Method of controlling the continuous deposition of a material on a moving surface
and apparatus for carrying out the method
The present invention relates to a method for adjusting the continuous deposition of a material on a moving surface, characterized in that a fluid is maintained on the rear face of a free strip of a sheet of extruded material. different pressure from that prevailing on its front face and that this different pressure is applied to this face by bringing the fluid there through several adjacent independent channels opening towards said rear face of said sheet of material.

The invention comprises an apparatus for carrying out the method, characterized in that it comprises a chamber adjacent to the moving surface on one side of the web of material and carrying an orifice facing this face of the web. and in this chamber, separation means forming the various independent channels serving to equalize the pressure over the entire width of the orifice of the chamber.

Fig. 1 is a schematic view of the apparatus, partly in section, to clearly show the arrangement.

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical section, on a larger scale, transverse to the casting cylinder.

Fig. 3 is a plant view partly in section, taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 1, a cutout showing the interior construction of the chamber.

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view of a drawer device associated with the chamber.

Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 4.

The apparatus comprises, in a known manner, a metal casting cylinder 2, the casting surface 3 of which is perfectly polished. This cylinder is usually cooled by means not shown and is driven in uniform rotation in the direction indicated by the arrow in FIG. 2, by a device not shown. An extrusion die 4 is placed above the cylinder and the material to be extruded, such as polyethylene, is introduced into the die by a conveyor device such as a conveyor screw (not shown), through a passage 6 which extends across the width of the die. The passage 6 communicates with a nozzle 7 through which an uninterrupted web of material is continuously ejected onto the moving casting surface 3.

As is commonly done in the extrusion of a plastic material such as polyethylene, the extrusion die 4 is provided with a heater (not shown) for maintaining the material in the molten state. When the material is ejected from the extrusion orifice 7, it solidifies very quickly on the casting surface 3 into a continuous film, which can do without a support, which is continuously detached from the surface by a device not shown and finally rolled up. The continuously moving casting surface 3 slows down the extruded web, and the chamber 9 which maintains the vacuum serves to obtain a uniform deposition of the material on the surface 3 as well as to eliminate gases or vapors which could affect the quality. of the film.

The width of the chamber 9 (fig. 3) is less than the width of the casting cylinder and equal to the width of the extrusion die so that a vacuum maintained in the chamber acts over the entire width of the rear face. 11 of the web 8, while its front face 12 is subjected to atmospheric pressure. The chamber 9 can have any section which fits suitably on the casting cylinder 2 and very close to the latter and comprises upper and lower walls 13, an end wall 14 closing one end of the chamber, a rear wall 15, a partial end wall 16 at the opposite end, closing this end, except for a connector 17 of a pipe 18 connected to a suction source such as a fan 19.

At its front end facing the film 8, the chamber 9 tapers to form a relatively narrow nozzle 21 which terminates in a slit-shaped orifice 22 which takes the entire width of the chamber. A nozzle orifice of about 6.35mu in height is fine, although this size is not critical.

To help maintain the vacuum on the rear face 11 of the web, a sealing pad 23 is placed near the orifice 22 of the nozzle in the gap between the underside of the chamber 9 of the cylinder 2, by sight of sealing this gap. A soft material, such as felt, is used for this purpose and extends in the width direction of the chamber 9 over the entire length of the orifice 22. The pad is in contact with the cylinder and the chamber in contact with it. also serves as a scraper element which keeps the casting surface clean 3.

To allow the pressure to be equalized over the entire width of the orifice 22 of the chamber, separators are placed in this chamber to form several separate adjacent fluid channels 24, communicating with the orifice 22 and with the pipe 17. from the room. The separation members include at least one partition. Each partition is attached to the upper and lower walls 13 of the chamber and comprises a front part 26 normal to the orifice 22 and a rear part 27 which extends parallel to the orifice and which terminates in the pipe 17.

Although three independent channels 24 are shown, it is clear that there may be more. Although two of these channels help to balance the pressure, three or more channels are desirable. The front portions of the partitions are preferably equally spaced from each other to give the channels 24 equal widths near the extrusion port 22, although this feature is not critical.

A device cooperating with the channels 24 regulates the prevailing pressure. This adjustment is made by observing the deposit line on the casting surface 2 of the extruded film and adjusting the pressure in the respective channels to make the deposit line as straight as possible. As shown in fig. 5, the part of each channel 24 located in the pipe 17 is provided with an opening 28, the size of which is adjustable by a drawer 29, mounted in slides 31.

The vacuum created by the fan 19 sucking water from the pipe 18 is provided with an adjustment opening 32, the effective dimension of which can be adjusted by hand by a sleeve 33 sliding on the pipe 18.
