Description

Method for electric arc welding and electrodes for this purpose The present invention relates to a method for electric arc welding of ferrous materials and electrodes for this purpose.

For years, electrodes that have a wire coated with a coating of a so-called flux in the core have been used, with a large number of different trains being used to produce a number of electrodes, each of which is used for welding certain materials is particularly suitable for special conditions. These conditions refer not only to the electrical current, but also to the location of the weld seam. It was found that electrodes with a coating containing a high proportion of basic materials, such as. B.

Calcium fluoride contains, even with high current density, a welding material with good mechanical properties. It was found, however, that such electrodes with high current densities are only suitable for welding in a practically flat position. In addition, when thick or heavy precipitations are generated once or more by means of such electrodes under normal conditions, a porous point can arise in the precipitated weld metal. On the other hand, it was found that electrodes with a high proportion of rutile materials for welding in a non-flat position, e.g. B. with horizontally vertical welding carbon, are more suitable.

It was found, however, that if the current density was not significantly reduced, the mechanical properties of the weld metal deposited by such electrons were relatively poor.

The present invention relates to a method for electric arc welding of work pieces made of ferrous material using a welding electrode, which is supplied to the welding zone in connection with a gas stream which is supplied from an external source and at least 80 percent by volume consists of carbon dioxide , which is characterized in that the supplied welding electrode consists of an iron-containing core, which has a coating of a flux that has a low hydrogen content and contains deoxidizing and slag-forming agents.

The present invention also relates to welding electrodes suitable for the welding process according to the invention.

Known welding electrodes of the type with low hydrogen content usually store molten weld metal with a diffusible hydrogen content of less than 5 cm3 per 100 g of weld, and usually not more than 1 cm3 per 100 g of weld metal. The electrode coatings according to the invention preferably contain an even lower level of hydrogen in order to make it possible to deposit weld metal of this quality.

Basic materials are e.g. B. limestone, magnesium carbonate and other carbonates, calcium fluoride, other metal fluorides, which are useful as slag formers in welding, and mixtures of such metal fluorides, z. B. cryolite. Such materials are class 6 electrodes, listed in British Standard 1719 of 1951.

The flux coating can also contain titanium dioxide, preferably as rutile, or other minerals, such as. B. Ilmenite, which have a high proportion of titanium dioxide. Since zirconium silicate has a similar effect to titanium dioxide, it can partially replace titanium dioxide. The protective gas, which contains at least 80 percent by volume of carbon dioxide, can also be carbon monoxide, gaseous hydrocarbons, nitrogen or monatomic gases, such as. B. argon, and a small percentage of oxygen either individually or as a mixture.

Electrodes which contain the same or a much smaller amount of rutile material as the basic material in the coating can be used with advantage for the method according to the invention. If you use a protective gas consisting of at least 800 / o carbon dioxide in connection with such electrodes, you achieve a reduction in porosity, which is a tendency with such electrodes if you generate heavy precipitation in one or more processes.

The electrodes used in the process according to the invention preferably contain flux coatings with 15-60 parts by weight of basic materials and 40-0 parts by weight of rutile, advantageously in a weight ratio of less than 150 percent by weight of rutile, based on the basic material, and feldspar in an amount of 10 -30 parts by weight and ferro alloys in an amount of 15-20 parts by weight. The gas consisting of at least 80% carbon dioxide is used to shield the welding zone from the atmospheric air.

The invention also relates to a welding electrode provided with a coating which is intended to be used for welding according to the method according to the invention.

The coating mixtures can also be metal powder, such as. B. iron powder, and if desired contain a minor proportion of such materials that facilitate the discharge of the coating mixture. After the coating composition is attached to the wire located in the core, it is highly desirable to heat the coated electrode to a high enough temperature to keep the free water contained in the silicate or in other binders or in to drive out the minerals which are contained in the coating mixture. The elimination of this water significantly reduces the hydrogen content of the weld metal produced.

In order to facilitate the tight fit of the coating mixture on the electrode, the wire located in the core can be surrounded in one or more layers by a helically wound wire or wires, the wire or wires being in electrical contact with the wire in the core. The wire located in the core protrudes preferably over the surface of the protective coating at least over part of its length in order to form lines for the transmission of the electrical current to the wire located in the core.

