   Fig. 1 stellt schematisch einen Messapparat mit einem Servonachlaufmechanismus dar, der eine ziffernmässige Anzeige von einem Drehspuleninstrument herleitet, dessen Drehspule durch den Entladungsstrom aus  einem kapazitiven Gebilde mit der zu messenden Kapazität abgelenkt wird;

Fig. 8 ist ein Schaltschema einer gegenüber Fig. 3 abgeänderten Ausbildung des   Messapparates;

  Method and apparatus for measuring the capacitance of an electrical capacitive structure
The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for measuring the capacitance of an electrical capacitive structure and is particularly intended to measure high capacitance values, e.g. B. thousands of microfarads. A special, but exclusive form of application of the invention relates to determining the number of subscribers who are actively connected to a radio or television program distribution network at a certain point in time.

   Measuring a high value electrical capacitance by the usual bridge method is inconvenient because of the low reactance of the capacitance even at a low AC frequency. The method according to the present invention is characterized in that first the capacitive structure is electrically charged up to a known voltage and then discharged by an integrating measuring device which contains a member that is movable by the discharge current and comes to rest in one position after the discharge process has been completed , which represents the current / time integral of the discharge current flow.

   The inventive apparatus for performing the method is characterized by a torque-free moving coil measuring instrument, a source of constant and known potential, a circuit device for connecting the electrical structure in parallel with the capacitance to be measured first with the potential source and then with the moving coil of the measuring instrument, and means for determining the Angle between the original and the deflected position of the moving coil of the mentioned instrument before or after the discharge of the capacitive structure by the moving coil.

   If a constant current flows through the coil of a moving coil instrument, and the coil receives the current via strands or similar means that do not exert any torque on the coil, the coil moves evenly through an arcuate magnetic field at a speed proportional to the current.

  Accordingly, when such a coil receives a discharge current from the electrical structure with the capacitance to be measured, the result is that the coil is deflected by a distance that is proportional to the time integral of the current, regardless of the time course of the amplitude of the current itself.

   Since the coil remains motionless after the current impulse has ceased, its new position in comparison to the initial position is a measure of the charge value.

  This charge value can be read off by attaching a suitable scale. If the charging voltage is exactly known and constant, the scale can be converted directly into I capacitance values, e.g. B. microfarads are calibrated.

   In general, it is not expedient to use such a device and a numeric display device to directly display a numeric display, since the moving coil instrument is relatively sensitive. In the following, however, it is shown how a direct numerical display is possible without requiring a power output from the moving coil instrument.

   In order to make the invention easier to understand, various embodiments of the invention are explained in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings, merely by way of example.

   1 shows schematically a measuring apparatus with a servo tracking mechanism, which derives a numerical display from a moving coil instrument, the moving coil of which is deflected by the discharge current from a capacitive structure with the capacity to be measured;
Figure 2 is a similar schematic representation of another apparatus in which the reading is electro-optically;
3 shows the electrical circuit diagram of a measuring apparatus which is used in particular for use in a radio or television program distribution system for subscribers to determine their number;
FIG. 4 shows a series of time / amplitude diagrams which illustrate the functioning of the apparatus according to FIG. 3;

Fig. 5 is a schematic representation of an arrangement for ensuring the alignment of the rotating coil of the measuring device to a predetermined reference position, e.g. B. to zero;
6 shows an electrical circuit diagram to explain the basic method according to the present invention for measuring the capacitance;
7 is a circuit diagram for explaining the preferred embodiment of the method for measuring capacitance with the possibility of a numerical reading of the measurement result;
FIG. 8 is a circuit diagram of a configuration of the measuring apparatus modified from FIG. 3;
Fig. 9 shows a variant of Fig. 5 of an arrangement for aligning the rotary coil to a predetermined reference position.

   From Fig. 6 it can be seen that the basic method according to the present invention for capacitance measurement consists in first connecting the capacitive structure with the capacitance Cx to be measured in parallel with a current source S and then, after it has been fully charged, disconnected from the current source and via an integrating measuring device IM is discharged. The latter is preferably a moving coil instrument 11 with a moving coil 10 moving in a homogeneous magnetic flux between the opposite N and S poles. As has already been explained, the moving coil should be free from any external torque influence so that its final deflection position after the complete discharge of Cx represents the capacitance value.

   If the voltage of the current source S is constant and known, and if the rotating coil is brought into a predetermined reference position before the start of the discharge, an appropriately calibrated scale can be used in conjunction with a pointer attached to the rotating coil, so that the immediate reading of the to enable measured capacitance value.

