Description

Method for electrical resistance flash welding The invention relates to a method for electrical resistance flash welding, in particular of rails, beams and similar work pieces made of steel, for example rail steel, alloyed structural steels, stainless steels and light metals. The invention is particularly suitable for welding workpieces with a large cross section.

When flash welding steel, the work pieces connected to the welding power source are first preheated at the ends to be welded by bringing them into contact with one another several times. The outermost parts of these ends become incandescent. The workpiece ends are then burned off by pushing the workpieces together, with the material evaporating at the point of contact and the feed being maintained for a certain time. Immediately afterwards, the workpieces are compressed together with the welding current switched off, whereby the actual weld occurs. In doing so, metal is squeezed out at the welding point, creating a bulge (welding burr) which is then removed.

When flash-butt welding aluminum, it is burned off and compressed without prior preheating.

When burning off according to the previous method, the boundary between the semi-liquid and the plastic state and the boundary between the plastic and the solid state of the workpiece due to the conduction of heat in the direction of the welding point away from at least the speed of burning off. The dimensions of the plastic and semi-liquid zones measured perpendicular to the surfaces to be welded were accordingly at least as large after burning as before burning. In the upsetting process following the burning off, the viscous material is squeezed out of the weld (it will be removed later), with the entire plastic zone of the compressed workpieces previously being deformed into a bulge.

The area of this bulbous zone usually had to be re-annealed in order to achieve a good structure.

According to the present invention, welds can be achieved which, without post-annealing, result in a structure of excellent static and dynamic strength data that is very similar to the initial state, and which require little mechanical (machining) post-processing. According to this method, after preheating, the burn-off is carried out with such a high advance speed and current strength that the burn-off and the interfaces between the plastic and semi-liquid zones penetrate faster than the interfaces between the solid and plastic zones.

After the burn-off, it is suddenly compressed with such great force and speed that all of the material of the semi-liquid phase is squeezed out at the welding point.

In this process, the temperature gradient perpendicular to the surfaces to be welded is greater after burning than after preheating. Accordingly, the dimension of the preheated zones extending perpendicular to the surfaces to be welded decreases at both workpiece ends during the burning process. This dimension of the plastically deformable zone can, for example, decrease to less than 10 mm during the burning process.

Since when upsetting the upsetting force and speed are selected so high that the entire semi-liquid material is squeezed out of the welding point, this material then forms an annular bead that is only connected to the welding point on a relatively narrow web. This ring-shaped bead can be easily removed. The high upsetting pressure ensures that all of the material, which has been thermally disadvantageously changed when it is burned off, does not remain at the welding point. In particular, however, under the effect of this high compression pressure, the material of the work piece ends to be united at the welding point is to a certain extent forged together.

This results in a weld joint structure that is very similar to the initial state, with excellent values for static and dynamic strength, without the need for post-annealing. Despite the effect of the high upsetting pressure, the welding point is not significantly deformed after the welding is complete, because the plastic zone is relatively short and the semi-liquid material is completely squeezed out.

The inventive method is described in the following in comparison with the known method with reference to the drawing, for example. 1 shows the temperature distribution during flash welding of two railroad tracks after preheating, FIGS. 2 and 3 the corresponding temperature distribution after burning and after upsetting in the previous method, FIGS. 4 and 5, FIGS 3 corresponding stages in the method according to the invention, FIG. 6 shows a feed and welding current diagram of the method according to the invention.

In Fig. 1 to 5, R1 and R2 are each a railroad track shown in longitudinal section designated net. 1 to 5 are drawn to the same scale, which applies in particular to the distances between the lines T1 to T3, which indicate surfaces perpendicular to the plane of the drawing, to which certain temperatures and corresponding limit states of the Ma material are assigned.

The material is liquid between the boundaries indicated by lines T3 on both sides of the contact surface K, and semi-liquid between T1 and T3 (corresponding to the state of the area which is delimited in the iron-carbon diagram by the solidus and liquidus lines). Between T1 and T,., The material is plastic.

When flash-welding is reached at the end of the pre-heating process about the temperature distribution shown in Fig. 1. During the subsequent burn-off, with the previous method, the depth T1-T, the plastic zone and the depth T1-T3 of the semi-liquid zone on both sides of the welding point either remained constant or increased (FIG. 2). The distance T1-T2 was at the end of the burning process z. B. 20-40 mm. If the compression was then carried out in the usual way, the zone between the two boundaries T2 was deformed in the manner of FIG. 3, and when the rail was shortened, a weld bead G was created, which later had to be painstakingly milled off or ground off.

In the method to be described with reference to FIGS. 4 to 6, the burn-off process is carried out with such a high feed rate and current strength that the burn-off advances faster than the heating, so that the distances T1 T on both sides of the contact point K , and T1-T3 become progressively smaller, for example shrink to about 10 mm or less, so that at the end of the burn-off process there is approximately the temperature distribution shown in FIG. 4. The upsetting process is then initiated, which is carried out suddenly with such great force and speed that at least the entire semi-liquid zone from T1 on the left to T1 on the right is squeezed out of the welding point.

The welding does not take place in the semi-liquid area, but in the plastic zones T1-T, at relatively low temperatures. The bulging deformation remains limited to the smaller distance from T, left to T, right of the contact point K (FIG. 5). This narrow zone lies within a glowing ring G, to which the material of the two squeezed out semi-liquid zones is deformed. The cross-section of this ring has approximately the cross-sectional shape of a mushroom, so that the ring can be easily knocked off. The small annular bead that remains can be planed off in one go if the planer is used while the material is still at a temperature of around 850 C.

In the case of rail steel, for example, the temperature of the semi-liquid zone T1-T3 is 1150 to 1250 C and the temperature of the plastic zone T1-T2 is 900 to 1150 C.

6 shows the diagram of the advance (mm) over time as the abscissa in the upper field and the diagram of the welding current (amp.) In the lower field when two rails with a cross-section of approximately 10,000 mm are welded together. At point A, the preheating is completed, which is brought about in the usual way by periodically touching the workpieces. At point B, the burning process begins, which takes place at a feed rate of around 1.2 mm / sec along a path of around 15 to 20 mm. So about 8 mm have burned off from each workpiece when the sudden upsetting starts at point C. With this compression, the feed speed rises suddenly to around 1.5-2 m / sec.

The path taken to point D is about 5 mm. This first part of the upsetting process squeezes out the semi-liquid zones of the two workpieces. From D to F the second part of the upsetting process, lasting about 6-7 seconds, follows, which forges the welding zone, and in which the still deformable narrow zones on both sides of the weld seam (Fig. 5 from T2 left to 7 2 right) can be forged together under a pressure of 5-10 kg / mm2 and only slightly deformed. The current is already switched off at point E.

The feed rate between D and F is given by the flow rate of the material in the plastic zones; it therefore decreases rapidly with progressive forging and cooling. The weld seam enclosed by the squeezed out ring G (FIG. 5) naturally solidifies last and is therefore subject to a high forging pressure immediately before solidification.

The rapid burn-off is particularly important for aluminum alloys, e.g. B. Anticorodal, of crucial importance. The burning speed is, for example, up to 6 mm / sec and the burning path reaches 60 mm, for example. In the compression immediately following the burning, pressures of 20 to 25 kg / mm2 are used.
