Bedframe
The present invention relates to a bed frame comprising a hinged head section and a hinged foot section, and a hydraulic control unit arranged to selectively move one and / or the other of these sections about the axes. of said. hinges. Such a frame can be used, for example, for invalids' beds or hospital beds, as well as for ordinary beds.
This bed frame according to the invention is characterized in that said control comprises two double-acting hydraulic cylinders, a reversible pump driven by an electric motor and arranged to send a pressurized fluid to said cylinders, linkages connecting the cylinders to said sections of head and foot, the pump ensuring in. one direction raising said sections of the frame, and in the opposite direction lowering said sections, the control further comprising a normally closed valve disposed in each of the cylinders and arranged to maintain the fluid in the cylinder and therefore the sections in a chosen adjustment position, electro-sensitive means arranged to open said valves, and means.
control arranged to simultaneously energize at least one of said electro-sensitive means and said motor driving the pump.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the bed frame which is the subject of the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a side view of the head section of the bed.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a middle section and the foot section.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the head section.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the foot section.

Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the bed control.
Fig. 7 is a plan view corresponding to FIG. 6.
Fig. 8 is the electrical diagram of the control.
Fig. 9 is a section, on a larger scale, of a control member.
Fig. 10 is an end view of a bed comprising said embodiment.
The bed shown includes a main frame 10 having legs 12 near each of its corners. The feet. 12 can be used as a support if the bed is used without the conventional head and foot panels.
On the longitudinal sides of the frame 10 are riveted plates 14 (Fig. 1) and 16 (Fig. 2) opposite.
These plates rigidly support two side pieces 18 which constitute the middle section of the bed frame supporting the mattress. The parts constituting the frame 10, that is to say the middle section and the head and foot sections which are described later are preferably steel angles.
The head section 20, U-shaped in plan view, is hinged to the plates 14. The head section has rounded corners with reinforcing corner pieces 22 (Fig. 3) for the purpose of strengthen the structure of the latter. Guards 24 for the mattress are attached to the head section and the foot section to prevent displacement of the mattress (not shown) as the bed sections are moved.
The head section 20 can be moved around the rivet axes 26 between a low position and a high position shown in FIG. I, by a hydraulic cylinder and a linkage which will be described later. It can also be locked in any intermediate position between the aforementioned extreme positions, as will be seen.
In its low position, the head section 20 is arranged in a plane parallel to that of the frame 10, this section is held above the latter, by means of parts. spacers 28 carried by section 20 to maintain the desired parallelism relationship. Section 20 also includes reinforcing cross members 30 to ensure the rigidity of the assembly.
A shaft 32 is mounted transversely to the frame
10. I1 is held by U-shaped collars 34 allowing it to rotate around its axis. This shaft is connected to the head section 20 by two links 36, 38 fixed to a pivot, on one side, and by two other links 38, 40 fixed to a pivot, on the other side. The rods 38 are identical. The rods 36 and 40 perform the same function and the rod 40 comprises a lever articulated to the piston rod 42 of a hydraulic cylinder 44.
The links 36 and 40 are welded to the shaft 32 (Fig. 3) and the links 38 are each pivotally connected at their upper end to the side pieces of the head section 20. The cylinder 44 pivots at 46 on the frame 10. and it is supplied with pressurized fluid via pipes 50, 52 from a control unit actuated by an electric motor 48, as will be seen below. The control group comprises this electric motor, a pump and a reservoir intended to compensate for the difference in volume produced by the piston rods in the cylinders, as is well known.
It can be seen from the above that the reciprocating movement of the piston rod 42 produces, through the links 36, 38, 40 and the shaft 32, the up and down tilting of the section. head 20 around its pivot axis 26.
The foot section 54 (Figs. 3 and 4) comprises a U-piece 58 hinged to two longitudinal pieces 56 which are pivotally connected by rivets 60 to the opposing plates 16. The main frame 10 also includes opposed suspended plates 62, fixed to the frame, and rods 64 are respectively pivotally connected at their inner end to these plates and at their central end to the transverse branch of the U-piece 58.
A shaft 66 is mounted on the frame 10 by U-shaped collars 68. It is welded to links 70 and 72, the latter comprising a lever connected to a piston rod 74 of a cylinder 76, the latter being connected to its turn to the control unit 48 through lines 78 and 80. The links 70 and 72 are connected to the parts 56 of the foot section by links 82. The cylinder 76 is pivotally mounted on a plate 86 fixed to the main frame 10.
