Le porte-électrode étanche, équipant ledit four, comprend un dispositif, étanche aux gaz, d'amenée de courant électrique à l'électrode, dans lequel une matière divisée, conductrice de l'électricité et résis tant à la chaleur, plus particulièrement à base de carbone, est maintenue en contact étroit avec ladite électrode, par compression au moyen d'un presse- étoupe ;
Method and apparatus for the production of oxide in the state of dispersed dust The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for the production of oxides in the state of dispersed dust. It can be applied to the preparation of all kinds of bodies in the state of very great fineness and it is of particular interest in the case where the preparation of dispersed silica is envisaged.
It is known that dispersed products can be obtained by vaporization, in an arc furnace, of oxidized minerals partially reduced by carbon, the gas thus obtained then being treated in a second chamber where it is burned and cooled to give rise to a oxide dust.
The present process, and the apparatus relating thereto, relate in particular to the first phase of the operation, that is to say to the production in a sealed arc furnace of sub-oxides of metals or of loose metal under form of vapor. The invention makes it possible to obtain products of better quality than in the past, at the same time as a safer and more regular operation of the production plant.
One of the objects of the invention is a process for manufacturing an oxide of a metal or a metalloid, in particular silicon, aluminum, lead and zinc, in the form of dispersed dust, by reducing partial tion by carbon and vaporization in an arc furnace of one of said oxides, characterized in that a powder mixture consisting of said oxide and carbon is heated to a temperature between 2000 and 26000 C, in the presence of a bath based on the metal or metalloid of said oxide, the volume of said bath being 5 to 20 times greater than that of said mixture.
Another object is an apparatus for carrying out the method, characterized in that it comprises a sealed arc furnace, the cooled hemispherical vault of which is coated entirely in carbon, sealed electrode holders with variable inclination, cooled feeds of inert gas under pressure at the base of the electrode holders for cleaning conductive deposits by intermittent or continuous gas blowing, and such gas feeds at the base of the raw material supply tubes.
The furnace can be loaded continuously with a mixture of sand and coke so that the surface layer thus formed is permanently 5 to 20 times smaller in volume than the volume of the metal bath, and preferably of the order of 8 to 12 times lower.
The intensity of the vaporization can be deduced from the quantity of heat released by the oxidation of the dispersed dust by measuring, with a thermoelectric couple, the temperature of the hot gases at the top of the hood above the oven, the direct measurement of the temperature of the bath being impractical.
It has been observed that the greatest vaporization is obtained when the surface layer of small thickness, of the order of approximately 2 to 5 cm, consists of fused silica, of the sand-coke mixture and that it also exhibits , on the surface, a few pieces of metal or droplets.
The process therefore makes it possible, with a view to optimum production, to adjust the composition of the bath by adjusting the supply as a function of the temperature of the gases and of the appearance of the surface of the bath.
Thus, if the temperature of the gases drops at the same time as the metal magnifying glasses disappear under an excessively thick layer of silica, the percentage of coke is increased. If, on the contrary, it is the surface layer of fused silica that disappears, the percentage of sand is increased.
Other variables also make it possible to detect a change in the composition of the bath, for example the increase in the intensity passing through each electrode (as a result of the variation in conductivity of the bath), the change in the appearance of the flame , the change in the sound of the arc.
The regular operation of an installation in which the new process is applied is further improved when special arrangements are made for the constant power operation of the sealed oven.
Thus, according to a particular form of implementation of the method, means are provided not only to keep substantially constant, and of the order of 2 to 5 cm, the distance between the electrodes and the bath, but again to keep substantially constant, and of the order of 15 to 30 cm, the distances between electrode tips.
Means can also be provided for suppressing the arcing between the electrode and the roof of the sealed furnace, initiations which tend to occur by accumulation of crusts or of deposits of conductive materials inside the ducts provided. in the thickness of the vault for the passage of the electrodes.
As a means for preventing the formation of harmful deposits, continuous or intermittent cleaning, by means of an inert gas under pressure, of the elective zones of formation of said deposits is advantageously used.
