30. The frame 28 is cut at 175 to provide a certain freedom of movement for the cylinders 160 (Figs. 1 and 3). The upper cylinder piston rods 164 are hinged at 176 to the arms 178 and 180 which, in this case, are integral with the control arms 142 and 152 respectively and therefore rotate with the tilt arms respectively. higher 120 and 136.

The rods 164 of the lower pistons are hinged at 182 to the arms 184 and 186 which are also integral with the control arms 144 and 154 respectively and which therefore rotate at the same time as the lower rocker arms 120 '. and 136 'respectively.

Since the actuators 1 8b of the twin tracks 14b and their coupling elements are identical to the actuators 18a and the coupling elements of the twin tracks 14a, the main parts of the devices 1 8b and their Elements for coupling to the tracks 14b have been designated by the same reference numerals as the corresponding parts of the devices 18a and of their elements for coupling to the tracks 14a, except that the index b has been added thereto.

The cylinders 160 and 160b are provided at their opposite ends with orifices 188 and 190 which allow alternately to exhaust and to connect these ends to a suitable source of pressurized fluid, compressed air, for example, by through a control valve. By actuating this valve so as to exhaust the cylinders 160 and 160b through their orifices 190 and at the same time to admit pressurized fluid through their orifices 188, the two pairs of twin passages 14a and 14b simultaneously approach the active strands 62 and 64 so that these strands clamp the cable placed between them.

Conversely, by actuating the valve so as to exhaust the cylinders through their orifices 188 and at the same time admit pressurized fluid through their orifices 190, the two pairs of twin passages 14a and 14b move apart simultaneously, and therefore, the active strands 62 and 64 move apart, provided that the tension devices of the chains 66 and 66b are kept in action. Alternatively, ports 188 of cylinders 160 and 160b could be connected, through a leak-type regulator (not shown), to a source of pressurized fluid, so that the fluid pressure remains constant at the various ends. of the cylinders, even in the event that a projection on the cable driven by the device would momentarily separate the tracks.

To engage a new cable between the active strands 62 and 64 so that it is then driven by them, it suffices simply to separate the two pairs of conjugate paths 14a and 14b in the manner which has just been described, without make chain tensioning devices 66 and 66b inoperative. On the other hand, the pull chains 12a and 12b can be easily removed from their respective sprockets and their respective tracks to examine them, repair them or replace links or parts therein, by removing the tracks and making at the same chain tensioning devices inoperative time.

As shown in Figs. 1, 7 and 8, the pull chains 1 2a and 1 2b are arranged such that the clamping linings 60 of their links face each other along the strands 62 and 64 so as to tighten the cable under the best possible conditions. to train. When a cable has been introduced between the active strands 62 and 64 of the pull chains 12a and 12b and the tracks 14a and 14b have approached against the active strands and exert pressure on them, the driving device can be put into operation. drive by engaging the transmission rotating the chain sprocket shaft 26b (fig. 1 and 2).

The drive device described lends itself particularly well, without however being limited thereto, to the drive of cables s comprising a conductive core c and an insulating sheath i (FIG. 5). To prevent the insulation of the cable s from being marked as it passes through the drive device, the clamping gaskets 60 and 60b of the second links of the drive chains may be of any suitable elastic material, resistant to wear. and having a high coefficient of friction. Thus, these linings could be made of plastic or a material similar to rubber. These linings can be fitted in a suitable manner by placing their backs against the plates 58 and 58b provided on each second link of the chains 1 2a and 12b.

In addition, the back of these linings is preferably recessed at 200 over the entire length between the opposite edges (fig. 5 and 5A), so that they can flex under the pressure exerted by the cable passing between them. , at least an amount corresponding to the depth of the recesses 200, so as to firmly embrace an appreciable fraction of the periphery of the cable s (fig.

5A). Thus, although the pressure exerted on the cable by the numerous clamping gaskets of the active strands is relatively low, which is one of the peculiarities inherent in traction drive devices, this pressure is further reduced considerably by the extent peripheral of the contact surface between the cable and the gaskets which hold it, which has the effect that the insulation of the latter will hardly be marked, even if the drive device were forced to exert an exceptional tensile force on the cable to drive it.

The presence of ball bearings on the links of the drive chains causing them to roll on the tracks and, therefore, for the transmission of the clamping forces which the linings exert on the cable along the active strands is very advantageous. This is how the active parts of the chains roll on the tracks thanks to these bearings, with a minimum of friction, so that the drive device works as uniformly as possible with a minimum of driving force. In addition, contrary to what one might expect, the chain link ball bearings show surprisingly low wear even after prolonged service despite their function of transmitting the clamping forces from the tracks. to the linings along the active strands of the chains.

The mounting of the ball bearings and the clamping linings on each second link of the two drive chains and the position of the ball bearings whose axes are located between the ends of the linings and between the articulations of the corresponding links on the adjacent links, (fig.

7 and 8) are also very advantageous in that the ball bearings when rolling on their tracks do not in the slightest oppose the inclination between the links and the adjacent links, and in fact serve as a fulcrum , to the extent permitted by the tension of the chains, which results in the clamps having the freedom of movement to react automatically to any increased resistance of the cable as it is driven forward, pivoting so as to jam the latter with sufficient force to safely maintain a uniform progression of the cable.

Likewise, this limited freedom of movement of the links of the tensioned chains during the movement of their ball bearings on the raceways at the rounded guide ends 14a of the latter (fig. 1), allows their clamping linings to approach the cable to be driven to tilt more or less to come into uniform contact with the latter, before exerting all their clamping force on it.

The deflection describes the tracks of each of the pairs, either by overall displacement or by inclination or both, and their obligatory permanent symmetrical arrangement with respect to the xx plane, are obviously very advantageous, not only because the driving device can instantly adapt itself, without any adjustment, to the drive of cables or others of different diameters along the same axis of advance, but also in that they allow the occasional passage of protuberances or peripheral sizes without appreciably reducing the traction exerted on the cable.

Although the drive device shown and described comprises pairs of tracks mounted in tandem operating identically on successive sections of the active strands of the chain, it goes without saying that it could only comprise a pair of tracks for the active strands of the chains.