   The alternating charging and discharging of the structure Cx can be controlled by a switching device A, while, if desired, series resistors F and G can be provided in order to limit the maximum values of the charging and discharging currents.

   An arrangement for the numerical reading is shown in FIG. 1 and requires the use of a servo tracking mechanism which can be controlled by the deflecting movement of the rotating coil 10 in the instrument. In this arrangement, the rotating coil 10 of the integrator 11 is provided with a radially attached pointer arm 12, the free end of which carries a small flag or mask 13, which is used to shield the light of a light source 14, which can be a small electric lamp, from a photoelectric wall ler 15, which can consist of a photocell or a phototransistor, is used. The light source 14 and the photoelectric converter 15 are themselves on one arm
16 mounted, which is carried by a shaft 17 which is rotatable about an axis coaxial with the rotating coil 10.

  The shaft 17 can be driven via a suitable reduction gear 18 by an auxiliary motor 19 which is fed by a servo amplifier 20, the input of which is connected to the output of the photoelectric converter 15.

   The arrangement is such that when the rotating coil 10 and the pointer arm 12 rotate, whereby the mask 13 is moved from its normal light-shielding position between the light source 14 and the photoelectric converter 15, the change in the output of the converter 15 excites the servo motor 19, which moves the arm 16 until the light beam between the light source and the photoelectric converter is interrupted by the mask 13 again. The axis 17 thus rotates through an angle which corresponds to the deflection angle of the rotating coil 10. A suitable dual coded disc 21 can be attached to the axle 17 or to some other part of the mechanism which rotates in proportional angular relationship with the axle. If necessary, a dual-coded output signal, which reflects the angular position of the pointer arm 12, in the usual way, such as.

   B. can be achieved by a further light source 22 on one side and by groups of photocells on the other side of the disc 21.

   A variant of this reading device is shown in FIG. 2, according to which a mirror 24 is attached to the rotating coil 10 and arranged in such a way that a narrow strip of light is thrown from a light source 25 through a narrow slot 26 in a mask onto a cylindrically curved scale 27 , which carries a dual-coded pattern 28 that is partly translucent and partly opaque. The width of the light strip that reaches the scale 27 is such that only one of the vertically coded areas is illuminated. Photocells or other similar devices that are influenced by the light beam that passes through the different parts of the illuminated scale are designed in such a way that they immediately give a numerical output signal that reflects the position of the coil 10.

   Similar to FIG. 2 is another arrangement in which the mirror 24 on the spinning reel reflects a light spot onto a fixed grating-like scale which has a number of mutually separate reflective or translucent zones. The light reflected or transmitted from each such zone is captured by a photocell or similar device to produce a series of electronic digit counters which can be used to operate electronic digit counters or other equivalent devices.

   A disadvantage of the arrangements described above is that the relationship between the angular movement of the rotating coil 10 and the entered current value is not always precisely linear because minor irregularities occur in the assumed constant magnetic flux density of the magnetic field through which the coil 10 rotates. This lack of linearity requires individual calibration or manufacture of the dual coded scales for each instrument if high accuracy is required.

   A preferred embodiment of the present invention aims to overcome these disadvantages by returning the rotating coil of the integrating device to its original position after being deflected by the discharge current, by a further current surge or by a series of current surges, the strength and duration of which are more easily measured or predetermined can be.

   Accordingly, if a constant electrical current of precisely known magnitude is used to drive the deflected moving coil to its original zero position, the measurement of the time required to return the coil to zero position can be used to measure the charge that originally deflected the pointer . A variant of this method consists in supplying the moving coil with a series of small, precisely known amounts of charge, which are always the same, in one direction in order to turn the moving coil back into its original reference or zero position; if the number of such quantities of charge is counted, it can express the sought result numerically.

   A convenient way of applying such a series of return charges is to charge a small capacitor repeatedly to a constant and known voltage and then to discharge it each time through the coil of the moving coil instrument until the moving coil is turned back to its zero position. Such a small capacitor can, however, as an alternative solution, be charged each time via the moving coil of the moving coil instrument and then discharged by short circuit. The same current impulses can also serve as drive impulses for an electronic counter whose end position when the moving coil of the moving coil instrument reaches the zero or reference position represents the load value and thus the desired measured capacitance value.

   Such an arrangement just mentioned has the advantage that if the capacitive structure with the capacitance to be measured is charged up to a given constant voltage V and the small capacitor is also charged to the same voltage, the real value of the voltage is of secondary importance. Under such circumstances, the sought result of the capacitance measurement is only equal to the capacitance value of the small capacitor, multiplied by the number of individual current impulses from the latter, which is necessary to bring the moving coil back to its zero position. Any in the moving coil instrument e.g.