Means for cleaning by blowing inert gas can be provided in areas of the installation other than the electrodes, for example the sand-coke mixture feed tubes, where troublesome deposits appear.
An embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing. Fig. 1 shows in section an electric oven and the hood where the gases are burnt, FIG. 2 is a section showing the detail of the assembly of the vote on the oven vessel; fig. 3 shows, in half-section, a device for supplying current to the electrode, and FIG. 4 shows, in half-section, an embodiment of a sealed electrode holder with variable inclination.
It is seen in fig. 1 that the first enclosure where the reaction takes place is a sealed closed furnace consisting of a tank 1 and a vault 2 made of sheet steel lined with refractory 3. The crucible 4 is made of amorphous carbon or graphite, the vault 2 is entirely brazed in carbon 5 in a substantially spherical shape, the center of said sphere being in the vicinity of the plane 6 of the mean level of the bath 7.
The arch sheet is cooled by water circulation chambers, this arrangement reducing the wear of the coating because the carbon hardly reacts when it is thus cooled. As the gases from the oven are sucked in by the fan (not shown) of the dust collection device, the oven enclosure is under negative pressure and means are provided to make the oven airtight.
Thus, in the embodiment shown in FIG. 1 and in more detail in FIG. 2, a ring 8 supporting a round iron ring 9 which crushes a foam rubber seal 10 housed in a gutter 11 integral with the tank 1 has been reported in a sealed manner, on the periphery of the vault 1. Circulation chambers 12-13 and 14 are provided on the tank and on the roof to cool the seal 9-10 which is protected, moreover, by a refractory material 15 stuffed in the clearance between the tank and the roof.
The electrode holders 16 mounted on the oven are of the sealed type; they are fixed to the conical part of the vault 2 and isolated from the latter by a double insulation.
The distance between the electrode tips in the bath and the electrode tips between them is adjusted by longitudinal displacement of the electrodes and by pivoting of the electrode holders 16 on their sectoral supports 17. The inclination of the electrode is, preferably between 40 and 600 approximately.
The electrodes pass through the carbon arch 5 through conical sheaths 18 of taper such that the greatest radial distance between the surface of the electrode and the inner wall of the sheath is at least equal to the distance between the tips of electrodes.
Deposits of conductive material, which risk producing arcing between the electrode and the arch, tend especially to occur on the cooled parts, that is to say at the base of the electrode holder. In accordance with the invention, at 19, a hollow ring is provided which is concentric with the electrode comprising 2 concentric compartments, one in which cooling water circulates, the second, located towards the electrode, receiving a inert or reducing gas under pressure which, through radial holes, sweeps the periphery of the electrode. By way of example, we can cite that an efficient cleaning of electrodes of 300 mm in diameter, mounted on a 2500 kW furnace, by sending nitrogen under a pressure of 4 kg / cm 3 for 20 seconds every half hour.
The sand-coke mixture is fed to the furnace continuously by tubes 20 of welded refractory steel, cooled by circulating water and placed between the electrodes. A cleaning system by intermittent or continuous blowing of nitrogen at the inlet of said tubes prevents the formation of crusts or deposits which could prevent the furnace from being supplied. Advantageously, a device comprising a hollow crown identical to that used for cleaning the base of the electrode holders is chosen.
The inclination of the feed tubes is chosen from. such that, in a three-phase furnace, the point of impact of the mixture introduced into the furnace is located approximately in the middle of the sides of the equilateral triangle formed by the 3 tips of the electrodes.
An electromagnetic stirring of the bath is obtained, improving the homogeneity of the latter, by a judicious arrangement of the conductors bringing the three-phase current to the electrodes.
In the case of the preparation of dispersed silica, which has been mentioned more particularly in the foregoing, the metallic part of the bath becomes loaded with impurities, in particular iron, coming from the raw materials. After a certain running time, the bath which has become too rich in iron must be renewed, in part or in whole, for example by casting the part of the bath rich in ferro-silicon, or by removing said bath during shutdown of the oven.