It can be seen that the reciprocating movement of the piston rod 74 oscillates the shaft 66, which swings the parts 56 around the rivets 60. The part 58 being hinged to the main frame by the rods 64, the tilting of the parts 56 of the frame produces the translation of the foot section 54 along the axis of pivots 88 forming a hinge, thus maintaining the end part of the foot section 54 in a position close to the horizontal during its entire movement. This provides a comfortable rest position for them. lower limbs of a person resting on the bed.
Frame pieces 56 and 58 carry spacers 90, 92 which engage the top surface of the main frame pieces when the leg section is in the down position. Trough-shaped transverse reinforcing pieces 94, 96 connect the pieces 56 and the branches of the trough.
U 58. Similar reinforcing pieces, 98 and 100, connect the pieces 18 of the frame of the middle section, and these cross members are also used to support the control group.
This group includes the reversible electric motor 48, a tank and a pump mounted end to end in a single group. The group is mounted on a plate 102 (fig. 5) by means of a console
104. Tray 102, carrying a cup-shaped housing 106, is attached to parts 98 and 100. A layer of soundproofing material 108 is disposed in the housing to reduce noise and vibration during operation of the control unit. .
The latter includes T-fittings 110 and
112, respectively arranged on the opposite sides of the group. Fitting 110 connects one side of the pump and reservoir to the top of cylinder 44 and the bottom of cylinder 76, through flexible lines 52 and 80. Fitting 112 connects the opposite side of the pump and reservoir to the bottom of the cylinder. cylinder 44 and at the top of cylinder 76 respectively, through flexible lines 50 and 78.
Each of cylinders 44 and 76 includes a solenoid actuated valve which allows the piston to be locked in any chosen position. The cylinder 44 is shown in section in FIG. 9. It is similar to cylinder 76. It can be seen that the cylinder comprises a cylindrical body closed at each end by end pieces 114, 116.
Fluid from the control unit flows into and out of the cylinder through chambers 118 and 120 and thereby moves piston 122 in the direction of flow of the pressurized fluid.
The solenoid actuated valve opens by energization of the solenoid to allow pressurized fluid to enter or exit the cylinder.
As can be seen in fig. 9, the bottom part of the cylinder has a stopper 124 which engages the piston 122 at the end of its stroke. Workpiece 124 is held away from the end of the cylinder by a sleeve 126 which surrounds coil 128. Stopper 124 carries a valve seat 130 having a passage 132 which is normally closed by the tapered end of the cylinder. a plunger 134 which has a cylindrical passage 136 containing a compression coil spring 138. The latter rests against an end plug 140 and pushes the plunger against the seat 130.
The energization of the solenoid 128, as will be described, brings the plunger 134 into contact with the end plug 140 against the action of the spring 138 and uncovers the passage 132. The fluid can then flow into one or more. the other direction in this passage 132, lights 142, the passage 136 and the passage pierced in the plug 140. When the solenoid 128 is not energized, the valve is closed under normal conditions and the fluid can neither enter. into the end of the cylinder or come out. This prevents the sliding of the piston 122 which would occur if the cylinder were not closed by the action of the valve.
The valve which has just been described fulfills another very important function in determining the inclination of the head section. Spring 138 is chosen to have sufficient force to withstand displacement of piston 122 for ordinary pressure loads. The fluid circuit, which is a closed circuit, is subjected to certain pressure variations due to a change in temperature, and the spring 138 is chosen so that the plunger 134 of the valve is forced out of its seat in the event that the pressure of the fluid trapped between the piston and the valve would exceed a determined maximum value, much lower than the burst pressure of the cylinder, pipes, fittings, etc.
This prevents any damage to the control device even if a change in temperature causes an abnormal rise in the pressure of the fluid.
Fig. 8 shows the electrical diagram of the control, and fig. 6 and 7 show the details of a control box 142.
A plug 144 leads through a wire 158 the electric current to a terminal block 146 to which are also connected, one side of the cylinder solenoid 44 by a wire 160, one side of the cylinder solenoid 76 by a wire 162, and one side of the armature of the series 48 motor with a wire 164.
A wire from plug 144 is connected to block 146 by wire 166, then to a switch contact 170 by wire 168 and to a switch contact 174 by wire 172.
The armature of the motor 48 is connected to field windings 176, 178, each of which is energized for one direction of rotation. Winding 176 is connected by wire 180, to box 146 and by wire 182 to switch contacts 184 and 186.
Winding 178 is connected by wire 188, to box 146 and by wire 190 to switch contacts 192 and 194.