   Non-linearities caused, for example, by inadequate homogeneity of the magnetic field are automatically compensated because they occur to the same extent, but in the opposite sense, both in the measurement and in the backward movement of the coil.

   Such an arrangement is shown in FIG. 7, in which the capacitive structure Cx with the capacitance to be measured is charged by a switching device A via a series resistor F from a current source S and then again via the same switching device A, a series resistor G and by the integrating device A. , a series resistor G and is discharged through the integrator IM with the moving coil 10. In order to bring about a numerical display of the charge and consequently the capacitance value, the switching device Ä is returned to the position shown in order to separate the structure Cx from the measuring device.

   A capacitor Cq of precisely known capacitance value, which is as many times as possible smaller than the estimated or anticipated capacitance value of Cx, can be connected by switches D1 and D3 either for charging in parallel with the source S or for discharging in parallel with the integrating device IM.

   The type of connection of the capacitor Cq is such that the discharge current emanating from it, which flows through the rotating coil 10, is directed opposite to the original discharge current from Cx.

  As a result, the moving coil 10 is gradually moved back into its original zero or reference position, the number of steps required for this specifying the ratio of the corresponding capacitance values of the known capacitance Cq to the unknown capacitance Cx. The number of steps can be registered by a mechanical counting device coupled to switches D1 and D2 or, if the switches are not mechanical, by means of an electronic counting circuit CC which is excited by each charging current through the capacitor Cq.

   A particular circuit for measuring capacitance in the manner described above is described below with reference to FIGS. 3 and 4. FIG. In FIG. 3, Cx represents the equivalent capacitor with the capacitance to be measured (e.g. that of a program distribution network), while Cq designates the smaller capacitor and 11 the integrating instrument. An npn transistor T1 controls the charging of the capacitance Cx by a constant voltage source B via changeover switch contacts R1 and R2, while a transistor T2 of the npn type controls the discharging of the same capacitance Cx by the integrating instrument 11.

   A third transistor T3 of the pnp type controls the functioning of transistor T1 by applying a switching voltage to terminal 1.A switching voltage is fed to transistor T2 via terminal 2, and the arrangement is such that with negative terminal 1 and positive terminal 2 the transistor T3 is conductive and makes the transistor T1 conductive, while the transistor T2 is switched off. If, on the contrary, terminal 1 is positive and terminal 2 is negative, transistors T3 and T1 are switched off and the like. the transistor T2 conductive.

   The contacts R1 and R2, as well as the contact R3, are part of a changeover relay, the coil of which is not shown, and which is used for control purposes, as will be described below.

   When the transistor T1 is switched on and the transistor T2 is switched off, the capacitor Cx is fully charged to -50 volts of the voltage source B via the transistor T1 and the relay contacts R1 and R2. At that point in time, the integrating instrument 11 is out of operation since the transistor T2 is switched off. When the capacitor Cx is fully charged, the control potentials of the terminals 1 and 2 are interchanged, whereby the transistor T1 is off and the transistor T2 is on. The capacitor Cx now discharges via the relay contact R2, the integrating instrument 11, the relay contact R3 and the transistor T2, whereby the moving coil of the instrument 11 is deflected and finally comes to rest in a position dependent on the charge value in the capacitor Cx.

   The relay now reverses the positions of contacts R1, R2 and R3, thereby switching off capacitor Cx and connecting the smaller capacitor Cq to the circuit. By reversing the control potentials 1 and 2, the transistor T1 is turned on again and the transistor 2 is switched off. The capacitor Cq is now charged to the voltage of the source B via the relay contact R1 and the integrating instrument 11 and the relay contact R2; the resulting current flow through the instrument 11 brings its moving coil 10 one step closer to the zero position. The control potentials of terminals 1 and 2 are reversed again, whereby the transistor T1 is switched off and the transistor T2 is made conductive, so that the now charged capacitor Cq is discharged via the relay contacts R3 and the transistor T2.

   After a few repetitions, the number of which depends on the deflected position of the moving coil 10 of the instrument 11, the coil has returned to its zero position. The number of charge current surges that the capacitor Cq receives in order to effect this is determined with the aid of a suitable counting device, such as a dual or other pulse counting system, and is a measure of the charge on the capacitor Cx.

  When the capacity of Cq is a unit of value, such as B. a microfarad, the specified number directly corresponds numerically to the capacitance to be measured.