The inventive method can be carried out with short welding electrodes, as they are normally used for welding by hand and in which the electrical connection to the wire located in the core is normally made at one end of the electrode. However, it is particularly useful for continuous spiral electrodes for automatic or semi-automatic welding. Of course, short welding electrodes of the type in accordance with the invention can be coupled to one another at the end to form a continuous electrode.

If the electrode is passed through a welding head, then in the case of continuous electrodes coated with flux it is necessary to feed the electrical current from one or more contact elements to the wire in the core. Contact with the wire in the core can, if desired, be carried out by one or more instruments with sharp edges which penetrate through the coating in the mass as the electrode is passed through the welding head. Preferably, however, the electrode is provided with one or more layers of coiled wire or wires which are in electrical contact with the core.

The winding wire or the outer winding wire, where there is more than one turn, makes contact with a contact piece or contact pieces via the coating made of flux, according to the passage of the electrode through the welding head. One form of construction of such an electrode is described in British Patent No. 584299. This is particularly useful. However, other constructions with one or more layers of wound wires consisting of one or more wires can also be used. A suitable construction of a welding electrode is illustrated in the accompanying drawing.

According to this drawing, there is a continuous welding electrode from a core located union wire 1, which is wrapped with a wire structure and is in electrical contact with it, the wire structure from an inner layer, which is formed by four parallel wires 2, 3, 4 and 5 is formed, which are helically wound around the wire located in the core clockwise, and from an outer layer, which is formed by four other parallel wires 6, 7, 8 and 9, which are helically wound around the inner layer counter-clockwise are, stand. The wires 6, 7, 8 and 9 protrude to the upper surface of the electrode and are in electrical contact with the wires 2, 3, 4 and 5.

The spaces between the wires of these two layers of wire mesh are filled with a coating material 10, the composition of which corresponds to one of the fol lowing examples. The coating mixture contains deoxidizing agents and fluxing agents and can be metal powder, such as B. iron powder.

The welding electrode is arranged in such a way that it is guided through a nozzle 22 against a workpiece 11 by means of conventional means, not shown. Furthermore, the usual but not shown contact means are in contact with the outer wires 6, 7, 8 and 9 for the purpose of supplying the welding electrode with electrical current by transmitting the current to the contact 1 directly above the nozzle 22 through the wire mesh.

When working according to the invention, an arc is generated between the welding electrode and the workpiece 11 and the welding electrode is continuously conveyed through a nozzle 22 against the workpiece 11, with a welding metal layer 14 of the desired composition being deposited. Around the electrode, carbon dioxide is fed through the nozzle 22 against the workpiece 11, which flows around the welding electrode and protects the welding arc, as shown by arrows. The shielding gas also protects the welding zone from the surrounding air, which is in the vicinity of the arc. The slag-forming materials contained in the coating form a protective layer 15 on the upper part of the welded metal 14 deposited, protecting the latter from contact with air during cooling.

If the coating mixtures used in the following examples are used in conjunction with carbon dioxide protective gas, very constant welding conditions are achieved in addition to a smooth weld seam. In addition, a slag deposit 15 is formed by the Ver drive, which is easy to remove.

Of course, the construction of the electrodes in the practice of the present invention can be of any type. The coiled wires 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 can be omitted from the electrode shown in the drawing, so that the electrode consists of a core wire 1 with a coating 10.

For purposes of illustration, a number of welding electrodes and coating compositions in accordance with the present invention are described below. In any event, the electrode should be heated to a temperature high enough to substantially dewater the coating if a weld metal with the best mechanical properties is to be formed.

The weld metal deposited by these electrodes preferably contains no more than 1 cm3 of hydrogen per 100 g of weld metal and definitely no more than 5 cm3 per 100 g. Example 1 An electrode for the automatic welding of flux iron has a wire core made of flux iron which is surrounded by a wire mesh which is formed by two wire layers, the wires of which are bound around the wire core in the opposite direction to one another are.