The sealed electrode holder, equipping said oven, comprises a device, gas-tight, for supplying electric current to the electrode, in which a divided material, electrically conductive and resistant to heat, more particularly to carbon base, is maintained in close contact with said electrode, by compression by means of a gland;
this electrode holder is characterized in that it comprises in combination, a system of jacks, integral with both the roof of the furnace and this current supply device, as well as a system for clamping the electrode, comprising on the one hand clamping means integral with the current supply device, and on the other hand clamping means independent of this device, so that said system of jacks makes it possible to perform either the longitudinal displacement of the electrode made integral with the current supply device and fixed relative to the latter, ie the longitudinal displacement of this current supply device relative to the electrode kept fixed in space.
This electrode holder further comprises, also in combination, a device for tilting said electrode, consisting of a cylindrical bearing surface integral with said system of jacks, and resting on a corresponding surface of a solid base of the vault of the oven and fixed relative to it.
In a preferred form, the electrode holder is provided with a tubular metal part or sleeve, concentric with the electrode, of an internal diameter greater than the diameter of the electrode and the annular space between these two is filled. parts by means of a divided material, means being provided to keep said material compressed.
Contact is made uniformly over the entire periphery of the electrode, which prevents the appearance of hot spots or burns.
Depending on the intensity at which the electrode must work, the sleeve of greater or lesser height is chosen and the current density is kept within the usual limits by the increase in the contact surface between the conductive pulverulent material and the 'electrode. As the divided conductive material, powdered and / or flake graphite is advantageously used. Good results are obtained by using a mixture of these two products, better conductivity has been achieved by taking a mixture of substantially equal parts of powder and of flakes.
It is also possible to use, in whole or in part, for the conductive seal, carbides of refractory metals such as, without this enumeration being limiting: carbides of tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, titanium, zirconium, etc.
In a preferred embodiment, the sleeve is provided, at its lower part, with one or more sealing rings preventing the loss of graphite, a loss which may occur by entrainment during the movements of the electrode relative to the muff.
Means are provided for pressing, at least when the electrodes are under current, the graphite, both against the electrode and against the current supply sleeve. Thus, in an embodiment which has given good results, the upper part of the sleeve comprises a screw gland which compresses the graphite in the annular space reserved for it.
Even better contact is ensured by giving the inner surface of the sleeve a slightly frustoconical profile with the small base facing the tip of the electrode. A wedge effect then occurs, facilitating the compaction of the graphite.
The new device has the advantage of realizing; not only an excellent electrical seal, but also a gas-tight seal between the electrode and the part where the current is supplied, said seal however allowing relative movements between the electrode and the part where the current is brought.
The new electrode holder is therefore particularly advantageous when used for equipping electric furnaces in which the laboratory atmosphere must be different, in pressure and / or in composition, from the atmosphere. exterior.
In a preferred form, second electrode clamping means are provided, said second means having only a mechanical blocking function and being integral with the current supply sleeve.
Means for longitudinal translation of the electrode are also provided, as is usual, to ensure regulation, said means acting, preferably, on the sleeve or on the aforesaid second clamping means of the electrode. electrode.
A sealed electrode holder is produced by providing, in addition, between the parts of the electrode holder in relative longitudinal displacement, tight, sliding gaskets made of a material resistant to heat.
The present invention finds a particularly advantageous application in the case where it is sought to produce a sealed electrode holder with variable inclination, an arrangement making it possible to maintain the optimum spacing between the electrodes of the same oven, despite the variations in the temperature. height of the bath contained therein. The part fixed in the space of the electrode holder comprises a rectal base fixed, for example, to the vault of the oven, and on which is mounted a part, or electrode guide, having a surface complementary to that of the rectal base.
We see in fig. 3 the sleeve 21 of the electrode holder, the interior surface 22 of which is slightly frustoconical. The electric current is brought to said sleeve, for example by means of a terminal 23 connected to the cables 24. The sleeve 21 is, on the other hand, supported, by any suitable means, at a fixed part of the installation, such as that: bracket, oven roof, etc., not shown in the figure, with the interposition of any appropriate means of longitudinal translation: jack, hoist, etc., allowing the height adjustments of the electrode to be made.
