Thermoplastic injection molding machine
The present invention relates to a machine for molding a thermoplastic material by injection, comprising a softening chamber and a rotary screw conveyor member mounted in said chamber for transporting said material from the inlet end to the outlet end of. the chamber and axially movable therein to act as a plunger to inject material from said chamber into a mold. In machines of this type, difficulties are encountered in using a single screw as a conveyor member because a single screw cannot be effectively used as a plunger for the injection of the thermoplastic material into the mold due to the because during the injection stroke the thermoplastic material tends to flow back along the screw.
To overcome this difficulty, a twin screw conveyor has been proposed, the two screws meshing together and rotating in the same direction.
The use of a twin screw conveyor complicates the construction and inevitably increases the cost price. The aim of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks, and to this end, the machine according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a ring slidably mounted in the chamber in front of the conveyor member. The arrangement being such that the ring is moved by the material into a position in which it opens a passage allowing this thermoplastic material to flow into the outlet end of the chamber during the rotary movement of the conveyor member and that it is moved to another position in which it closes this passage and prevents the thermoplastic material from flowing back along the conveyor member during the axial injection movement of the latter.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment and a variant of the machine according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a partial axial section of this embodiment, showing the various members in one position.
Fig. 2 is a section on II-II of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section similar to that of FIG. 1, showing the organs in another position.
Fig. 4 is a section along IV-IV of FIG. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section similar to that of FIG. 1, of the variant.
The embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 4 comprises a screw conveyor member 5 mounted to rotate and slide axially in a softening chamber 6 of the molding machine, of cylindrical shape. This chamber communicates with an injection nozzle 6a through which the thermoplastic material is to be injected into a mold, in the known manner. This chamber is heated by a series of heating elements (not shown) to maintain the thermoplastic material passing through this chamber at a certain degree of plasticity.
The conveyor member 5 comprises a core around which is wound a helical net 5a whose outer diameter is such that the net is tightly slidably fitted in the chamber 6. The front end of the conveyor member is tapered at 5c and has a threaded hole 5b in which is screwed a rod having a threaded part 7b and integral with a cylindrical intermediate part 7a carrying a head 7 of generally spherical shape. The head 7 has an external diameter equal to that of the core of the conveyor member, while the cylindrical part 7a has a smaller diameter. Thus, between the spherical head 7 and the conical end 5c of the conveyor there is an annular recess 8.
To facilitate the flow of the thermoplastic material forwards beyond the spherical head 7, the latter has a series of grooves 7d extending in the direction of the axis of the chamber and situated in the extension of grooves 7c cut in the cylindrical part 7a, these grooves 7c, 7d being spaced circumferentially around the spherical head 7 and the cylindrical part 7a respectively and having their bottoms inclined, that is to say towards the axis of the chamber 6, in the direction of flow of the thermoplastic material, as shown in dotted lines in FIGS. 1 and 3.
A ring 9 housed in the annular recess 8 is mounted, narrowly sliding, in the chamber 6.
The bore of the ring 9 is of a diameter greater than that of the cylindrical part 7a and it is tapered outwardly at each end of the ring at 9a and 9b, the angle of the cone of the surface 9b corresponding to that of the end Sc of the conveyor member, so that the ring can sit tightly against this conical end 5c, when the various parts are in the positions shown in FIG. 3.
In operation, the thermoplastic material is brought into the chamber 6, then it is moved from the inlet end to the outlet end of the chamber 6 by the rotation of the conveyor 5. The material pushes the ring 9 towards the end. 'forward and passes freely through the convergent-divergent passage formed between the ring 9, the conical front of the member 5, the cylindrical part 7a and the head 7. This ring floats in an intermediate position (fig. 1) between the spherical head 7 and the conical end Sc of the conveyor member, since the pressures of the material on both sides of the ring 9 are balanced. When the outlet end of the chamber 6 is filled with thermoplastic material, the conveyor member is driven forward to inject the material through the nozzle 6a into a mold.
During the injection stroke of the conveyor member, the ring 9 is pushed back by the material and the front conical end Sc engages with the ring 9 (fig. 3) which thus closes the passage and prevents material from being forced back along the conveyor member.
In the variant shown in FIG. 5, the softening chamber comprises a front part and a rear part formed respectively in two elements 6b and 6c connected together in a removable manner by connection flanges 6d, forming a seal disposed near the front end Sc of the member transporter 5 when the latter is in the retracted position. Thus, the front part 6b of the chamber can be easily changed and replaced with parts of different internal diameters in order to vary the volumetric capacity of the chamber according to the volume and / or the pressure of the thermoplastic material required for a particular injection.
The front part of the chamber has an internal diameter greater than that of the rear part and a greater capacity than the outlet end of the corresponding section of the chamber of the first embodiment (fig. 1). It is therefore necessary to use a ring of larger external diameter, but the internal diameter of the ring and the external diameters of the conveyor member 5 and of the spherical head 7 remain unchanged.
Means, not shown, make it possible to produce the rotary and axial movements of the conveyor member.
It should be noted that the shape of the ring 9 and that of the end 5c of the conveyor member could be modified to meet various requirements.