Switch contacts 196 and 198 are connected in parallel by wire 200 which goes to box 146 and continues with wire 202 which is connected to the solenoid of cylinder 76. Contacts 204 and 206 are connected in parallel by wire. 208 and, through box 146 and wire 210, to cylinder 44 solenoid.
The control box contains four movable arms 212, 214, 216 and 218, actuated respectively by pushbuttons 150, 152, 154 and 156. The arm 216 is connected by a wire 220 to a contact 226, the arm 212 is connected. by a wire 222 to the arm 218, and the arm 214 is likewise connected to a contact 228. The mechanical construction of the switches is not of particular importance, so its detailed description can be omitted, except to say that the arms movable switches are normally retained by the spring pressure in the off or inactive position, and the depression of any or all of the pushbuttons causes movement of the corresponding arms in the or active position.
In fig. 8, the arms shown in solid lines are in the out position and those in dotted lines in the in position.
The operation is as follows:
Suppose the bed frame is in the low position, shown in solid lines in Figs. 1 and 2.
The pistons of cylinders 44 and 76 are then in the withdrawn position, the solenoids and the motor 48 being at rest. It is obvious that the bed frame shown is normally equipped with a mattress, sheets or padding.
Suppose we want to raise the head of the bed.
Push button 154 is pressed, which brings switch arm 216 away from contact 174 and into engagement with contacts 192 and 204. Lead cylinder solenoid 44 is energized by wires 158, 160, 210, 208, contact 204, arm 216, wire 220, contact 226, arm 212, wire 222, arm 218, contact 228, wire 224, arm 214, contact 170 and wires 168 and 166. Simultaneously, the field winding 178 is energized by the wires 158 and 164, the motor armature, the wires 188 and 190, the contact 192, the arm 216, the wire 220, the contact 226, the arm 212, wire 222, arm 218, contact 228, wire 224, arm 214, contact 170, and wires 168 and 166.
With the solenoid valve having been opened and the engine energized in the desired direction, the piston rod 42 of the cylinder 44 moves out of the cylinder and rotates the shaft 32 by the lever 40; so that the head section 20 pivots around the rivets 26 under the action of the displacement of the links 36 and 38. The upward movement of the head section continues, up to the limit of the stroke of the shank. piston 52, as long as button 154 is pressed. Releasing this push button breaks the circuit through switch contacts 192 and 204, and motor 48 is put to rest along with cylinder 44 solenoid, so the head section stops and is turned off. locked in the position reached by closing the cylinder valves controlled by the solenoids.
To lower the head section, the button 156 is pressed, which brings the switch arm 218 away from the contact 228 and into engagement with the contacts 184 and 206. The solenoid of the cylinder 44 is thus energized by the wires 158, 160, 210, 208, contact 206, arm 218, wire 222, arm 212, contact 226, wire 220, arm 216, contact 174, wires 172, 168 and 166; motor 48 is energized by wires 158, 164, armature, field winding 176, wires 180, 182, contact 184, arm 218, contact 228, wire 224, arm 214, contact 170 and sons 168 and 166.
The motor 48 rotates in the opposite direction to its rotation in, the preceding operation and the head section rocks downward about its pivot axes until the push button is released or until it reaches its horizontal limit position. Limit switches or other means of shutting off current to the motor when the moving bed section reaches either of its extreme positions have been found to be unnecessary, because stalling the motor under such conditions does not is not dangerous.
Actuation of button 150 produces elevation of foot section 54 by operation of piston rod 74, shaft 66, and links 70, 72, 82 and 64. Likewise, actuation of the piston rod. button 152 lowers the foot section. The electrical circuit passing through the motor 48 and the solenoid of the cylinder 76 can be easily traced by referring to FIG. 8, in a manner similar to that described above.
Note that it is possible to raise or lower both sections simultaneously, but that it is not possible to raise one and lower the other at the same time. For example, simultaneous actuation of buttons 150 and 154 produces elevation of the foot and head section, on the other hand, if buttons 150 and 156 were simultaneously pressed to simultaneously produce the lift of the foot section and the head section. lowering the head section, no movement of the sections would occur as the circuit would be rendered inoperative. We see in fig. 8 that this is due to the fact that the excitation circuits of the motor and of the solenoid, in one direction of operation, comprise a contact in the position outside one of the switches controlling the operation in the opposite direction.
Thus, the simultaneous pressure of the up and down pushbuttons makes the circuit inoperative. This characteristic is important because the simultaneous excitation of the two field windings 176, 178 of the series motor could lead to the destruction of the motor.