The electrode 25 is clamped in a blocking flange 26, integral with the sleeve 21, or a part itself integral with said sleeve.
The gap 27 between the electrode and the internal face 22 of the sleeve 21 is lined with a mixture of flakes and graphite powder held down by one or more graphite rings 28, and compacted by means of a press - tow 29.
When the electrode holder is intended for a large diameter electrode, additional guide rings are advantageously provided for the electrode, so as not to force the electrode on the graphite ring 28.
The purpose of said ring 28 is to retain the powder-graphite flake mixture, while allowing the electrode to slide, so that its diameter must be calibrated with precision. In the case where the tolerances on the diameter of the electrode are important, it may be advantageous to superimpose several split rings, made of graphite, taking care that the slots are in opposition.
During the operation of the furnace, a certain quantity of graphite powder may be entrained, in particular during the sliding operations of the electrode or when passing the connection nipples, this is why a certain amount of clearance is provided. cable gland 29 which can be periodically tightened if necessary.
Provision can be made, in particular for electrodes of small diameter, to perform the mechanical clamping of the electrode in the electrode holder, only by means of the conductive seal made of graphite flakes, which eliminates the clamping flange. It may be advantageous to provide the cable gland with a remote control system, for example with a jack, making it possible to quickly release the clamping pressure of the flake seal, to facilitate the sliding of the electrode.
There is shown in FIG. 4, an embodiment, in which advantage is taken of the sealing produced between the current supply sleeve 21 and the electrode 25 thanks to the presence of the conductive seal made of graphite flakes. Fig. 4 shows a sealed and orientable electrode holder, allowing very precise adjustment of the arc in controlled atmosphere furnaces.
In this embodiment, the electrical contact between the sleeve 21, cooled by circulating water in the tubes 30, and the electrode 25, is ensured, as described above, by means of powder and flakes of graphite packed in the 'interval 27 by means of the gland 29, while the mechanical clamping of the electrode on the electrode holder is completed by a locking ring 26 integral with the sleeve 21.
The sleeve 21 is extended by a tubular skirt 3, also cooled, comprising at its lower part a seal 32 clamped in a stuffing box. Said seal is capable of sliding on the outer surface of a tubular electrode guide 33 fixed in translation, cooled by the circulation of water, and comprising, optionally, a ring 34, or a portion of a ring, to guide or support the electrode if it is not vertical.
The height adjustment of the electrode is carried out by means of any conventional regulating device, such as, as is shown by way of example in FIG. 4, one or more jacks 35, the cylinders of which bear on a part fixed in translation of the electrode holder, such as the tubular guide 33, and the pistons 36 of which act on the sleeve 21 or on a part integral with the latter.
To allow sliding, as the electrode is consumed, advantageously is provided at the upper part of the electrode holder a guide ring 37 made integral with the fixed part of the electrode holder (part 33) by the 'intermediate flanges not shown in FIG. 4.
The pistons 36 of the jacks 35 being at the end of their travel in the low position, a collar 39 is tightened on the electrode, which then bears on the fixed ring 37. The collar 26 is loosened and the electrode held by the collar 39, remains motionless while the jacks are operated to raise the current supply assembly.
The ring 26 is then tightened, and the collar 39 loosened, to again allow the operation of the electrode by means of the jacks 35.
The inclination of the electrode holder is made variable by providing, for the tubular electrode guide 33, a cylindrical lower bearing surface 40 coming to rest on a corresponding surface of a cooled base 42-42 'comprising an insulating seal 43 and fixed, for example, to the vault 44 of the oven.
Of course, suitable clamping means of the cylindrical surfaces 40 and 42 against each other prevent any accidental change of inclination of the electrode holder and flexible seals such as 45-45 'ensure the integrity of the electrode holder. 'tightness to the pivoting device.