   If the capacitance Cx to be measured has a very large value and therefore causes a strong discharge current, it can be advantageous to provide the moving coil 10 of the integrating instrument with a shunt during the discharge phase, whereby the sensitivity of the instrument is reduced while the original sensitivity is reduced is restored during the subsequent reversal phase using the capacitor Cq. As FIG. 8 shows, this can be done by using a further relay contact R4, which switches the shunt resistor H in parallel with the integrating instrument 11 during the Cx discharge.

   As mentioned above, the torqueless instrument 11 does not necessarily have a natural zero or reference position. It is therefore advantageous to provide means which allow a zero or reference position to be determined and, if desired, to keep the pointer in alignment with it, without the aid of mechanical detents which would have an unfavorable effect.

   A corresponding arrangement is shown in FIG. 5, in which the pointer arm 12 carries a very small armature 30 made of soft iron at one end, while a small electromagnet 31 a short distance above, below or behind it, in precise alignment with the selected zero position is firmly attached. As soon as the magnet 31 is excited and the pointer arm 12 is in the vicinity of the selected zero position, the armature 30 is attracted and the pointer points exactly to zero. If the magnet 31 is de-energized at the same time as current is supplied to the moving coil 10 in order to deflect it from its basic position, the moving coil can start the deflection precisely at the selected zero position.

   In the capacitance measuring arrangement as described with reference to FIGS. 3 or 8, it is also necessary to determine when the pointer arm 12 reaches the zero position during its return movement so that the series of reverse current surges can be ended. This is done essentially similarly to FIG. 1, in such a way that a mask 13 on the pointer arm 12 passes the light beam between a light source and a light-sensitive element 15, such as, for. B. a phototransistor interrupts.

   FIG. 4 shows a complete sequence of the processes which occur during a charge measurement with the aid of the circuit shown in FIG. 3 or 8 and an integrating instrument shown in FIG.

   At time t0 the transistor T1 is switched on and the transistor T2 switched off, whereby the charging of the capacitor Cx with the unknown capacitance is initiated by supplying suitable potentials to the terminals 1, 1, 2. The magnet 31 above the zero position is excited at this moment and therefore holds the pointer arm 12 in the zero position, and since the light beam between the source 14 and the cell 15 is interrupted, the output reports zero.

   At time tl, which is long enough after time tO to allow the capacitor Cx to fully charge despite possible resistances in the line that can always occur in the charging circuit, the transistor T1 and the magnet 31 are switched off, which the Pointer arm 12 releases. At time t2, which shortly follows time t1, transistor t2 is switched on, which causes capacitor Cx to discharge through instrument 11 and thereby rotate pointer arm 12 in the direction of its maximum deflection position. As soon as the pointer arm 12 moves away from the zero point, the cell 15 gives an output signal which is available for control in order to switch off all other processes when it is interrupted again.

   The transistor T2 is switched off at the time t3, which follows the time t2 long enough to allow the capacitor Cx to discharge; At the same time, the changeover relay is actuated to reverse the position of contacts R1, R2 and R3 (possibly also R4, if present). Thereafter, at the subsequent time t4, the transistor T1 is switched on until the time t5 in order to charge the capacitor Cq via the instrument 11 and thereby drive the pointer arm 12 of the latter one step back towards the zero position. Later, between times t6 and t7, the transistor T2 is switched on and the transistor T1 is switched off in order to discharge the capacitor Cq while the instrument 11 remains unaffected.

   Between the later times t8 and t9, the transistor T1 is switched on again and the transistor T2 is switched off, whereby the capacitor Cq is charged again. The process is then repeated until, at time tn, the output signal of the photocell 15 is interrupted by the arrival of the pointer arm 12 in the zero position. This means the end of the measurement and, if each of the charge or discharge current surges from the capacitor Cq activated a counter, the final reading of this counter shows the charge and therefore the unknown capacitance value of the capacitor Cx.

   The above-mentioned interruption of the output current from the photocell 15 is used to prevent the changing control potentials fed to terminals 1 and 2 and to bring the relay contacts R1, R2, R3 (and R4) into their initial position as shown, whereby the readiness for a new one Measurement is created.

   As an alternative to the electromagnetic zeroing shown in FIG. 5, an electrostatic device according to FIG. 9 can be used. At one end of the pointer arm 12 it has a light electrode 40 which can be moved between two preferably wedge-shaped stationary electrodes 41 which coincide with the selected reference or zero position. The two electrodes 41 are connected in parallel to one another and, by means of the switch described in connection with FIG. 5, can be connected to one terminal of the potential source 42, the opposite terminal of which is connected to the movable electrode 40. The source 42 can be either a DC or AC power source.
